Jaunt to the Owlery

It was a cold, and blustery mid December morning. The Scottish Highlands around the school seemed frozen; blanketed in thick wet snow; crowning trees with a cloak of ice. Em’s breath billowed from his nearly blue lips as he stepped into the morning frost. He smiled, taking in the still grounds through the windows; while minding his steps to not slip on the ice.

Tucked deep into his winter cloak pocket was a letter, wrapped in yellowing parchment and sealed with blue wax. Em’s finger kept tracing the edge of the envelope, a gentle reminder that it was still secure (though his fingertips kept threatening to succumb to the cold). He tied his knitted blue scarf around his neck, breathing hot breaths into the wool to try and warm his shining red nose.

The walk to the Owlery should be easy enough, though Em knew that the stair at the top would likely be slick. His feet crunched with every step, a melody of the early morning. However, it wasn’t far into his journey that he realized that his footsteps weren’t the only ones. Just ahead, he could see a figure.

A girl with dark brown hair was just ahead. Relieved in knowing that should he fall at the top of the stairs, he wouldn’t have to wait long for someone to help him. Em quickened his pace, trying to catch up to the girl ahead.

“Excuse me?” He pronounced into the cold air, hoping to bridge the gap between them. “Sorry, but I was wondering if you’d be interested in walking together? Y’know, just if one of us slips?”

It was freezing. Bella had half a mind to just take the letter to the Owlery tomorrow, but her classmates told her it would only get colder until February. So that was why she grabbed the stack of her letters she is going to send to her parents, her jacket, and headed out, complaining under her breath.

However, when she stepped a foot outside, she gasped in delight. Beautiful, white snow covered the ground, giving everything a frosty yet shiny feel. It never snowed, and at least, not like this, back where she lived.

She smiled at the beauty of the world, and she skipped along the path to the owlery. That was she heard a voice.

“Excuse me?” the voice said “Sorry, but I was wondering if you’d be interested in walking together? You know, just if one of us slips?”

Bella whipped her head back, startled, then relaxed when she saw that it was just a boy about her age, with chestnut colored hair and hazel eyes.

"Oh, hi! That sounds great! Sure, I totally down for that!" Bella exclaimed, happily. It was nice meeting someone who she could walk with, just for the moment.

"Isn't it so beautiful, with the snow and everything? Oh, I forgot to introduce myself! I'm Bella Light, first year Slytherin. What's your name? Wait, where are you going right now? I'm going to the Owlery to send some letters to my parents," Bella continued, slowing her pace to let the boy catch up.

Thankful at the warm welcome, Emmanuel sped up, closing the gap between the students. He pulled his face out of his thick wool scarf, mostly so the Slytherin could see his smile. He took her in, she looked cozy in her jacket, she was carrying a stack of letters, but her eyes are what really caught his attention. He thought, if only for a moment, that the first year was taking in the snowy scene for the first time. A feeling of appreciation filled his chest, thinking back to the first time he made this trek in the cold. Though, that first venture wasn't without its peril, for Em had fallen on the top step at the Owlery, and broke his wrist. It was an injury that was quickly, and easily repaired at the Hospital Wing; but it did leave him with a certain hesitation this time of year.

"Guess we are going to the same place then! Gotta send a letter off for Mum, its almost her birthday." Em smiled brightly, holding out a hand to formally introduce himself. "Im Em, Em Bourne. I saw you get sorted at the start of year! How have you been enjoying Hogwarts?"

His pace kept up with the other student. A feeling of contentedness fell over Em, happy that he didn't have to make the freezing walk alone. The corridor was keeping them safe from the worst of the frost; but his thick cloud breaths suggested that a warm mug of cocoa would be more than welcome, once the errand was accomplished.

The boy, who introduced himself as Em Bourne, explained that he was going to go to the owlery too, which she was delighted to hear.

"Oh, tell your mum happy birthday for me!"
Bella shook his hand firmly before continuing. "Hogwarts is amazing. It's so BIG and so BEAUTIFUL! I couldn't believe it when I saw Hogwarts for the first time. It was a literal castle! I didn't know what I expected, but it wasn't that!"

Chatting with her new friend and acquaintance made time fly, and they reached the tower of the Owlery in nearly no time.

