“Welcome to the second annual alumni sports event! This summer we’re playing quidditch!” Ruckus Weems’s voice boomed through the stands. He was circling the Hogwarts quidditch pitch on his beloved Oakshaft. Down below, the alumni who had agreed to participate in today’s event would be paddling through the abnormally humid summer air to get ready for his whistle.

He hoped the stands were full of other alumni and students from the international stage: all the major schools were already gathered here for summer camp, so it would be simple to pop over and see a few of their graduated peers play quidditch. In the stands, @Katherine Townsend had so graciously agreed to lend some of her time and energy to Ruckus’s chaotic event planning—they both hoped they would be able to host even more alumni events in the future where their students could learn about life after school. The charms professor was helping with some refreshments to keep the crowd satiated while they watch the match.

Today’s players were an interesting bunch: a tracker, an explorer, a metal charmer, two headmasters, a trainee auror, a radio crew member, a student wand-maker, one professional duellist, one Wizard Trials athlete, and an actual professional quidditch player. There was also a young man who claimed he was a starving artist. Ruckus wasn’t sure that was a career necessarily, but he appreciated the kid’s attitude. He was worried the professional athletes would completely steal the show—he hoped there would be a few good underdog stories. They only had enough players for first-string, so the game would probably be over in a timely manner. But one never knew what luck the golden snitch would bring.
A note to all players: The word count minimum is 200 words. The next deadline to post and submit strategy is 168 hours (7 days) from the time this is posted. You must include in your first post (and preferably all posts) any active abilities, your character's stats (without broom; you can also include the stats with broom, but they must be clearly separated), and your character's chosen broom and its effects.

Summer. Howard's least favorite season of the year for many reasons. The sun was a constant threat to his sensitive skin and required protective clothing. The heat and humidity cried for short sleeves and pants, but alas he was trapped in quite the vicious cycle. Not to mention that his work was mostly done outdoors. While cooling charms could be helpful it was a bother to try and maintain his spells. Anyone that knew the young man during his schooling years could attest to that, but what they had also witnessed was a boy with quite the talent for sports. So, despite the unpleasant weather a pointy smile was still plastered across Howard's face as he looked out to the Quidditch Stadium with a sense of nostalgia that warmed his heart.

This pitch had become one of his favorite places as Howard led team Hufflepuff for many years. While a future in professional sports had been tempting it proved not to be his calling, but damn did he miss it. So, when Ruckus had put together the summer Alumni games Howard didn't hesitate. Last years broom race had been a blast, but this year promised Quidditch and there was no chance he wasn't going to be here. Not to mention that several of his friends were here too. "Serena! You're going down dude!" He barked out across the pitch to one of his best friends. He'd do anything for her, but today she had been marked enemy and that freakin' brother of hers too. Howard gripped the beater bat and shouted out a cheer to his teammates before kicking off into the air!

It had taken a great deal of FOMO to get Cyrus back on a broom. He'd thought of his first unofficial broom race and shuddered, but then remembered that he'd done okay (and also was a bit lame) during the alumni broom race. So, when he heard a Quidditch game was being put on by the organiser of the broom race, he thought, well, why not?

Now that he was awkwardly figuring out how to seat himself in a Pine Chopper once again, he remembered why not. He hated being stuck on a stick in the air. The feeling of the broom – a sturdier one than his teammates seemed to have – underneath him left him halfway weightless, which scared him because he was just a guy, not an astronaut.

Cyrus didn't know what to think of most of his teammates. He vaguely thought he'd seen most of them around before. Of the girls, two of them gave him the heebie-jeebies. The other two, he didn't know very well, which also gave him a lesser form of heebie-jeebies. Yikes. But he did recognise Howard from the really weird vampire tomb.

'Yo, Howard, my man!' he exclaimed, waving energetically. The movement threw Cyrus off-balance, and he'd only waved for but a jiffy before returning his hands to the surface of his Pine Chopper. His heartbeat pounded in his ears. This was going to be interesting.

At this moment in time, Phyllis was very sure she loved two things: Quidditch and freedom. The first was well-established. She'd loved Quidditch since she was old enough to listen to matches on the radio, try to convince her dad to bring her to one, and pilot her very own toy broom around. She did Quidditch all through school. Now her job orbited Quidditch, helping with the million little tasks it took to get the great game on the airwaves to reach the next bright-eyed little kid.

As for the freedom? It was sort of weird, getting to go wherever she wanted. She was at freaking Hogwarts, right now, the tail-end of a whirlwind summer of travel with only intermittent stops at her new Toronto apartment. The long summer days were really nice, actually, when she wasn't stuck at her mother's house in the middle of nowhere. Sure, there were a lot more adulting things to worry about now, money and food and rent, and her job was about to start in earnest, but today was going to be the perfect last hurrah.

