The summer holidays had whizzed by so fast, Diana thought she'd dreamt them. It was nearing the end of August, which meant it was time to buy her school supplies, but not as a first-year, as a second-year. The young seer had successfully lasted one full year at Hogwarts, and during that year she'd been sorted into Ravenclaw and went on all sorts of adventures.

Like it had the last time she'd come, Diagon Alley hustled and bustled with witches and wizards preparing for the new school year. Families wandered from shop to shop carrying parcels wrapped in brown paper, excited children tugging at their parents sleeves, and owls hooted from nearby cages. Diana moved through the crowds at a slower pace, allowing people to pass around her before stepping inside Flourish and Blotts.

The first thing that hit her was parchment, because well, she had just entered in the shop where all the books were being sold. Along with the smell of parchment was ink and leather binding. Diana was grateful that it was a lot quitter inside than outside on the streets, however, it was just as busy as outside. Shelves stretched from floor to ceiling, stacked with textbooks, spellbooks, and novels alike. Several ladders leaned against the taller shelves while shop assistants hurried about helping customers locate books on lengthy school supply lists.

Diana had come because like everyone else, she needed supplies for her second year. Diana took out her supply list and wandered the aisles, collecting her books. Diana knew where most were since she had been here last year, but she enjoyed looking at all the books to see if any caught her eye.

As she turned into another aisle, Diana's attention was drawn to a younger girl standing a short distance away. The child couldn't have been much older than ten or eleven and clutched what looked suspiciously like a Hogwarts book list. Every few moments, her eyes darted from the parchment to the towering shelves before looking around uncertainly again. Diana paused and remembered doing almost the exact same thing last year. For a moment Diana considered continuing on. The girl would probably find what she needed eventually. Or perhaps one of the shop assistants would notice her first. But something about the obvious uncertainty on the girl's face reminded Diana too much of herself before her first year. Diana walked over after a brief hesitation. "Um..." she began softly, careful not to startle the younger girl. "Are you... looking for one of your school books?"

The Next Chapter Pv Ōkami Faoláin
Diagon Alley was pure hell for me. There were people everywhere, and I was constantly being jostled without even an apology. Mom, having finally lost her patience, grabbed my arm and pulled me close. Every time a stranger dared to touch me, she gave them a terrifying glare. At one point, she stopped and looked me straight in the eye, saying she knew I didn't like it, but if we wanted to get out of there quickly, we had to divide up the tasks. So I started with the books, she took care of the cauldrons and accessories. Next, we'd go for my clothes, then my wand.

I agreed, even though I wasn't thrilled about it. Mom duplicated my list and then went off on her own, leaving me facing the vast department store. I went inside, a little lost, looking at my list, then the shelves, and so on. I was completely lost, and there was no one to help me. As I continued to panic, I heard a timid voice behind me. It asked if I needed help. I turned to her; she was no more than a year older than me. I wanted to answer her cheerfully, but my tone was more serious, blasé, and rather deep.

"Yes, I'd like some help if you don't mind..."

When the girl agreed to accept her help Diana gave a small reassuring smile. There was something about the serious tone of her response that made Diana wonder if she was simply nervous. She remembered how overwhelming Flourish and Blotts had felt when she had first come here the previous year. Especially with so many shelves and books surrounding her at once. Of course now that she's back in the store she doesn't feel like that anymore. "Of course," she replied softly. "I don't mind at all."

Before looking back at her Diana glanced down at the parchment in the girls hands. "Are you starting your first year?" she asked curiously even though she already had a feeling that was probably the case. "I remember being a little lost here before my first year. There are so many books that it can be difficult to figure out where everything is."

Before gently gesturing toward the list she shifted the books which she was already carrying against her chest. "If you'd like, I can help you find the ones on your list." A small smile returned to her face. "I've already had to find most of these once, so I know where some of them are." Before adding Diana paused for a moment. "You can show me your list if you'd like. We can go through it one book at a time." Diana didn't want the girl to feel rushed or embarrassed for feeling overwhelmed. Diana knew exactly what it was like to stand in a shop like this and have no idea where to begin because she did that last year. "I'm Diana, by the way." She offered the introduction with a quiet smile. "I'm a second-year Ravenclaw."

The young woman smiled at me, assuring me that it didn't bother her at all. At first, I found her rather shy, then she started asking me lots of questions at once and explaining many things to me. I had arrived in England less than a year ago, so when people talk a lot or quickly, I have a lot of trouble understanding them. I didn't show my confusion; at least I understood half of everything. I really needed to practice more. It's true that it's difficult to find everything in this gigantic place.

She offered to help me.

"I'd like to, but you already have a lot of books, and it must be difficult to carry them like that... here, put them in my bag."

I held out my open bag in front of her to accompany my words with gestures because I wasn't sure if she had understood because of my accent. And she continued talking; she finally introduced herself. Her voice was filled with joy, while when I answered her, my voice was drawn out and deep.

"My name is Ōkami Faoláin, I'm a first-year…"

She mentioned Ravenclaw…is that one of those houses, like I read about?

When Ōkami offered to carry her books Diana blinked before glancing down at the open bag before she looked back at her. A small smile then appeared on her face. "Thank you. That's very kind of you." Diana then transferred a few books into Ōkami's bag while also leaving a few still tucked against her own chest. "But you don't need to carry all of them. I can manage these."

Diana noticed the way Ōkami seemed to be relying on gestures to make sure her meaning was understood. She also remembered that she'd said she's a first year and there was something about her careful responses that made Diana wonder if English wasn't her first language. "Oh, and I'll try to speak a little slower," Diana added gently. "I didn't realize you were still getting used to English." She gave an apologetic little smile. "Sometimes I get carried away when I'm talking."

Diana's expression brightened with interest when Ōkami introduced herself. "It's nice to meet you, Ōkami." She repeated the name carefully and made sure she pronounced it correctly. "And yes, Ravenclaw is one of the four Houses at Hogwarts." Before continuing she shifted the books in her arms. "There are four Houses: Ravenclaw, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. The Sorting Hat decides which one each student belongs to when they arrive at Hogwarts." Diana then glanced at the list in Ōkami's hands. "You'll be sorted during the Welcoming Feast. It's a pretty memorable experience." A thoughtful smile crossed her face.

She then gestured toward the shelves around them. "But we can worry about that later. Right now, let's get your books." Diana looked over Ōkami's list again. "If you'd like, I'll show you where each one is. We can take our time." After all there were a lot of books that Ōkami needed to buy especially because she's in her first year. If Diana remembered correctly there were exactly seven books that she needed to buy. From these seven books you didn't necessarily need to buy any more in the other years but Diana still enjoyed coming to Flourish and Blotts.
