Letters to the Lost Open

Bella wandered around the halls, just enjoying her day, when she saw a classroom door shut. She found it strange because so far, all of the doors she saw were open, welcoming others to come in and explore. Generally, closed doors mean DO NOT ENTER, but when Bella tested the knob, it wasn't locked, either.

She looked around, her senses alert, before opening the door and quickly sneaking in. It was an empty classroom. Normal. Nothing really going on inside. There wasn't anything peculiar, anything out of ordinary. There was nobody there, either. That when she saw a piece of parchment on the ground. It was titled, "Letters to the Lost."

Bella picked up the piece of paper carefully and read it out loud.

August 7th, 1952

Dear Stranger, whoever is reading this, I want to tell you something. There is something strange going on in this place, a mystery I can't unravel. I'm not sure exactly what's going on, but I know that there is a secret to be discovered. Last Friday, I felt someone watching me. Following me. Then, two days ago, a door I swore was open was strangely closed. It may be just a coincidence, but I kept feeling like something is out of place. I'm withdrawing from Hogwarts next week. My parents didn't like me here in the first place. I hope you, whoever you are, can solve this strange mystery.

From: A Hogwarts Student of 1952

Bella froze, dropping the paper on the table.
"What? This must be a prank," she muttered. "Not funny! Whoever you are!"
But she felt goosebumps raising on her arms, and she shivered, although it was a pretty hot summer day.
"I need to tell someone. This is too strange, too big, to do alone," she whispered. Tucking the piece of paper into her jacket pocket, she hurried off to find someone to tell.

OOC Notes: I was originally going to make this a big group event, but after writing it, it became quite different than what I originally thought it was going to be. I left the ending of the starting thread quite open-ended, so whoever continues the thread next can just develop it anyway they like! An idea is that every person who participates in this thread also finds a letter somewhere, and on the back of each letter is like a word or a puzzle or a clue, and then its like a treasure hunt/mystery sort of thing. :)

As @Bella Light was leaving the classroom in a rush she crashed straight into Xio, whom was carrying a few books and nearly dropped them, but didnt. She had found them abandoned in the hall and was going to "recycle" them. In other words, use the paper for arts and crafts, but no one had to know that.

"O-Oh! Sorry! Ooooohhh!! Bella! Careful you silly thing, you gave me a scare! Woah, are you doing okay?"

Xio said all at once as she leaned the few books she held against her hip, taking a brief concerned look over the shaken friend before her.

"What's going on? You found something? Is it a treat?"

Of course Xio would ask if it's a treat, her priorities were obviously not one that can be explained or justified. Xio tried to peek around Bella and noticed the old dusty room she had just left in a rush, a mischievous smirk slowly spreading on her face.

"Going into closed off rooms, Bella? I knew I was a bad influence! What you got there? Is it dangerous or mysterious? Dangerous AND mysterious?Let me see, let me see, let me see!"

Xio pressed as she jumped in place but not invading Bella's space, also being careful not to drop any of the books she held but a few strips of parchment slipped to the ground and she quickly snatched them up and tucked them ruthlessly into her robe pocket.

The note Cas founded tucked inside an old journal in his drawer in the Hufflepuff Common Room was interesting. The rest of the journal simply detailed various plants and their uses, but the note was mysterious, dangerous-seeming, and written in a completely different hand. He'd studied it a few times now and still couldn't make complete sense of it; it felt like he was missing pieces of the puzzle and that more was required for a complete picture.

Working his fingers into the crinkles across the parchment's buttery paper, he reread it once more, lips twitching in the ghost of the words:
--think I've uncovered what may be happening. I don't trust anyone, though, so I've split the information up so no one person can find it. I figure only those who can work as a team will be able to discover the whole truth, which will hopefully prevent it falling into the wrong hands.

If not, I expect it won't be my issue anymore. After I complete what I've set out to do, I expect most issues won't be mine anymore. If you find this... be careful. Once you learn the full extent of what's been going on, it's likely this bind I find myself in will pass to you too.

From: smudge, 1953
The name was smudged out so there were no clues there, which left Cas with precisely zero leads. His plan was to go through the library archives to see if he could find anything about a Hufflepuff student from 1953 who was interested in plants to determine if he could figure out who'd written the book he'd found, but he wasn't sure how helpful that would be if they hadn't written the note inside of it. On the back of the note was a drawing of plant that could potentially be dittany, however that might've just been the original journal owner doodling.