Many of the other players were familiar, even if she didn't know them well. Years of exchanges meant she knew a lot of faces and sometimes the names that went to them. Also, her headmaster was here? That felt pretty weird, but she guessed he wasn't her headmaster anymore. Because of the crowd, she wasn't shouting quite as much last-minute encouragement at people, but she did have plenty of hi's, grins, and high-fives to go around. In her Keeper gear, surprisingly well cared-for broom in hand, Phyllis was so ready to go.

In the role of Keeper when you attempt to block your goal, if your opponent somehow has advantage on attempting to score a goal, that is negated (they only have their normal single roll against you).

In the role of Keeper a critical success on an attempt to block a goal not only means that the Keeper caught the quaffle but they have also successfully passed the quaffle (without a chance of interception) to an allied target of their choice. A critical failure in this case cannot happen for a Keeper, they get to re-roll the attempt to block.
Note: Critical failure and critical success chances can be expanded with certain abilities and skills.

In the role of Keeper, if the Keeper effectively blocks an attempt to score rather than obtain possession of the quaffle they can kick the quaffle at the user who attempted to score. This must be declared at the time actions are submitted. This would have damage like a bludger using an accuracy roll to hit and the user's strength score to determine the amount of damage done. If the quaffle hits or misses the target, a quafflegrab the next round would be necessary to determine which team has possession of the quaffle again.

A long, long time ago, Bridget was a Quidditch player. Only for the blip of her second year, it was so long ago and since buried in such a reputation for duelling that most people probably didn't remember, but the old comfort around a broom hadn't entirely faded. She was sure she was rusty, flying classes and last year's broom race were no substitute for real practices and games, but this was all just for fun, a statement she tended to be decent at applying outside of duelling.

She had been split from all her friends in the team-making, unfortunately. The other side had both her flatmates (and Koko's professional experience), her former duelling teammate, and Cyrus, who was... yes, he was a sort of friend, too. Not a close one, but a friend nonetheless between being sealed in a tomb together and his kind response to her rather desperate owl. She hoped to talk to all of them later, if they were conscious for it. Evelynn, too, who must be off to plenty of impressive things now that she'd graduated.

Of her team, she knew Serena best. A very low bar, given they had exchanged few words over the years, but she was glad to see her all the same. There was also a vaguely familiar redhead attempting to high-five her, which she was unprepared for but acquiesced to. It was a rather poor high-five. She moved both hands to her broom so no one else could attempt another and mentally reviewed what she could of Chaser formations.

𝕾ummer was coming to a close, which meant that school was right around the corner. Yes, school. Greta may have given her bitter-sweet farewells to Durmstrang and the multitude of individuals who had made eight years so wonderful, but that didn't mean her education was behind her. In a way, it was really only just beginning. Taking over the family business was still the primary objective, especially now with the pressure to make a name for herself in order to prove—to herself if not to the Kolbecks—that she could make it on her own. That she wouldn't be a detraction or unskilled dependent to Felix. That she could be an asset—perhaps even an internationally renowned one—to his family. To do that, she would need to hone her craft and commit herself to diligent study of modern wandcrafting.

Conveniently enough, that effort would bring her to England. Her choice to attend the London WAVAD campus had been a deliberate one. Not only would it serve to encourage a greater mastery of the English language through immersion, but it would provide a significant—she hoped—launching pad to begin networking and spreading awareness of the Franssonstav business. It just so happened to be that the week she arrived into the country was the week she was made aware of a game of quidditch to be played at Hogwarts for previously and recently graduated students. Naturally, she jumped at the opportunity. After all, as chaser of the Durmstrang team, quidditch had been a large part of her identity. Going professional had even been a very real consideration for a while until her brother Hanzo had made it clear that he had no intention of taking over the family business; and when would she have another chance to play quidditch again?

Besides, if this had anything to do with the summer camps that Hogwarts hosted each year, there was a very real possibility that @Felix Kolbeck might be dragged to attend. And the hope of being able to surprise him with an unexpected rendezvous was just too much to pass up. And so, on the day of the game, Greta had arrived promptly. In typical fashion for her on game days, she had done her hair in a series of braids decorated with black beads and rings. Her eye make-up was on the milder side, however. The typical heavy black war paint just didn't seem appropriate without the might of Durmstrang at her back, so instead she toned it down to a smaller homage. Her Durmstrang quidditch uniform had serendipitously been packed (just in case!) and it practically gleamed, freshly pressed and cleaned, although she had left signs of wear and tear on her protective pads for posterity's sake.

