If someone were to ask Fawkes a year ago what she saw herself doing when she got to hogwarts, this would most certainly not have been her answer. Becoming duelling captain for Ravenclaw was a big surprise to her. The bigger surprise was the fact she took on a mentee to train for duelling.
Marigold Wesley, first year Ravenclaw and the person Fawkes had unintentionally adopted as a mentee. Fawkes was adamant on making Mari a duelling champion. She had told the girl that when Fawkes was done with her, she would be a force to be reckoned with. Fawkes had chased her around the castle for days trying to convince her into a duel. Well after a long week, she had finally done it.
Fawkes had found another first year willing to duel and had paired her with Mari. Might as well teach the younger Ravenclaw how to do a 1 v 1 duel before throwing her into a proper 3 v 3 duel. Well let me go over the rules real quick. You may only use spells, no physical attacks for the duel. No friendly fire, no illegal/unapproved spells and no potions. She said looking at the two duellists. Ready? Set? Go!

WC: 211I walked toward the fourth floor and made way for the Dueling Club, my heart dropping a bit lower with each step. I was so nervous for my first duel, even though it was unofficial and just for fun.
I reached the dueling club. I cautiously opened the heavy oak doors and peeked inside. The room was huge, and lighted up with hundreds or possibly thousands of floating candles. There were two figures silhouetted against the gentle and dramatic light of the torches. One I knew was Fawkes Chaos, the duel moderator. The other was my opponent, a person yet unknown to me. They were both standing in the middle of the room.
Fawkes spoke up when she saw me"Oh, here's your opponent, Marigold. Amanda Clarke, Marigold Wesley. Marigold is a Ravenclaw, Amanda is a Hufflepuff. You will be dueling each other today."
I carefully looked at this Marigold Wesley and reviewed her from tip to toe. She seemed like a nice person. I attempted to socialize; "Hi Marigold, I'm Amanda Clarke. I'm a first year Hufflepuff. Just like Fawkes already said." Fawkes looked at us. I looked at her back. I was pretty sure we were supposed to begin, and we did, after a minute or two of getting ready.

| ————— | If one would ask Mari if she'd like to be a duellist, she'd probably give them a look of pure confusion and horror at the thought of brandishing swords and trying to fight against someone. Alas, that's how it will be in a normal context. But she's not normal... sort of. Being a witch and studying in this school of magic had offered her basically everything out of ordinary. Just like learning how to brew questionable liquids with hopes that it won't explode right on her face... or wield a polished stick to perform magic properly. Duelling is something that she was fairly introduced with since the first week, all thanks to some upperclassmen she had interacted with. But on a much more unordinary level, she ended up standing right by the floor where students seemed to duel out of fun or out of pure competitiveness, beside the tireless captain that had chased after her for days, proclaiming that she will mentor her everything there is to know about duelling. Maybe because she got tired of being chased that she eventually gave up and let Fawkes dragged her into the floor. And now, she's in for a world of pain or something. Fawkes did mention the Hospital Wing was complete of its equipments... she thought quietly as she tried not to grimace or so. The moment a figure entered the room, she turned and met a pair of eyes resembling that of a warm coffee in a cup. The coppery curls were also outstanding in a way that she couldn't help but admire for a few seconds before she remembered that this girl is gonna be the opponent that she might defeat—or send her to the Hospital Wing. She gulped quietly and nervously met her observing look. Why is she staring at me from head to toe? "U-Um... yes. Hello. Nice to meet you too..." she stuttered before clearing her throat and looking away. As they stood by the platform, her mind raced with many thoughts, but one prominent one was of pure panic. What am I gonna do?! And as she heard the signal from Fawkes, she ended up questioning her sanity too. Why did I allowed Fawkes to drag me here again? |

As soon as the duel began both opponents immediately fired off spells. Fawkes watched intently not wanting to miss a single moment of her mentee's first duel. Of course, Fawkes was a fair and just duelling mod, she wasn't about to show any favouritism towards Marigold. But she couldn't help but silently cheer her on as she duelled for the very first time.
She watched as Marigold pulled off Flipendo flawlessly and hit Amanda straight on. Fawkes winced. That blow seemed to have done a lot. Flipendo was really bad to take head on, she was well versed after being relentlessly attacked by Flipendo in her duel vs a then 5th year and a certain Slytherin then first year. She shuddered at the thought of either of them. It was painful. She had passed out with multiple injuries.
Marigold wasn't gone unscathed though. She was on the receiving end of Incendio. And she had been set aflame. Yikes. That was going to hurt badly. Atleast the burns were easily treatable but still, being set on fire was never a pleasant experience. She was still delighted that Amanda had hit the spell though. She would always be glad when first years took interest in her favourite sport.

| ————— | Marigold felt like everything in her body was on autopilot the moment the duel began. She can't even remember when she had casted the spell or if it hit her opponent head on. All she knew was that she's actually fighting against someone which had her mind screaming in complete protest against her moving body. The fact that she was duelling was actually something no one who knows Marigold really well will believe. Even her parents would've been horrified to hear that their sweet little girl who was too shy to interact actually fought and hurt someone. And then suddenly, there was heat. She had been near fire more enough to remember the comforting heat, but the thought of the fire licking against her and searing her skin was enough to make her mind to blank out. It wasn't fire from the torches lined against the walls... but rather, from her. Her opponent had actually used a fire-based attack spell and set her aflame! Is this the end? Am I gonna die from being burned alive? But I'm still young, though—wait, why is my mind asking these instead of thinking how to stop the fire?! It was like a water splashed on her face, the realization had her body flinching in complete panic that she didn't even seem to realize that she gripped her wand tightly and... against the burning pain, moved. |

Ok. Focus. Time to cast my first spell. I concentrated hard on the spell and cast Incendio at Marigold. All of a sudden, she was aflame, and she looked like her mind blanked out. I literally just hurt someone, what should I do?? Wait, should I help her? I thought. No, don't be stupid, this is a duel, your first one Amanda. No need to be kind. Even after reminding myself that this was a duel, I still felt a little sorry for her. After all, she's aflame. Just as I was starting to think these cheering thoughts I was suddenly knocked down, and it took me a minute to understand the Marigold had shot the Knockback Jinx at me and it had hit me straight in the face. The force with which I landed on the floor was enough to shatter a piece of glass if you landed on it like that. Well, after all a piece of glass is very fragile and shouldn't be too easy to break. My thoughts swirled around as I fought against the urge to stay on the floor and go to sleep as I felt a little dizzy. I hurt someone, and they hurt me back, but I was brave enough to get up, and cast the next spell of the round.