Lost in thought, he almost didn't notice the pair of girls until it was too late. Or, well, it was too late. He couldn't avoid them, and couldn't help overhearing what the Ravenclaw girl said. Dangerous and mysterious... and it seemed they were referring to a piece of parchment held by the Slytherin girl.

It couldn't be...

"Excuse me," he interrupted quietly, a serious and calm contrast to the excitement of the Ravenclaw. "I couldn't help but overhear. You wouldn't happen to have found a dangerous and mysterious note from the 1950s, would you?"

Xio slowly turned with barely contained excitement and amusement towards the Hufflepuff boy who approached them, she gripped the books on her hip so tightly her knuckles slightly whitened as she did her best to restrain the obvious squeal she was holding in.
"Ooooooh?...Whyyyyyy doo yoouuuu assskkk?"
She drew out with her voice pitching upwards at the end of the question, her eyes sparkled with intense need to be told something that would delight her. She shifted closer to Bella to stand beside her so she could get a better look at @Casimir Beaumont, she immediately noticed how he spoke softer at first, hesitant. She acknowledged then at this point that it mightve just been his nervousness, or maybe she was being too aggresive, or probably both. It was usually both.

Typical of Xio, the awkwardness did not stop there as she tried to see if the boy had anything in his pockets, but the Hogwarts robes he wore made it impossible to ascertain what could be contained in them, and her "not-so-subtle" leaning side to side was very distracting. She leaned too far on one side and nearly dropped the books she was holding, luckily she readjusted her grip but still more paper slipped from the books and slowly drifted down to her feet. She muttered a curse as she stooped down and grasped the papers in a crumbled mass and again, shoved them ruthlessly into her robe pockets. She was starting to gather so much loose paper in her pockets that the rustling of crumpled paper shifted everytime she moved.
"Ignore that. My name is Xio, I see that you're a Hufflepuff, so is my sister! You look concerned, is everything okay?"
She said in one breath as she resettled the books she was holding against her hip again.

She shouldn’t even be here. Oh God, this all felt like breaking some kind of law. It felt like a criminal offence. In reality, it’d lose her a few house points but it most definitely was equivalent to breaking rules in her textbook. This side of the castle was unknown to her, definitely not in a good way. Her boots clicked against the stone floor in a sound that seemed ridiculously loud. It felt like walking in the world’s most quietest library wearing heels (not that she’d ever wear one). The corridors felt like they would never end. Time stretched past by as did her uneasiness.

But it was too late to go back now.

There wasn’t any room in sight for a long time. Just twists and turns, her mind working overtime to remember all the forks in her path and which way she had, and a heart beating too wildly. Finally, there came a door. She’d expected something grander, like a huge archway with candles on the sides. Disappointment pricked her like a small pin. Just to be safe, she placed her ear on the door. Muffled sounds were heard. Nicole felt a whoosh of relief. At least she wasn’t the only stupid kid that’d wander God knows where. She opened the door, with little to no force required. The people in the room were first-years. Yes, they were really stupid. She had no doubts in that.

She recognized Bella. It wasn’t really that hard to spot a Slytherin that and showed her much kindness. The others were a Hufflepuff boy and Ravenclaw girl. The trio didn’t really notice her. Nicole had that way of walking; people didn’t know when she entered. Mama called that she walked like an angel, her feet barely touching the ground when she ran. It was a dirty old class. She scrunched up her nose when the smell of rotting potions filled the air when she explored a bit. Raw milk and rotten eggs and like a poultry farm. In a bad way. There was a piece of parchment on one of the tables as she walked by. Nicole almost didn’t see it until the sunlight fell on the seal at the perfect angle.

Curiosity killed the cat.

She felt like Pandora when opening it. The crest of Slytherin was stamped on it. Huh. The paper was already yellowing, but the ink didn’t smudge a bit. It was still there, sharp cursive lines and cold words on the paper written in an elegant scrawl.
To the person reading this,

Well, hoping that you’d be a person having at least half a mind to understand whatever I’ve written here. You’d be the biggest idiot if you hadn’t noticed how some painting don’t even move while others screech on forever. You must be buzzing like an annoying little bee to know all the answers this mysterious and godforsaken place has. How did Headless Nick lose his head? Why was the Chamber ever opened? Oops. Guess you didn’t know that, stranger. Ah, I don’t blame you. Perhaps you’d believe me or not. In any case, you’d be smarter than my dimwit sister who had herself killed in this very castle. This place is brimming with secrets. The professors are too anxious to even say anything about it. Scaredy-cats. I’ve written a message in the back. Hopefully, you wouldn’t have the intelligence of a bloody pigeon and find the answer. I’ll be waiting for you, dear stranger.

