One could try as hard as they could not to rock a boat that sat upon a water’s gentle embrace, and yet try as they might, the boat would still move. Shifting lightly under the boy’s weight as he made his way toward the front, toward her. It was enough to shift her eyes from the castle to the waters below but not yet to the boy himself. New ripples caused by him followed after the ripples she had caused, both gliding off to be joined by other disturbances. Before their ripples ultimately ceased to matter.

Just below the surface, lurking within the depths of the loch, dwelt magnificent creatures. She knew of the squid readily, as most of them did, a mostly docile, if not almost friendly, creature. It was not hard to have heard rumors of it saving the rare student who found themselves overboard. However, there were other, less forgiving creatures who called this place home. If only she could be allowed to study them, learn from them, and even learn about them directly.

That would require learning Mermish. A dreamy sigh followed the thought as the boy sat down next to her. She would remember to write this down in her ever growing list of things to bother her professors about. If the boy hadn’t wanted to have a conversation, it wouldn’t have fazed her, but as he got comfortable, it seemed he had worked up some courage, and his voice found her ears.

She waited for him to finish his question before those sapphire eyes slid from the rippling waters to his face. Solène released the edge of the boat, regarding the boy next to her. While she had remained primarily within the upper echelon in France, she had been to a smattering of pureblood get-togethers in other countries. It was always possible that they could have seen each other in the past, but if they had, she could not place his face. Then again, she was almost twelve, and while she remained polite, normal people her age had rarely been her focus.

Which house did she want to be sorted into? Where did she long to belong, or did she at all? She knew what made the most sense given her interests and hobbies, but her disposition and desire sang a different melody. While she did not believe in fate or coincidences, she did at least recognize that she had no control over who her new family would be. “From what I know of them,” a dry yet soft voice replied, lilting gently with a French accent. “Ravenclaw would likely suit my pursuit of knowledge the best. However, Slytherin would just as likely do the same. What about yourself?” She wondered what other students gleaned from an answer. Did it truly define who you were? She supposed she would find out eventually.

Everyone left the Hogwarts Express after it arrived to Hogsmeade Station. It was finally September and Maya was gonna start Hogwarts today and she was gonna be sorted into whatever house she'd belong in for the next 7 years. She was excited, also nervous, but mostly excited. She was also feeling a bit sleepy as the sky got darker and darker. She would not sleep now for sure, she was sure it will pass with another exciting adventure which was gonna happen soon. She rubbed her eyes and started gathered around with the other first years. A man had welcomed them. "Welcome to Hogwarts" he said. Skye grinned and looked at the castle across the lake. They would be crossing the lake in boats, each boat would have four people in it. The rules of what to do and not do to was understandable. When the man mentioned the creatures in the lake Maya couldn't help but feel curious. She wouldn't do anything risky though, obviously. She just wanted to see if she could see some creatures below the water while she's on the boat.

Then the path to boats were open. Maya stand back for a few seconds and paid attention to what other students were doing to decide which boat she would get in. Then quickly after she decided on Boat 3.
There was a girl there. "Hello" she said to the girl and sat down across her. "Hope you don't mind me sitting here..I am very excited right now, how about you?" She asked, waiting for a response. "Which house do you think you will be sorting into? Any preferences?"

The eyes that met his were a fascinating shade of blue, and tickled something faint in the back of his mind. He didn’t know this girl outright, but perhaps he’d seen a picture of her before, or maybe a family member of hers with the same eyes. Playing the part of high society sometimes meant studying the others participating in it, and though the sense of familiarity was as weak as lingering perfume, it lent him some small measure of comfort. One of his kind, hopefully.

"An interesting mix. Do you pursue knowledge purely for the sake of knowledge then, or is it ambition towards something more?" Since from what he could tell, Ravenclaw and Slytherin traits could lend themselves to incredibly similar pursuits with only intention to divide them. Although he didn’t put much stock in whatever House a person might end up sorted into (since, of course, things were much more complicated than simply ‘you only have this specific handful of traits’), he felt that the personal reasons behind a preference revealed deeper facets of a person.

"I hope for Slytherin to follow in my family’s footsteps, however I find it all a bit odd. Reducing people to only a couple traits - particularly when many of them can overlap - doesn’t make the most sense. I wonder if they’ve ever considered a different way of doing it, like letting students simply choose based on colour or animal. Isn’t it a bit silly to do things just because that’s how they’ve always been done, instead of trying to come up with a better way?”

