Damaris walked among the library shelves, lost in thought and surrounded by a multitude of books—some neatly arranged, others floating and drifting from side to side, a sight that still amazed her. She didn't know exactly what she was looking for: perhaps another book on Greek mythology, or one about the magical creatures that fascinated her and fueled her desire to learn more, or even an astronomy book she hadn't seen before.
"If I find one, I can show it to Damien..." she thought, running her fingers over the book spines and reading the titles, hoping to spot something that caught her eye. It had been a fairly quiet day; she had finished almost all her assignments for the week and, surprisingly, had some free time to explore—and what better place to explore than the library? She searched through the shelves, moving from one to the next while trying not to disturb anyone else who might be looking for something there. In an aisle between the shelves, while browsing the collection, she noticed a girl leaning against the window. The girl had blonde hair—bleached, Damaris noted—pale skin, and blue eyes. She looked upset; Damaris could tell by the way her arms were crossed tightly over her chest, her hands gripping her arms firmly, as if she were trying to release some pent-up stress or frustration. Although Damaris was shy and didn't usually enjoy talking to strangers—especially those who seemed upset—she decided to approach the girl and ask if she was okay. Even though she was easily startled herself, she wanted the people around her—even strangers—to be alright.
"Hey..." she called out softly, stepping closer so she was in the girl's line of sight rather than sneaking up on her. She offered a small smile as she leaned against the wall, trying to calm her own nerves as well.
"Are you okay? You seem a bit... tense. Is everything all right?" he asked, not wanting to come across as intrusive but wanting her to see that he cared about her well-being, even though he didn't know her.

Jay had been having a horrible day.
Scratch that, a horrible week.
She had been trying to research Quinn Starr, Sunny Valkyrie’s best friend who had disappeared ten years ago with no reason whatsoever. She had just stopped existing on records.
That was in fact, REALLY ANNOYING. Jay needed information and where else was she going to get it from? Sunny? Hell no! That’s the last person Jay would be asking for help at this point.
She put the book she was reading down on her table with an annoyed groan and looked at the pile of books she had found.
Maybe I’ve bitten off more than I can chew…
She thought, but quickly banished the thought, refusing to give up because it was boring and she hadn’t found anything yet.
Maybe I’ll take a break…
Jay leaned back in her chair, her face in a scowl of annoyance when she heard someone approaching her. Jay didn’t even have time to play dead before a voice came from in front of her. “Hey…”
With a quick glance upward, Jay saw a girl about her age with very pretty brown curly hair and insanely dark eyes, the girl was a Gryffindor. Jay could see by the black, scarlet and golden robes she was wearing.
Jay tilted her head, and gave the girl an odd stare as if to say ‘why are you here?’ But instead Jay just stared at her, and the mysterious girl spoke again, "Are you okay? You seem a bit... tense. Is everything all right?”
Jay nodded and spoke back to her, letting sarcasm drip from her words “oh yes, I’m just perfectly happy” she smiled too big and then dropped the act after a few seconds, ignoring the girl and reluctantly going back to her books. Now that she had said something rude, she felt the need to apologise.
I also don’t need three Gryffindors hating my guts
She thought bitterly as she put her book down on her lap, “look-” she started her gaze away from the pages and to the Gryffindor in front of her “-I’ve had a shitty…” she paused, looking for the right word “few months?” She questioned, maybe it was longer…
“Whatever, I’m not trying to be rude, I just have lots of problems” she grumbled, looking down at her book and seeing the long columns of names she immediately wanted to scream and yes. Throw the book at the nearest object.
They can’t make books SLIGHTLY more entertaining to study?
Jay questioned, her hair fading from its usual blonde to a dark red, the colour she associated with frustration and annoyance. As a Metamorphmagus, Jay could change her appearance and her appearance could just change. Without her consent.
Annoyingly it showed her emotions when she wanted it least and right now was one of those times.
With a sigh, Jay forced herself to breathe deeply in hopes that she would calm down before the book in her lap got a new home with the fish in the lake.
There is no synonym for cinnamon there is no synonym for cinnamon there is no synonym for cinnamon.
She repeated the words until she felt less like she wanted to create a new window feature in the wall beside her. As her hair slowly faded back to blonde she noticed that the girl was still there, just staring at her “you ok there?”

