At last, Aurora's grades were improving. Not by much, unfortunately. Let's not get carried away. But they had improved just enough for her mother to finally let her rejoin the broom racing team, which Aurora considered a far more important achievement than anything academic related.
By the time training was over, the sky had gone completely dark. Exhausted and still slightly sweaty, she made her way back to her dorm, only to find some students lingering outside the entrance.
They looked quite young, Aurora barely interacted with those tiny confused babies who still had hopes and dreams and probably zero experience in fighting cursed spiders in the forbidden forest.
"What are you all doing out here?" The girl asked, approaching them. Some were trying to solve the riddles, but unsuccessful. Her face lit up with confidence.
"Oh, a riddle? Is this your first time solving one?"
She stepped forward. "Move aside, leave it to your upperclassman, I'll recue you all" She said as she placed a hand proudly against her chest.
"You see, I've basically been doing this my entire life, I've lived here for six years anyway."
That was a big fat lie. Approximately ten percent of the Ravenclaw riddles Aurora had solved were through sheer luck. The other ninety percent was someone else solving it whilst she stood nearby pretending to think very deeply, then she would follow behind another student and hoped nobody noticed.
After six long years as a Ravenclaw, people still couldn't make sense on how Aurora had ended up there in the first place. She wasn't particularly studious, she hated reading anything longer than three pages. And in almost every possible way, the complete opposite of what a textbook Ravenclaw would be.
What is friendship?
She froze as she stared at the door, and the door stared back.
"What is friendship?"She repeated slowly. "It's when..."She began forming a thought. "When two people..." She paused, buying herself a few precious seconds. "...are friends?"
Aurora nodded to herself. "That sounds correct, right?"
The door, unfortunately, remained firmly closed.
"Okay, friendship is when you like someone?" Nothing."When you give them food?" Nothing. "When you hate the same person?" Still nothing.
She stood there for another few seconds, hoping the answer would simply appear in her brain. Her head was currently occupied with broom racing, dinner, and whether she could somehow blame this entire situation on exhaustion.
Finally, the seventh year turned around. "Well," she said, suddenly checking the imaginary watch on her wrist, "I would love to stay and help you all, but I've just remembered I have something extremely important to do, upperclassman business!" She added quickly, already taking a step backwards. "I'm a busy girl, Haha!"
Aurora pointed accusingly at the door. "Clearly this one is defective!”

Xio witnessed the next three attempts and added them to her sketch book with a laugh full of equal excitement and disbelief.
"That's another three for the list! We broke double-digits everyone! Let's see if we can get it going!"She cheered triumphantly until @Nick Jameson had gone unresponsive and she simply stared at him from the banister she was still standing a top of.Tally: |||| |||| ||
"...did he just lose to a stone door? Well, like my pa used to always say, 'the difference between idiocrasy and science, is simply writing it down', so we shall write it down!"
She then added to her sketch book the following notes under the tally marks:
Eagle door: 1 / Student body: 0"Man, I didn't think we would start racking up bodies just to get into the Ravenclaw Common Room. My parents are going to LOVE reading about this in my owl...that is, if we ever get in!"
She then took a moment to look at the cluster to dejected students huddling at the door entrance, hoping and waiting, for someone who would be able to get the door open.
Then she realized this was one of the most fun experiences she has had during her first year at Hogwarts, she was thrilled to see her cohorts gather together and try to solve a common problem, even if all had failed up to this point.
It was fantastic failure.

"A wise girl knows her limits; A smart girl knows she has none."
Friendship is...

