Millicent walked around the lake, surveying its inhabitants and gazing all throughout. The purple sky illuminated her vision to that of a cat's, showing her the wonders of the landscape. There were trees in the distance that swayed gently in response to the wind, rocky outcroppings that were sooth or rough depending on how close to the water they stood, mountains that stood tall in the distance, challenging any foe to stand them down or face their strength.

And the lake itself!

All this wonder, though, came with a sense of foreboding and anxiety for Millicent. She shivered as she walked around the lake, pulling her hat closer to her eyes and her robes around herself. She knew this place was full of magic-and probably magical creatures-and she was excited to meet them all, but she also felt anxiety about that. What if they weren't friendly? She hadn't exactly started classes yet and to say she was uneducated about the magical world was, in her opinion, the understatement of the century. Or centuries now.

She decided to take things one step at a time, literally, as she walked along the rocky outcroppings and stared out into the lake. One day, she thought, I'll understand this.

@Millicent Barnes.

It was right at the beginning of the school year, and I decided to take a walk outside by the lake. It really was stunning. I felt sorry for the people I had grown up with, who would never get to see the castle. But, again, I was glad. Hogwarts had been a fresh start for me when I was a first year, and it was going to be one again this year, taking new lessons, after finding out what had been happing at home for all of last year.
I sat down by the lake, tempted to dip a finger into it, but having heard far too many overexaggerated stories making me unsure what the giant squid was actually like. But, I still sat there, looking across the lake, until I heard someone coming.
I turned my head, seeing someone walking past. They seemed quite young compared to me, so probably a new first year. She was looking out across the lake.
I stood up, and carefully walked a bit closer to her.
"Hello."
I was a few meters away from her, but still speaking quite quietly, as normal.
"Are you a first year? I'm Mira, in the third year."
I looked back out across the lake, following her line of sight.
"It's so beautiful here."

Millicent startled a little bit, seeing her companion, Mira, sneak up on her like that. She internally scolded herself; she really needed to keep a closer eye out. She was at Hogwarts now and couldn't afford to let her guard down, even among fellow students.

"Hi, yes, I am," she answered, willing her voice to calm itself. This is a third year, Mill, don't embarrass yourself. "What house are you? I-I'm Hufflepuff."

Millicent decided to gaze at the lake again, feeling the droplets of rain soak into her hair and her robes and wondering if there were any good spots to learn new things or to spot new, magical creatures. From the minute she learned they existed, she'd been eager to learn about them, care for them and study them, as much as she possibly could.

Perhaps I'm too ambitious for a first year, she reflected, but at least I have an idea of what I want to do after school.

"What do you want to do after Hogwarts?" Millicent inquired and immediately, quietly cursed herself. She was supposed to be guarded with her fellow students, not opening her heart to them!

Though she supposed she couldn't help it. She'd always been social and now that she learned there were others out there with magic-not to mention the fact that she couldn't believe magic existed in the first place-she wanted to meet a lot of them.
