Sorting Ceremony 2026-2027

September 1.

Joanne looked all around her, genuinely amazed. Her mother hadn’t done the Great Hall justice in her stories, it was so vast and magical, with its floating candles and enchanted night sky. Some of the other children were already chatting, and Joanne sincerely wondered if she’d be able to make friends here… It had already been hard enough to make friends at her Muggle school… but she took a deep breath; after all, she had seven years ahead of her.

Upon arriving at the Great Hall, a strange-looking woman was standing at the front, reading name after name. Joanne tried to catch most of them, watching nervously as her classmates stepped forward, being sorted into different houses… She thought, without a doubt, that she would be in the same house as her mother. Slytherin seemed to have… good students; so far she’d seen a few, fewer than in the other houses, but she liked it, even though she couldn’t be 100% sure.

It was indeed about 11 minutes later that they called her name, her name ringing out loud and clear.

“Thornton, Joanne,” she heard, and Joanne exhaled one last time, walking to the front and sitting down, somewhat nervous; her feet wiggled, and then she startled a little when she heard a whisper in her head.

“Hmm, interesting… you have a quick mind; that head of yours never stops thinking, does it?” said the hat. Joanne looked up and just let out an “Uh?” before falling silent.
"That's right. Hmm, where should I place you? You certainly have spirit, a quick mind, but creative hands, and that stubbornness of yours... You'd fit in very well in Slytherin... but I'll place you in... RAVENCLAW!” he shouted at last. Joanne was a little taken aback; she heard the applause and quickly looked away. The headmaster gestured toward her table, and Joanne finally went down, walking over to the enormous table adorned with silver and blue. She sighed with relief then, she had a house… For a moment, she’d feared she might end up without a house because the Sorting Hat wouldn’t find anything good in her, but she did have one, and that put her at ease. It wasn’t Slytherin, but… looking at her classmates, she knew she’d be just fine here.

Kai followed the first years into the Great Hall, and her first instinct was to try to look for her friends. Even with the help of the warm light of the candles, she caught no sight of them.
Just then, she heard a familiar voice call from behind her.

"Kai!”

A brown-haired girl waved at her from behind. "Excuse me— sorry!" she muttered, pushing through the crowd.

"There you are! I didn't see you on the train, not even at the lake. Where's Oren?"

"I couldn't find you anywhere either! About Ori, he was here somewhere… I lost sight of him.”

The giant doors shut behind them with a loud slam once all the students were in the hall.

The headmaster began his speech, welcomed everybody, and explained the houses, and halfway through the Sorting Hat's song, Rose asked, "What house do you think you'll get sorted into?"

"I really don't know," Kai replied. "What about you?"

"I'm going to try to convince the Hat to put me in Slytherin. My mom is going to be really upset if I don't make it there."

"We can do that? Well, why does she want you to be a Slytherin specifically? I’m sure you’ll do great in any house."

“I can’t be the ‘odd one out ', everyone in my family was one.”

Rosalina’s name was suddenly announced, Kai wished her good luck before she went to the hat.

Kai watched as Rosalina sat down on the stool. The Hat took a few seconds before announcing, "HUFFLEPUFF!"
The hall erupted with applause, especially from the Hufflepuff table, as she stood up to join the Badgers. Rose didn't exactly look happy, but she didn't look upset either.

I guess the 'convincing the hat' plan didn't work out well… Rose’s words made Kai wonder if her own parents would be upset if she didn’t make it to Gryffindor or Ravenclaw.

As the list of names went on and on, and one of the houses cheered every time a student was sorted, Kai distracted herself with her surroundings, noticing the enchanted ceiling for the first time. Hundreds of candles floated right below it. The hall's walls were decorated with the colours of every house: Red and Gold, Blue and Bronze, Yellow and Black, and Green and Silver. The Great Hall was as beautiful as Dad had described it. She was still thinking about Rose’s sorting, taking a few glances at the Hufflepuff table.

A loud, "Hepner, Kai!" startled her.

Kai suddenly felt her heartbeat race. She walked towards the stool, gathering up her courage before sitting down.

She heard a soft "Hmm" in her head, was that the hat?

How do you do that?

Ah, curiosity, a deep desire to learn. Runs in the family, does it?

Uhh.. You could say that.

I see an analytical mind as well. You possess an openness to new ideas and also an empathy for the feelings of others.

I do?

But there is mischief in you too, and a habit of speaking before you think… No matter! I know exactly where you belong.

Fair point— But shouldn’t you—

"RAVENCLAW!”

The hall erupted in cheers once again, Kai looked down at her robes and saw they were lined with a deep shade of blue.