Zayn was excited. After years of hearing about the legendary Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, he was here. He had counted down the days from when he received his acceptance letter, each day feeling longer than the one before. Now the wait was over and stepping down from the Hogwarts Express onto the Hogsmeade station platform, Zayn could not help but feel -- really feel -- like he was starting the next chapter of his life and what he hoped would be one hell of an adventure.

Like the others wearing plain school robes, he joined his fellow first years as a man beckoned them to gather around. "First years! First Years over here! Leave everything behind, they'll make it to your rooms in Hogwarts before you do!"

The man waited for a few more students to join them before he continued. "Welcome to Hogwarts," he said at last. "We will cross the lake in those boats. Four to a boat. Choose your boats. Once you board, you stay in the boat."

The instructions were simple enough and Zayn was already eyeing the small fleet of wooden, sizing each one up for its apparent seaworthiness (as far as his uneducated eyes could tell) and its occupants. Ultimately, he decided to let chance dictate his decision. He closed his eyes, spun around in place, and pointed. He opened his eyes.

Boat 7. The fates decided.

When he arrived at the boat and carefully lowered himself in, there were already two occupants: a pale-skinned boy with brown hair, and a girl with curly red hair. He did not recognize them but there was no time like the present to make new acquaintances, especially if they were to be spending the next seven years together.

"Hey there! Did I hear you mention Quidditch? I am more of a Tornadoes fan myself but the Maulers should have a good season," Zayn said, taking a seat in the boat and offering a friendly smile to the pair. "I'm Zayn, by the way. Zayn Al-Ashmuni. It is nice to meet you. Where are you both from?"

Kahira Valerian - clever as the devil and twice as pretty

Kahira continued to peer into the crowd, trying her best to look both intimidating enough so that randos wouldn't come join her carefully curated boat. Boats had names, didn't they? The Kahira had a lovely ring to it. In fact, such a lovely ring that it distracted her just for a moment... just enough...

Just enough for her concentration to break, and for someone to catch sight of the boat. Before Kahira could so much as give the offender one of her trademark spiteful stares, a dark-haired first-year was clambering over her like she was a Muggle jungle gym. She sputtered indignantly as they called her "curls" and stepped first on the carefully pressed folds of her pleated uniform skirt, then on her black patent-leather mary-janes, leaving matching dirt shoeprints on both locations; if she were less of a lady, she'd have shoved them into the lake right then and there. As it was, she still considered it for a moment.

The culprit settled into the opposite side of the boat from her with the coarsest, most unmannerly sigh she had ever heard from a creature her age, and even as she regarded them with a clearly disgusted curl of her lip, they offered her some sort of Quidditch badge. Kahira harrumphed heatedly, pulling an embroidered handkerchief from the inside pocket of her robes and using it to brush the dirt and stains from her shoe and skirt (it mostly came off the former, and at least somewhat from the latter), before casting a revolted glance at the proffered medallion. "It's rude to give nicknames to girls you don't know," she sniffed, "and what is that? Secondary league? Hmph! As if." These 'Maulers' wouldn't have stood a half-hour against her Tornados, anyway.

Luckily, a new boy joined the boat; though Kahira would usually have been frustrated by the presence of another person who wasn't one of her mates, this one at least entered with the proper bearing and conduct that she would expect of someone worthwhile, unlike the hideous brute with terrible taste in teams. Aaand then, just when he went and opened his fat mouth to actually reply to the muppet, just when Kahira had decided not to like him, heaven-sent words fell from his lips. I am more of a Tornadoes fan myself.

For the first time since Kahira had stepped into this dumb canoe, the ghost of a smile touched her glossed lips.

"Now that's a team worth endorsing," she said nonchalantly, crossing her legs at the ankles, but not daring to lean back even a little lest she rock the already unstable boat. She pressed a hand to her chest, speaking her name as if it should have been recognised - because, let's be honest, it was. "Valerian, Kahira Valerian. It's a pleasure to meet you, Zayn; always so lovely to know a fellow Tornadoes supporter." There was no mention of the other person in the boat, nary even a glance in their direction. It was as if stepping on her skirt had permanently erased them from mattering.

Boat 3
Elara looked up when someone spoke to her. A girl had taken a seat across from her. "Oh, hi" Elara gave her a small smile. "I don't mind at all." She shifted slightly to make herself more comfortable on the wooden seat. The girl seemed excited. Elara could hear it in the way she spoke, asking one question after another before Elara had even had the chance to answer. Elara smiled a little. "I'm excited, but a little nervous too." Her eyes moved towards the castle for a moment. It was still strange seeing it from here. She had heard about Hogwarts before, but actually sitting in a boat on the lake and waiting to cross over was something else.

