It had been a while since Fawkes had decided to mod a duel. She was so used to participating in them that she had almost forgotten what it was like being on the other side of the piste. She couldn't let her skills get rusty though, being duelling captain and all. It had been... around 4 months? since her last duel moderation. Honestly she had no idea why she didn't do it more often, it was fun!

As she looked over at the people participating, she pondered for a second, debating as whether or not to introduce the duellists to each other before deciding that they could figure it out on their own. Surely they were smart enough to do that right?

Anyways she took a breath and began to recite the rules she had engrained in her mind like a parrot. You may only use spells, no physical attacks for the duel. No friendly fire, no illegal/unapproved spells and no potions. she droned on. She then looked up at the two teams. Well then, now that I have informed you all of the rules please take your stances to begin the duel. Fawkes looked up cheerily as she said that.

Ready? Set. GO!

𝕯ueling. Finally. It was just the first month of school and he had some practice in the summer, but Robin still felt like it was a long time since he actually stood in the club room. It was true, really, dueling in this particular room was an entirely different feeling than firing spells at each other in a forest clearing. It was more formal, and it made Robin more competitive.

He signed up for this duel quite some time before, towards the end of the last semester. It was something he put in the back of his mind yet simultaneously anticipated the arrival of. Fawkes Chaos was their moderator, a Ravenclaw dueling captain only the same age as himself. Robin sometimes thought to himself how that even happened, do seniors not want to be captains? Or was she just too talented to be denied the position? As someone looking forward to being a part of his House's dueling team, Robin never actually saw his captain duel. He recalls informal games, but not one of those big ones towards the end of a season—he often skipped those because of time conflicts with his preferred study time.

As he walked into the dueling club room, he saw his team members and opponents. Nobody on the opposing team seemed familiar, and he only recognizes one of his teammates—Nick Jameson. Robin remembered his first impression of his roommate, someone so studious that they're already doing practice tests for NEWTs. Or was it OWLs, maybe, he can't pinpoint the exact test, but it was one of those big ones. Robin also thinks of himself as studious, but he prefers to prepare for those exams specifically when the time is nearer. In the mean time, reading academic journals and novels can also do the trick of learning. And if he's going to study then anyway, might as well use now to do other stuff.

His other teammate looked a bit sinister. Well she "looked" fine, she just has this eerie atmosphere brewing up around her, a terrible presence emanating from her very being. On the opposite side of the room, there's a girl in the opposing team who served as the antithesis, a doll-like figure with long blonde hair draping down her back like a golden waterfall. Objectively pretty, Robin concluded indifferently. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and even though many might think she's the loveliest creature on Earth, Robin can already think of a few of his acquaintances—friends, actually—who are even more so in his own eyes. Especially . . .

The tip of Robin's ears were painted with a splash of red. He didn't realize it at first, but after he did, the boy forced himself to clear his mind. It's dueling time, and he should discuss strategies with his team members before time's up. Thoughts on a certain smart and nice and pretty girl can wait. Or preferably just never come back at all, whatever that was.

A few minutes passed and Fawkes Chaos finally announced the rules and instructed them to ready their wands. Robin moved around his wrist and recited all the incantations and wand movements of spells he discussed with his teammates in his head. He is as ready as he can ever be, so let the game begin!

Poppy...missed being back at school.

It was almost surreal walking onto the duelling block after being away for so long. For a moment she found that the only thing she wanted to do was stare at the walls and reacquaint herself with the worn feel of the ground beneath her. When she'd first gotten her Hogwarts letter, the entire fuss had been about suddenly immersing herself in a world of magic that she'd previously thought to not exist. It was about suddenly catching up across a wide knowledge gap in comparison to her peers who were born into magical families.

With that came a lot of looking inward and grappling with the things she'd been taught in her own home. While she wouldn't say that she'd left her first year conquering all her demons, she could say that she'd come far enough to feel the opposite effect the moment she'd been sent home.

Don't get her wrong, it had been nice being back on the farm. A lot had changed in the time she was away and many of the animals had given birth. But things were also...different.

Real different.