That felt fast… Kai thought as she walked towards the Ravenclaw table. But she felt happy to be a Ravenclaw, and she was going to owl her dad about it as she’d promised to.

I slowly walked into Hogwarts Castle with the other first year students. I looked around in amazement as we walked through the huge stone halls. There were movng paintings on the walls, tall windows, and glowing torches along the corridors.

Everything looked so magical and I could not believe that I was finally inside Hogwarts.

Soon we reached the doors of the Great Hall. My heart started beating faster as I looked at the large doors in front of us.

When the doors were opened I stepped inside with the crowd.

The Great Hall was even more beautiful than I had imagined. Hundreds of candles floated in the air and the ceiling looked like the night sky. Four long tables were filled with students wearing different house colours.

At the front of the hall stood Headmaster Solomon Lear. I looked towards him for a moment before turning my atention to the Sorting Hat.

The first year students stood in a line as names were called one by one.

I waited nervousl holding my hands together. I wonder which house I would be placed in but I did not really mind which one, all the houses were special.

Then I heard my name.

"Penelope Kneen."

I took a deep breath and walked towards the stool. I sat dow and the Sorting Hat was placed on my head.

I waited quietly.

Then I heard the Hat say out loud

"Hufflepuff!"

I smiled with relief and quickly stood up.

The Hufflepuff table cheered loudly. I walked towards them feeling nervous but happy.

As I sat with my new housemates and looked around the Great Hall once more, now i watched the other first yaers being sorted.

I was finally at Hogwarts and I am a Hufflepuff.

─────Lucian sighed in relief as he made his way to the Great Hall with other first years who were there to be sorted into houses. This house was going to be Lucian's home away from home. Lucian walked into the Great Hall with big eyes as he took in the sight in front of him and was mesmerized by the ceiling. Candles were floating in it. Magic surprised Lucian a lot. He was turning around and looking at the whole area. He was excited to be here. He wondered what house he would be sorted in. Seeing how students were being called and had a hat put on their head that did the sorting for them.

Lucian was busy taking in the surroundings and not realizing that he was being called. "Wright, Lucian." A voice called out. Lucian snapped out of his trance and walked to the stool and sat down on it. Soon the hat was placed on his head by the faculty who was responsible for sorting. A voice shook Lucian as the Sorting Hat started to speak. "Hmm... I see shyness but also boldness. Maybe Hufflepuff. No better be GRYFFINDOR." The hat shouted at the end startling the boy who almost fell down from the stool. He was sorted into Gryffindor and he made his way off the sorting area and towards the Gryffindor table.

Silas Vance

✧ ────────────────────────── ✧

Silas Vance walks through a bit sheepishly with the other students. Everything here is incredibly strange to him and it shows on his face and his wondering eyes. Frustration hits him as the group walks faster and faster as he still have not quite figured out what is going on. When the sorting ceremony begins he is a bit taken aback by the sorting hat speaking but after seeing the mixture of expressions on his soon to be classmates faces, he decides to simply not question it.

Eventually his name is called, he shuffles forward and flinches slightly as the sorting hat is placed onto him.

Sorting hat: “Ah”

Sorting hat: “You measure how deep water is before taking a step in don’t you? Cautious it seems.”

*Silas rubs his hands a bit uncomfortably at the thought of being read*

Silas: “No I suppose I would not”

Sorting hat: “There is a sharp quiet mind here, I see you enjoy the pursuit of knowledge maybe Ravenclaw then. You would do well in such a house. ”

Silas: “If they appreciate quiet ambition I suppose that is fine”

Sorting hat: “Ambition you say?”

Sorting hat: “I see it now, quiet. Ambitious. Cunning to a fault. I have made my decision….”

"SLYTHERIN!"

*As the hat is raised from his head there is a quiet sigh of relief as he gets up and steps aside, the thought of being in front of everyone for a moment longer stresses him. As he stands besides his fellow Slytherin he can’t help but smile*

Sorting Ceremony 2026-2027
Ji-won’s banner
September 1st, 2026 | Great Hall
It’s cold and he got splashed with lake water from the boat ride due to some other first years getting overzealous with their excitement. Let it be clear that Ji-won’s first introduction to Hogwarts wasn’t pleasant and he doesn’t see the appeal of the experience so far. He doesn’t, however, understand why his siblings rave about the castle’s exterior, it’s a castle, a literal castle.

He couldn’t help but gape in true childish fashion when he noticed to castle, while it didn’t make him forget his wet state, it did cause his irritation to decrease substantially. He took a moment to notice the ghosts floating through the wall opposite of him before the first year crowd started to walk into the now open door.

