The Mysteries of Strangers The Lost and Found

Cabin Description

Ever been to a quiet, enchanted library? Stepping into this cabin may feel as though you're in one of them. The interior of the Mysteries cabin has a very clear colour palette in midnight blue, black, silver, and violet. Many find the common room is often in a quiet state, filled with something calming and mysterious. Large couches give a comfortable space if the residents do want to interact, but there is equally as much space dedicated to armchairs that stand by themselves and cushioned benches by windows, with pillows and blankets. The walls are lined with endless bookshelves and star charts, and floating candles cover the ceiling, much like in the Great Hall. As many of the inhabitants in this cabin are observant, intellectually gifted, introverted, and some even mysterious, the bedrooms are also kept in pairs of two to ensure that everyone feels comfortable. Each resident can choose a twin XL-sized bed with a trunk standing at the end. There is also a bedside table with space for books and an enchanted candle. Something unique that this cabin has is a curtain students may pull around their bed at night to drown out any noise or light. It’s perfect for when the common room gets loud, or if you are one who enjoys staying up reading in candlelight. The summer camp planning committee suggests midnight stargazing, puzzle nights, or silent reading hours as a bonding experience for those in the Department of Mysteries.

Why did he come to summer camp? He knew exactly why, but it had been a matter of choosing the lesser of two evils. Antoine could have chosen to stay home with his family, but the mere thought of that vanished as quickly as it came. He could certainly stand their constant belittling and high expectations, but that was not something that he really wanted to do. Alternatively, he could go to summer camp, where he would meet all manner of foolish people because the committee refused to let them reside alone. Perhaps foolish was a harsh word. He knew it was simply his frustrations getting the better of him, but whoever they were, they would certainly be better than a summer with his family, and he would never think of calling his family foolish.

It was with these thoughts that Antoine headed towards his allotted cabin. Of course, neither his father or his mother had come to see him off. They all preferred it that way. As long as the golden son was maintaining the family image, there wasn't much to talk about, was there? He finally arrived at the cabin. He had chosen the Department of Mysteries, hoping the name would attract people who were not much for conversation, but, with his luck, he'd be stuck with people playing escape room the second he walked in.

He entered and, thankfully, it was empty. That gave him a minute to examine his surroundings. The only word Antoine could come up with was "Quaint." He spoke aloud, considering there was no one here yet. Antoine dropped his trunk in the first available bedroom, thankful there were at least some nooks he could spend his time in. Unfortunately, the bedroom had another bed in it, and Antoine wasn't one for sharing. No matter, that was a problem to be dealt with later. Perhaps whoever his roommate was would keep to themselves.

Antoine strolled back into the common room, taking a walk around the common room as he examined each bookshelf carefully. The writer in him was joyous, but the boy would certainly not let that show. However, there was a glimmer of interest in his eyes as he scanned one title and the next, picking up a book, thumbing through it, putting it back, and then repeating the process all over again. It was so infatuating it almost made him forget the predicament he was in. Almost.

Soon, this room would be full, and he wouldn't be on his own, happy in the company of books. Instead, he would have to entertain the few companions who insisted on this very same cabin. Perhaps it was Antoine's social training that made him feel this way, but he felt responsible already for his roommates, whoever they may be. Antoine felt like the host at a gathering, and knowing his duties as a host was something he could very well do. Although, perhaps claiming this space was not the smartest thing to do just yet.

Elodie was trying not to think about the fact that she’s never done this before. Not summer camp per se, although that part was also true. She’s never been away from her family for this long. Visits to relatives don’t count when one of her parents was usually around and neither did the occasional night spent with her grandparents. Her trunk was packed by her mom and inspected once by her dad, but once they’re out of her room, she unpacked some items she thought she wouldn’t need.

