Stupid Staircases PV Diana Roberts

As Leo was walking through the corridors, he admired the portraits. It was often interesting to see what they were doing, as these ones moved. They seemed kind of scary when he first spotted them, but now he was pretty used to them.

That was when he reached the moving staircases.

It was a miracle he hadn't gotten injured here yet, given his perpetual clumsiness and the nature of these stairs. They were continually moving, transporting students here and there. Leo had a sudden thought. It was kind of dangerous, but he had nothing better to do. Infact, nothing to do at all.

He decided to turn these moving staircases into a game. He got onto one staircase, and hopped on another staircase beside which moved to the right just after he hopped. He saw a few students moving around, minding their own business. A few ghosts were moving around, floating here and there.

Leo made a mental note not to jump 3 feet into the air when a portrait or ghost spoke to him. Yes, he had gotten used to the weirdness, but they still got him from time to time. He hoped he doesn't run into a ghost while he's jumping. He spotted another staircase which just stopped moving and jumped, trying to land on it.

Which suddenly moved to the right. Leo missed the staircase just by an inch, and continued falling.

It took him a second to realize he was falling. That's when it hit him. He was in danger. He could fall straight to the ground and break something.

That was when another thing hit him. A staircase from the right. On the right side of his stomach.

He flew towards his left. He couldn't believe it. A staircase slammed into his side? What? As he was flying sideways, he spotted the railing of another staircase. It was, thankfully, still. Leo focused on a particular piece of that railing. As he passed over the staircase, he reached out for the railing with his left hand and grabbed onto it with all his might.

The momentum made him swing around the railing painfully, and his body slammed onto the staircase again. But at least he wasn't moving. He was hanging onto a railing. Barely. And his stomach was still stinging painfully from the hit of that one staircase moving into his right.

It was a miracle you hadn't gotten hurt here yet, he asked himself. You jinxed it, ya idiot.

When she noticed something unusual ahead Diana had been making her way through the corridors with a book tucked against her chest. The moving staircases were shifting into place as usual however something about the movement caught her attention. A boy had just missed one of the staircases and was now hanging onto the railing of another.

Diana immediately stopped. Her muted grey-green eyes widened slightly as she watched him struggle to keep his grip. She simply stood there for a moment and tired to understand how he'd managed to get himself into that particular situation. Then her confusion was quickly outweighed by her concern. "Are you alright?" she called as she carefully approached the staircase. Her voice remained calm although there was a clear note of concern in it.

Before stepping closer Diana glanced at the moving staircases around them and watched their positions. She wasn't about to make the situation worse by rushing onto a staircase that might move underneath her. She moved toward the railing once she was certain the staircase she was standing on was stable enough. "Hold on," she said gently. "I'm going to help you."

She crouched near the railing and offered him her hand. "Can you pull yourself up?" Her eyes briefly flicked toward where he'd been struck before returning to his face. "You don't have to hurry. The staircases aren't going anywhere." Before Diana added with the faintest hint of amusement despite her concern a small pause followed. "Although I'd probably prefer if you didn't try jumping between them again." She kept her hand extended as she gave him an encouraging smile. "I've seen people get lost on these stairs, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone try to turn them into an obstacle course."

His fingers were hurting and his knuckles were turning white from the effort by the time someone came to his rescue.

A girl was walking by, and when she saw him, he saw her eyes widen as she saw him hanging onto the rail for dear life. He wouldn't blame her; even he would wonder how he'd end up like this is he didn't know. Then she immediately rushed over. She was here to help, Leo realized, letting out a sigh of relief. "I'm trying," he muttered, when she asked him to hold on.

She then crouched over the rail and stretched out her hand, her fingers wide open.

Leo found himself wondering if she can pull him up. She seemed slim, and whether she had the strength to pull him up seemed like a good question to think about. He hoped se was stronger than she looked.

Then Leo spotted the slight hint of amusement in her eyes and the encouraging smile, and she asked him to not treat the staircases as obstacle courses.

Obstacle courses. Seriously? Well, it was pretty accurate to what Leo did, but in his defense he was bored, and didn't expect the staircases to avoid him while he was in midair.

"Oh come on," he grumbled.

He now had to grab onto her hand. Okay, he thought. Do not mess this up. Please do not be clumsy now. He increased the grip pf his left hand on the railing and slowly let go with his right. The strain in his left hand immediately doubled, ad Leo would've falmost fallen then and there if he weren't bracing for it. "Woah!" He let out, waiting for him to steady.

