Lucy stepped onto the train and had some help from the train attendant with her trunk across the gap between the platform and the train. Once in, she immediately had to stop herself from turning back. Not because she wanted to leave. Nor because she was nervous of all the change in a short period of time. Definitely not. There was simply so much to see. To look at. The Hogwarts Express was enormous up close. The scarlet paint was so bright that it almost looked strange against the different shades of grey that was the platform, and the brass fittings caught the station's lights whenever Lucy moved her head. Everything seemed polished. Properly so, too. Not the kind of clean that Mum managed at home, but the kind that made Lucy wonder how often somebody had to polish all of it for it to stay so. Shiny.

Lucy reached one hand out and lightly touched the brass beside the doorway. Cold. Her eyes narrowed with interest. Then the train gave a little hiss, and Lucy quickly stepped further inside. Away from the doorway.

The corridor was much more narrow than she had expected. Lanterns on the walls were emitting soft and warm yellow light over the wooden doors. Behind some of them came voices, laughter, and a few thumps here and there whenever something moved around. Suitcases were being stored on overhead racks and doors were opened and closed. Somewhere further away she already heard someone laugh so loud that it was probably heard in the whole train.

Lucy checked the straps on her trunk and made sure everything was still with her. Then she looked around. So many compartments. She walked a little farther, peering through the glass in the doors she passed. Some were already crowded with students, others had only one or two people inside. A cage made her stop for a second. And owl. She stared at it. Then she continued. A couple steps later, she stopped again. Another owl. Her eyebrows lifted. Were there going to be owls everywhere? She looked down at her things, then at the owl, briefly thinking if she was supposed to bring one with her. No. Probably not. She can’t remember anything about it in the instructions.

Finally. Lucy found an empty compartment and pulled the door open. She climbed onto one of the seats, then immediately got up and leaned out into the corridor to give it one more look around. The train hummed beneath her feet. So strange. She could feel it before it had even properly started moving. A little vibration running through the floor and up her boots. She grinned. Awesome. She had absolutely no idea what the next seven years were going to be like. But this seemed like a good start.

1st September 2026, The Ride to Hogwarts Open
Zara Blackwood had been trying very hard not to look like she was about to explode with excitement. It wasn't working. She stood on the platform with one hand wrapped around the handle of her trunk, staring up at the Hogwarts Express with wide eyes. She'd seen pictures of it before, of course. She'd heard stories from her siblings but none of that quite prepared her for actually standing beside it. The scarlet train looked almost impossibly bright against the grey platform, steam curling around its wheels and drifting lazily across the ground. Zara's eyes moved over the carriages, taking in every little detail she could find.

So that's it

Her smile widened.

That's actually it

She finally pulled her trunk forward, carefully making her way toward the train. There were already students climbing aboard, some looking just as excited as she felt and others seeming considerably more comfortable with the whole thing. Zara paused near the entrance, glancing back toward the platform. For a brief moment, she wondered if she should feel nervous. She climbed aboard, dragging her trunk behind her before stopping in the corridor.

The train was even more impressive from the inside. Zara looked down one direction of the corridor, then the other. Compartments lined both sides, some already occupied by groups of students talking amongst themselves. None of the faces were familiar enough for her to confidently approach. Not yet, anyway.

She adjusted the strap of her bag over her shoulder and started walking. Her first thought was to find an empty compartment. Her second thought was that an empty compartment seemed rather boring. Zara slowed as she passed one compartment after another, peering through the glass doors. She saw a girl alone in the compartment, she popped her head in,"Hi! Are these seats taken?"

While still peering around the corridor with her hands on the frame of the door and her body leaning outside the compartment, Lucy realises that from now on going forward every single person she meets is a stranger to her. She finds the thought, not only a little scary, but also exciting and annoying at the same time. Communication with new people is always such a hassle. Some absolutely lack the patience to even realise that she is working on it. Some think she can't hear and that is why she writes. And some, although rare, are so nicely patient, but then treat her like she couldn't handle basic everyday things.

Lucy retreats into her compartment. Her own little hideout for the trip. Or so there is hoping. She then tries to shove her trunk into the luggage rack above the seats but finds it a bit difficult. The rack being so high up and the trunk not being the lightest weight either. After a while of struggling with it she finally managed to boost her trunk on the rack by pushing it with her head and shoulder while climbing onto the seats to gain the extra reach she needed. She jumps down and quickly checks around to make sure no one saw her little performance. Then quickly brushes away any evidence of her climbing on the seats with her boots on. After this, she admires her accomplishment for a second before she's interrupted.

