The water was colder, much colder than she was expecting. Her toes froze at the edge, the tanned skin of feet and the sky blue paint that was slowly chipping off remained still. The sky above didn't reflect the same colors. It was pale, and a chilly breeze nipped at her exposed skin. She wore a light cream sweater cover up that draped past her bottom, ending right above her knees and a modest yellow one-piece swimsuit underneath. Everything here was so different. Even more different than Tenūsa would supposedly be, which although it wasn't home, it was closer than whatever this was.
A summer camp. With way more people than she had even considered there being from all walks of life and different parts of the world with one thing in common. The ability to possess magic. Freya bit her lip, sucking it into her mouth and biting down until a sharp tang of blood burst free, filling her mouth with regret. She felt so out of place, having only been accepted as a member of this unknown, but fairly large magical society until a few months ago. She hadn't even opened a spellbook or waved her newly acquired wand, or even step foot to where she would be studying for the next several years of her life. A thought, that although she tried to push to the side, it wouldn't subside and it scared her to the bone.
Loud whoops and hollers startled her from her thoughts, making her brush her curls out of her face and suck back in the tears that were threatening to spill. No more crying. The water should've calmed her, but it made her uneasy, like a sailboat trying to survive a storm. Instead, she sat down on the bank, drawing her knees to her chest and let the ripples lap at her feet. She'd steady her breathing with the quiet sound of the leaves rustling and let her gaze unfocus as she stared out at the vast lake. Her hand darted to the Hei Matau (hook) necklace her parents presented her before she departed and clung onto it desperately. She wanted to go home.