The castle looked different from this distance. Elara could only make out parts of it against the dark sky, with some of its windows glowing in the distance. She wondered what it would look like once they got closer. At the question about the Sorting, Elara looked back at the girl. "Uhm, probably Hufflepuff." She hadn't spent much time trying to guess where she might end up. Hufflepuff just seemed like the one she could picture herself in. "What about you?" She looked at the girl across from her. "Do you have one in mind?"

More first years were still making their way towards the boats. Elara glanced towards the dock. Some were already talking to each other, while others stood around and watched the boats. She looked back at the girl. The other two seats were still empty. Elara wondered who would end up joining them. She glanced down at her hands before looking towards the lake again. It was still calm, and the moonlight stretched across the surface. They hadn't left yet, but it probably wouldn't be long.

Making memories that last

There was a general commotion as creatures moved and bustled, pushing and pulling against the herd as they sought to find their places with bags and trunks. Those that were elder seemed to drift towards a collection of wheeled and covered carts, drawn by strange and lovely dark creatures. Those that were akin to her age, as she followed her elder twin, were gathering around a glittering black lake, where there were several longboats. In the distance, the great and terrible bat-like structure burned with light from every window and parapet─terrible and foreboding.

That, apparently, was where they were going to be housed, and where they would learn the arts of hekse Seiðr no: "witch magic". Her blood burned at the thought of it. To be trapped in their land like this, imprisoned in the tower without open skies or wild grass. A horrible fate.

But the longboat ride across the glassy lake offered at least some feeble distraction. This was something that she was familiar with, fond of, remembered with great mirth. Great heads of Jörmungandr and Níðhǫggr that snarled at the crashing waves and screaming squalls a if to taunt the will of the sea and the giants that caused the foam to churn and froth like milk in a pail. Already, those of her own age were selecting their boats, while she was lingering behind. She was not sure where to go, necessarily, but by nature she was a creature drawn to familiarity.

And there was something familiar. The red hair and bright colours of a girl she had raced against earlier in the month. Quaint and bound by button and seam, she was a curio in the Vila's eye─yet in the creature's eye there was a notable fierceness, a pride. Something predatory despite the external failure to blend. A creature who wished to be seen as the hunter... attempting to use the bright colours of a poisonous prey-animal. A curious paradox, a confusing mingling of concealment and pomp.

She couldn't help herself, her eyes glittered at the prospect, flickering for a moment with a deep-seated gleam of gold as she considered the possibility. Yes... such a creature was worth attempting to unravel. Especially as she was joined by two other creatures. A brash one, with dark hair and pale complexion, angled features heralding something close to androgyny. The other, a simple and humble-looking male-creature, lighter hair, pale complexion with an olived undertone. Friendly, nonconfrontational. Fawn.

Bare feet would swish across the grass, the greenery springing back after she had passed as if it had never been trod upon. Delicately, she would step into the boat, lifting her gossamer white dress to avoid snagging its thin fabric on any lingering imperfections of the wood and then settling across from as many of them as she could. She wished to fix them all with glacier-blue eyes, watching the strange three, exacting their body language, the facial expressions that would always betray the spoken word, the eyes that could not conceal the soul and innermost thought. She was the smallest in the posturing among them, but the intensity of her gaze was by no means the least among them as a tiny and almost delighted smile graced her delicate features.

"Mother," I said, "Surely I am dreaming again."────────── N.S.C.

Núria's hands were shaking. Nerves, but she blamed it on the evening chill as she rubbed them against the front of her robes. She could not find it in herself to like the deep black fabric as she walked with the absurdly large group of her fellow first years, having gotten caught in the fray, pushed away from the boy she'd briefly met on the train with little complaint.

Usually, Rhea would be reminiscing. Over the past hours on the train ride, how life had brought her to this point, how she didn't need to think like that since her father wasn't there to ask— things like that. But then her mind would stray. Of to on the platform with that horrible misunderstanding. Forgotten for a moment. Only one.

A shaky breath rid the thought from her head.

Ever the follower, Rhea was stuck between shuffling kids as they were herded. Like sheep to a slaughter, or perhaps another day of grazing peaceably by a river. Yet to be decided. Núria really hoped it would be likened to the latter after the fact.