A sudden -CLACK- the brass latch on the door turning, followed by -WHOOSH- the heavy wooden door sliding open on its tracks.
"Hi! Are these seats taken?" Asks a blue eyed girl with dark hair from the doorway.

Lucy turns toward the door and freezes for a moment. There is a girl there. She stares at the girl. She stares for a second longer, and then she blinks. She flinches slightly as she realises she was asked a question. She looks at the empty seats and then at her own things on her claimed spot. Then at the girl again and shakes her head. She smiles and gestures for her to get in. Lucy spots the girl’s trunk. Points at it, and then at the rack above the seats. She makes a little lifting motion with her hands, then points at herself and raises her eyebrows while staring at the girl in inquiry.

Zara smiles brightly as she was told to come into the compartment. She did just that and dragged her trunk along too. She watched as the girl motioned for her to put her trunk on the top rails. Zara's eyes looked up at the rack. You could see the cogs in her brain turning wildly as she was figuring out how exactly to get her trunk up there.

Zara shook her head,"I got it! Thank you though!" With all her might Zara lifted the trunk over her head and placed it on the rack above her seat. Zara climbed onto the seat and pushed the trunk back to make sure that is was secure. She hopped down and sat across from the blond girl.

"I'm Zara by the way!" Zara told her, her black hair falling in front of her face. She pushed it out of her face rather dramatically,"And you are?"

While asking her question, Zara looked out the window of the train, excitedly waiting for it to start moving. She kept her face turned away, not quite realizing that the girl in front of her does not speak. Zara turned back around after a few moments and looks confused,"Did you say something?"

Lucy nodded with a smile at the refusal. It wasn't exactly easy anyway, so she wouldn't have demanded to do it again. She looks at Zara's performance as they lift their trunk above their head by themselves and manage to place the trunk up there successfully without much struggle. Lucy grinned. For whatever reason she was proud of a stranger.

Lucy went and sat on her seat by the window, facing forward and was about to grab her notebook from her things when Zara introduced themselves to her. She smiled. Such a pretty name. She had heard of the name but doesn't know anyone with it. Short and easy to remember. Like hers.

Lucy finally grabs her notebook as she hears Zara ask, "And you are?" while they look out the window, completely oblivious to her not speaking. She hadn't made a sound even. Not to mention all that gesturing before. Well, this would not be the first, nor the last time this happens. She knows this well.

Just as Zara turns back at her asking if she had said something, Lucy sprang up from her seat with her notebook firmly in her hands. She doesn't answer the question directly but she would hold up her notebook's cover for Zara to see.

The book would be quite worn and a dark shade of pink. Its cover is full of sketches. Sketches of different flowers and a raven, with a dried lily of the valley taped on it. Next to the lily there is a blank sticker with a name Lucy written on it in simple, yet pretty handwriting. Lucy smiles while showing it to Zara.

"Lucy? That's your name?" Zara was sprung back as the notebook was in her face. Zara smiled softly,"That's a very nice name!"

Zara cocked her head to the side,"You don't talk much do you?" Zara didn't wait for an answer. She realized how silly it was to ask someone this type of question when they had shown lots of signs of that,"That's okay Lucy! I'll talk enough for the both of us!"

Zara reached into the pocket of her pants and pulled out a warn picture of her family. There was an older man with chocolate brown hair and sky blue eyes that matched Zara's. He also had small square glasses on the tip of his nose. The older woman in the photo looked exactly like Zara, just way older and with Amber brown eyes. There were two others in the photo. Both older than Zara by a few years. A boy about 16, whose hair was shaggy and just as jet black as Zara's, his eyes hazel. The girl about 14 had ash brown hair and sky blue eyes with freckles adoring her face.

"These are my parents," She pointed at the older two in the photo,"They met at Hogwarts! This is my brother Leo, he's in his 6th year and is a Slytherin. My sister Esme is in her 4th year, shes a Ravenclaw! Do you have any siblings?" Zara pointed everyone out in the picture. She looked up at Lucy with wide eyes, awaiting the answer.

"Lucy? That's your name?" Zara asks while Lucy held the book a bit too close for comfort.
Lucy nodded with a smile.
Zara continued with, "That's a very nice name!"
Lucy continued to smile.
Then quickly after: "You don't talk much do you?"
Lucy shook her head with the biggest smile. She liked my name, Lucy thought to herself.

While Zara was showing her their family, Lucy thought how cool that was to have a picture of everyone. Everyone in the same picture, more importantly. She didn't have a picture like that, she thought. Then Zara asked if she had any siblings. Lucy just shook her head instinctively. Then she realised she might have something else to show instead. She lifted her index finger as if to gesture Uno Momento.