"Hello everyone!" She beamed brightly, greeting ally and opponent alike as she arrived onto the pitch, a skip to her step. "I am very excited to be her—ARJAN!" Her gasp of delight accompanied a stifled squeal as soon as she spied the ex-Durmstrang beater. "You are playing today as well?!" Speech slipped smoothly back to the Russian that had been native to their mutual school as she posed her question to @Arjan Oberoi. Her joy would eventually wane slightly when the realization would come that they would be on opposing teams, but she'd still maintain the smile. "I hope for us a good game!" She would wish him, then cheekily add on, "I want an autograph after!"

Once the teams had been clarified and Greta had been pointed in the right direction of those whom she would be calling allies for the duration of the game, she was quick to close in on them. That light-hearted step followed her into their midst, face aglow with excitement, "Hi! I am Greta! It is nice to meet all you. I played chaser for Durmstrang!" Her accent was still quite thick, harkening to her Norwegian roots, but at least her conversational English had grown to be passable in more recent years. "I am excited to play quidditch today."

Her excitement deepened all the more so as she recognized one of the faces as an opponent her team had faced off against one time when she had been forced to take a break from the sport. "You!" A finger raised to point at @Evelynn Decipio. Although not typically one to remember faces or details about an individual, quidditch was a special interest, and special players earned a place in her memory. "You were seeker to defeat Niffy!" She recalled clearly the match where the two seekers had battled head-to-head, each grasping for the snitch at the same time. Tragically, and quite to her surprise, it had not been Valentin who had come out the victor. "I wanted to meet you for long time."

There would be no time to speak further on her admiration for the girl's performance on that occasion, though. Only quick exchanges with her other teammates could be made before they were called to take their starting places. "Maybe we talk after the game?" She asked hopefully, swinging a leg over her Oakshaft and kicking into the air.

In the role of Chaser, if you have a contested quaffle grab and a contested strength roll between yourself and another user is in progress, unless they have the same broom, you would be the victor of the contested quaffle grab. In addition, rounds where you are successfully carrying the quaffle in an attempt to score, you only take half-damage from bludgers and blatching attempts.

In the role of Chaser, as a free action if the user of this broom is successful in the quafflegrab they can as a free action pass the Quaffle to another user in an attempt to score. There is a chance of the quaffle being intercepted, however due to the fact that the user is "so fast" with the quaffle this would be considered "surprising" and the attempt to score would be done at +3 accuracy by the player it was passed to in an attempt to score. (Note: The attempt to score would be an automatic attempt by the user that catches the passed quaffle.)

In the role of Chaser when you attempt to catch a passed Quaffle (such as when the Keeper has possession of the Quaffle and passes it to a teammate) you have advantage (meaning that it is rolled twice and you keep the better option) on attempts to catch if the opponent team attempts to intercept.

An invitation to return to Hogwarts after graduation had not at all been something Evelynn had expected. In fact, if she didn't know any better, she might have thought it to be unprecedented. The only time she could think of where alumni or adults were permitted onto school grounds were for educational circumstances—either as guest lecturers in a class, or as part of a career demonstration for soon-to-be-graduates investigating potential career opportunities. To return for a simple game seemed entirely out of place. She'd thought about declining. But something about it was simultaneously endearing.

Besides, as the weeks turned to nearly two months without response from her application to the Auror training program and without much consideration to a plan B, perhaps this was exactly the distraction she needed. Plus, it would be nice to see @Winnie Athanatos and @Marshal Mozor if summer camp happened to be occurring at the same time and they were attending. Plus, she supposed, there would be a chance Dealla or Pericles or Aly may also be joining to partake in this little alumni reunion. So without a reasonable reason to abstain, she found herself arriving in Hogsmeade the day of the game with a rather loud CRACK and the wave of temporary disorientation that tended to come with apparition.

Much to her disappointment, however, her eventual arrival at the quidditch pitch, broom in hand, would not reveal a grand gathering of her closest Ravenclaw friends. Though neither would it be entirely devoid of familiar faces. "Howard." @Howard White's name had been uttered with as much surprise as guarded hope. With their conversation nearly a year prior, she had hoped to wipe the slate clean and even develop a sort of working alliance, but studying for NEWTs (read as: this writer completely falling off the face of the planet for a little while there and then having to prioritize family/staff/homework above RP until just recently) had somewhat infringed upon her intent to foster that friendship and with so much time passed, she couldn't entirely be certain where they stood. Nevertheless, she offered him a hopeful, if restrained, close-lipped smile and nod of her head.

A far less uncertain smile was offered to @Koko Riddle when the blonde arrived on scene, admiration and warmth encompassing Evelynn's features as she recognized the former Headliner Secretary. "Koko—" Habit had almost had her saying Miss Riddle, but her tongue shifted direction at the last second, deciding in that instant that surnames now felt strange in a context beyond the school's stone walls. "—it is so lovely to see you." The circumstance wasn't the only thing that was lovely. It really hadn't been that long since Koko had graduated, but time had worked its magic. Riddle had always been an exceptionally pretty individual, yet she wore the maturity of adulthood with a grace and confidence Evelynn found both captivating and enviable. It really was an exceptionally pleasant surprise to see her, though. Her competence and aura had always left Evelynn with a highly positive impression of the girl woman.

