The Perfect Spot Finished

It had been two months since Eyre had started at Hogwarts, and he could feel himself blooming into a different person every day. More and more he felt comfortable walking around, especially in the early Autumn weekend mornings when the fog rose up above the Scottish mountains and the grounds were quiet. Everyone else liked to sleep in, but Eyre enjoyed getting out into the fresh air to enjoy a quiet place where he could relax in the mid-morning sun without having to worry about anyone bothering him.

Eyre left his dorm at a quarter past 8, dressed in his warmest black hooded jacket and red poofball hat. He didn't know if it was going to rain that day, but he wanted to be certain that he wouldn't get too cold. Chilly Scottish mornings had their own bite, and he'd hate to get caught in a bout of unexpected rain. Before he left he had stashed away his treats for his leisure time outside in his large coat pockets, and with that he departed on his way to the Grounds.

He had his fair share of time to scope out the perfect place to sit in the past two months that he had been there, and the place that he had chosen was a green patch of grass that was near the edge of the forest, which pressed against a piece of castle wall. A gargoyle hung overhead, giving some cover and made it feel much more cozy than sitting in the middle of the courtyard, or somewhere more exposed.

Once he reached his special place, he was surprised to see a girl sitting there. She was working on some sort of drawing, and her long black hair covered most of her face from view. It was clear that she had been there for longer than an hour, and had no intentions of leaving. Eyre couldn't help but feel almost territorial. How could she have sleuthed this spot out? He thought he was the only one who knew about this place!

Before he could get irrationally upset, he stopped himself and took a deep breath. It wasn't that big of a deal, he could find somewhere else to sit. Unfortunately for him, he noticed that his presence had gotten her attention. She looked up at him with one green eye, the other masked by her hair.

"Hey uh... Can I sit here, too?" He said, biting back his nerves. If he had any chance of making more friends here, he was going to have to be social, somehow.

Tallis had been drawing for sometime now, sitting against a wall of the castle. She had just recently found the spot she was sitting in and enjoyed how quiet it was. It was chilly today and so she wore her usual dark grey shirt with a collar and her favorite dark purple overall dress, this time though she also wore a black sweater that her father had gotten her before coming to the school.

She had been drawing a rose while sitting and was getting close to finishing it when she heard something or someone walking towards her. She looked up to see a boy looking down at her and, from the looks of it, was a first year like her. He just kinda looked at her for a minute and she was getting nervous. He eventually said, "Hey uh... Can I sit here, too?"

Tallis wasn't expecting him to ask that, usually people didn't want to be anywhere near her so this was unusual. "Um...," She started, extremely nervous and curious and the same time,"Y..Yeah sure, if you wa...want to."she answered him. Tallis wasn't really sure what to do next, she had never been the best at socializing, so she just sat there and watched him.

"Y..Yeah sure, if you wa...want to." The girl said, seemingly flustered.

There was something about her answer that wasn't off-putting to him, but comforting. He'd already met his fair share of overconfident wizards, so to find someone who was similar to him was a relief.

Eyre cleared his throat. He unzipped his jacket and laid it gently on the ground next to her, sitting down cross legged on the soft padded material. He was a bit close to her, almost as if they were friends and not complete strangers, but he didn't make an effort to scoot away in fear that she could tell how awkward he was.

Once he was situated, he pulled his intended leisure materials out of his pockets. One was a hilarious witchcraft-inspired Muggle comic book that he had gotten in London, Muggles really had the wizarding world all wrong, and the other was his most prized possession at the moment: a delicious pumpkin pasty that he had swiped from the Halloween Dinner the night before.

Eyre unwrapped it from it's parchment, practically drooling at the sight of it. He almost bit into it until he realized that the girl was staring at him. He turned his head to look at her, face flushing.

"...Do you want a piece? I got it from the Great Hall last night." Eyre said, his fingers trembling around the baked sweet.

She continued to stare at him, her expression curious. Without skipping a beat, he broke it half, some crumbs falling out onto his jacket. He outstretched his hand towards her, hoping that she'd take it.

"Here..."

Eyre was happy that she'd accepted the treat, he would've felt a lot more uncomfortable if she hadn't. As more crumbs fell from the pasty onto the grass near her sketchbook, he took a look at the rose that she had drawn there. It was a very nice drawing, a lot better than he could ever do. When he realized that his staring was too obvious, he spoke up.

"I... like your drawing. Do you come here to draw often, when I'm not here?" He asked her, his heart pounding from nervousness. Focus, Eyre, he thought to himself. She seems nice, there is nothing to be nervous about.. He took a small breath before he spoke again, this time with more ease.

