Whoever decided to let Philip Rosser moderate an official duel upon his first arrival at Hogwarts must have been out of their mind. This might sound a bit disrespectful, but oh great Merlin, Philip barely knew any spell! Granted, he had been actively learning about Duelling from various sources as soon as the arrangement was announced, but there was still a high chance that he would embarrass himself in front of the whole school - sorry, schools. Someone who hadn't even properly started his first year...! Was Duelling Captains actually a species near extinction?

Appalling. Philip thought as he made his way to the Duelling Stage. Just appalling. But still, what should be done must be done. There's no way of retreating now, and plus he had made lots of efforts for today already. Philip was not a fan of giving up, nor was he someone to put efforts in vain. He had been invited to moderate this duel, which meant he was capable of doing it, right?

Ascending - or rather jumping up to - the stage, Philip cleared his throat, trying to mimic how those mature upper years would speak. "Hello, everyone!" Oooh, quite a nice start. "Today, we welcome," Those who were actually paying attention would notice a small pause, which was because Philip was trying his best not to mix names up. He had been practicing over the past few days, so thankfully it sounded fine. "Verona Andréas and Luuk Tjin-A-Wing from Castelobruxo!" A seventh year and a fourth year. Scary. "As well as Akane Shimizu and Akari Kabukimono from Mahoutokoro!" A sixth and a third. Scary nonetheless. Surely, he wouldn't even know what spells they were casting - and now he regretted that he hadn't worked harder at home.

"You know the rules better than me." Maybe someone among the audience or the Duellists themselves would actually laugh at this comment, but he was being honest, and Philip couldn't care less. For now, the yet-to-start-school-first-year-who-has-no-business-modding-this-duel just wished to have it properly started (and hopefully finished).

A curt nod at the Duellists, Philip clapped his hands once as loudly as he could. "Ready, set, GO!"

Akane, formerly gold-robed (she was determined to regain them this upcoming year) had chosen what she had presumed to be the most orderly cabin, that of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. She missed her native school’s overarching sense of discipline and neatness.

It had taken a bit for the Japanese girl to adjust to her surroundings, this foreign school named after a pig with cosmetic difficulties - or multiple, as alluded to by the s at the end of Hogwarts. But that was besides the point. She was here for duels. Despite her long tenure on the Mahoutokoro dueling team and her current position as a senior duelist, interschool contests were not something she participated in often.

On this day, she was clad in navy, bearing only her cherry wand when she arrived to the piste. She tried to sort out her feelings regarding this duel upon seeing her fellow duelists. Firstly, her moderator was but a child, no older than twelve. She furrowed her brow, out of more concern than frustration. Was this school simply letting anyone be a dueling captain? Surely that would be dangerous, for both the kid and his team?

Akane was not very familiar with her partner, either. He was several - okay, admittedly only three - years younger than herself, and she briefly entertained a thought of worry about how they would fare in this duel before pushing it away. Spells, not concerns, had the most priority for a duel.

She gazed across the piste at the students from the South American school. One seemed to be around her partner’s age, perhaps a bit older, and Akane assumed the difference between other guy’s age and her own was also similar. The odds were not clearly stacked in their favor; after all, three plus six was less than four plus seven. Perhaps sheer willpower would get them through this duel. She wondered what her opponents were thinking; were they, too, stressing, or did their school's ethic entail having some kind of confidence no matter the situation?

Nerves, albeit excited nerves, began to set in; this was unusual for Akane, as the foundation of her existence was excellence. It was always humble acknowledgement of her excellence, of course. The only thing worse than losing a duel was gloating prior to it, then losing. She spared a glance at her partner. "Good luck, Kabukimono-san," she said, politely smiling. "Let's do our best." She wondered why Akira was not present at this year's summer camp duels. Despite the fact that her own presence was a rarity in these affairs, she was aware that her second cousin had attended a few. It would certainly be better to be dueling these foreigners with a familiar face by her side, regardless of the fact that Akira and her being approximately the same age and skill level would be helpful too. She sighed, reminding herself that it was just a duel, and she would probably not see the majority of those on the piste again for at least a year.

XXXIt was a strange, surreal feeling, stepping up to the piste for his very first official duel despite being a duellist since first year. On the bright side, he had plenty of unofficial experience.

XXXNeedless to say, it was confusing when he made eye contact with a boy even younger than himself. He almost did a double take, but kept his cool. Akari tried to release the nervous tension from his shoulders by taking in a deep breath and offering his senior duelling partner a bow.

