Charms Reaction 1:1 Open

The purpose of this thread is to provide a place where students can react in character to their lessons. Anyone who has a reason to be in Charms 1:1, the First Year first lesson Sept 2026, is welcome to join the thread. You may post here either with a single solo post or invite interaction. Today was Alfie's first class as a Hogwart's student, and he was very excited. He only had the vaguest idea of what type of magic was taught in Charms class, but the word charm had very positive connotations, both because Alfie considered himself a charming guy, and also because Alfie's muggle grandmother had often spoken of charms. Supposedly her ancestors had been the sort of people who were paid to make protective charms for their neighbors. Whether they had been actual witches and wizards or some kind of muggle scam artists Alfie had no way of knowing. If they had been frauds, Alfie didn't hold it against them. More power to them, he thought. Convincing people to buy 'magic' bottles of urine and thorns took a special kind of charm after all. Alfie could admire the hustle.

It turned out Hogwarts Charms had nothing to do with witch bottles full of urine or protective amulets made of seaglass. It turned out it was wand magic, which was much cooler.

At least that had been what Alfie thought before he found out that today's lesson was about making teacups dance. He couldn't imagine any real world scenario in which dancing teacups figured as the solution.

Hiding his disappointment, Alfie took careful notes. He looked up periodically at the mention of anything peculiar, like the fact that the charm the Professor had selected as the first lesson for a bunch of 11-year-olds was one that could accidentally cause volcanos to erupt killing thousands. No pressure there.

When the time came to try the charm for himself Alfie was ready. He was determined not to blow anything up today.