Damaris listened to and watched the girl, wanting to understand how to help her—if she even could or was allowed to. She hated seeing anyone frustrated or sad when she might be able to do something about it; it wasn't that she lacked shyness—she was indeed shy—but she possessed a certain "instinct" for these things. She noticed the girl's hair changing color, her eyes widening in surprise as she watched. The girl didn't seem at all startled by what was happening to her hair; she almost seemed used to it.
"Is that normal? I haven't seen anyone else here do that... well, then again, I don't pay much attention when I'm trying to keep to myself..." she thought, still watching curiously. Damaris was certain she must look like a little child seeing something for the first time—something that, to others, was likely completely ordinary. Realizing the girl had spoken to her, she snapped out of her thoughts and replied.
"I'm... fine... thanks. But... I'd feel better if you looked a bit better" Damaris said somewhat shyly. She didn't want to seem intrusive, yet she wanted to make it clear she cared about the girl, even though they had just met. With a small smile, she tried to lighten the atmosphere, which felt a bit awkward to her given the questions swirling in her mind.
"Your hair changed... color... is that normal?" she asked, afraid of sounding like a weirdo who didn't know what that was. She tried to calm herself, telling herself she didn't have to know everything; after all, she wasn't born to wizards—her father was a Muggle, as was her mother—so it was only natural that she wouldn't know every detail of the magical world.

The girl looked very unfocused when Jay spoke to her, before she snapped out of her daze and looked down at Jay and spoke "I'm... fine... thanks. But... I'd feel better if you looked a bit better."
Jay tilted her head and made a face in surprise and confusion "I definitely see why you are in Gryffindor," she shrugged "Hufflepuff would have been a good fit too" she trailed off, noticing how offensive she sounded.
See and you wonder why you have no friends...
She thought bitterly, annoyed at herself for even studying in the library at this time where it was busy, if she wanted to be alone she might as well have just gotten the books and gone up to her dorm room, she didn't mind Skylar being there since they were friendly with each other and she didn't stick her nose in Jay's business.
As she continued to scowl at the book, the girl spoke again with a question. "Your hair changed... color... is that normal?" she asked and Jay lifted her head slowly "oh" she said with a sigh and brushed her hair out of her eyes and they melted from the stormy blue they had been today to the earthy brown that she had been born with. "No I'm just a Metamorphmagus" she shrugged "you... don't know what that is do you?"
Jay had no judgment on someone not knowing what things were, she had been there a while ago but her mother was a witch so she knew the basics of how magic worked "I can change my appearance" her eyes flickered back to the blue "within limits" she sighed, going back to her book.
The library was quiet even though it was filled with people and others were talking together, studying or just having a quiet chat with their friends in using their free period like Jay. If her life was even the slightest bit normal, Jay would be studying Greek Mythology and painting but sadly, she had other, more pressing things to deal with first.
The name Starr had popped up a few times in her research but often lead to nothing except random facts, mentions or just supposedly 'well known' information. It had been new for Jay but hadn't showed her anything about what she wanted to know. There was no mention of Quinn, it was as if she had been scrubbed from the Starr family records.
Jay found that odd, mainly because it was as if Quinn had been entirely forgotten but Jay knew for a fact that Quinn had been an Auror and a good one at that, the one record (apart from the Trophy Room pictures) that had been found was her death ten years ago. Apparently Quinn had died while on a mission to detain a dark wizard or something of the sort, but Jay knew better because if Quinn had died on a mission, why would her name have been scrubbed from every record as if she had been hidden.
"Think Jay, think!" She muttered under her breath her foot tapped on the floor under the table as she bit her nails, settling deep in thought.

Damaris stood still, watching the girl as she sat back down at the nearby table piled high with books—a sight that caught her attention, as she had never seen anyone read so many books only to end up looking so frustrated. This sparked a concern in her, a desire to understand the reason behind it all.
Upon hearing the reason why the girl's hair changed color, Damaris had to make an almost superhuman effort not to gape in astonishment—especially when she saw the girl's eyes shift to a different hue before returning to their natural blue. It made her smile, her curiosity piqued even further.
"A Metamorphmagus... I've never heard of that" she said with a small smile, silently asking the girl with a glance if she could join her at the table to get a bit more comfortable. Seeing the girl nod, Damaris sat down opposite her, an almost endearing curiosity shining in her dark eyes.
