There exists a time to rest and recuperate. It was likely such a time to do so after she had been blown backward by her own spell — her back now hurt, the texture of the piste having made the fall more uncomfortable than it should have been. She could feel the effects of the Impediment Jinx wearing upon her like a stone, the spell augmentingly slowing her movements. First it was the wand waving, which affected her ability to control the direction of the spell; then followed her footwork, the usually light, evasive footsteps becoming heavy, as though laden in cement.

Deciding now to cast the General Counter-spell upon herself to mitigate those effects, an incantation of “finite incantatem” sounded. She felt almost instantly lightened, movements yet again fluid and flexible. In that moment she was a feather — drifting, almost untethered, liberated from the chains that were impedimenta.

The sound of clapping emanated from the sidelines, along with Lily’s shouts of encouragement. The calls were not very much invigorating — more so distracting, in fact — but Ebony flexed her fingers and readied herself to cast again nonetheless, determined not to allow the spell to explode into her own face yet again.