Mentions pretty much everyone, tags are sprinkled throughout the (very long) post
The answer to her question was turning out to be that they were stuck in a Manticore Glue of their own making. The eagle knocker deserved some of the blame -- what kind of riddle was what is friendship? -- but she thought her housemates were maybe escalating a bit quickly. Saturnalia had the better idea sitting against a wall to wait it out.
A very hyper first year (@Xio Arcana) was the next to join the mix. Aislin could do hyper, but maybe not at this time of night. She blinked a couple of times through the instant rant. Psychological warfare might be going a bit far... but friendship certainly was not whatever relationship the Ravenclaws had with their door. "I don't think it's trying to trick us," Aislin offered, since she should probably try to moderate rising feelings as the prefect in this situation. "It's wanting us to think, and usually to think creatively."
The next girl, fairer-haired and much quieter (@Marigold Wesley), actually tried to answer. Her answers were all solidly within-the-box, but worth trying all the same. "Not long, we haven't tried many answers," she assured her. The other girl disagreed and was moving around a lot. Should Aislin tell her to be careful climbing on the banister...?
Then @Fawkes Chaos showed up, in all her chaotic glory, and Aislin forgot to worry about it. Aislin liked Fawkes, she really did. Her fellow captain had a heart of gold, had saved her life. In this moment, though, she was Exhibit A of unnecessary escalation. She tried to answer, tried to negotiate, and then tried to punch the solid metal, presumably unfeeling, beaked knocker. Aislin's nose scrunched and shoulders curled in at the sound of it, and this was not her first time hearing bones break (her ribs came to mind), but that didn't make it sound any less painful. As Fawkes started sobbing, her own inner calmness crumbled. A tricky riddle wasn't the end of the world, but this was bad.
"Fawkes," she called, hand hovering by the girl's shoulder. She followed her down to the floor, cross-legged as Fawkes crouched. Curled into herself, really. Aislin clenched her jaw and cursed her lack of healing spell knowledge. "Can I see?" Not that she would know what to do with what she saw. She remembered how severely broken bones hurt, though, like if you jostled them the pain was going to kill you, so she wouldn't insist on it. "Or... do you want to go to Hospital Wing?"
Their semi-savior came in the form of one of their yearmates. @Tina Carilla had studied ahead. She also didn't sound any degree confident in her ability to do this, but Aislin wasn't in a position to say anything about that. She was just glad the bandages worked to stabilize the damage and stop the blood. Awkwardly, she pat Fawkes twice on the back, then planted both hands on the floor behind her to look up at the mini crowd. Tina had moved right along and taken a stab at the riddle... sort of. It was hard to listen to.
"Are you sure you've ever had an actual friend?" Aislin asked, completely genuinely. It caught up to her after a minute how that might sound and she winced. "Jus' sounds like they weren't really caring about you, is all," she mumbled.
A boy arrived (@Jeremy Slater) and someone finally seemed to be on the same page as her. They needed riddles, not dictionary definitions. The events of the last few minutes had worn her out too much to engage fully, but she pointed at him in a yes, that gesture. His rambling about ships kind of lost her, but oh well, it didn't work anyway. Half-heartedly, she countered, "'S'not broken." Probably. She didn't need anyone else resorting to physical violence against a door.
Hyper girl was on her nerves (who bloody clapped when someone broke their hand?) but she didn't think that could be her problem right now. "Can you not mess about with falling off the stairs?" Prefect training had really not covered this at all. She was going to have to start channeling her mam to keep any sort of order here, and her mam was only used to wrangling one kid at a time.
Finally, someone older (@Aurora Ranvier). Aislin could have cheered. Her name was Aurora, Aislin was pretty sure, and she approached with confidence, with poise. But then she also gave a definition and Aislin looked up at the ceiling, seeking strength. Aurora immediately tried to leave, too. "You at least know healing spells, do you?" In other words, please, please help.
If she'd shown up later and hadn't been entrusted with this prefect badge, Aislin might have done the same as @Andrea Woodsburn. Her yearmate was smart enough not to do anything stupid. Hopefully smart enough that she was busy thinking about what the answer might be? Aislin hadn't had a spare moment to properly try, and the arrival of one @Nick Jameson ensured she wouldn't have such a moment anytime soon. He was on the duelling team, now, but apparently he thought with all the witless disgrace of someone who needed to be reminded punching was an illegal duelling move. "Wait--" she called, but much too late. He chose to use his head and promptly passed out. For worm's blind, dirt-eating sake.
Aislin was generally a pretty chill person. She didn't scare easily, she approached the world with an easy curiosity. Weird riddles and weird people were right up her alley. But she was maybe, just a little, reaching the threshold for her first-ever nervous breakdown. Blacking out was really bad, right?
She took a deep breath and counted to five (her nan taught her to count to ten, but she was unsure she'd have enough time to do that before they found themselves in deeper muck). "Can we all just slow ourselves down? Think about this, you know?" She stood on surprisingly shaky legs and stepped right in front of the door. "It's a mental barrier, not a physical one." That sounded quite wise, actually.

Carry on with the chaos! Aislin just will not let you slam yourself into the door or sling random spells at it without getting through her. Edit: She will let you hear the riddle.

