A new year at Hogwarts…
It was strange to think that it was my third year at the magical school. All the new first years looked so young! It was about an hour before curfew, and it was already dark outside, making me shiver. But, I had decided on a plan. After dinner, I picked up my bag, and put on my warm purple coat, not bothering to change out of my uniform, and I climbed up to the top of the astronomy tower.
I had spent lots of summer camp practicing my flying, ready for being on the broom racing team. But now, I needed to practice my spells.
I took my wand and transfiguration spell book out of my bag, and turned it to the marked page, before shivering. God, it was cold tonight. I took a small jam jar out of my bag, and put it on the ground, before I whispered “Caeruleus Inflamarae”, and waved my wand. I smiled. Some blue flames had appeared in the jar, heating up the area near it slightly. But, I gently put a finger in them, enjoying the warming presence, without burning myself. The bluebell flames spell was so useful.
I reached into my bag to pull out my next bit of equipment before pausing. I had heard a sound…

Mia breathed a sigh of relief as she climbed the astronomy tower stairs; dinner was finally over and it was a beautifully clear night. She was looking forward to seeing the stars very much. It was nice to see the night sky above you after a long day, and Mia certainly had had a long day today. Trying to finish every piece of homework the moment it had been set was not a good idea. At all. It was nice, admittedly, to relax, knowing there was nothing to worry about but 3 essays in one day did not sit well with her. Gosh, how she wished she could apparate already, it would be so much easier than climbing up this many steps. Stopping to catch her breath, she leant against the cold stone wall and grumbled, “Why can’t they make the stairs move like the other 141 staircases in this accursed castle”. She understood that the astronomy tower would obviously be the highest but did they really have to build over - she thought for a moment - 300 steps? Imagine the pure torture if you had an astronomy lesson and forgot your star chart or your quill, having to go all the way down and all the way back up again. She made a mental note to herself to always double check her astronomy equipment. Huffing with exhaustion, she dragged herself up the last few steps, ready to relax under the stars. Expecting the balcony to be empty, she looked up, only to be greeted by the sight of a third year in a purple coat. “Hi…” she stammered.

Nighttime casting
I smiled at the girl. She seemed nervous.
“Hi. Are you a first year? I don’t think I’ve seen you around.”
I looked back up at the stars, before looking back at her.
“Oh. I hope I won’t disturb you- I’m practising spells. But, you can still stay here.”
I waited to see what she would do, before realising that I was talking a lot. I bit my lip slightly, before trying to cast another spell, on one of the objects in my bag.
“Wingardium Leviosa.”
A child’s cutlery set was hanging in the air. I lowered it down in front of me, before taking the plastic knife out, putting it on the floor in front of me.
In case the girl was wondering what I was doing, I murmured “I was going to take some knives from the great hall to practice this spell. But, I didn’t want to get a detention for stealing. I remembered that I’d brought this in first year, and forgotten about it.”
I looked at it slightly, before sighing. I’d forgotten the incantation. I flicked through my spell book until I found what I was looking for.
“Cultrofors”
The knife turned into a paper airplane. I turned to the girl.
“This spell’s actually taught in Defence against the dark arts, even though it’s a transfiguration.”
I paused for a second.
“I’m Mira, by the way. Third year, Ravenclaw.”
“Hi. Are you a first year? I don’t think I’ve seen you around.”
I looked back up at the stars, before looking back at her.
