Nicole huffed out a breath as she raced down the stairs. The castle was still very much new to her, no matter how much she’d argue otherwise. Thanks to some third-year pranksters, she’d lost her way and somehow had landed up in Ravenclaw common room. After stuttering out her apologies and looking redder than a ripe strawberry, she’d hurried out, wincing when some of them grumbles curses and swears at her. Oops. It was an honest mistake. But luckily, she shouldn’t be so late to class. Probably one or two minutes, give or take. She’d left early for the class. Call it anxiety or nervousness.

The first thing that she noticed were the chills of the dungeons. They excluded a different type of cold, making her wish that she’d brought her sweater along with her. She balanced her books on one hand while the other wrapped the yellow-and-black scarf around her neck. Much better, but not enough to make some colour pop up in her cheeks. Finally, she reached the class. It was dimly lit, with candles hanging and cauldrons bubbling and boiling in the corner. Lastly, the vials of ingredients caught her eye. They were all carefully arranged on a shelf that seemed to be towering. It was at least twice or maybe thrice the size of her. She peered closer to look at them. Nicole read some of the titles. Eye of Newt. Unicorn’s blood. It made her queasy.

She had been so lost in her own world that she didn’t even realize the class had started to fill in. It appeared to be a joint one, first-year Hufflepuffs and Slytherins mixed. Her own house-mates ignored her, while the Slytherins would occasionally shoot dirty sneers in her direction. Blushing in embarrassment despite her faltering bravado, she chose a table that was somewhere in the middle. Not too close to the Professor and not too far away.

It wasn’t as though she’d expected someone to come up and introduce themselves, but there was a hope in her. It extinguished when no one did. Busying herself in ‘reading’ the textbook, she ached desperately for someone to come forward and well, practically force her to be their friend because she’d protest and be awkward at first before warming up.

Bella gasped, taking a breath of air as she rushed in to class just as the bell rang. It was embarrassing, really, being late to a class right next to her common room. To be fair, her last class was really really far away, on the fifth floor, AND she had gotten slightly lost (just a little bit), despite it being the third day of school. She simply wasn’t used to the fact that her school was a CASTLE. A literal castle, with towers, dungeons, and five floors.

As she made it just on time, several of her Slytherin classmates waved nicely and others giggled. One said, “You are just on time, Bella! I think the teacher is going to start soon.”

However, what Bella noticed was the fact that while everybody was sitting together with their friends, one Hufflepuff girl, based on the colors of her robes, sat alone at a middle table, where she looked like she was trying to blend into the background. It was a Slytherin/Hufflepuff joint class, which she was excited for because she could meet new people. However, the other Hufflepuffs looked like they were ignoring her, and several Slytherins were even sneering at her! Of course, others gave her “pity” looks, which Bella personally disliked, but they didn’t do anything to change the situation.

It wasn’t that she felt bad for the girl, not really. Rather, it was more of a friendly instinct to meet someone new. That was why, after checking in with her friends, she walked over to where the girl was sitting, now reading a textbook.

“Hey, hi! I’m Bella, a first year Slytherin, as you can probably tell based on the colors of my robe,” Bella grinned. “How are you today? Are you excited for Potions class? What do you think we will learn?”
