Riley sighed. She’d been staring at the same page for what seemed like an hour. She didn’t know why, but she was very distracted. She snapped the book closed. I suppose studying isn’t really possible right now… Riley thought to herself.

So Riley gathered her things and shoved her books into her blue satchel. She was about to leave the library when she heard someone grumbling about something, not too far away from her.

She wouldn’t have cared, but she thought she was alone. Someone else must have entered the library when she wasn’t looking. She creeped closer, careful not to expose herself. What? It’s not like she was eavesdropping.

Okay, maybe she was eavesdropping. But she was so bored, and she wanted to see who this mystery person was. As she drew even closer she realized it was a boy. She could only see him from behind, but she could see that he had maroon-brown hair and a pair of circular glasses.

Riley could also now tell that he was complaining about his homework, and that learning about magic was ‘useless’. She was about to open her mouth to say something when he turned around, making her jump slightly.

As he turned around, Riley could see his features a bit better. His eyes were a pretty shade of brown Riley hadn’t seen before. Like dark brown out with hints of red. He was slightly taller than Riley, but he didn’t look much older than her. He had short wavy hair that seemed to fall into his eyes a bit.

Riley realized she was staring, so she began to speak quickly. ”Sorry to startle you…”, She offered a small smile. ”I’m Riley. Did you need help with that?” She nodded her head towards his homework.

The library was deafeningly silent, only broken by his occasional grumbling. There weren’t any students in there, his peers had likely settled down in their dormitory rooms chatting or sleeping. Yet here he was complaining that magic was “useless” and ruffling his hair like a madman burying his anger. Pages were flipped, the wand swung as he muttered the incantation written on the book.

“Wing-gar-dium levi-o-sa.”

The boy glared at the feather in front of him, as if he’d lecture it for forty minutes if it didn’t float as he intended. The feather barely twitched at his incantation, his spell didn’t work as it should. Mercedes stared at the book with disgust, taking off his glasses and pinching the bridge of his nose like a frustrated old man.

“I can’t believe this.”

He muttered in a flat, unreadable tone. The soft sound of rattling could be heard, someone was cleaning up to take their leave. Followed by the sound of footsteps that had an abrupt stop. Was someone here? Mercedes snapped his neck in the direction of the sound, and there he found another Ravenclaw. A girl with long brown hair and fair skin, standing there like a deer in headlights. The reason he was startled wasn’t that she was watching him. It was her eyes, dark blue that shone aqua, like a window that opened to the sea.

“Sorry to startle you…”

She said quickly with a smile, which Mercedes raised an eyebrow uninterestedly. When he was about to turn and study himself to death again, the girl added.

“I’m Riley. Did you need help with that?”

“Yes.”

He answered without a second thought. No hesitation, no doubt, just finality behind his tired deadpan face.

“The feather won’t fly.”
