In the Shadow of the Sun

It was the first weekend of September—my first weekend at Hogwarts—and I was wandering the corridors alone. Although I had made two friends, I wasn't yet close enough to them to spend all my time in their company. Actually, that wasn't quite it; mostly, I was afraid of being a bother. I was the only girl in a group of boys, we didn't share the same interests, we came from different backgrounds—well, you get the idea. For the time being, I didn't want to cling to them; I was afraid I’d end up annoying them. I was walking through the corridors with my head down; hanging around my neck was a chain with a beautiful black rose pendant at the end. It was my very first Christmas gift—I received it shortly after my first birthday. I didn't wear it as a necklace when I was tiny, but once I turned five, I could. That pendant has never left my side since. I don't know why I cherish the necklace so much; some might say there’s nothing special about it, but to me, there is. It’s special because it was given with love, and it’s something I share with my mom—though hers features a cherry blossom instead. I’m very close to my mom, and the necklace makes me feel closer to her.
As I walked with my eyes cast downward, I didn't see the boy in front of me; I collided with him suddenly and fell hard to the ground.

In the Shadow of the Sun
“I am so bored…” I groaned, watching the clouds from a window in the hallway. Fresh out of detention for accidentally blowing up the Charms classroom. I wanted to fly again; how much would a broom cost? I’m a second year now and can own my own broom.
It was a whole other year until I could go to Hogsmeade. The smuggled goods and candy I buy from the older kids make it so much more worth it to go. And whatever Butterbeer was, I need it. Half of me wanted to see if there were secret ways to go to town.
I got lost in the clouds, and in my mind, when something small and soft rammed into my back, “Oof…” I turned around and saw some Ravenclaw girl sprawled out on the ground. “Damn, did my butt do that? Let me help,” I quickly said. I jumped down, helped her fix her robes, and lifted her to her feet. I quickly scrambled to grab her scroll, books and supplies. I dumped them into her bag and slung it over my shoulder.
“Are you hurt? Do you need me to take you to the Hospital Wing?” I asked her. I checked her over, didn’t see any serious injuries. “You ok? Sorry, I was lost in my head and didn’t see you.”

After crashing headfirst into the back of the boy in front of me, I fell to the ground. I was so ashamed…ashamed to have fallen in front of everyone. I didn't like being the center of attention, and at Hogwarts, between my fall and the painful scar, I wasn't exactly spoiled.
Before I could even get up, the boy I'd bumped into straightened my robes, helped me to my feet, gathered all my belongings, and stuffed them into my satchel, which he then slung over his shoulder.
He asked me if I was alright, looking at me with wide eyes, and offered to take me to the infirmary.
"I…no…thank you, I'm fine, just a little dizzy."
I couldn't manage to respond with the joy and enthusiasm a girl would have shown to a boy like him—that is to say, rather cute—my voice remained bored and cold. He asked me again if I was alright and apologized again.
"Don't apologize. It was me who wasn't looking where I was going... and yes, I'm fine, and you?"
Instinctively, I ran my hand over my scar. It ran across my entire face. It started at my forehead and split to cross my right eye and stop on my left cheek. It was swollen and painful, and above all, it reminded me that I would never be attractive to anyone.
