Careless Wanderings

The third year slipped out of the classroom after the spoken part was finished, having no interest in sharing a space with so many other students for such a long period of time. He had his note, he had his homework, that was all he needed. Frankly, he worked better alone, when his skin wasn't crawling with all the hypothetical stares of the other students.

Muttering lowly to himself in his mother tongue, he stalked through the corridors, glaring daggers at any painting that watched him. He wasn't keen on the 'living' pictures. In fact he despised them. The temptation he had to simply burn the ones on the walls of his foster parents' home was tangible whenever he passed them. The boy was the type to avoid the gaze of others, yet here he was, unable to escape them just because the wizards wanted fancy paintings that could talk to them.

The luxury of wizards never ceased to irk him whenever he thought about it. Not only that, but he was now part of their society, so he couldn't exactly ignore it in favor of his 'muggle' ways very much. After all, people got more pissy when he punches someone in the face then they do when some dolt waves a stick around and makes someone vomit up slugs. The double standard was blatant. Objectively, blocking someone's airways with slugs was more dangerous then a black eye.

Huffing, he turned down a hall before pausing and glancing around. This wasn't a familiar, he realized. He hadn't been here before, and he hadn't been paying attention to where he was walking. Blinking, he spun around in a slow circle, trying to catch sight of anything familiar. He soon realized that he found nothing of the sort, and frowned softly. Well, if he kept wandering he was sure to find his way back to somewhere he recognized. So with a shrug, he slipped his hands into his pockets and started walking again, bookbag bumping against his hip with every stride.

The ongoing classes on the second floor made it so its corridors had some sorely needed breathing room, but even so, Lourine's gait wasn't much quicker than when wix were packed into hallways like a can of sardines.

They idled at the tail-end of the hall where portraits would chatter on despite enduring an equal routine year after year. Countless days in lamplit corridors with old faces and new students; even now they accepted their undeniable presence within Hogwarts' walls, however stifling. In return they held great canvases and meticulous brush strokes; they would keep their vision and voices, and visits from the occasional staff or student just as Lourine would observe them in a morbid curiosity. It was a preservation post-death that only the magical could afford.

How unfair.

❝ I'll be going, ❞ Their conversationalists had no means to see them off. ❝ It was nice talking to you. ❞

They quicken to a comfortable pace when they depart, a hand pulling their duffle strap further in the nook of their shoulder. Offering only a nod in greeting to the quieter, framed subjects, a stranger in their peripheral seized the chance for their attention instead.

He scans the room rather conspicuously, in the telltale arc of someone searching for something recognizable. As they slow to regard him, so does he. With a roll of his shoulders, it seemed he accepted he wouldn't find what he was seeking.

It takes not even a moment for Lourine to consider, maybe they could find it for him.

❝ Are you looking for something? ❞

He had heard someone talking down the hall, but hadn't paid them much mind, especially since they soon seemed to stop talking, as if he'd simply caught the tail-end of a conversation. He had ignored it, of course, he hardly had any interest in interacting with someone, even if he was technically lost. No, the less people that knew he existed, the better, especially in a bizarre place like this full of likely hundreds if not thousands of secrets that the walls had bore witness to.

No thank you.

Unfortunately it seemed like he wouldn't get much of a choice.

He paused as he heard footsteps growing closer, his muscles tensing instinctively as his cold silver eyes narrowed. Soon enough he turned around to face them before they had even spoken. His glare was coldly wary, though not entirely hostile-yet. Frankly his demeanor wasn't dissimilar to a street cat about to hiss at someone for getting too close. Looking them up and down, he huffed softly. Seemed they were a first-year. Still, he didn't grow any less wary upon having that realization it seemed.

"Just lost track of where I was wandering," he grunted as he stared at them, the Russian accent heavy on his words.

Watching the third year was like watching a stray keep tabs on a stranger, by the time they spoke, his gray eyes had already been scrutinizing them. Despite Lourine having done nothing hostile, in fact they were rather harmless by then, the other student guarded himself the moment they were only a few meters apart. For some reason, he didn't trust their proximity.

Their amber eyes narrows like his, yet as he— begrudgingly— humors the question they'd halt to speak with him. And when he even answers, Lour's gaze eases enough to look across the corridor from where he first appeared.

❝ where would you like to be? ❞

Their tone whittles down into something less gentle, since he'd done it first, but their sentiment was genuine. Lourine Hoax fumbled the past year; they barely knew classrooms from one another or recognized the stretch of tables at the Great Hall. They hadn't memorized portraits or faces, and it pared them down into empty shapes in the edges of their vision and strains of space to go missing in. It was disorienting, being lost. They weren't fond of it.

So they remembered things when autumn rolled around again, they mapped out routines in their mind like they were always promising at, they made room to remember the faces on wix and talk to canvases on the walls. After all, it's why they bothered to pay this hall any mind, or the student that they idled for; Hogwarts was no longer an exception to their level of consideration. It made them knowledgeable help and, in their well informed opinion, less of an annoyance than he assumed so quickly. They could keep their distance just fine if he wanted, but not without offering a truce first.

He paused as he heard the question, scratching absently at his jaw where the scar was. "Good question," he hummed, before sighing lightly. He certainly had no interest in going back to class. He didn't need to stay in a room full of people just to do his homework that he could do in the Gryffindor common room or library. Speaking of Gryffindor... "Gryffindor tower I suppose?"

He didn't have any particular interest in going anywhere else after all. Looking back at her as she offered to show him the way, he tilted his head. "Why are you wandering around? Waiting to find lost students or something?" He huffed idly, tone not particularly accusing but not friendly either. They were wandering around during class hours too, did they also dislike staying in classrooms to work? Shoving his hand back in the pocket. Watching their actions as he waited for the response, he finally let his gaze wander the area again, eyes narrowing a tad as his attention landed on a painting. The fact that they could watch him made his skin crawl, he always preferred the frames being empty of anyone.
