September first. Early evening. Moderately cold. He got off the train, hurling his trunk behind him, already changed into his school uniform. After the day of traveling, it had turned dark outside, and shadows glided the surfaces of Hogsmeade station. Amid the crowd, he looked for younger faces, ones to follow. He had heard from his father that the first years were to take boats instead of the thestral-drawn carriages to the castle, but he had little idea where to find them. A voice rang out, calling the first years. The man introduced himself as the grounds keeper of Hogwarts, and said that this evening he would accompany the first years on their sail to a new beginning. After all of the first years had gathered, they walked some distance from the station to reach the Black Lake.

When they reached it, he admired it quietly. It was still, the water dark and opaque, as if hiding some centuries-old secret. It was such a contrast to the sea back at home – the sea was unyielding, forever disturbed, and the lake looked almost too quiet. He had read of the many creatures that lurked in it, friendly and not so much. Excitement rose in his chest. With the group, he approached the water. At the shore, about a dozen little boats were banked, and soon the students started filling them. He waited his turn, letting everyone pick first, and soon he realized all the seats were taken. He stalked around, looking for a free seat in a boat, and finally found one that still had a spot left. It was already occupied by two girls. He approached them hesitantly. His mind kept drifting back to Muggle school, where the kids made fun of him and he didn’t have any friends. He hoped they would be nicer.

Hello. Could I join you? The rest of the boats are full,” he said, in a voice that sounded self-assured, but inside he was anxious for their answer.

During the train ride,Electra had thought of any kind of possible scenario that could occur when she arrived at Hogwarts.
She hoped she would get into Slytherin, like Danae- at least there she would definitely have the favour of the professors, not to mention she knew some faces and names because of her family.
But then again, with the excitement came the stress. What if she got into the wrong house? What if she did something so idiotic that everyone disliked her from the very start?
She tried to push those thoughts aside and raise her chin high as she sat in an empty boat. Soon after, another girl came and joined her.
Electra looked the girl up and down. She considered talking to her but she felt the need to observe her first. Did she have any friends? How did she talk to others? That would definitely help Electra find an approach.
Until then, she gave the girl a small, polite smile, before turning away and looking at the dark water of the lake, reflecting light from some lanterns and of course the castle in the distance.

A few minutes later, she heard footsteps approaching and raised her head, taking in the boy who asked if he could join them.
She waited for a moment, glancing at the girl hesitantly before replying with all the confidence she could manage to project
"Sure,you can sit.
I gestured at the empty seat. This boy looked approachable enough for Electra to talk to.

"I'm Electra,by the way. You?

Getting of the train I took a small breath and looked around nervously. There were so many students everywhere all talking excitedy about Hogwarts. I held my things cose and tried not to look as nervous as I felt.

Soon all the first years were called to one side. I quickly folowed the group trying not to get lost. We were led towards the lake where several small boats were waiting for us.

I stayed near the crowd for a little while waiting until some of the students had already climbed into the boats and the crowd lessened.

Then I noticed a boat with only one girl sitting inside.

I looked at her for a moment before deciding to join. I carefully stepped into the boat and sat down leaving some space betwen us.

I glanced at the girl. She had pale skin with a few small freckles, long straight black hair, and bright baby blue eyes. She looked quite calm though I could not tell what she was thinking.

She gave me a small polite smile which I returned to her aswell.

"Hello" I said nervous.

I did not know her name yet so I decided not to ask imediately. Instead I looked towards the lake. The dark water reflected the warm light from Hogwarts which stood proudly in the distance.

It was beautiful.

I was still staring at the castle when I heard someone approaching.

A boy was coming towards our boat. He had short messy hair that looked like it had been blown aroud by the wind. His grey eyes were narrow and his face looked serious. He was shorter than many of the other boys, but he had a strong looking build.

He stopped beside our boat.

"Hello. Could I join you? The rest of the boats are full" he asked.

I looked at the girl beside me then back at him.

Before I could say anything the girl spoke.

"Sure, you can sit."

She gestued towards the empty seat.

Then she looked at him and added "I'm Electra, by the way. You?"

Before the boy settled into the boat. I gave them both a small smile and said.

"I'm Penelope."

I looked back at the castle my nervousnes slowly turning into excitement.

We were finally going to Hogwarts.

At the black-haired girl’s response, Simon climbed into the boat and settled in the back. The atmosphere in their boat was tense. The girls seemed as nervous as Simon, and he found some comfort in that. From their tones he could hear they were good-natured. They introduced themselves as Electra and Penelope. He wasn’t good with names, but he could remember faces. Then he realised he should introduce himself as well.

I’m Simon. Nice to meet you,” he said politely.

He didn’t feel like himself. This polite tone and timid sitting stance on the thwart – he was completely out of his element. He could only attribute it to the nervousness of the looming question of the night – which house he would be sorted into. He considered starting a conversation about it with the other two first years. It would at least dispel some of the awkwardness hanging in the air between them.

Once again he was preparing to do something so unlike himself and make small talk. Was this what Hogwarts would do to him? He decided that only tonight, with the excuse of the anxiety swirling in his stomach, would he submit to the usual standards of conversation and making new connections. He cleared his throat and, in his best self-assured manner, asked:

What are your expectations tonight? Do you have any guesses as to which house you’ll be sorted into?

He addressed neither of them in particular, simply putting the question out there.

While waiting, the boy noticed that the boat did not have paddles; none of them did. Although he had seen plenty of magic performed by his father, it was still not enough for him to grow used to it. It fascinated him every time he saw it. He was eager to see how the boats would operate with the aid of magic.

Electra's eyes lightened up at the question, and she straightened her back, her voice gaining some strength. She has thought about it quite a lot.

"Slytherin, definitely. Danae Mercier is my sister,in case either of you have heard about her? A star of the house according to the professors. You?"

Electra leaned back, crossing her legs. Turns out those fellow first years were much more friendly than she originally thought. She internally wished rhat they would be sorted together,so that she would have someone to talk to at the table without having to reach out to someone (or waiting for someone to do so) all over again.

She studied Simon. He was sitting as if he was preparing to bolt.
Poor Simon...he seems nervous,Electra pondered before realizing that staring at him with this dissecting look probably would not make it any better,so she quickly ripped her eyes away to turn to look at Penelope, and then at the castle which was appearing larger and larger as they approached.

Of course Danae had talked to her about it. Especially after her first year finished, she didn't seem to have any other topic of conversation. Electra was too young to actually comprehend the beauty back then, however now she could see that no words were enough to describe the beauty of the school.