Then, slowly, he stretch his hand out, and his right hand brushed her fingers. He stretched, wincing from the effort, and wrapped his fingers tightly around her wrist.

"Okay..." He muttered through gritted teeth. "I think I've got you. Pull me up, fast!"

Leo is lighter then he looks, so he can be easily pulled. he's gonna fall on his butt or face again onto the floor when he gets pulled up btw, that's how clumsy he is.

As Leo finally caught hold of her hand Diana tightened her grip on his hand. Diana immediately glanced at the staircase beneath them before she looked back at him as his request made her eyes widen slightly. "Alright. Hold on." She shifted her position and planted both feet firmly against the step before lowering her center of gravity. Diana wasn't exactly a strong person but she also wasn't going to let him slip again. With one hand still gripping onto the railing for stability she pulled steadily with the other.

"Come on," she encouraged. Her voice was calm but more urgent now. "Just a little further." She could feel the strain in her arm as she tried to pull him up but also could feel that he was very light. She kept pulling until she could see that he had enough of his weight over the railing to help himself. "Use the railing too," she reminded him. "I can't do all the work." Well she probably could because of how light he is but her hand that was gripping the railing began to hurt.

Once Leo was safely back on the staircase Diana immediately looked him over because her concern returned now that he was no longer in immediate danger. "Are you hurt?" she asked as her gaze briefly moved toward his stomach and then his hands. "You were hit pretty hard by that staircase." She paused and studied him with a mixture of disbelief and concern. "And before you say you're fine" Diana added as she raised an eyebrow. "You were hanging from a railing several floors above the ground because you decided the moving staircases would make a good obstacle course." A tiny smile tugged at the corner of her mouth despite the fact that she was concerned about him. "I think you're allowed to admit that one hurt."

God, this girl was blunt. She was right, but wow. He had probably never met anyone else could be this blunt, while being this nice. The usual blunt people who Leo met were lonely people or downright meanies.

He put his arm on the right of his belly. It was kind of stiff. Maybe it was swollen. He had to check under his clothes when he was alone.

Wow. He got hit by a staircase. No wonder it still stung. The adrenaline from all the falling was still running through is head, but he could feel his heart rate slow down, now that he was on solid, not moving floor.

The floor wasn't moving. He suddenly felts and immense wave of gratitude and guilt flood his heart. He had always take the fact that the ground was still and the amount of safety the fact provided for granted. He immediately knelt down and pressed his cheek to the hard floor of the staircase.

Who cares if it's dirty? He has to learn to appreciate the fact that the staircase was moving, or karma would hit him again, probably on the left side of his tummy again. "Aah.....Solid ground.....I'll never take you for granted," he apologized.

He then looked up at the girl. ''Don't judge me, I know people walk here! And, regarding your question... I am fine. Maybe. For now." He stood up, and his right side immediately sent a jolt of pain through his spinal chord, making him wince. "Even if that statement might be a blatant lie...".

He straightened up, now aware that the girl was looking at him with concern, and maybe a bit of judgement. Well, he was just pretty much hugging the floor, he wouldn't blame her if she did. "I'm Leo. Leo Madahand. Thanks for helping me."

As Leo suddenly knelt down and pressed his cheek against the staircase Diana blinked and for a moment she just stared. She had no clue what she'd just witnessed however she supposed that after seeing someone attempt to jump between moving staircases she shouldn't have been particularly surprised. Nevertheless Diana couldn't help the small confused smile that appeared on her face. "I wasn't going to judge you," she assured him despite the fact that there was a hint of amusement in her voice. "Although I can't say I've ever seen anyone apologize to a staircase before."

When Leo stood and immediately winced her smile faded slightly. Diana's attention returned to his side and the concern in her expression became more obvious. "You're definitely not fine," she pointed out gently. "At least, not completely." Before looking at him she glanced down the staircase. "You should probably get that checked by the Hospital Wing. Getting hit by a moving staircase doesn't sound like something you should just ignore." Diana paused before adding, "Especially if it's swollen."

Her expression softened again at his introduction and she smiled politely. "It's nice to meet you, Leo. I'm Diana." She hesitated for a moment before adding, "Diana Roberts. I'm a Ravenclaw." Before returning to Leo her eyes briefly drifted toward the moving staircases around them. She still couldn't quite understand why he'd decided this was a good idea in the first place but then again she supposed everyone had their own ways of finding something to do. "And you're welcome," she said sincerely. "I'm glad I happened to be passing by." Diana then glanced toward the direction of the nearest corridor. "Do you think you can walk to the Hospital Wing yourself?" she asked. "Or should I come with you?"
