| ————— | Weekends. It was the favorite day of most students who seem to dislike the bustling crowd or the rush between lessons, worrying about being late and failing to perform a spell effectively. Well, the weekends always granted Hogwarts a quiet sort of freedom, so long as the professors won't suddenly dump too much workload on to their students. Luckily for Mari, she had finished everything earlier so she now have much more time to freely wander the grounds. After getting lost one time and becoming late to a class with other fellow classmates, she had decided to free up her schedules to roam around from time to time in order to learn the structures of the castle and the surrounding area in its entirety. But in this particular day, the little nature lover wandered farther than she usually does, walking calmly and feeling that crisp air with scents of the damp earth and fallen leaves that crunch against her shoes with every step. Seeing that golden, almost looking like an amber, sky that sprawls above the grounds, made her smile in appreciation. To top it off, the season made the exploring felt more like she's discovering pages that someone forgot to include in a book. With her small notebook rested securely underneath her arm and a graphite pencil tucked in her bun, she walked down the wide grounds of lush green and fallen leaves, stopping from time to time when she noticed some shrub or a cluster of fungi that she have only seen in the textbook and other nature-related encyclopedias from the textbook. It was fun to learn what nature has in store for the humanity living alongside it, but what excites the little Ravenclaw most was the fact that there are still many mysterious things around the world that is waiting to be solved. Back in her hometown, Bath, her family had made her a garden in the backyard of their humble abode, and it had became her peaceful sanctuary aside from the hill she frequented when she was a child. They had grown many types of ordinary flowers and herbs like lavender, rosemary, daisies, roses and many more. Aside from that, they also added a section to grow vegetables that her parents like per season. It could pass a greenhouse area—just without the glass-paneled house structure. And ever since discovering that the wizarding world exists and she is a witch, her mind always wander about thoughts and questions. How many magical plants can coexist along with the ordinary ones? Will she need magical soil if ever? Does magical soil exist? Can she dig a small part of earthen ground in this place and bring back home with her? It was questions... questions... and even more questions. But to Marigold, who thrives in curiosity and questions, it doesn't felt confusing. Rather, she felt thrilled as to her, every unfamiliar flora encountered is a discovery of a wonderful thing. When she finally noticed that her wandering feet had brought her by the shores of the Great Lake, she drew in the breeze and sigh with quiet admiration, pausing her pace to appreciate the peaceful view. Until now, she still can't get over that the mysterious, scary-looking lake she crossed with other first years through that rocky, small boat, was this same beautiful sight, calm and breathtaking beneath the autumn sky. Well... that's the beauty of nature. Her eyes squinted over the sloping hill nearby before ending on the cluster of trees beneath it. It looked perfect for a place to rest beneath the shade, so she went there. A small smile immediately formed over her lips as she observed how some of the trees clung to their leaves stubbornly while others already did surrendered to the autumn's embrace. There are also moss that had crept over the exposed roots and vines that wraps around some old trunks rather lazily. It was a typical image of a forest that she sees in books or online website... just far more vivid than any photograph or drawing could ever capture. The quiet beauty of it all held her attention completely, leaving her momentarily uncaring of everything else around her. Until something caught her eye. Those honeyed irises darted almost immediately by the peculiar thing dangling by that odd-looking tree by the side. It was surrounded with identical scarce trees which is why one may somehow overlook it when they're really not looking well enough. It was oddly shaped and doesn't resemble any fruits she knew, so her curiosity won almost instantly, and she found herself looking up by the tree, walking from left to right... as if seeing it from different angle might help her in determining what in the world could it be. But it only proved to be futile... especially when she can't really see it clearly. "If only it were lower..." she mumbled to herself, pursing her lips thoughtfully. She wanted to draw it on her notebook but it felt like doing so in that position would have her enduring a massive neck strain and her planned sketch would end up being just a guesswork, especially since there seemed to be details around the entirety of the tree that she can't really make out in this distance. If I could only look closer... her hand rested by the trunk. Then she paused, gaze immediately lifting to the tree... in the trunk in particular. It looked sturdy— climbable. It was a reckless thought, especially