XXX"Thank you, Shimizu-senpai," he answered quietly. "You as well." The year difference was a bit odd, but Castelobruxo looked to be facing the same problem as them. They were at a bit of a disadvantage, and he didn't feel entirely safe to be shouldering half the representation of all of Mahoutokoro. Worry crept through him, phrases he hadn't thought about for a long time. Everyone's watching. I'm not only in front of my school, but people from all the wizarding schools. His grasp on his wand-- his father's gift-- tightened.

XXXNo, he would be fine.

Time flies when you are not counting. It feels like just yesterday when the Brazilian boy went to Hogwarts, and now - here he is - back to Hogwarts again for Summer camp. In his cabin, which is the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, there was an array of students from various years. Not only that, when the boy was aware that he was the only International student in the cabin, he was not.

Some came from French and other magical schools. Albeit, it is mostly still occupied by Hogwarts students. But for the Ramírez boy, with different backgrounds and nationalities that are staying in the same cabin as him, Ronnie took it as an opportunity to make new connections and friends. And so, leading up to this day, the Duellist had joined some of the events that the organizer had set up.

He attended most of them. Emphasis on the most part. But if not, his cabin mates often see him sitting on one of those sofas, clutching a MAGIC (Magizoology Academy Global Institute Center) examination test module textbook, since the boy hopes to excel in the test and join the program abroad. But back to the task at hand.

Once Ronnie's and his partner's names were called upon the piste, Ronnie climbed the stairs and stood on the Castelobruxo's side of the platform. He looked at the game moderator, and he was kind of surprised that the Hogwarts Duelling captain was getting younger and younger every time he stood on the stage, which was not becoming an issue for the Seventh year.

What became a slight issue was his Duelling partner for this year's summer game. First of all, his partner was three or four years younger than him. Second of all, Ronnie did not know Luuk what's his-last-name is that well, not that the Brazilian boy was ignorant or something, maybe just a teeny tiny bit. And lastly, Ronnie did not know how good or bad Tjin-A-Wing's dueling expertise was.

The boy could only hope Tjin-A-Wing could hold his own in battle and did not expect the last-year student at Castelobruxo to carry all the weight between the two of them for this Duelling match. Then his blue-grey eyes landed on his opponent from the Mahoutokoro school. He took a deep breath, put his southpaw - since Ronnie is left-handed - Duelling stance on, and gripped his walnut wood wand tighter.

"Good luck," the boy speaks to his partner. "Do your best, and let's show them what we've got," he continued as his eyes focused on his opponent. He raised his wand and was ready to shoot out the first spell. Let the game begin!

The surrounding environment took some getting used to. It was his very first trip to Hogwarts, the wizarding school located in the Scottish Highlands — his very first trip anywhere, in fact — and wandering so far from the typical rainforest setting that he had secretly come to love over time was strange. There was a chill and lack of humidity in the climate that was offputting, a light summer breeze drifting by that was often absent in both Brazil and Suriname. The architecture was also awfully drab. The green and golden hues that were constants in Castelobruxo were absent, with greys and browns dominating the antiquated castle. The walls seemed infinitely more constricting; they were shaped to be square and structured, seeming so artificially constructed, systemic.

The physically structured and limiting nature of the school's appearance perhaps contributed to the boy's nerves as he stepped onto the duelling piste. It was his very first time duelling internationally, and many of the individuals situated in the clearing seemed to be older than him, thus having garnered more experience and possessing a much higher magical capacity. He had also not been truly exposed to magic until 4 years ago while some grew up around it, giving them another advantage at least in knowledge. No assumptions could be made of the upbringings of his opponents or his partner, however. Perhaps they, too, had grown up around Muggles — or people whom they perceived to be Muggles.

His duelling partner towered several heads over him 35ish cm yikes. It must have seemed comical to have the two paired together, for Luuk had to tilt his head upward by quite a ridiculous amount to meet the older boy's eyes. It was fortunate, then, that he held an aversion to eye contact; else, the constant straining would have hurt his neck. "Good luck," he replied while nodding in the boy's direction. His Portuguese was far from fluent — rudimentary, in fact — but those two words were very much within his vocabulary, for they were said so frequently. So much so that the luck was insufficient to go around. Luck was a concept that had become so exhausted. Despite the brief exchange, the distrust dwelling within the older boy's eyes were crystal clear; he clearly disliked being placed with somebody so much younger, and no effort was made to obscure it.