Her mom was obviously more excited about the entire thing than her. “It’ll be good for you, Dove.” Things adults tend to say when they’ve already decided something would happen whether you like it or not. Her father on the other hand, was more useful. He reminded her to write, told her not to check anything explicitly marked dangerous, and then changed that to don’t check anything you’re specifically told not to check. She was assuming her dad remembered who he was speaking to. The conversation lasted longer than it should have, as always. Now they were gone, and she was here alone.

Well, technically not alone and that’s where the problem was. There were bunch of kids her age everywhere. Being around people was not uncomfortable for her. She knew how to introduce herself properly and how to make decent conversation. What she was not used to was how anyone was expected to do those things when there were so many people doing them at once. Her lessons were silent and peaceful because it’s just her and her tutor. There’s the case with cousins visit, but even then there’s never been this many kids her own age gathered in one place. She would be attending Beauxbatons soon, perhaps this was a good place to start.

Elodie eventually found the cabin assignments and she saw her name in Department of Mysteries cabin. Her eyebrows rose. Of all the possible cabin assignments, she ended up in one that involved mysteries. After all, it was one of her favorite things to deal with. She checked the other names and as expected, they’re all stranger to her, but she did commit some names to memory. Being homeschooled meant there were not that many kids she would recognise in the first place. But the cabin assigned to her looked to be promising. But then her dad’s voice popped into her head, If you are specifically told not to touch something, Elodie, there is usually a reason. Rolling her eyes, she entered the cabin once she found it.

The first thing she noticed was the color and the ambiance. It was like an enchanted library because of the bookshelves lining the walls, there were also star charts in between them, and candles floating above. Her gaze travelled around the room as if taking inventory. Whoever designed this place understood that sharing a cabin did not require sharing every thought that entered one’s head. She finally noticed the boy inside. And here she thought she was the first. The boy was occupied with a book, so considered finding her bedroom first but that would be rude. Her parents raised her better than that. “Hello there.” Her Irish accent was noticeable. “I’m Elodie van Aelst.” She offered a polite smile, “I suppose we’re in the same cabin.”

Lour was too reasonable to argue that warm August. Unlike their insistence in the futility of Houses, summer camp offered a breath of purpose to their six departments. Magical Transportation, Law Enforcement, the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures— each offered its own valuable scope of knowledge under the Ministry. That late summer provided a new issue when Lourine's interest spills along the veins of every subject like a heart pours blood in every direction. Managing one selection was an impossible ask; The Department of Mysteries was a matter of rolling dice.

Their luggage trails up the walkway to the cabin they'd spend a full month in, a fate they chose willfully. There was no question in spending the summer alongside the flock of people and information the camp sought to offer. After the self-imposed exile of their first year, the young wix was starting to feel like these magical events were finally worth showing up for.

They test the lock on the door, entering with just as little fanfare as the ones before them. Two others were in the idle space of the living room— Lour recognized neither. They roll their suitcase against the velvet edge of a couch, avoiding claim to any area, but still keeping away from the path down seating arrangements and warm wood shelving. Their gaze wanders the campers more than the room, like they were trying to place the two.

The first loitered by the bookshelves, taking the opportunity to comb titles just ahead of the rush of first day excitement and introductions that already kicked up. It was too early to tell whether he preferred the company of books or merely waited for the others. The second already voiced her name with an accent they couldn't fully register. She carried not much further than pale jeans and the mannerly, unremarkable tone of meeting someone new. So— the strangers didn't know each other either, Lourine was wordlessly assured by that.

They were proper enough to leave the pair uninterrupted, allowing their attention to wander along the room's soft edges, built for the quiet bookish reader and the vast solitude of space and the stars. Lour sought hushed late-night conversations and group sleepovers under bookshelves, they wondered if the quiet atmosphere and their new roommates would leave space for it.

Violet furniture and gold fastenings discriminated against the swampy tiger stripes that spiraled up their clothing. Yet even as they were full of shoulder pads and knuckled gloves, they handled all the bulk with the gentle feline touch the library required. They stretch upward to touch the candles floating overhead, but their fingers grasp nothing, they were far too high for the twelve-year-old to reach.
