It had been two years since Dylan had first bumped into Summer. Two years since he had made the best decision of his life to choose her friendship. Being her best friend meant the world to him. Her cared for her deeply. More than a friend at this point, but he was too scared to admit it out loud. What if he lost her? He had already lost his grandfather. He could not lose Summer.

That was why Dylan had sent the note to her. It would be a gift after two years of friendship and a way he could finally tell her what was going on with him. Why he was far from his usual self. He would finally tell her about his grandfather. It would break him to say it, but she deserved to know. He was her best friend. He could not hide things from her.

Even the bright blue sky was darker than normal. The fluffy white clouds staring down menacingly at him. Threatening rain that would ruin the surprise. That would honestly be his luck. He had never really been that lucky when it came to life. That was why he treasured Summer so much. She was one of the only good things that had happened in his time on earth.

Now all he had left to do was wait. Wait for the girl of his dreams to come walking across the grounds. Though he would never tell her that aloud. Those thoughts were going to stay in his head for eternity. She did not deserve him. She deserved so much more than a moody and broken boy that could barely handle himself. Why would she want him as more than a close friend? The truth was, she probably did not care for him that way. That meant he would just continue caring for her deeply in the dark.

Summer had to admit, her heart skipped a beat when she saw Dylan's letter to meet. She had learned a lot this summer. One of those things being why she felt this way around Dylan. Her mom said it was puberty, she was growing up and of course she would have different thoughts about boys, like love. Her mom said it was a phase and things would go back to the way things were before. But Summer knew this was wrong. This was... how would you put this? Not a phase. She had... fallen for her best and one of her only friends. Something felt wrong with this but there was nothing she could do.

What was she to do? There was no way he felt the same way and also no way she would tell him. She didn't want him to think there was something different between them. How she longed for their original relationship, meeting with her crashing into him while hurrying to class, those picnics and their shared love of marshmallows. She smiled at those memories, how free and young they had been. Of course it was only two years ago, but it seemed as if so much time has past. She couldn't believe they were thirteen, Dylan, almost fourteen. Seasons change, years go by and classes get harder but Dylan had been with her the whole time. Not that her life was very hard, she was very lucky but still...

Summer walked to meet Dylan around the place of their first picnic. Of course the weather was very different. No longer was it nice and sunny out, but instead there was cold, gray clouds in the sky above. Not the best day, but still when she was with him the world seemed to light up. Summer spotted him across the field and tried to control her face and body, giving him a small smile and walking, instead of running the rest of the distance. I wonder what he wants to tell me... She wondered.

She came. She actually chose to come. Dylan could hardly believe it. Then again, Summer was his best friend. Why wouldn’t she show up? That was what best friends did for each other. Though something deep down within Dylan said she didn’t care enough and was just his friend because she pitied him. No. That couldn’t be the case. He had cared for her too deeply lately. Maybe it was the fear of rejection trying to strangle him slowly, or maybe it was the darkness that was creeping within him? Either way, he had to push it down. Summer was more important.

“Summer. Hey. I’m glad you came. I have something to tell you.”

He swallowed. No. This was not about to be a confession of his feelings for her. He couldn’t handle the rejection right now if she didn’t feel the same way. It would destroy him. And he was already broken enough.

“My grandfather is dead.” He spoke abruptly, but the words cut through him like a knife.

“Honestly I don’t know what to feel. He’s gone and it feels like a piece of me died along with him. I’ve barely been able to keep my head above water.”

He smiled weakly. This was probably not what she had expected for their first encounter back together after a long summer apart.

“Sorry to push the bad news on you. Happy two year friendship anniversary or whatever we can call it.” He laughed lightly as a lock of inky black curls fell across his face and into his eyes. The laugh was probably his most genuine reaction of happiness since his grandfather died. Summer just brought the good out of him. Though there was no way she cared about him more than just a friend. She was too good for him. She deserved someone who would adore her and not hold her back.

"Of course I would come!" Summer said, smiling at Dylan, "What's up?"

Summer waited for him to talk. It must be hard news, why would he be hesitant with her? Unless... No, he didn't feel the same way as her, it was impossible. But the news he delivered, Summer never expected. He had mentioned that his grandfather was sick, but... still. The smile of seeing Dylan that was on her face fell.

Summer scooted closer to him, feeling it was appropriate in this case, she put her arm around him, giving Dylan a small hug. Hopefully he understood she would be there for him.

"Happy anniversary to you too, sorry for crashing into you that day." He laugh felt nice, at least he was trying to stay happy... it seemed at least to Summer. "I'm so sorry Dylan. You don't have to pretend to be happy right now. It's okay." Summer told him. She wanted to say she understood what he was going through, but the truth was, she didn't. She hadn't lost a family member and didn't even have one sick. Still though, her heart hurt because of what he had said and she wanted to do something. The most she could do now though, was be there for Dylan.

There he was doing it all over again. Dylan kicked himself internally. Wow. He was great at destroying a vibe. This was supposed to be a good day. Not one that was full of messed up confessions and struggling to hold emotions down. He had to get his act together. If not for himself, then for Summer. She deserved that and so much more. She was far too good for him. She would never care for him in the way he cared for her.

"I care about you as more than a friend." Dylan blurt out. Horror flashed across his face. Had he really just spoken that out loud to Summer? No. No. No. No. This was bad. Very bad. What had he done? He just committed the worst crime he could have ever done. He had ruined everything. Now nothing would be the same between Summer and himself. A rift would drive between them and he would lose her. He would not survive losing her. It would destroy him.

"I'm so sorry. Did I really just say that out loud?" Dylan tensed. Her arm was still wrapped around him, but he knew it would soon disappear. He memorized the warmth of her touch and how it felt to have her arm draped across his shoulders.

Summer couldn't believe what she was hearing. Had she even heard him right? He must not be thinking straight, with everything going on, after all something big had just happened in his life. He might be... confused? That didn't sound like Dylan though. Summer just couldn't believe that he... he liked her? Well she knew that, but as more than a friend. As bad as she felt, she looked at him in shock, her arm moving from where it was wrapped around him, as much as she wanted to keep it there. She probably looked like she thought he was insane and she didn't feel the same way, but she did, she just couldn't believe he felt the same.

"You.. do? Like as a... crush?" Summer asked although she knew the answer. Still though, this was all new to her. She had never in her life had a crush. She had never been in love. What was this? "I... I feel the same way. I thought you didn't though, and we where such good friends I didn't want to rock the boat or whatever muggles say."

Why was she still talking? Is this how it would be around them now that she knew they felt the same? Her talking, rambling, something she hadn't done in awhile. But hopefully this would cheer Dylan up. There was always good in bad, that was what Summer's mom had said.

Summer didn't know what to call him though and she wanted to know. Were they still... friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, or something else entirely? She didn't want to ask, that seemed immature, but at the same time she did. Is it wrong that she wanted to call him her boyfriend? Summer could tell that other girls liked him. But then, was she going to fast? Did he want to call her that? Why was she thinking about this?He had just told her he liked her and here she was, jumping to conclusions. Typical behavior for Summer though.