To the others with whom she was less familiar, she extended a hand and introduced herself, "Evelynn. Evelynn Decipio. A pleasure to make your acquaintance." She would have been inclined to converse further, inquiring into everyone's origins and immediate career paths and plans, when a rather bubbly blonde shorter than her by a handful of inches came onto the scene. In truth, Evelynn didn't need the introduction to know exactly who it was; she had observed enough of Durmstrang's quidditch games during summer events to place the identity of their Valkyrie. It was odd to see her up close, however. She was much smaller than Evelynn had expected. And more forward.

Brows lofted, eyes briefly redirecting to the lofted finger before shifting to its owner. "Yes, I was," Evelynn remarked with something bordering amusement. That match had been quite a long time ago. She was hardly the same red-headed seeker that had played in that three-team battle royale. Her transition to duelling and the various events that had transpired in the years between had seen to that. Nor could she even claim to have the same fanatic pursuit of knowledge for all things and people quidditch related as she had once had and so couldn't share in the girl's long-standing desire for an introduction. Not to be rude, however, she smiled and replied, "I am honoured." And to the suggestion to speak following the game, simply shrugged, "As you like."

If nothing else, Evelynn had to acknowledge, it could prove an opportunity to network. Plans to join the Auror academy were proving less certain by the day. If rejection was an inevitability, she supposed she would have to face that fact sooner than later. And if that was the case, it wouldn't hurt to get to know other adults in the wizarding world. A glance to all of those gathered revealed very few that she actually knew. A polite wave of her hand directed itself to @Bridget Collins across the way, but most of the others were entirely foreign to her. Which meant there was a wide range of connections to potentially be made. But... first there was a game to play...

In the role of Seeker when you have found the snitch, if someone attempts to use Alley Oop to help you find the snitch, you will not have disadvantage. However, with this broom you do not gain the +1 chance to grab the snitch for rounds that the Alley Oop is used. To clarify, each round someone attempts to grab a snitch they get a +1 to the attempt and this stacks. There is no bonus (or stack from this round's attempt to grab) to grabbing the snitch.

In the role of Seeker, if an opponent attempts to Bludger or Blatch you, there is a 20% chance that you veer out of the way the last second and another enemy player at RANDOM is targeted instead. (Note: The new target still gets their normal dodge attempt. This is not considered to be an auto-dodge, in fact this roll is done before any accuracy rolls are done.)

In the role of Seeker, when using the search action if you critically fail on your search you get a re-roll in an attempt to find the snitch. In an attempt to grab the snitch, if you critically fail on your attempt to grab the snitch you get to re-roll your attempt to grab the snitch.

Alumni Quidditch Game summer 2026
Last year's Alumni Broom Race had been quite exhilarating, and while Quidditch's own thrill fluctuated from time to time, Koko had considered that, at least, playing alongside Ruby and Howard and against Bridget and Arjan could be quite enjoyable.

The weather, however, would be far less so. Though Koko did not mind a bit of sunshine (it brought out her eyes), there came a point where enough was enough, and there had, arguably, been far too much sun this summer. She lifted her hand to shield her eyes from the brightness, all while still squinting and hoping she would not start sweating profusely in this heat. Nonetheless, she couldn't (and wouldn't) have stopped a red-lipped smile, showing bright teeth, from forming. The Quidditch Stadium (and the nearby training pitch) had been her haunts of choice during her school years. Stepping foot on the manicured grass felt not unlike embarking on a long-awaited return trip home.

She hadn't expected the warmth that filled her with she saw Evelynn's smile, and she easily returned it, her eyes shining as a response to Evelynn's kind words. 'You, too,' Koko said, offering a hand for a friendly shake. It was strange to think that she hadn't seen Evelynn for a year – and what a year could do. 'You're really looking lovely. Seems like the last year treated you well – we'll have to catch up, though, after the game, if you want.'

Koko shot @Arjan Oberoi what she hoped was a charming grin. You're going down, it was meant to convey, though she wouldn't say the words aloud just yet. Besides, Howard seemed to have that end covered with what he shouted to Serena. Koko would also offer @Bridget Collins a flutter of her fingers in a playful wave before mounting her Varápidos and heading up to the Keeper's rings, the blocking of which had become almost second nature. She leaned back on her broom and flexed her fingers, surveying the rest of the players on the pitch.

Yeah, whatever the outcome, this would be fun.