Zach's internal speech = #005075 10th September 2026 | Evening
In front of Ravenclaw's door
Zach was one of the healer interns under Nurse Nancy McLoughlin's supervision. The boy was tired. What he wanted to do now was to be in his bed, playing with Zarcon for a bit before drifting to dreamland. He really couldn't wait for it.
Until he saw a group of Ravenclaw students standing in front of the Ravenclaw door.
"What the actual hell has happened?" he muttered. He didn't act immediately; he waited. One by one, they made an attempt to answer the riddle, but nil. None of them succeeded in finding the answer to the riddle. "Huh? No one could answer the riddle this time?" Zach tilted his head.
It wasn't the only occurrence of Zach waiting for others to answer the riddle from the damned door. This door surely succeeded many times in annoying Zach. It wasn't uncommon for Zach to be locked outside when he was in between life and death, to be embarrassed by wet pants or to look for another way. He planned to send a letter to his Head of House to change this door, but he kept forgetting. Blame his busy schedule.
One girl hurt her hands, foolishly punching the door and hurting herself. Zach winced. He went to the girl after Prefect Aislin approached her. No wonder she was chosen as Prefect. She was quick in managing a potential problem. He crouched down beside Aislin to check on the girl. "I can do some help if you want. I've been trained as a healer intern since I was in second year. Let me check your hands if you allow me." interacting with @Fawkes Chaos, mentioning @Aislin Darragh
Then he heard a familiar voice. It was one of the Ravenclaw Racers, Aurora. She also made an attempt to solve the riddle. He turned his head for a bit to see how she addressed herself as a Seventh Year who said that she would rescue them all. Though Zach had his doubts. And he was right; the attempts weren't successful. "Thank you for rescuing us, Aurora..." Zach gave a sneer. It wasn't with ill intent, but rather a playful jab at her failed attempt. interacting with @Aurora Ranvier
Then a boy did something definitely dangerous. He hit his head towards the door. And after that, he slowly moved back and took out his guitar, strumming a minor piece, and fell asleep (?). "Dear goodness..." he muttered, shaking his head. "It could be a brain injury..." he thought, but he was too tired to drag anyone to the Hospital Wing. "If anyone has strength, that boy needs to be brought to the Hospital Wing. Or if you see some elves, please ask them to transfer this... boy to the Hospital Wing," he held up to give any insulting remark to the boy. mentioning @Nick Jameson. I didn't make Zach interact with Nick since he stated any attempt would fail. Avoiding any healing failure attempt this time.
He saw another girl bring a stack of books and told them to grab one. His brows and eyes narrowed. He judged her really hard. "What in the world..." he thought. He didn't grab one. He let others do it. "Good luck with finding the answer," he said, smiling at those who grabbed the books. mentioning @Tina Carilla
Then he looked at Aislin as she told them to slow themselves down, and something about a mental barrier and a physical one. Zach slipped a giggle hearing that. "Sorry," he muttered in a low voice. He added a nod, trying to hide his previous act. "I agree..." The last one was a garnish.

Dialogue: #0065d1(English) #ce0909 (Japanese)
Thought: #4700cc Italic.A curious sight indeed. Dark blue eyes gazed distantly at the forming crowd, scattered in the corridor at the top of the spiraling stairs, all awaiting outside the entrance to the Ravenclaw Tower proper in curious positions, slouching, leaning, sitting. A large collection of younger members, it appears, but there was also at least one student who was more mature here. Minor chatter, but no one was going inside, in fact many looked a tad stumped, or in thought. Was the new riddle truly so difficult? Surely so many student's would have gotten it by now. Wasn't it supposed to take passable logic as answers? How very perplexing. Mikaela couldn't fathom what would be so complex as to keep them all out. He had arrived late, but still in time to hear some of the freshest conversation.
'Can we all just slow ourselves down? Think about this, you know?'
'It's a mental barrier, not a physical one.'
That's seems rather sensible.
Perhaps she's on to something... But what is the riddle?
That giggle from an older housemate was curious. Hard to assume if it was anestablished joking relationship or if that was reactionary. They did seem apologetic so perhaps the latter. What is- Oh my. One of the students appears to have croaked from- No. No, they're just unconscious. It seemed they were gathering quite a crowd of worried individuals, though they seemed unsure if they should do much themselves or wait on House Elves, perhaps Staff. Hard to say if moving someone is wise, without understanding their condition. What an odd place to black out. But then again, it appears to the entrance to do the dorms was blocked. He hadn't been here long, not at all, but surely this wasn't a common occurrence. This riddle is rather stressful if they all proved to not be wise enough as a group, let alone as individuals. This house truly sharpens the mind. Mikaela felt competent for his age, but maybe the others did too. Of course there was only one way to really find out what the chaos was about. He'd answered a few riddles in the past, he just needed to enter with a clear mindset, and think about this with pure logic. Right? Well. The young blonde approached, shorter than very likely every single housemate there. He was wordless, a thin line to his lips, eyes staring directly at the knocker as he approached, though he of course stopped just before reaching @Aislin. The gaze on the stone creature held, delaying a few seconds before he actually focused his view on her. He politely cleared his throat, preparing to speak,
"Please. Might I see what the riddle is? I'd like to hear it for myself."
Mika's voice rang out quietly, making it difficult for all to hear, thought try they might. His tone was soft, but curious, and his body language was rather antsy, perhaps eager. Can one blame him, for wanting to understand what all the fuss was about? To see if he could answer what others could not? He appeared to be waiting, to be offering respect. She was his elder, even if not by much at all. She also said something he considered even somewhat profound, so she had a level of respect above the norm already. After she moved, he reached for the knocker. Would he be another tally for Xio to add to the door? Surely not. He could prove his wit, right here, right now!
What is 'Friendship'?
. . .
Shattered. Confidence in him deflated, his brain functioning on high whilst inboth shock, and a state of understanding. The shock made his eyebrow twitch, his face contorting ever so slightly, crooning as if he misheard the question. Then he also understood, understood that all of them appeared to be here, having failed this very question, and unable to get inside. Did they all have some poor idea of friendship? Was this some kind of trick? Logical answers were clearly out the door, that's the first thing Ravenclaw would try. Sputtering off some loose or exact definitions from a book clearly weren't going to cut it. But then, how would he answer this? Could he answer this? Did he even know what friendship was, outside of its definition in a dictionary? What a numbing question, what a numbing riddle. After a few moments, his expressions grew slack, and returned to resting. A soft sigh escaped Mika, and he brushed a few locks out of his eyes, reaching up as he did to adjust his hat. His voice rang out softly, oddly soothing, just six simple words,
"Respect, loyalty, and trust in another."
. . .His gaze locked to the stone avian, expression deflating and softening with each passing second. Silence. What a pain. That was truly the best he could manage, the best he could fathom. What was friendship if not that? He couldn't understand it. A frown settled finally, his freckles slightly more visible as a slight redness touched his face. Another Ravenclaw who failed a riddle that sounded so simple. It was so late, and he was getting so sleepy. No wonder one of them passed out. How long had they been here? Clearly there wasn't much left to do, so Mikaela slinked toward a nearby unoccupied area, sliding down against the wall. A small notebook was retrieved from his coat, and he began to scribble down notes on the riddle. Truly the most perplexing one he's seen.