for a person like Mari who isn't the adventurous sort of person. She's definitely not skilled with the sort of thing she was thinking about, but still, she can't deny that she had done a bit of climbing back then... but with special measures and with parental supervision! "Yes, that's fine..." she whispered to herself, seeing a branch she can climb on... not particularly high but enough for her to able to get some proper look. Too immersed at her thought, she didn't even looked around to see if anyone was around to witness a— well, something that can be called a questionable idea. She just stuffed her notebook on the side root of the tree before resting both hands against the rough bark... and carefully tested the first foothold. When she felt it hold her weight well enough, she hauled herself upward, slowly moving from one branch to another one with her eyes fixed on her goal: that curious fruit waiting for her up there... ... all while mentally hoping that she won't fall for her reckless action. |

A month had passed since the boy’s return to Hogwarts at the beginning of September, and Frederick’s routine carried on as though it had never been interrupted by the summer holidays. Classes during the day, afternoons spent studying in the common room or the library, and some free time to unwind with his friends on weekends, which still offered pleasant weather despite the cold winds brought by autumn. It was a new school year, but Fred felt the same, perhaps slightly taller, but essentially the same. This was only his second year at the school of witchcraft and wizardry, and Buckley already felt completely at home, bringing to life the many stories he had heard from his parents about the castle.
As was customary, just as he did when he was at home in Bristol, his hometown, Frederick wanted to make the most of the weekend by venturing outdoors. However, unlike at home, where he had a backyard at his disposal with a small vegetable garden, a few but large trees that shaded part of the backyard, and a larger stretch of open grassy space where he used to play, at Hogwarts, Fred had an expanse of natural grounds that seemed to stretch as far as the eye could see. Open fields and clearings, dense forests, a large lake, greenhouses and, of course, the Quidditch pitch were the places that came to Buckley’s mind as he got ready to leave his dormitory. It didn’t cross his mind to invite any of his friends along, so he left the Gryffindor Tower alone, though excited at the prospect of enjoying the sunshine outside.
As he walked at an easy pace toward the grounds, he settled on a particular spot he had not yet visited on his own. The Black Lake. During his first year, shortly after arriving at Hogwarts, Frederick had attended the autumn ball with some friends, which had taken place right on the lake. Quite a party on a ghost ship, with strange happenings, but still, a great night, he remembered. Another time, when a thief had stolen the Gryffindor House Cup, Fred and his housemates had tried to uncover the mystery surrounding the theft, and it was on that occasion that the boy had returned to the lakeshore in search of clues. His thoughts wandered as he made his way there, remembering as well the first time he had seen the imposing stone castle, sailing alongside the other first-years, letting his mind drift through other memories and making the journey there much more peaceful than the first three had been.
Many steps later, surrounded by a breathtaking landscape, as he reached the top of one final hill, Buckley began to make out the surroundings of the Great Lake on the horizon below. The view was equally incredible, with the surface of the water reflecting the sky like a mirror, surrounded by trees with lush canopies and rocks of various shapes scattered along the shore. Frederick had not set any particular goal for his outing; his initial idea had simply been to make his way to the lake. Once he reached the place, he walked straight toward the water until he was quite close to the shore, where he crouched down and picked up a few stones of a particular shape, their surfaces smooth and flat, so he could skim them across the water and make them bounce several times before sinking a few meters farther on. He tossed one little stone after another, watching them trace small arcs from one bounce to the next.
Standing facing the lake, with his back to the large trees surrounding it, Fred took some time to realize there was someone else nearby. First, he heard the rustling of leaves, followed by a few snaps of branches, finally making him turn toward the noises. From where he stood near the water, the boy had to look up to find the source of the sounds. He was surprised to see a girl climbing one of the trees, completely focused on gripping the branches and seemingly unaware that Frederick was now watching her. Buckley knew that some creatures roamed the lake, and when he heard the noises, he couldn’t deny that this had been the first thing that came to mind. Once the small, involuntary fright had passed, his curiosity compelled him to approach the large trunk where the girl was.
“Hey, what are you doing up there?” he asked, looking up, without considering that his approach might frighten the girl as well.
