"Oh yeah, you gonna cry?"
There are around 241 species of woodpeckers scattered around the globe, 11 of which are native to Europe, and only 1 of which can be commonly found in the Scottish highlands.
Kennedy sat on the edge of the courtyard fountain, sketching away in her journal. Her subject was a great spotted woodpecker, perched on the tree in front of her. The bird was a beauty of black, white and red. It was not the best of models, as it kept shifting positions while it drilled the tree trunk with its beak. Kennedy made note of its movements, then continued on with her sketching, stopping here and there to make more notes, erase something she didn't like, or brush loose strands of hair from in front of her face. She hummed subconsciously and tapped her foot on the stones below while she worked. Her tapping synced up with the rhythmic thrum of the woodpecker's beak hitting bark.

It was not the most spectacular day outside, grey overhand blocked the sun and sent a slight chill through the air. Even though it was a little bleak out, people still gathered in the courtyard to enjoy the evening, not that Kennedy would have noticed. She was too deep into her work to spare a glance around.
It was her first full sketch attempt since the term had started and she had to work fast to ensure she finished before the bird decided to take off. This time last year she'd done at least three sketches, but over the summer she'd seemed to turn into even more of a perfectionist. She didn't want to half do anything, so she dedicated even more time to ensuring her art was as close to flawless as it could be. If someone were to look carefully through Kennedy’s journal they’d see a timeline of progress. She’d been given the journal for her 8th birthday, and as the years went on the research became more organized and the illustrations more detailed.
When Kennedy finished sketching in pencil, she decided to take it a step further. She reached down into her bag and fished out a small leather pouch that contained her oil pastels. She selected a vibrant red and continued forward with her art by adding shades of color.
