As the Craft family entered the shop in late August, they were welcomed by the smell of old books and dust. Some people may wrinkle their nose at the smell, but Amber loved it. She was also amazed at the quantity of books in the shop. They were everywhere: on the shelves, above the shelves, touching the ceiling, on the ground…
The little girl was transfixed, and despite the noise, only her father’s voice brought her back to reality.
“Come on, let’s find the books you need for school.”
Amber nodded and followed her father. List in hand, she enumerated out loud the titles of the books as the wizard guided them through the different alleys. The soon-to-become witch couldn’t help but smile or laugh at the titles of the books. It was so different from the maths, geography, science, or English textbooks she needed for her Muggle classes.
After a while, all the boxes on the list were ticked, and it was time to pay. As the start of the school year was close, lots of parents were buying the supplies needed for their children as well, and the queue to the till was long.
As she waited for what felt like an eternity (but was five minutes at most, really), Amber asked her parents if she could roam the aisles and look at the books. Her parents agreed, and the brown-haired girl started her exploration.
She walked, head tilted to the side, as she read the different titles when one of them caught her eye. The title was written in gold, and the book with a dark green cover was adorned with tiny figures akin to fairies or leprechauns. The golden letters spelt “Tales of fairies and other garden creatures”. Her eyes glimmered with sparks, and Amber ran back towards her parents, book in hand.
Margaret and John were only one person behind the checkout as their daughter came running.
“Please, please, can I have this book?”
“You don’t really need it Amber, we’re here to buy you school supplies.” Retorted her dad.
“But… I could read it on the train to Hogwarts! You said yourself that the train ride was very long!” Begged the little girl.
“You’re right… Okay, take it. But don’t read it before your journey to Hogwarts, I will not buy you another one.” Answered the wizard.
“I promise!” Said the girl with a huge smile.
“Okay, add it to the pile.” Her dad added with a chuckle.
Amber put her precious new book on top of the pile very carefully. After everything was paid for, Amber rapidly took her book in her arms, letting her parents deal with the huge pile of books alone. The three of them left the library with the ding of the bell, happy for one, and already exhausted by the start of this shopping session for the others.
