Millicent walked around the lake, surveying its inhabitants and gazing all throughout. The purple sky illuminated her vision to that of a cat's, showing her the wonders of the landscape. There were trees in the distance that swayed gently in response to the wind, rocky outcroppings that were sooth or rough depending on how close to the water they stood, mountains that stood tall in the distance, challenging any foe to stand them down or face their strength.

And the lake itself!

All this wonder, though, came with a sense of foreboding and anxiety for Millicent. She shivered as she walked around the lake, pulling her hat closer to her eyes and her robes around herself. She knew this place was full of magic-and probably magical creatures-and she was excited to meet them all, but she also felt anxiety about that. What if they weren't friendly? She hadn't exactly started classes yet and to say she was uneducated about the magical world was, in her opinion, the understatement of the century. Or centuries now.

She decided to take things one step at a time, literally, as she walked along the rocky outcroppings and stared out into the lake. One day, she thought, I'll understand this.

@Millicent Barnes.

It was right at the beginning of the school year, and I decided to take a walk outside by the lake. It really was stunning. I felt sorry for the people I had grown up with, who would never get to see the castle. But, again, I was glad. Hogwarts had been a fresh start for me when I was a first year, and it was going to be one again this year, taking new lessons, after finding out what had been happing at home for all of last year.
I sat down by the lake, tempted to dip a finger into it, but having heard far too many overexaggerated stories making me unsure what the giant squid was actually like. But, I still sat there, looking across the lake, until I heard someone coming.
I turned my head, seeing someone walking past. They seemed quite young compared to me, so probably a new first year. She was looking out across the lake.
I stood up, and carefully walked a bit closer to her.
"Hello."
I was a few meters away from her, but still speaking quite quietly, as normal.
"Are you a first year? I'm Mira, in the third year."
I looked back out across the lake, following her line of sight.
"It's so beautiful here."

Millicent startled a little bit, seeing her companion, Mira, sneak up on her like that. She internally scolded herself; she really needed to keep a closer eye out. She was at Hogwarts now and couldn't afford to let her guard down, even among fellow students.

"Hi, yes, I am," she answered, willing her voice to calm itself. This is a third year, Mill, don't embarrass yourself. "What house are you? I-I'm Hufflepuff."

Millicent decided to gaze at the lake again, feeling the droplets of rain soak into her hair and her robes and wondering if there were any good spots to learn new things or to spot new, magical creatures. From the minute she learned they existed, she'd been eager to learn about them, care for them and study them, as much as she possibly could.

Perhaps I'm too ambitious for a first year, she reflected, but at least I have an idea of what I want to do after school.

"What do you want to do after Hogwarts?" Millicent inquired and immediately, quietly cursed herself. She was supposed to be guarded with her fellow students, not opening her heart to them!

Though she supposed she couldn't help it. She'd always been social and now that she learned there were others out there with magic-not to mention the fact that she couldn't believe magic existed in the first place-she wanted to meet a lot of them.

“I’m in Ravenclaw. Hufflepuffs seem really friendly. Although I haven’t talked to many.”
The girl looked across the lake again.
I was pleased when she broke the silence. It had been slightly awkward. Although, I probably ought to be the one speaking, as I was the older one.
“I’m not sure what I want to do. I’m from a non-magical family, so I didn’t even know magic existed until a few years ago. But, I’m on the broom racing team, so I might do that as a job. But I haven’t actually done any official races yet. Or, being an auror. Maybe a teacher, but you don’t get to explore the world as much doing that.”
I paused for a few seconds.
“What about you? What do you want to do?”
I looked up into the rain clouds. I should practice flying in the rain. I could do wind, but never tried flying with water everywhere, except in lessons.
I looked at the girl. I realised I didn’t actually know her name.
“Oh, I forgot to ask. What’s your name?”
The rain started getting slightly heavier. I thought that I should probably go inside. Maybe to the library. Or, even better, go and get a coat and my broom, then come back outside. But, the girl seemed to be staying, so I didn’t want to just walk off.

Millicent smiled at her. "I think I want to be a Magi-Zoologist, if that's how you say it?" She let out a happy sigh. "And I understand. My mom mostly kept magic a secret from us growing up, so this all feels so new."

Obliviously, she didn't realize that the rain had continued on.

"And I think it's great that you do Broom-racing! What's it like and how do you stay on the broom? I always think I'll fall off."

The wind whipped her brown hair, but Millicent brushed it out of her face.

"And it's Millicent. Millicent Barnes. Nice to meet you, Mira."

And of course, at the moment, a lightning strike echoed in the sky, getting Millicent's attention like a fireworks display.

"OH-Oh my gosh, I am so sorry," Millicent said, her eyes wide with fear and embarrassment. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to keep you out in a thunderstorm."

From the other girl's kind look, she had noticed the storm indeed, but decided not to mention it to the first year.

"Why don't we continue this conversation inside, Mira, if you want?" Swallowing past a tendril of guilt, she pushed her words on.

"And please, you decide where we go. It's the least I can do."

“Magiczoologist sounds like a really interesting job. I’m only just starting care for magical creatures, so I’m not sure how it will go.”
When she said her name, lightning flashed across the sky. I watched as she finally realised that it was a storm, and she went very wide eyed.
“Don’t worry about it. The weather here is so unpredictable. I bet it’ll be sunny again in just a few minutes.”
I watched as she asked if we wanted to continue the conversation inside.
“We could do. I don’t mind where we go. Should we just start walking, and see where we end up?”
I started slowly walking back towards the castle, feeling the raindrops bounce off my head.
“So… where have you explored so far?”
In my first year, I hadn’t actually explored much. I’d found my classrooms, the great hall, Ravenclaw tower, and the library, but not much else. Actually, in the summer, I had gone outside a few times.
“Have you made many friends yet? There seem to be loads of Hufflepuffs this year.”
Asking about Millicent’s friends made me think about Gaia. She had been my best friend in the first year, but I just hadn’t seen her around for ages. Weird, considering we were in the same house, and same year.
I looked at Millicent, smiling.
“We’re almost back inside.”

Millicent felt very relieved; Mira didn't seem to be angry with her, which was good, and the storm itself might let up in a few minutes, which was awesome!

"Why is the weather here so unpredictable? Is it because it's around Hogwarts? And.... I haven't explored much." Millicent felt her shoulders drop. "I want to, but I'm a little nervous-I barely know any spells so far and..."

She let out a sigh. "I know a few people around here, but not as much as I'd like. Do you know any of the first year Hufflepuffs? Maybe you could introduce me. Or to the other first year Gryffindors, Ravenclaws and Slytherins!"

Millicent felt herself pause and then asked, "How are Slytherins here by the way? I'm a little wary of them to be honest; with them being sly, cunning and mischievous. Do you know any Slytherins? Are they nice or should I... keep my distance? I just don't want to be taken advantage of."

Millicent then remembered what the Ravenclaw had said earlier and brightened up. "Let me know how that goes, please! I'd love to know more, even if I can't take the class now." She fidgeted with her robes.
