The Howls of an OWL prepper PV:Edward Foxe

Marietta knew that the OWLs weren't for a while, but that didn't change the fact that she was as dead as a gnome in a cage full of Jarveys. She had always gotten a large number Ps and Ds in every subject that wasn't Care of Magical Creatures and Herbology. With the exception of a few A's in Potions, though that was just because those times she let somebody else stir. She never could remember how many times she had stirred or which direction was clockwise and which one was counterclockwise. The worst ones was when you had to swap directions after a certain number of times.

It was horrid, and then Marietta could feel the disgust radiating off the professor when she screwed the potion up. Though her grandmother claimed that was just her imagination and that Marietta's potions professor had probably seen everything from students losing any and all hair, to dissolved fingers. Which made a few boiled over pots and minor explosions nothing. In her grandma's eyes anyway. While Marietta agreed she hadn't messed up that bad, yet, that didn't make her feel any less bad about when her potions did explode or boil over.

She rubbed her eyes. How had she gotten from doing a astrology practice test to thinking about how bad she was at potions?! Gah! Marietta began writing down the second to last answer. The practice test was simple enough, it had a picture of zodiac constellation on one side, and a spot for name, alignment, and description on the other. She had little hope remembering the different kinds of suns and planets. But she was okay with names and stories, so she was hoping that if she mastered remembering the Zodiac constellations and all the information attached to them, her Astrology OWL might not be so dreadful.

After she finished writing she re-read her answers, making sure she had all the punctation right. She knew if she had forgotten to add something, she probably wouldn't spot it now, but it was a good test taking habit. So she made sure to enforce it on these practice tests, no matter how useless it felt. After she was sure everything was fine, she open up her astrology book and started going through the constellations. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong... Marietta moaned, letting her head drop into the book. She knew that was inconsiderate to the others studying- but it was hard not to express her frusteration in some way!

The only thing she had gotten right was gemini and some of the Zodiac's alignments. Gemini was easy because it actually looked like two people. Everything else looked like something else, or was too similar. Like how Leo looked more like a Ram than Aries, and both Virgo and Libra were vaguely person shaped. Oh wait- she had named Sagittarius and Cancer correctly. Even though she felt those to had similar shapes she remembered that cancer, like the name, was simple, and Sagittarius, like the name, was all squiggly and complicated.

At this point she was pretty sure she was going to flunk out of Hogwarts and be forced to return to the magic-less, wonderless world of muggles for a job.

The first month of the new school year had already passed and Edward was already feeling behind on studies. During the summer he had not been able to get much reading done. First he was home with his family and his little sister kept him very busy. Edward smiled thinking back to those happy moments with her. Then, his parents tricked him into attending summer camp and while the cabin had been well-suited for studying and the available books were decent material, it had still been busy and he indeed had been attending activities.

But now his fifth year had started and of course he had been taking all the courses that he could, although he already regretted taking divination, herbology and care of magical creatures. He felt like divination was a hoax, herbology was dirty and most creatures scared him. And for the rest of classes, it was just a lot of content. They were learning new spells, harder potions and the wealth of knowledge, though interesting, was just overwhelming. And they got a lot of homework to do. Edward sighed. He liked reading and learning but the sheer flood of things also brought him to an edge. And it was only October.

So, he spent most of his time in the library when not attending classes. For now, he was studying alone. He was thinking about putting up some flyers to build study groups or partners or even tutoring younger students but so far did not take the time to do so. And he also wasn't quite sure whether it would even benefit or hinder him but it could be a way to convince his parents that he was trying to socialise, while actually still following his own aim of getting OWLs in all the subjects that Hogwarts was offering.

He surely was not the only person in the library though but luckily it was generally quiet. At least until he heard a loud moan from a table close to him and when Edward looked up he saw the girl dropping her head into the book. She seemed about his age, so maybe also studying for her OWLs or at least doing homework. Edward tried to identify the subject and noticed the dots and lines that resembled stars and constellations. Astronomy had always been among his favourite subjects, partially because it involved having classes at night and looking at the night sky was really amazing. Having enough of the charms he had been studying in the past hour, he took a deep breath and with the intention to maybe offer help, he asked: "Are you okay?"