Luuk paid it no mind; he was accustomed to being looked down upon, both physically and metaphorically. As he drew his wand — 28,4, chestnut, white river monster spine — he found a strange determination settling to overtake the initial nerves. It was not necessarily a determination for victory, but rather a determination to be better. Duelling was one of the few places where Luuk felt he could feel untethered — where he could, ironically, let down the steel guard that he usually kept before him and simply let the magic fly. The duelling piste was a place built entirely off of concentration, skill, and reflex; it was a controlled, moderated environment that seemed to provide more comfort than the outside world. Though luck was not usually on his side, he would give it his all and prove to his senior that he was not incompetent.

Oh great Merlin, this was exciting! It looked like all four on the piste decided to go aggressive, and almost immediately started to throw spells at each other. While his Wise Duelling Captain Mentor Fawkes - from whom he got most of his modding knowledge - had never mentioned that one should commentate when they mod a match, Philip found himself uncontrollably starting to yell like a fanatic sports fan.

"First, we have Andréas...woahhhh!!" He was a little over the top, but this was the first time he had witnessed someone wielding a spell combatively. "A..." Merlin, what's that spell's name again? Philip was pretty sure he knew this one - oh, right. "...Knockback Jinx!" Picking the youngest Mahoutokoro as his target, Verona's Flipendo flew towards Akari, yet the latter stepped out of its way at the last minute. "Ahhhhh that was close!"

In the meantime, Luuk selected a much different spell. Philip watched in awe as he skilfully cast a Blindfolding Spell at Akane, which he swore the black fabric nearly slapped itself onto the older girl's eyes - but Akane was simply quicker. "Aaaaand that's an eye patch from Tjin-A-Wing! No, applause to Shimizu-san, you all!" The formal address slipped out of his mouth naturally before he could even realise, having had a conversation and learnt quite a lot from her a few days earlier.

Oh yes, Akane was truly an admirable Duellist - Philip's mouth dropped into a small "o" as her spell split into two, veering their ways respectively towards the two Castelobruxo students. "That's remarkable - oooooh!!" He might have yelled a little too excitedly, but Verona was simply too slippery to catch. The eldest Duellist seemed to have sensed the coming danger and refusing to let that Obscuro blind him of his bright future, swiftly and gracefully evading the spell. As for Luuk - he stepped out of the way at the last instant, an exact recurrence of how Akane dodged his own one. Philip's eyes widened, totally amazed by the situation.

He turned his hopeful eyes to Akari, who seemed to have an extra powerful wand - Philip was pretty sure that the spell nearly blew up and caught its own caster, but in the end it smoothly found its way towards Verona. "And we have Kabukimonoooooo!! - never mind." Verona proved his abilities as the probably most tenured Duellist here, and dodged the incoming spell again pretty easily.

Philip took a second to realise that this was the end of the first exchange of spells, all four Duellists standing on the Duelling Stage completely unscathed. Suddenly he got very confused - and suspicious. Are duels supposed to be like this? Like everybody had to play nice and flick your wrist just a little harder to gallantly miss your target by a centimetre to show your etiquette and courtesy? Apparently, those who taught him about the 101 of Duelling hadn't mentioned this. He pouted at their secrecy. Hey you, don't kid a kid!!

Ronnie missed the time where Cash — Cassandra Ironwoods, his cousin — were in their prime. From the grapevine that he once heard, every time the Hogwartian modded a match — be it official or unofficial — Cash always had a flair for the dramatics. A little Fumos here or a little Purple-Cracker Jinx there.

The boy always got a little bit confused about how Hogwarts selects its Duelling Captain and Co-Captains. Take his cousin as an example. Cash is a Quidditch player, and yet somehow they managed to snatch one of the Co-Captain positions for their house back when Cash was a fourth year. Or so he had been told by the green eyes themselves.

And now, the confusion of the Brazilian boy only grew as the moderator for this match was barely a teen himself. Isn't there a rule of thumb that, to be able to bear the title of one's Duelling Captain or Co-Captain, house representation must have experience for it? Even just a teeny tiny bit? And what did the boy that is Ronnie's moderator know about Duelling?

But that's beside the point. Once all the Duellists stood on their respective side of the piste and the cheer of the crowd died down, there was an awkward pause that fell between the Duellists. The moderator did not give any signal or anything that the match had started. That shows how green incompetent and young he is.

"Can we— I—" Ronnie stammered out of confusion at the lack of action between the Duellists. And so, when no one raised or moved their wand, the Seventh year was the first one that showed the young Duellists how it's done. "Flipendo!" the Ramírez boy exclaimed as he raised his wand and directed it at Akari Kabukimono.

