"...Rule number 13, don't talk to me.
Rule number 14, don't tell people you're my brother.
Rule number 15, refer to rules 5, 6 and 7.
Rule numb—"
"There it is!" As Hogwarts Castle came into view through the copse of trees lining the lake, Owen couldn't help but cut off his brother's droning voice with the excited exclamation.
It was beautiful. There was no shortage of castles and keeps all across the United Kingdoms in various states of repair, including a ruin not far from the Lochridge manor where they resided in Northern Ireland, but Owen had never seen anything remotely near to the grandness of what lay in wait across the lake. No description had done it justice, not even as much as Anrai had tried to play it up in grandiosity for the past two years in attempts to stir jealousy. Owen stood, stunned.
"Are you even listening to me?!"
Surprisingly strong hands connected with Owen's shoulder and jarred him abruptly from his mesmerized state. The unexpected shove sent him careening to the side. Gravel skittered as he tried to catch his balance, but he still hit the ground, knees and hands freshly smudging.
"Oy! What was that fer?" Owen whined and he hastened to stand. Feverishly trying to dust the dirt from his shorts, he bemoaned "...these were new..." just as the adult accompanying them spoke up.
"That is quite enough you two. This is no manner for Lochridges to behave." Hild's typically terse speech cut through the air like knives, a threat of punishment implicit should the rough-housing continue. "You are not plebian chattle without sense or dignity. What would your parents think?—" The commentary continued for some time as they continued on their way. And just like Anrai's incessant talking had faded to little more than background noise, so too did that of their governess.
"Rule number 16," came an indignant hiss beneath the string of Hild's verbal berating. "Stay out of my way." With that, Anrai acted as though nothing had happened, head held high as he marched forward with his oiled leather satchel slung smugly over a shoulder.
Owen scowled at him from behind, but didn't dare say anything lest he attract Hild's ire. It wasn't fair. Anrai always got the last word. It wasn't like it had been his fault. His older brother had been going on and on about this and that for so long during the journey over to the Scottish Highlands that Owen had long stopped paying attention. Why'd he have to make such a big deal about all these rules? Why did there have to be rules in the first place? What had happened to the promise he'd made to ma and da that Anrai would be looking out for his younger brother?
A stone streaked off the path courtesy of a well-placed kick from the toe of Owen's shoe—"Don't kick stones! You'll scuff your loafers!"—and drawing his attention back towards the impressive horizon where Hogwarts loomed in waiting. Like a tonic, the very sight seemed to chase away any residual negative feeling from the immediate moment. Anrai was an eejit, and Owen wasn't about to let him spoil the fun.
By the time they arrived at the campgrounds proper, Anrai was nowhere to be seen—no doubt he'd hurried on ahead to meet up with his friends—and Owen was in high spirits. This was so much better than spending the last month of summer at home, bored, counting down the days until he finally got to join his brother at Hogwarts.
Or, he was pretty sure it was better. There were so many students running around and various staff directing people to cabins or sports sign-ups that it was hard to know where to begin. Moreover, Owen found his attention persistently redirecting to the castle in the distance. With so many a tale surrounding that very structure, it suddenly became very hard to picture having to wait a whole month before being able to set foot in it. After all, it was right there...

Seven stories tall and with dungeons that crawled to unknown expanses below the surface, the castle was a marvel to behold. Owen was no stranger to castles, of course, having grown up in a manse not far from the ruins of an old castle and bailey structure. But it was just that. A ruin. And one that had long ago lost any sense of wonder or joy in its exploration. This one, however, was kept up with kitchens and house elves and secret passages and moving stairs... He remembered listening in awe the first time his brother had come home during his first year and had dreamed about setting foot in its wondrous walls every since. In particular, he couldn't wait for--
“Hello Mr. Lochridge.”
The sound of his family name slapped him back to his senses, especially the Mister part of it. His back jolted straighter; his hands dropped to his sides from wherever they'd just been fiddling with the handle strap of his trunk; and his eyes widened as he wheeled around, the castle on the horizon temporarily thrust from his thoughts. Where he expected to see his father, Mr. Lochridge, however, he found he was still very much alone amongst his blood. Featuers riddled with confusion as he turned right around again, his head swiveling in search of the stern old man. The only individual who seemed to be even remotely in his vicinity, however, was a slim girl with...remarkably striking blue-green eyes.
Owen's lips parted even as his brows rose to meet his fringe. Sun reflected the silkiness of her hair and she approached with a candor that seemed far too familiar. What was more, the closer she came, the more enraptured he became by the intensity in her eyes, they way they encompassed summer and winter, field and sky. He was loathe to look away from her, but couldn't help feel as though this were some kind of jape. Did... did he know her? Was he supposed to know who she was? Had his brother put her up to this? Was he being pranked?

Was he being pranked?
“I'm Emmeline. Emmeline Harris. Are you a first year?”
With a great deal of effort that probably appeared as though it caused him physical pain, he wrestled his gaze away from her to glance to one side. And then the other. Then back over his shoulder. Nobody else stood nearby. There could be only one conclusion, then. She was definitely talking to him. A finger lifting to point to himself in a silent question, nonetheless, as though he just couldn't accept that inevitability. Especially since it came with a sinking feeling in his stomach as though he were somehow causing some great faux-pas before the camp had even started.
"I-Uh..." He hesitated, caught off guard by the candor of her smile and the way the sun felt suddenly so very warm. "Yea," he eventually managed. "Yea, I am." Was he? Doubt slipped into his complexion. Did they count as being first year before they'd even stepped foot in Hogwarts and been sorted into one of the houses? "Or... I will be, anyway." A sheepish, close-lipped smile of his own reflected back at her. "Are you...a prefect or something?" His brother had told him all about prefects. More specifically, how Owen would never be one. This girl didn't really look old enough for that, but his brother had once bemoaned about how he had been passed over for the role in favour of brand-new students, so it wasn't like she couldn't be. Why else would she have talked to him. That must have been it, he thought. She was probably on the lookout for new arrivals. Never in a million years would it have occurred to him that perhaps she wasn't even a Hogwarts student.
"I'm Owen," he mustered with a bit more confidence now that the pieces were falling into place. "Ah!" A second or two had passed before he remembered his manners and thrust out a hand, only to catch himself before it made it halfway to her. Was he supposed to shake hands with a girl? What was worse, the movement had revealed the glint of sunshine on a palm that was very obviously too clammy for shaking. Just as quickly, he withdrew it, wiped it on the leg of his shorts, then stuffed it lamely into a pocket.
"But... uh... You already knew that, didn't you..." His thoughts trailed to a murmur. Well, this was off to a good start. He fished for some way to dig himself out of the pit he was falling into, and landed on the fact that she had obviously recognized him. "I guess you must know my family, then?" While not entirely surprised to have encountered someone familiar with the Lochridge name, it did sort of surprise him that it would happen so quickly. And that someone would be so familiar with his family as to know what their children looked like. That was when Owen gave the girl the first indication of any kind of suspicion. "Did my brother point me out? Or are you... like... some sort of stalker?"