"Honestly, I didn't know that anyone else knew about this spot other than me. It sort of...surprised me.. to see you here." Eyre said, before turning away for a moment in awkward silence. He picked up his book, unsure of what to do, and started to mindlessly thumb through the pages in an attempt to calm himself. Once he noticed that she was done with her pasty and his nerves were soothed, he spoke again, outstretching his hand.

"I'm Eyre Reeves, by the way. What's your name?" He asked, a nervous smile on his lips.

She waited a bit before she spoke. "M...My name is Tallis Oblidge." The girl finally said in a quivering voice. Eyre was quick to drop his hand when he noticed that she didn't seem to want to shake it- he figured that just his presence alone was probably overwhelming as is.

"I...I just found this spot not long ago, and when I do come, yes I draw..." Tallis sputtered. Eyre could swear that she was vibrating silently as she spoke, as if she were a scared rabbit. "I...I hope I don't bother y...you, I can le...leave if you w...want me to."

Eyre shook his head, his brows furrowed in surprise at the suggestion. "No! You don't have to, I mean.. You're the one who was here first. I'm the one that should be leaving." He said, standing up as if he were about to be on his way.

He then stopped himself, realizing how silly he was sounding. If she didn't want him to leave, he should feel no obligation to leave. He turned around to face her, crossing his arms for comfort as a strong breeze blew past him, soothing his flushed face and neck.

"I mean.. If you want me to. If you don't want company, that is. I know I'm a stranger, and this is super weird, but... I don't mind it if you don't." He insisted. Eyre was almost certain that Tallis was probably just pushing him away because she was anxious, too, and he didn't want to make it worse if she truly didn't want him there.

"I don't mind if you stay,b..but only if you w...want to. I..It was kinda n...nice having company... f...for once." Tallis said to him, before averting her eyes to the ground. Although she couldn't see it, her invitation to stay made him smile, as he sat back down on the ground with her.

"Right... Cool... I'll stay here and read my book, then, while you draw." He said, picking up his comic book and readjusting himself on his jacket so they could sit together with a reasonable space between them. He started to read his comic book with Tallis drawing by his side. Something about this was comfortable to him. He didn't feel obligated to say anything, he just enjoyed the company of his new unlikely friend.

Once in awhile he'd chuckle out loud, or he'd glance over to see what Tallis was drawing next, but they didn't say much to each other at all. They were sitting there for so long that eventually he had finished the book all together, closing the cover with a satisfying thump.

"Well, I'm done reading my book...." He said as he looked over to her, a tiny smile peeking out over the corners of his lips. "Are you going to stay here and draw some more, Tallis? It's almost twelve."

He had sat back down soon after she had told him it was ok. He read his comic and she drew in her sketchbook, it was... nice. She would hear him chuckle while reading his comic and occasionally catch him sneaking a glance at her sketchbook and, for the first time, she really didn't mind. She was having such a nice time that she didn't notice how long the two of them had been out there. She heard Eyre close his comic with a thump and looked over to see him looking at her, a slight smile on his face as he said, "Well, I'm done reading my book...." he paused and then continued, Are you going to stay here and draw some more, Tallis? It's almost twelve."

Tallis's eyes widened slightly, she hadn't realized how long they had been there. I...I probably should go study some, I d...didn't realize how long we'd been here." She told him, carefully closing her sketchbook. This had been... nice, it was so unusual, but nice. "Th..Thank you for sitting w...with me Eyre," She told him quietly, quickly looking away and at the ground. She shouldn't have said that, why did she say that, why was she so weird. She wasn't sure if he would respond or just stay quiet, she wasn't sure what would be better.

As soon as Eyre had suggested it, he was met with an unexpected smile. Eyre wasn't sure if Tallis' smile was exceptionally nice, or if it was nicer than usual because she seemed to be the kind of person who didn't give them out very often.

"Th...That would be... nice," She stuttered as she rose from the ground, picking up her sketchbook and brushing crumbs off of her overalls. " So...Sun...Sundays right?" She asked. Again, she looked away from him as if she was nervous about what he was about to say. Eyre couldn't help but wonder why she was so intimidated by him. He wondered if she was used to feeling neglected by others, too.

"Sundays it is." Eyre told her, meeting her gaze with a warm smile. He wanted her to know that there was nothing to fear, and that he was someone that she could trust. After all, if she was anything like him, he was certain that being able to be comfortable around other people must be important to her, too.

As they parted ways, Eyre couldn't help but feel thankful that he had faced his fear of meeting a new friend. Even though he didn't mind having his alone time, at least he had something to look forward to on his chilly Autumn mornings.
