Magical Accidents and Catastrophes
Department of Magical Accidents and CatastrophesThe Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes had perhaps received the least pleasant assignment. In the Ministry, this Department was responsible for repairing accidental magical damage or when Muggles became aware of wizarding activity. It was also responsible for being first on the scene when magical spells went wrong. They had to response at whatever time this happened, in case of an emergency they were the first at the scene.
Perhaps the Summer Camp Plan Committee could have been a bit more gracious with the time of day, alas that wasn’t the intention of the task.
At precisely four in the morning, before the crack of dawn even, loud alarm bells would echo throughout the Department’s cabins. While those in other cabins wouldn’t even hear those alarm bells and continue sleeping peacefully, the Magical Accidents and Catastrophes Department would be awake in an instant.
Doors would swing open and one of the members of the Summer Camp Planning Committee would storm in, calling out to wake the students and get them out of bed.
There was an emergency drill.
There was no list of instructions provided, detailing everything the Department was expected to check to ensure the safety of the camp. What was provided was a parchment that had “What would you do to ensure everyone is safe?” Written on it. This task required the ability to spring into action and be creative.
The Department members would be expected to get out of their beds and then work through the checklist and ensure that the camp was in order and accounted for. After all, what if there was an actual emergency? In a camp full of young witches and wizards, a spell could always go wrong.
And the best way to deal with a magical catastrophe was to be prepared before it happened.IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The alarm bells suddenly rang at exactly four in the morning.
I almost fell out of bed.
For a few second I just sat there, completely confuse trying to understand why there were loud bells rining when it was still dark outside. I could barely keep my eyes open.
Then the cabin door opened loudly.
"Emergency drill! Everyone out of bed!"
That woke me up properly.
I quickly pushed my blankets aside and got out of bed. Around mee everyone was doing the same. Some people looked just as confused and tired as I fel while others were already getting dressed.
I took my things and got ready as fast as I could. I did not really know what we had to do because nobody had given us a proper list of instructions.
Once I was ready I picked up the parchment we had been given.
There was only one question written on it.
What would you do to ensure everyone is safe?
I looked at it for a few seconds.
"That's so helpful" I said to myself.
There wasn't anything else to do now so I decided to use commmon sense.
Everyone seemed to be doing the task themselve so I did not wait around for someone to tell me what to do. I started with the most commonn thing.
I checked the cabin.
I made sure everyone had actually gotten up and left. I looked around the beds and checked if someone manaaged to sleep through that alarm. Thankfull everyone was awake and out of bed.
After that I went outside.
The camp looked completely different at four in the morning. It was completely dark and cold.
I looked around the area carefully.
If this would have been a real magical emergency the first thing I would want to know was what had happened and if anyone was in danger.
I checked if there were any signs of accidenal magic. A spell gone wrong can cause all sorts of problems that too in a camp full of young witches and wizard.
I kept thinking about the question on the parchment.
What would I actually do if something went wrong?
First I would make sure people were safe and move them to a safe area. There was no point in making things worse by havving everyone crowd around whateve had happened.
Then I would find one of the adult or people in charge and report the problem. If someone was hurt I would make sure they got help as soon as possible.
I also thought about keeping everyone calm.
That seemed important.
If something magical went wrong people would easily panic. And if everyone started running around without knowing what was happening it could make the situation much harder to clear.
I continued checking around the camp.
After a whil I stopped and looked towards the other cabins.
It was strange knowing that everyone else was sleeping peaceflly while our department had been dragged out of bed at four in the morning.
I could not help feeling a little jealous.
Yet I reminded myself that this was the whole point of our department. Magical accidents do not exactly care what time it was.
The members from our department were all awake. The surroundings looked safe. There were no signs of magical accidents or damaged tents or strange activiies that I could find.
I looked down at the parchment again.
I had answered the question in my own way.
There probably was no one prfect answer. The whole point seemed to be checking what we could think clearly without someone standing beside us and teling us exactly what to do.
I folded the parchment and started back towards the designaed area.
I was still tired.
Very very tired.
But at least I knew that if somthing actually happened I would not just stand there thinking what to do.
I had learned that the first step was to stay calm check that everyone was safe understand what had happene and then get the right people involvved.
For waking up at four in the morning I thought that was a pretty good start.
"Magic can make anything happen. It reveals itself only to those who have eyes to see it"

The alarms blaring at four in the morning did not immediately stir Xio awake.
It took about 2 rings of the alarm for her to finally sit up from her bunk, her bed hair a wild mane framing her drowsy face as she wiped a bit of drool from the corner of her lip. Xio was raised in a family of 7 other siblings, sleeping through alarms and loud noises was second-nature to her.
But the sleep was wiped away from her face immediately once she realized the situation might be an emergency, she launched herself out of the bunk and readjusted her pajama robe as she scanned the area and assess the situation.
"Emergency drill! Everyone out of bed!"
"I AM!"
Xio exclaimed frustratedly as she was fighting with a hair tie to get her wild mess of hair out of her eyes. She noticed that @Penelope Kneen had gotten up nearby and joined her to read the parchment over her shoulder.
Xio rolled her eyes with the absurd and vague question. What would you do to ensure everyone is safe?
"Sooo vague...Sounds like a trap..."
She said but she still followed the crowd out to the open air of the Campgrounds, leaving the cabin behind. The cool dusk wind and smell of dew in the air was refreshing, it helped soothe the beating of her heart in her chest. She started patrolling the area, walking into parts of the Campgrounds that weren't many people already patrolling, seeing if she can sense if anything was out of the ordinary.
Nothing immediately stood out. She also took this opportunity to get familiar with the Campgrounds, recognizing where each of the cabins were, who resided in them, and which ones were in particular at higher risk of being vulnerable.
Then after her patrolling, she specifically made notes on which parts of the Campgrounds would be good spots for both defensive and offensive positions. She secretly hoped there wouldn't be any real danger on the campgrounds, but the point of the task wasn't about 'what ifs', it was about how to act 'when' it happened.
Xio knew it would be important to ensure 3 things if there was ever an emergency:
It was only a few minutes before the grogginess of awoken at the crack of dawn was starting to catch up to her, but she shook her head vigorously, if this was a true emergency she couldn't afford to be feeling tired, she had to be ready.1. Assess the situation and ACT
2. Consider the best use of energy (helping escort people to safety, patrolling the area, etc.)
3. Consider the worse case scenario, and plan accordingly.
Eventually, she made her way back to the department's cabin and found Penelope there again, she smiled eagerly as she approached her.
"Gooooooood morning, heading back in to sleep? I don't think I can to be honest, too excited and all...I was thinking of finding something to eat, or maybe cause some trouble since they woke us up so early, sound up to it?"
OOC: I hope you don't mind me tagging off of you! Glad to found someone else from my Department!