"Well, it's not like I've heard of much, anyway..." she said with a small smile, though beneath the table, she was clenching her fingers—a telltale sign of the nervousness she usually felt around new people.
Noticing that the girl seemed just as distressed as before—if not more so—she spoke to her again, this time in a slightly lower voice.
"Are you really okay? If you want... I could help you with whatever you're looking for" she said almost without thinking, surprising even herself; yet, she didn't regret a word of it, genuinely wanting to help the other girl feel better and ease the tension and frustration that seemed to radiate from her.
"Are you looking for someone?" Damaris asked suddenly, picking up one of the books from the table beside the girl. She noticed the volumes contained files on missing persons—witches and wizards of whom all trace had been lost—and realized the girl might be trying to find a specific individual among the photos and records.
"I don't mean to pry... but I could help you, if you'd like—that is, if you want the help."
She clarified this, not wanting to come across as nosy or anything of the sort, especially since she hardly knew the girl.

When Jay changed the colour of her eyes, she noticed the girl standing above her seemed astonished by the change and Jay smiled a bit at that, it had been a while since someone actually thought her abilities were cool.
“A Metamorphmagus... I've never heard of that" the girl remarked, before sitting down opposite Jay. As she sat down, and Jay finally got a good look at her now that she was in her line of sight.
Jay didn’t really focus on appearances since she could change her own, and didn’t think that what you were born with said much about who you were so she never focused on appearances until someone was right in front of her.
The girl was in fact quite pretty, her hair had insanely defined curls and really dark eyes, she didn’t look entirely human and at Hogwarts, you could never tell with people here.
In her first year, Jay had met a Dhampir in her common room, she was a sweet girl but now that Jay knew about more people with abilities and things like that were around the school she had never assumed anyone and met was a ‘normal human.’
Then again this girl could just be a really majestic looking person but hey, it wasn’t for Jay to know anyway, but, it would be a lie to say she wasn’t interested.
"Well, it's not like I've heard of much, anyway..." the girl sighed, and Jay nodded in response. She had a witch for a mum, so she knew about magic her whole life but had only really been around it the last year before she came to Hogwarts. Apart from exploding a bubbler and her first sign of being a Metamorphmagus, she hadn’t really experienced magic outside of Hogwarts if it wasn’t directly related to school.
“Yeah I know what that’s like” she said, still quite focused on her book so that she was half listening half reading this boring thing, she really needed to find this damn name and she only had a few books left to look through unless she wanted to try breaking in to the restricted section.
That would end well
She was amused by the prospect of trying that, the thrill that came with the possibility of being caught was stimulating but she just decided to just go to Flourish and Blotts over the holidays, it wasn’t worth the trouble.
Because she was so focused on what she was reading, Jay completely forgot that she had company now until the girl spoke and outright scared Jay, "Are you really okay? If you want... I could help you with whatever you're looking for" she asked as Jay paused, yes it would be nice to have help but at the same time she wasn’t sure if this girl really needed to know what she was researching and why.
“Uh… maybe? I guess? I don’t know how to explain it without sounding…” Jay trailed off and didn’t finish the sentence.
Sounding like a fucking psychopath, oh yeah I’m just researching my mums dead best friend because I think she was murdered. Yeah because that’s a normal thing to research in my free period
“Are you looking for someone?” The girl asked, breaking Jay’s train of thought “yeah? Sorta?” she replied, unsure as to if she really wanted to share the information but then again, anyone could come looking for it.
“I don't mean to pry... but I could help you, if you'd like—that is, if you want the help." The girl said, clarifying she wasn’t just nosy.
With a deep breath, Jay pointed to the books “I’m researching about a woman named Quinn Starr” Jay started to explain but was careful with how she worded it, she wasn’t interested in really revealing the personal side of things “she was an Auror who died ten years ago, apparently on a mission” Jay muttered apprehensively, obviously not believing it “personally I think she was murdered” Jay shrugged, ignoring the various glances coming their way from around this area of the library.

Damaris listened closely to the girl's explanation, trying to understand who she was looking for and what had happened to her.
"Auror? What is that?" she repeated, not knowing what that was; as a Muggle-born, there were still aspects of the magical world she didn't know—things that, to be honest, fascinated her just as much as they terrified her.