Prefect of Slytherin, 1953
Her heartbeat almost stopped. She didn’t want to open it alone. Blood roared into her ears. This seemed just like The Secret Seven but make it a real-life version. The worst part? She was a character in it.

Irene wandered around in the corridor. A classroom door stood ajar, as if waiting for someone to get in. She walked into the dusty old room, gazing vaguely at the air. Her gaze shift on a piece of old parchment and, wondering, stretched out her hands and held it up, reading it by the dimly lit candles.

It was titled: Letters to the Lost

Irene frowned as she unfolded the parchment and read silently:

August 7th, 1952

Hello, whoever is reading this: I was a student at this school.
A large portion of the paragraph was smudged so she couldn't tell what it said. Irene frowned even harder; concerned. ----is happening, I think I've found out. I dared not to tell others about this; I mistrust them. Thus, I have separated the knowledge of this into pieces, hidden at different places at the school. All I can do now is pray that it will not fall into the wrong hands. And I know for a fact that those who can word united as a team can uncover the truth. I hope that you (whoever you are), will not abuse this knowledge.

---- smudged, 1952

Irene stared, rather alarmed. The signature was also smudged. Fear rose inside her. What did it mean? What exactly happened? Why did she find this? She was sure that she needed to tell this to a friend, as it said in the letter that only those who can work together can know the truth. She'll need to trust someone.

She slipped the parchment inside her robes and walked out of the classroom, making sure no one saw her. She headed towards the Slytherin Common Room, where she decided to talk to and ask @Bella Light if she knew anything of the sort too.

OOC: lol this thing reminded me so much about Dumbledore's quote; we are only as strong as we are united, as weak as we are divided and do what is right, not what is easy. Who's gunna continue next? 😋

Bella stood with the parchment in hand, completely confused. She was with Xio and Casimir, who she had just met. Casimir seemed to have found some letter, too.

"Wait, so, this Hogwarts student who was here in 1952 and 1953, which we determined to be a Hufflepuff, found secrets and decided to write letters about them that no one found until we did? How does that even make sense?!?!" Bella threw her hands in the air, exasperated. She turned around, spinning in circles and glaring at the walls, as if they held something that she needed to know.

"Xio, Casimir, what do you think about -- ahh! Nicole! You scared me!" Bella yelled. She saw her friend and partner from Potions Class approaching them, parchment in hand.

"Wait, don't tell me, did you find a letter too? Oh, sorry! Casimir, Xio, this is Nicole, my friend and partner from Potions class. Nicole, this is my friend Xio from the first day of school, and my new friend Casimir who I just met like five minutes ago," Bella explained, sneaking a look at Nicole's parchment. On it was the Slytherin House Symbol.

Bella frowned. Maybe she should see if someone in the Slytherin House found something.

"I'm so confused...but guys, do you mind if we get out of here first? This classroom is giving me some scary vibes."

I was in the library as usual, browsing through the shelves for something my hungry brain could snack upon. I wasn't in the mood to read about my usual subjects, I needed something much, much more different. Perhaps that was how I ended up with a piece of crinkled yellow paper, with an archaic scrawl was a note etched onto it. I'd found the note in a book about ancient magical Artefacts. The note read so—

I found it, finally! But I think they know too. What's about to happen is not something I can predict. They're after it, and probably after me too, but I'll never tell them, I'll never utter a word.
I've hidden it in so, that only those who are worthy will find it.
So, dear reader, it is quite fortunate (or perhaps unfortunate) that this note found it's way to you.

Clever game of hide and seek
This game is not for the weak
Perhaps you'll find it in the deepest hole
Or perched somewhere high above
Where luck leads you, let us see
Remember, you can't see the forest for the trees

~1953
A note with a riddle on it, now that's more like it. I stood there contemplating about the message. It's dated 1953, but no name mentioned. Why was this inside that book? What did this person find? Who were after them? I picked up the book and walked along the corridors, my mind still occupied with the mystery I was determined to unravel.

I suddenly heard muffled voices from inside a classroom. I peered in to find a few students, none of whom I recognised. They seemed to be first years. What were they doing in an empty classroom? Perhaps they'd lost their way. I spoke to them, "Hey guys, it seems you've lost your way... what's that? They seemed to have a piece of parchment quite similar to the one I'd found. All I could see of the parchment was the year set in the 1950s. "Where'd you find that note?"