Friendship is...
Aster's eyes widened as she saw the crowd of Ravenclaws milling around next to the door to the common room. Oh, dear. Everyone seemed quite frustrated, which didn't bode well for Aster. She had only managed to open the door once so far during her short tenure at Hogwarts, and was still rather intimidated by it.
Aster considered her options, but there really weren't many. It was nearly curfew, and Aster needed to get through the door into the common room, just like everyone else.
As a first-year, she didn't expect to be able to solve the riddle when everyone else had failed, but she gathered her courage and asked to hear it, anyways.
What is friendship??
She thought for a moment, trying to consider all aspects of the question. She remembered her own friends, and how they added color to her life "Friendship is art?"
Nothing.
She tried again, this time remembering a time that her aunt had watched a muggle show. Jeopardy, was it? She had asked her aunt why the answer was a question, and she hadn't known. Maybe the knocker was thinking in reverse, and the answer was the question. "What is the translation for the Latin word amity?"
The eagle didn't move even a centimeter. Apparently it hadn't seen Jeopardy.
Oh, well. Perhaps the next person would have more luck. Aster stepped back, out of the way, and waited quietly for someone else to solve the riddle.

Friendship is...
Friendship.
That was the topic of the discussion. Everyone of the Ravenclaws over here standing with Aaron were all stuck on this question.
"Good thing I didn't use up my chance yet." Aaron thought.
He thought back of the different things people have tried, whether it was casting a spell, or using brute force, but nothing was working.
Aaron said, stepping forward and moving towards the knocker."Time to give this a shot I guess."
As the young Ravenclaw was saying this, he thought back to the points he was discussing with the Head of House on Sunday."The question is what is friendship. I believe it is what is happening over here, right now. All Ravenclaws stuck outside the Common Room are bonding with each other. The bond between two people which soon creates trust and a sense of belonging. A bond which is as weak as paper, but can be as strong as adamantium if needed.
And with that the nervous little boy ended his answer, which he hoped would get something down."My answer to the riddle is that friendship is the bond between two people which makes strangers as close as siblings."
Nothing. The knocker didn't even acknowledge the answer in a way.
Feeling humiliated, Aaron stepped back into the crowd, thinking of what will happen to all of them once they are caught.
As he was pondering over the possible punishments, he thought back to the methods of answering already done: there was simple answering, magic, and brute force. Nothing did anything. Then it struck him to one of his first potions lessons: poisons.
Aaron asked hopeful that someone may have heard him and acknowledged his idea. But with no immediate response, Aaron shrunk back and began thinking how he would be explaining detention to his parents over the next owl home. He wish he had Minerva with him right now to soothe him."I don't know if it possible, but could it be that the knocker is poisoned in a way? Can we give it some potion to speak properly? Maybe the Cure to Common Poisons or Uncommon Poisons? Or how about Veritaserum if anyone has any? Maybe the eagle is not in the mood of speaking the truth today?"