Lucy got on the seat right beside Zara and began to scroll through her book. She had her tongue peeking out of her mouth as she focused to find the right opening. Then suddenly she stopped and stared at an opening for a moment herself. The opening had multiple seemingly unrelated little sketches. It had reindeer, snow piles, snowmen, many children and a couple of taller people that could be assumed to be adults. All but one of the people were more so just silhouettes than fleshed out. The smallest of the children had a braid while the others did not have distinct hairstyles. Lucy smiled when she looked at the opening, then she continued to scroll through the pages until she stopped again.

This opening had one page reserved for a portrait and the second page had multiple little sketches of things like some weird little figurines or statues, swords, shields, armour, guns, and more seemingly old things. The portrait had a man with glasses and tidy short hair and he was dressed with a vest and tie. The colours were just different shades of grey and black and as light as the paper went. The drawing otherwise was relatively good. Lucy reached over and pointed at the older man in Zara's picture, then at her drawing, and then herself. She waited for a bit before she turned a page again.

This opening had a similar layout. One page had a portrait of a woman with her hair about shoulder length and loose. Dressed in a summer dress. The page next to it had small sketches of things like a microscope, bugs, leaves, and more nature related things. These drawings all were quite well detailed, especially one spider that seemed to have gotten some extra attention and space on the page. Lucy then pointed at the older woman in Zara's picture, then at the portrait, and then herself, while smiling proudly.

Zara followed along, in awe of communicating without words. That was an insanity to her. A good one nonetheless but insanity in her mind. She had always been told people would hear her before they saw her, she wondered how people noticed Lucy.

She watched the flipping through the pages of the sketch book, a small comment slipped out no matter how hard it was for her to keep quite,"You're a really good artist". It was quiet and small but she couldn't help it. She looked at the picture of the man then her father, then followed again for her mother.

"You drew your parents? That's your mother and father? That's very good!!" Zara's excitement came through tenfold,"You don't have any siblings though? That must be boring?! I absolutely love my brother! Not my sister right now, she told me that the sorting hat wasn't going to sort me and he would send me home!" Zara complained with a smile upon her face. As much as she talked bad about her sister, deep down she did love her.

"Where are you from Lucy? London?" She asked and turned more toward her,"I'm from Birmingham. That's in London!" Her mind went back to the snow drawings she caught a glance of,"OH! Are you from somewhere very cold? Like Antarctica?"

Lucy nodded at the question about whether she drew her parents. Then shook her head at the mention of siblings. Boring? She wasn’t quite sure about that. She had plenty of things to do by herself. She just shrugged.

The next question made Lucy pause, though. London? She blinked. She quickly shook her head and turned to a clean new page. She flipped one page back. There was still space there. Random scribbles, broken sentences, and small out of context drawings covered the opening in different angles. This very opening seemed as if it was possessed but was quite normal for Lucy. In the empty space she wrote.

Inari, Finland → Inverness, Scotland

She held it up for Zara to read. Then she heard Antarctica. Lucy stared at Zara. Her eyebrows rose slowly. She turned her book around and started flipping the pages backwards again. All the way to the snow, reindeer, and children. She pointed at the snow first, then the reindeer, then the small figure with a braid, and finally at herself. She looked back at Zara, shook her head very firmly and pointed at the page again. As if the reindeer should have been sufficient enough explanation. Then she flipped back to the possessed opening and pointed at the word Finland she had just written.

Then Lucy turned the book back at her and scribbled something quickly underneath.

Birmingham isn't in London

And she would turn it around and hold up for Zara to read again.

Zara watched her write where she was from, then point at the reindeer and herself then finally 'Birmingham isn't in London'. Zara giggled slightly. Even though the reindeer drawing still slightly confused her, she had a feeling this was going to happen.

"Yes, I know! I was using it as an Umbrella term as my dad calls it. Lots of people say they are from London when they aren't really because most other people only know where London is! We hear it all the time in my families bookshop! We ask customers where they are from and EVERYONE just says London!" Zara explained. Her face lighting up when she got to talk about the bookstore, she loved the bookstore! That is truly her home, even though her real house sat just above it.

"Finland is cool, then you moved to Scotland?" She asked, confirming for herself. Zara couldn't help but to think how fun it would be to move. She's lived in the same house with the same bookstore under her for all 11 years of her life. Zara's favorite thing about meeting new people was learning about them and their lives, was picturing if it was her life!
