It was a mild day on the Hogwarts grounds, nearing the end of term. Several people clustered in groups near the lake, while others enjoyed peaceful solitude. Kennedy was one of the few in solitude. She had brought a blanket to sit on, and was lying on her stomach. In her hands was a book she had never read before, "A Study in Scarlet", which was a part of the mystery series of Sherlock Holmes. She had been bored and finally decided to read it. Her brother had been insisting she do so for a couple months, but she hadn't made time to get around to it. She had first laughed when Robbie had recommended a book to her, she hadn't known he read books. But as it turns out, there were a lot of things he didn't tell Kennedy. She wasn't used to them not sharing everything, but ever since he'd gone to Hogwarts, his life was suddenly "none of her business". They still talked, but it was never the same, they had different lives and Kennedy had a bit of a hard time accepting that.
She was only a few chapters in, but she was already within the pages, living the story along side the characters. She was loving the it, and was glad she'd finally picked the book up. As she took a break to glance around and people watch, she noticed a girl her age, holding a familiar book. Kennedy laughed aloud at the irony, but quickly clamped her hand over her mouth in embarrassment.

Sitting by the lake, with a book in hand, enjoying the cool summer breeze. What better way to relax than this. I was seated beneath a tree, engrossed in "A Study in Scarlet", one of my favourite Sherlock Holmes stories. I lived for the thrill that these books gave me. It was something that reality proved to be useless at. Of course, the incidents that happened in the wizarding world are no less thrilling and bone chilling than the stories I read, but I find living the suspense offered by fiction to be far better.

Indulged between these pages, I always found a new version of myself, sometimes someone whom I wished to be; sometimes someone whom I already was, but hidden beneath layers I'd built over. Amidst these pages, I couldn't be tamed, my mind felt... Free. There were no external expectations to live up to. Nothing I needed to uphold. I couldn't be judged, I just needed to exist and be myself.

I've always wanted to be a detective, especially because of two people- Sherlock Holmes, and Miss Jane Marple. I loved those characters and wanted to be smart, fearless, confident, and persistent just like them. I smiled as I read a line in my book, "There's the scarlet thread of murder running through the colourless skein of life, and our duty is to unravel it, and isolate it, and expose every inch of it." Wow, just wow! That's exactly what a great detective must do. That description is quite fascinating indeed.

Suddenly, I heard a vivacious laughter. I turned my head to spot a girl with beautiful blue eyes and brown hair, who looked my age. She clamped her hand over her mouth as she suppressed her laughter. She also seemed to be reading. Then I noticed her book, it was also "A Study in Scarlet". Oh my god! We're reading the same book! I held up my book for her to see and smiled brightly. I walked towards her and said, "Heyy, looks like we're reading the same book. How great is that! I chuckled slightly before adding, "I'm Avery, what's your name?"

Kennedy flushed red when the girl who was reading the same book looked over at her. She debated quickly looking back down at her book, but it was too late, the girl was already headed her way.
"Heyy, looks like we're reading the same book. How great is that!" The girl laughed, and Kennedy gave a sheepish smile
"I'm Avery, what's your name?"
Yes, Kennedy had remembered seeing Avery around Hogwarts some. She was a Gryffindor and seemed like a ball of confidence. Though it might seem odd to anyone else, she reminded Kennedy of a duck, the Black Swedish Duck to be specific. The Gryffindor's dark hair matched the duck's dark color, but there were personality similarities too. Duck's are usual characterized by their friendly nature, as well as their determination. Kennedy didn't know Avery well, but in the few times she had seen her, those qualities stuck out to her.
"Kennedy," She whispered, but then a little louder said, "I'm Kennedy."
Not wanting to let the conversation drop in to an awkward silence, Kennedy continued speaking
"I've only just started, its been on my TBR for ages and now felt like the right time to finally pull it off the shelf."
Kennedy folded down a small corner of the page she was on and closed the book shut. It was only a few seconds later when she realized her terrible mistake, and audibly gasped. Kennedy was used to dog earing her pages, its how she had always done it. But over the years she'd learned to never do it in front of other readers, they had the tendency to get offended by it. She glanced up at Avery, wondering if she'd have a reaction.

The girl introduced herself as Kennedy. She quickly added that the book was on her TBR for ages, and that she'd just started it. I replied, "That's cool, Kennedy. It's a re-read for me though, it's one of my favourites." I watched as she dog eared her book. She suddenly gasped and glanced back at me. It took me a few seconds to realise why she'd gasped. I'd first thought she'd realised something about the plot, a clue perhaps, that always somehow seemed to happen to me. But it was because she'd dog eared her book. A lot of readers often didn't like dog earing books, and I was not one of those readers. I pretty much picked up the habit from my grandma and my dad. I added, "Don't worry, I dog ear my books too. I've hardly ever used bookmarks, unless it's one of those strings that come attached with the spine.

I sat down next to her, the grass slightly tickling my ankles. I spoke to her, "So, what genre do you enjoy reading the most? I love mysteries, but I'd probably go for fantasies as well. I usually read muggle books though, I'm not quite familiar with wizard authors. One thing that I loved about muggles was how they didn't even need magic to do most of the things wizards did. In my eyes, even muggles had magic, just a different kind than us, and that magic was always beautifully expressed through art and literature.

Kennedy was relieved as Avery admitted she had the same habit of dog earring book pages.
Avery then came down to sit next to Kennedy. Kennedy became a little anxious and excited all at once. She wasn’t the best at making friends or starting conversations, but Avery taking the steps to continue conversation made the idea of small talk seem slightly less daunting.
“So, what genre do you enjoy reading the most?” Avery asked, and then she went on to describe some of her favorite genres. The two girls had several things in common; Kennedy was most surprised to hear that she liked fantasy and that she read muggle books.
“I also most read from muggle authors, either fantasy or coming of age novels.”
Kennedy never would have admitted these things if Avery hadn’t first. She worried other people would think she was odd for reading books written by muggles, or stories about magic when everyone around her could do magic in real life. But Kennedy loved the way the stories were written, the main character always had to overcome some big obstacle and it all ended up better in the end. It gave her so much hope. She loved seeing a version of her world through a creative lens of people who didn’t even know that magic was real and right under their noses. She thought about her dad for a moment, how he had been just a normal muggle who could only experience magic from the pages of a book, but now he adored magic. Kennedy sometimes wondered if he ever got sad thinking about how he would never be able to do magic himself, but he had told her before that he was perfectly happy cheering on his family, like the sidekick in all the good books.
“Not to pry or anything, but what is your blood status?” Kennedy asked. She hoped she wasn’t overstepping, but she wanted to understand Avery better. Was Avery just like her and had a family member who had gotten pulled into the magic world they always wished existed, or had Avery herself been the first in her family to be able to experience a life just like her favorite stories?