One look at Ae-ri made him smile, she was looking at everything with bemused eyes, whispering under her breath in Korean so faintly that he couldn’t understand what she was saying. He was broken out of his concentration due to a teacher bringing out a dingy and somewhat patchy hat, the appearance of it was both surprising and unsurprising. Unsurprising because Chae-mi had already told him that a hat sorted them into their houses but due to how unkept the hat looks. They put that on our heads? He ran his hand through his dark locks, trying not to dwell on how, for lack of better word, disgusting it looks.

Soon, it was time for the actual sorting to start. He heard many last names, some strange and some, similar to his, that suggest family backgrounds from South Korea or somewhere else in Asia. His musings were interrupted by his name being called for his sorting.

In all eleven years of his living, this is the most nervous he's ever felt, his palms are clammy and he can feel his heart beating. He doesn't like it. When he made it to the stool, he sat in it and grimaced when he felt the hat be lowered to his hair. The hat, thankfully, didn't seem to be able to hear his disgusted thoughts, or just didn't care, instead focusing on sorting him.

"I sense a large amount of ambition and cleverness. You'd do well in the house of snakes." Hearing that didn't have any particular effect on Ji-won, he didn't have any particular bias or prejudice toward the house. "But I sense wisdom and creativity befitting the another house. You're very unpredictable and vain, some might even call you shallow, though you don't share that sentiment...I see. Better be, Ravenclaw!" Ji-won felt delighted. Yes, all of the houses has their charms but Ravenclaw had called to his curiosity more than once. He was more than happy to have the hat taken off of his head and swiftly walk to the applauding table of blue.

When he'd sat down in an open spot, his sister was already sitting down with the hat on her head, she sat there for a short while until the hat finally sorted her into Hufflepuff. She didn't look very happy about it, her face twisted into a pout until she seen him clapping for her and smiling reassuringly. That put a bit of pep in her step as she walked to the clapping older years and fellow first years. When she sat down, Ji-won turned his gaze to the Slytherin table where his older siblings were already looking in his direction, not at all disappointed. It was different for Chae-mi, who was glaring at nothing in particular until she realized he was looking at her and gave him a reassuring smile that looked more like she was bearing her teeth, due to her furrowed brows.

Ji-won, content in how he was sorted, looked away and decided to watch the rest of the sorting while trying to get the imaginary germs from the hat out of his hair, drawing a few amused and confused stares.

'Ravenclaw!', the Sorting Hat bellowed over Lucas' wooly head.

From the short descriptions in that epic song, it was exactly what he had expected. He lift up the chair, placing the leathery garnment on top of it, and sprinted towards the table under the blue and bronze flags billowing over the enchanted ceiling. His robes offered no friction to the wood bench as he hastily sat with the momentum, making him bump a little too hard on the student sorted into Ravenclaw immediately before, @Jiwon Kim.

'Oof, my bad' Lucas exclaimed, raising the palm of his left hand in a pacifying gesture. The other first year seemed distracted with someone at the Slytherin table and gave his new housemate a brief annoyed scowl following the thud, before turning his eyes towards the original source of their gaze.

Lucas treated himself with a steaming piece of pumpkin pie, almost burying his face on the plate to steer off the attention from the earlier faux pas. As he watched the food in front of them magically replenishing itself, the boy couldn't help but remember a few excerpts from the book bought at Flourish and Blotts, Magical Theory, which he had already started reading, beaten by curiosity. His thoughts started to race: just what kind of logic was behind that ominous force that seemed to power every fiber of this new world, and on which Wizards seemed so dependent?

When Lily first entered the Great Hall, she was amazed! She had heard stories about Hogwarts before, but she never realised Hogwarts was this great. Together with all the other first years, she walked to the back of the Great Hall. It felt like an eternity. The door closed behind them, and for the first time since this journey, Lily was nervous.
Once they reached the other side of the hall, she saw a few people sitting in the back, which she could only assume to be the teachers. The headmaster stepped forward and introduced himself. Then suddenly, the hat he was holding started talking. Lily had not seen anything like that before, a sentient hat?
The headmaster grabbed a list and started calling out names. One by one, students stood next to the headmaster, and the hat would be put on top of the student. It would decide what house they would be in, sometimes taking very long and sometimes calling it out within a few seconds.
Lily was scared. She had always assumed she would be in Slytherin. Her whole family was in Slytherin, and her mother had told her so. But what if she wasn't? What would happen then?
Before she could finish her thoughts, her name was called. She slowly walked toward the Sorting Hat, thoughts racing through her head. When the hat was placed on top of her head, it was silent for a few seconds. But after a few seconds, without saying anything else, the Sorting Hat shouted, 'SLYTHERIN!'. Lily was relieved and quickly walked to the Slytherin dining table.