Upon hearing that the woman might have been murdered, her eyes widened in surprise; she hadn't expected such news, though she was grateful for it, as it meant the other girl was opening up to her and asking for help.
"Quinn Starr, then... which books haven't you checked yet?" she asked with a small smile, scanning the book in her hands for the woman's name. There were so many—perhaps too many—and her head was already spinning. It was an unusual reaction for her; she had been a reader since childhood and had never felt overwhelmed just by the sheer volume of words on a page, though this feeling also piqued her curiosity.
"I can check this book and keep going with the others... you don't have to do it alone" she said, beginning to read through the names, dates, and details of the people listed inside. So far, however, there was no mention of Quinn Starr—neither as a primary subject nor in connection with any strange incidents.
"By the way, I'm Damaris" she said with a smile, no longer feeling the nervousness she’d experienced earlier. She glanced up briefly before looking back down to continue her own research.
Hours had passed in the library without Damaris even realizing it. She kept turning pages, stretching her neck occasionally and shifting in her chair to get comfortable as she searched. She had moved from book to book, now better understanding the tension she had sensed in the girl when they first spoke. When he looked up and sighed, he noticed a few other guys in the library glancing at the girl sitting across from him—something that caught his attention, as he hadn't noticed it before. He looked away a few seconds later, then got the attention of the girl, who had been engrossed in the book in her hands the whole time.
"We've been at this for quite a while now... do you think the librarian would let us have some tea or coffee?" he asked with a smile, noticing that it was gradually getting dark outside.Come to think of it, it was already getting dark outside, and soon they would each have to head to their common rooms; having a coffee would only send her energy levels skyrocketing and keep her awake nearly all night—though for Damaris, that was nothing but pure fun, as she had done it constantly in Liverpool since childhood. Once she started drinking coffee, the habit had only intensified, so the very idea of the consequences of having a cup now actually made the prospect all the more tempting.

As Jay spoke the girl piped up, “auror? What is that?" And Jay nearly slapped herself for forgetting that this girl wouldn’t know what any of this stuff was… Jay didn’t mind explaining anything at all, she just struggled to remember that this needed explaining, she caught on pretty quickly when she was first introduced to the world of magic and didn’t ask questions she just listened.
Jay hadn’t been really introduced to magic until she was around seven or eight years old and went to Diagon Alley for the first time, but even then, Sunny didn’t use a whole bunch of magic, she even had a muggle job.
“Yeah, well that’s my bad for not explaining,” she started, trying to find a good definition for Aurors “magical police? Kinda? It the only thing I can really think of…” she trailed off, going back to looking through the book.
I’m literally going to die if I have to read more of these books
She thought bitterly, but no matter how much she hated it, Jay would continue to torture herself about this and continue reading until she found something or went insane.
"Quinn Starr, then...” the girl spoke, making Jay look up again “which books haven't you checked yet?" she asked, and Jay wordlessly pointed to the ones on her right, sadly it was the bigger pile of books but the sooner she finished them, the better. Jay quickly returned to her own book, not invested in the slightest.
Jay had gotten used to the overwhelming amount of words and names on one page. Especially when it was often a similar or even identical name for a whole page. When she first started to read them, it was dizzying for her, but after a month it got easier.
"I can check this book and keep going with the others...” the Gryffindor said as she started to read “you don't have to do it alone” Jay shrugged at that and chuckled “don’t worry,” she grinned, “I know, I’m just too stubborn to accept it so I’m trying to keep my mouth shut about this” she said, continuing to read her book.
Jay wasn’t stubborn like this about everything, but it was just particularly this that had her being hesitant to ask for help, or accept it. She mainly just asked questions if she wanted to talk to others about it, she had a few pureblood friends who she asked about a family named Starr but they didn’t know too much about it.
"By the way, I'm Damaris” the girl spoke up again and Jay nodded, looking up “ok, I’m Jay Valkyrie” she said awkwardly, she had never been the best at introducing herself but she always said her first and last name, missing out on the Arcadia that was in the middle.
Reading the book eventually became an autopilot setting for Jay as her eyes drifted up and down the page, across from her, Damaris was doing the same.
Around the library, students left and returned, some just borrowing a few books, teachers looking for reference materials and others staying in quiet corners to read books far more interesting than what Jay and Damaris were stuck reading.