"Hey, if either of us slips because its ridiculously wet, the other should try to catch them or like stop their fall midway?" Bella asked, tilting her head. "I don't want a repeat of Jessie tumbling down the stairs again. Oh, wait, I didn't tell you yet!"

Bella explained that she was half-blood, and her childhood friend Jessie was at her house one day when she slipped and fell down the stairs, breaking her leg.

"I guess here the nurse could patch you up in no time, but it took such a long time until Jessie was healed completely. The difference between having magic," Bella sighed, then perked up again. "How about you? How are you liking Hogwarts? You aren't a first-year, are you? I don't remember hearing your name, though I might have forgotten. There were just too many people, I'm sorry!"

As the two made their way toward the Owlery, Em smiled warmly as the first year described her experience at Hogwarts so far. It felt to Em that even though he's ny been attending Hogwarts for one year more than Bella; he stopped seeing some of the new found wonder that comes with being a first year. He was happy to feel the flame reignite at the girl's words; taking in the scene of their walk with a little more mindfulness.

As they crested their way toward the Owlery proper, Em let out a laugh at her story of her Muggle friend Jessie. "Certainly more simple injuries are a bit easier for us magical-folk to remedy! Just last year I took a fall at the top of these stairs, and snapped my wrist in two. The Hogwarts matron put me right in a moment, and gave me a Pepper Up potion to boot!"

They made their way to the top of the stairs, which were a bit more wet than icy; which was a relief to Em. "I'll be sure to add in my letter that my new friend wishes her well," Em remarked, dawning back to Bella's earlier well-wishes toward his Mother. Em took out his letter, and quickly added a PS to the bottom of his note, before re-sealing it. Em looked up into the tower, and called for his owl, Ewin. Em took out an owl treat, and kept it in his closed hand until his bird flew down; but he also handed Bella one to give to her owl.

"Yeah, I'm a second year now. Honestly, we probably wouldn't have met properly without this jaunt!" He shrugged, though he was thankful to have met her. "Hogwarts is fantastic. It can be hard to go home for the summer, honestly. Especially when you have to go somewhere like my Grandfather's," Em looked a bit coldly up into the tower, still waiting for his owl.

"I grew up around wizards, but some of them aren't very open to interacting with Muggles, or even muggle-borns. My Grandfather is like that. My dad hates it, and so do I. I think Muggles and Wizards could learn to live together, but I guess I don't really know how.". His owl finally swooped down, and perched near his closed fist with a treat. Em gave the bird a quick scratch on it's head, earning himself a loving nip on his finger, and gave the treat over. He began tying his letter to the leg of the owl.

"Who you sending all those letters and stuff to?" He asked curiously, watching Bella in the tower. "Can't imagine your Muggle friend would react well to having an owl show up at her window?" He tilted his head in curiosity.

As Bella listened to Em's example of falling down the stairs, Bella winced.

"Oof, that must have hurt, even with the magical potion. Well, that makes me happy that we are walking there together, as we really really don't want a repeat of that!" Bella chuckled.

Bella smiled that Em called her his friend and looked curiously as Em gave his owl a treat before sending the owl away. He handed her a treat as well.

"Oh, I don't have a personal owl, though my parents were thinking of buying and giving me one. I just use the school owls for now," Bella told her new friend as she set her owl off too.

"And I totally agree! We are in different years, different houses, so we may never have really talked if I haven't met you today. But now that we have, we can say hello to each other in the hallways and all!" Bella exclaimed as she turned to face Em. "Hogwarts is amazing. And... I'm happy that you think Muggles and Wizards can learn to live together. I hope so, too. I feel like the traditional blood-separation isn't really rational or right, you know? I mean, I know that I'm a Slytherin, and people have biases that Slytherins are 'pure' and all that, but personally, I just feel like it just isn't logical at all. But I'm sorry for spilling that all on you!"

"I'm sending the letters to my parents, who promised that they will give the letters to Jessie and my other friend, Liam. There's no way they would be happy to find an owl at the windows, especially since they have no clue, I am a wizard with powers and stuff," Bella laughed as she looked out the window. "Do you have any friends you miss from before Hogwarts?"