Though Ronnie's aim was true, it did not hit his intended target. "Darn!" The boy protested to himself in Spanish, but loud enough for his Duelling partner to hear it. Then a simultaneous incantation of two different spells was incanted toward him. One is Obscuro by Akane Shimizu. The other one is the Dancing-Feet spell by the same person Ronnie intended to shoot his Flipendo at,

The black fabric that shot out from Shimizu's wand; Ronnie dodged it easily, as did the spell that was aiming at his feet. "Ha!"The Seventh year taunt the Mahoutokoro students with his annoying triumphant smirk etched on his face, pettily. Try again, will you?. Ronnie's blue-grey eyes for a split second landed briefly on Tjin-A-Wing as he shot his spell toward Shimizu and successfully dodged Shimizu's spell at him.

"Great work, chico dude/mate"The eldest Duellist complimented his partner. Ronnie felt the need and responsibility to give Tjin-A-Wing a little bit of encouragement, although the other boy did not ask him for it. But still, Ronnie gave him anyway.

It took roughly a blink or two's time for the Shimizu heir to reason out that the boy who was overseeing her duel was the very one who had approached her some days earlier to learn more about the sport. Thankfully, her appreciation of Philip's enthusiasm towards dueling and her concern at Hogwarts's lack of readily available and experienced duelists were not mutually exclusive feelings.

Another blink. A moment of blindness. A shortened version of what her opponents would face, if her actions went according to plan. "Obscuro," she incanted clearly. She willed the spell to conjure up two identical dark ribbons, which twirled through the air- an aggressive first move, but a bit slow, perhaps. She missed Andréas with enough space between the spell and the boy to fit the two oceans which she had travelled across to arrive at the Scottish highlands. A glance in the younger of the two Castelobruxo duelists's direction would show that he just barely slipped out of the way. A shame, she thought. Controlling the direction of a split spell would be near the top of her list of skills to refine.

She paid no heed to Andréas's taunt, except for a momentary furrow of her brows. She was not usually one to waste her breath on such trivial matters. Her attention was set on sidestepping Tjin-A-Wing's blindfolding spell sent her way. She frowned once more as the fabric whipped past her head, much too close for her liking. Next time, she would try to be more cautious.

It was a round of misses; it seemed that Kabukimono's spell had also missed, as well as the one intended for him. However, to Akane, it was too early to tell if all four duelists not having a single scratch on them was a good or bad sign, and for now, she would just stay alert and ready for whatever the rest of the duel would come to.

XXXAkari and the seventh year from Castelobruxo locked onto each other the moment the duel started, exchanging spells. He narrowly ducked her Knockback Jinx, but it caused his spell to fly pretty far off. Whoops. Akane didn't seem to be having the best time either, a Blindfolding Spell grazing past while her own-- split into two?? Akari watched, amazed, as the spell separated and went for both of their opponents. Sadly, they both missed, but that was an incredible feat of magic. Could he learn that?

XXXThe duelling captain looked as excited as he was, shouting his commentary with a lot of enthusiasm. Akari hid a giggle. It was adorable! On the other hand, Verona taunted his partner after dodging Akane's spell, which was not very cool.

XXXSure, it was impressive to dodge two spells at once, but mocking your fellow duellers? Imagine not being able to hit a boy four years younger than you, he thought absentmindedly before batting it away. To be honest, both Castelobruxo duellers appeared very nimble, whereas Akari and Akane had only barely dodged their attacks. It was more than a little intimidating. His gaze searched the audience. Hikari was here, wasn't he?

Upon the duel’s commencement, Luuk sent a blindfolding spell toward the older girl in the hopes of diminishing her casting abilities. He held the reasonable suspicion that the older one was, the more experience one has — and thus, would possess more skill. The girl was unfortunately able to dodge, though it was so close that the fabric seemed to graze her face.

He was right in thinking she was skilled; the spell that the Mahoutokoro girl cast split into two, meaning that a spell meant for Verona came toward him as well. It was unexpected, but the boy was able to jump out of the way just in time, though it too, like his own spell, missed by a single hair.

To the onlooker, the duel would seem as though a whole lot of nothingness; nobody was getting hit. But to him, this was a game he could play all day — a game of raw evasion and nimble fluidity. The only slightly irritating aspect was the moderator’s annoyingly over-excited voice. Though Luuk’s english was by no means exemplary, the drawn out syllables still sounded awfully vexing.

The Surinamese boy blinked and tilted his head upward slightly when the Castelobruxo seventh year uttered words of encouragement. He had not expected it from somebody who had seemed to hold so much contempt just a few moments ago; it was suspicious, for what were the senior’s intentions? Perhaps he was attempting to manipulate him.