She really wanted to ditch this and go read books on Medusa but something kept her rooted in her seat. Maybe it was the illusion that solving this would fix her family problems, it would make Sunny actually listen to her. But it’s only an illusion. One that Jay couldn’t quite see through just yet.
I’m glad I had a coffee before I came, otherwise I would have fallen asleep a long time ago
“We've been at this for quite a while now... do you think the librarian would let us have some tea or coffee?” Damaris asked, looking up from her book. Jay snapped out of her reading trance at the sound of her voice and stood up slowly, stretching so her shoulders and hips popped. She then walked over to a bookshelf and grabbed the first book on Greek Mythology she could find, putting it next to the other book. She could at least read it when she went up to the common room.
“Sadly, I doubt it” Jay started, looking at the cover of the book. “I have some coffee you can drink, I had way too much before I came here anyway” she shrugged, reaching into her bag and taking out her thermos, scooting it towards Damaris “help yourself” she said as she sat down on her chair.
The book was called Hekate, it was just about the goddess’s life but it was all in different forms of poetry, Jay nodded her head in approval before looking up at the windows.
It was getting darker now and Jay felt a big more awake. For some reason she always had more motivation whenever the sky was darker or it was raining, no matter how much caffeine she had.
“For Athena’s sake” she muttered “we might get kicked out soon…”
Most students were cleared out of the library now, Jay could still see a few students heading slowly towards the exit but for some reason she didn’t wish to join them.
“well fuck that” she turned to Damaris “I’m in the mood for doing stupid stuff and staying here” she shrugged.
”I’m going to stay here, read some more books, I haven’t been able to find my favourite book in here yet and I left my copy at home” she sighed, taking her ferret, Nacho, out of her bag so she could slide her book inside.
“feel free to leave if you want” Jay sighed, looking back down at the book of names, she intended to finish it before anything else.

"I'm fine here for now, but thanks" she told her—not wanting to leave her alone in the library, and knowing she wouldn't go to sleep anyway, but would just toss and turn and stay up pointlessly; this way was better—she would stay in the library until they were both made to leave.
"That sounds like an excellent plan, if I'm being totally honest" she said with a smile upon hearing the other girl's intentions. Damaris couldn't help but smile as she took the thermos offered to her; it contained coffee—something that really lifted her spirits, as it was exactly what she had been craving. She took a sip and felt her energy and social battery slowly recharging.
"Thanks" she said to Jay, watching her pull something else out of her bag. She observed with curiosity as Jay brought out a ferret to roam the tabletop; it was a surprise, but a fun one, since she rarely saw animals wandering freely around the school.
"Can I?" she asked Jay, wanting to pet the ferret. Seeing the other girl nod, she slowly and carefully reached out, letting the animal approach at its own pace so as not to pressure or scare it. When she felt it sniffing her hand, she couldn't help but laugh; it reminded her of Argos, the dog that lived in Liverpool with her father while she was at Hogwarts. The way the ferret sniffed her brought back memories of Argos as a puppy—the first time he’d met and sniffed her. She still remembered how excited he’d looked, wagging his little tail and bounding toward her as if begging to be adopted. That memory stirred up a wave of homesickness; she missed her father and grandparents dearly, but if she were being brutally honest, she missed her dog the most.
Shaking off her thoughts, she looked at Jay, who was quietly reading a book to relax and clear her mind after hours of research and study.
"What's his name?" she asked, referring to the ferret, which had decided to settle down on top of some books, using them as a makeshift bed. Noticing the book cover and recalling the girl's words from a moment ago—"For Athena’s sake"—only made her excited; she hadn't realized Jay knew about Greek mythology, too.
"Hekate, right?" she said, glancing at the book in the other girl's hands. "I haven't read it yet; is it any good?" She asked this while taking another sip from the thermos, then set it on the table between them in case Jay wanted some as well.
"I didn't know you liked Greek mythology... I hadn't realized" she said with a smile, pulling a small wooden figurine of Hades—god of the underworld and the dead, and her personal favorite whom she would defend without hesitation—out of her backpack.
"My favorite god is Hades—what about yours?" she asked with a smile, feeling less nervous than before now that she had discovered something they had in common. Smiling, she slid the wooden figure toward her, placing it near the thermos in case she wanted a closer look.
"That sounds like an excellent plan, if I'm being totally honest" she said with a smile upon hearing the other girl's intentions.