Her parents had steadily cooled on her over the course of the year, but the most notable changes appeared among her siblings. It made things at home tense and left the girl unsure of where she really fit. Not with her older sisters, who pretended she no longer existed. Not with Thorne who seemed almost...angry with her, though she couldn't understand why. While her younger siblings Jasper and Sera didn't seem nearly so put out by her presence, they were noticeably more hesitant around her than before she'd ever left.

Stepping into the opening feast was the first breath Poppy realised she'd taken since getting off the Hogwarts Express in June.

At least here, she knew what house she belonged to. She had friends who'd smiled to see her and her wand – Merlin. It had been so long since she'd felt the warm wood nestle into her palm. It was strange to think that returning to the world she'd been taught to shun was the very place that made her feel like she was home. It was a hard feeling to reconcile, and for the first weeks, she chose not to. Instead, Poppy sought to immerse herself in activities as she'd begun to do before the end of her first year. One such activity was a duelling match.

Now that she'd made the team – a wonder in and of itself – it gave her more reason to practise her spellwork and her skill. She hadn't hesitated the moment she saw the notice Fawkes had put out, welcoming the chance to throw around a few spells and forget the things for an afternoon.

Poppy glanced briefly at their opponents, not nearly as intimidated as she certainly would've been even a few months ago. A sign of growth or a desperation to be active, it was hard to say but she turned her attention next to her teammates.

"I...I think this is the part where we – I dunno – promise each other to give them hell?"

It...that happened sometimes...didn't it?

Ophelia had been back at school for less than a month, and already she was participating in an unofficial duel; her first unofficial duel. She was nervous, kind of. The raven hadn't given duelling as much thought as she'd given Quidditch, hence her participation in a lot of unofficial Quidditch matches the year prior, but she was also somewhat excited to see how well... or bad she'd do in this duel.

It was a 3v3, and she was glad to see a familiar face; none that she'd interacted with, more seen around in the common room. Persephone Grimsbane. Ophelia waved and smiled at the girl as she walked toward her and a Hufflepuff. "Hey," she greeted both her teammates, "I mean, we could promise each other that. And that we hopefully don't die. We'll do great, I'm sure," she joked, although she wasn't sure if her humor was appreciated or not, sand ince she didn't want to accidentally jinx the group; she knocked on the wall with her knuckles three times; a common Persian superstition that was a cultural fear of the "Evil Eye", something she had no opinion on but still didn't want to trigger just in case.

"First duel ever, I hope I come out alive," she muttered to herself as she walked into position, taking out her wand, "here we go."

## Sept. 2025xxx
The Duelling Club, Hogwarts Castle
xxx

xxxScarcely a month had gone by when Ellaine found herself within the walls of the Duelling Club. That in itself was not a strange occurence, as in her first year she’d spectated a few of the matches here and there. This one, though, was a notable outlier. Standing on the duelling strip, preparing for a three-on-three match… Needless to say, this was not how her usual visits went. It was a good thing, she supposed, that all of them were of the same year. Certainly a nice way to ease into duelling, disregarding whether they lost or won the game.

Gently easing herself from the thoughts, Ellaine started to decipher her eyes’ wanderings. Of the six others in the room, she was unsurprised to have recognised only one of them – the duel’s moderator, Fawkes Chaos, from the notices sent out, as well as from the distantly-remembered questionnaire some months ago. The opposing team across her had two Ravenclaws, both of them looking unassuming, to be frank. Instead, her gaze darted towards the girl, yet… A foreboding feeling came over her, and she couldn’t help but feel uneasy. She tried to keep the frown off her face, but she doubted its success.

Instead, Ellaine turned to look at her own team. A brunette and a blonde, though it seemed that they recognised each other, possibly because of their shared House. It was a shame, she thought, that she did not have their names. They seemed to be quite nice and friendly.

“Hello, too,” she said, the smile on her face briefly widening. “We’ll have to do our best, then, to ‘give them hell’ – so long as we are still intact by the end of it, of course.” Hoping that her next words were on the correct course, she added, “I’m Ellaine Weatherby. Nice to meet you.”