Shoes scuffling, twilight-toned robes twirling against legs, high voices tittering. Rhea felt utterly small. In a good way. A way that one mostly felt under the stars, or, more personally, when she took the time to think of how few people actually thought of her on a daily basis.

It was rather annoying, not being able to truly appreciate where she was going. The lake, from what her father knew, but the castle and everything near it was completely foreign to her.

Eventually, the kids thinned out—she had been near the front anyway— off into boats of their choosing. She counted them off in her head, getting to about seven before her vision was obscured, and she'd already made her decision. Núria made a beeline for the sixth boat she'd counted. No one else was in it yet, thankfully. And it was a decent number, all things considered. Even, close to the back of the group, perfect from the options. Ideally, there would be an eighth boat, her favourite number, but it was only a short ride. No complaints, so far.

Well. Sort of. The boat looked all too unstable. It was unfortunate that was the only way to make it to where she needed to be. Her foot made contact with the wooden bottom of the boat, mentally praying over and over that falling would be merely a figment of imagination. No matter how pretty the water might have looked, after the terse warnings given, Rhea's hand stayed firmly clasped against the side, wood digging into her palm.

The girl in front of Maya seemed friendly enough, if not a bit more guarded and introverted. Maya didn't mind it , as long as the other person was nice Maya wouldn't mind being friendly.
To Maya's question the girl said she was also excited but also a bit nervous too. To be honest Maya herself could relate. She nodded in understanding "Yeah, I am a bit nervous too , mostly excited but i guess this new beginning is also nerve-wrecking"

They both looked at the castle from the distance for a while. It was looking very..mysterious in Maya's opinion. But its mysterious-like vibe got her intrigued too. She wanted to arrive that place already, wondering how it looks from the inside. She supposed it was even better.

Then the other girl answered Maya's question about her sorting, saying its probably the Hufflepuff house. Maya hummed in response. She supposed it'd make sense based on the first impression she had about the girl. She wondered if she was shy, an opposite to Maya's personality really. Maya was more extroverted and liked to be social.

Then the girl asked the same sorting question - Maya should really call her by name by now - . She took a minute to think. Honestly she wasn't sure. "I am not really sure" she admitted out loud. "My sister and father was sorted into the Ravenclaw house during their time..but I have a feeling i might be something different" She didn't really think she'd be a ravenclaw like them, not because she didn't think that house didn't fit her, not exactly, but she felt like she had some personality differences. She said so to the girl and shrugged. "Maybe..slytherin? or gryffindor? I feel like i might be one of them." She added after a few seconds.

"I am Maya by the way, what's your name?"

Solène regarded the boy in front of her as he inquired about her pursuit of knowledge. It was a valid question, but not one an eleven-year-old could truly answer. There were things inside of her that she could not yet define, with the possibility of it changing before she ever could. “For now, it is a pure pursuit of knowledge. Knowledge gives you a sort of freedom because it allows you to pull from a well. The more you know, the deeper your well, and the more choices at your disposal.” It fell in line with the idea that knowledge is power, but what would she use that power for? Currently, her autonomy was the thing she fought for most. A beautiful cage was still a cage. “I recognize that there is an intense ambition fueling me to gain as much knowledge as I can, but I do not think that I quite have the words to define it. If any of that made sense.” She wanted power; she couldn’t quite understand why, and in place of that understanding she allowed her obsession to dictate her decisions. Which was indicated by the rambling that was starting in. It was the most the girl had probably spoken aloud in days.

As he voiced his opinion on the house system, Solène found herself agreeing with his interpretation. “Yes, exactly, like with Beauxbâtons, they never separated by house as Hogwarts does, and I heard a rumor through acquaintances that they were doing something a little different this year as well.” It was clear that she had been excited to go to Beauxbâtons, but clearly something had changed and directed her toward Hogwarts. “I read once that an American named Grace Hopper said, ‘The hardest thing in the world is to change the minds of people who keep saying, But we’ve always done it this way…If we don’t change with them, we can get hurt or lost.’ And while this was said quite a long time ago, I can’t help but agree. We must continue to evolve and adapt.” Some things in life were fine staying the same, but she couldn’t help but recognize that sometimes things needed to change. It was about advancement, not staying stagnant.

Solène did not want to dominate this conversation, and in an effort to retain her manners, she would pose a question to him in return. “Is there anything that you are passionate about? Or is there anything you are thinking about specializing in?”
