From the day Violette had received the Abraxan feather, decorated by golden letters spelling out 'Beauxbatons', she knew her fate had changed. No longer did she have to stay at home and fight her parents all day. She could now go to a prestigious French academy, surrounded by other elegant people, and live out the life of her dreams.

The girl had one goal: to be the most popular girl in all of Beauxbatons. The blondine was not delusional however. Goals took time to reach. For now, her sub-goal was to be the most popular girl in her year. Piece of cake.

She was well prepared. While she would never admit this, she had done a ton of research about the academy beforehand. She had bought all necessary supplies, and mostly knew what to expect. As an example, young Violette knew beforehand that she would enroll in music classes to practice piano. Even this she had prepared for. The past few weekends, she had been going over to her friend's house to practice piano there, while her friend had Bijou rights. Bijou got cuddled, and Violette got to practice. Win-win.

The castle, Violette knew, was supposed to be absolutely breahtaking and regal. It was only fitting for Violette to match these looks. Therefore, the girl had gotten up early in the morning to prepare. Her magical suitcases were packed, but she still had a lot to do. After a hour-long shower, Violette spent another hour doing her hair. Her blonde hair was curled in loose curls looking effortless and perfect. She had put on some light make-up: she brushed up her eyebrows, wore concealer, curled her lashes before putting on mascara, and put on some plumping semi-clear lip gloss. Her ears were decorated with simple medium-sized golden hoops. Lastly, her uniform was ironed and proper. She had cleverly rolled up the pleated skirt at the top, so her alterations looked invisible yet it fell just above her knees rather than below them. When asked about it, the young seer planned to shrug and blame it on the fact that she was probably just tall. Her second-hand dark brown leather shoes were oiled, now looking brand new.

"I look perfect.", she said after taking one last look in the mirror. Her family was still resting but Violette left anyway, taking her trunk and her cat, Bijou, with her.

After she had used the Abraxan feather to access the meeting place, Violette finally made it to the castle. It looked beautiful, seemingly built into the mountains. It took a lot of mental effort to not gawk at the place. She must look indifferent, as she trained herself to.

"Regal and chique. I wouldn't settle for less.", she said aloud, hoping that students surrounding her would hear her and be impressed by the casual way she addressed the mesmerizing castle. It was time for her to take the first step towards her goal: popularity.

Alejandros didn't know how to feel about starting at Beauxbatons, so like most things in his life, he had decided to feel anxious. His Abraxan feather had turned into a sad-looking thing, wrung out by his sweaty palms and tight grip. Worse, he'd noticed the skin of his palms turning purple and scaly while his mamá fussed over him and his father stared on a metre away, arms behind his back, eyes sharp as always. He must look silly in his uniform, even though it had been fitted to perfection. Small and stupid. Still not able to stop himself from shapeshifting with his emotions. When he noticed his father's gaze dropping to his hands, the changes only creeping further every time he spared a worried glance, he was quick to tuck them behind his back. Copied posture. His throat bobbed when he tried to meet his father's eyes.

Starting school could be exciting. There were so many interesting things to learn and people to meet, and he'd get to spend as much time as he wanted with Rina without their fathers around. But there was so much he could mess up. This feather had come to him, but what if he didn't deserve it? What if he was the worst wizard to ever bear the Espinosa name? He couldn't know yet, but it didn't seem like any wild guess to say he might be terrible at magic. He was sort of terrible at a lot of things.

Te amo, Ros. I love you He looked at his mamá again, her small, bright smile. She adjusted his collar and smoothed back some of his curls. —Espero que lo disfrutes. I hope you enjoy it

He looked to his father one last time, because he thought it would be wrong not to. They were family, too. And maybe he would say something loving, like he used to before bed when Alejandros was really little, since he was leaving for so long. Now would be the time. Alejandros waited for those dark eyes to soften, but all he got was a firm nod. It might have said don't disappoint me. Blinking rapidly, he tried to smile at his mamá. —Adiós—he whispered, an embarrassing squeak, then turned on his heel to let the feather do its work. He was glad he had hugged her earlier.

Alejandros managed to calm down enough by the time he got to the school for his hands to look normal and the newly orange tips of his curls to fade out. He also managed not to cry. Now he was on the lookout for Rina, but found himself unmistakably distracted by the castle coming into view. He was a lover of old architecture, the stunning spires and arches that had stood the test of time, a different kind of art. The way the years eroded, though the Beauxbatons Academy of Magic stood tall and proud, shored up by magic and care. In front of it, he felt small. That didn't feel like such a bad thing, like this.

He was very much gawking. The white stone gleamed, cloud-like and ethereal between the mountains. The bridge wove a magnificent tapestry of silver and gold. It all shone and it loomed, and... was regal and chique? Not his words, but he supposed so. The words belonged to a girl. She was pretty, put-together, possibly also a first year, and very French. She looked more relaxed than he had probably ever been, like the castle didn't make her feel small at all. Like she already fit. He didn't know what to say, and thought she wouldn't want him to say anything, so he didn't, but he would smile if she looked his way. Uneasily, without teeth. His hands had gone the tiniest bit purple again, just in the center of his palms, and with them pressed against the tails of his coat, he hadn't yet noticed.

Ever since I set my hair on fire at the age of 4, I’d always been expected to attend Durmstrang or Koldovstoretz, most certainly not Beaubâtons. Everything changed when we moved here. I hadn’t discussed it with my parent. I guess I was expecting, maybe even hoping, to still go to one of the other schools. It was an understatement to say that I was surprised when I received an Abraxan feather instead of being revisited by the recruiter from Koldovstoretz.

My feelings about boarding school were mixed. On one hand I’m glad to be away from her mother’s controlling hand, on the other I miss the familiarity of their house and the people in it. Most of all, I missed Ana. At school, I would know nobody. Well, nobody other than Sasha who would obviously do fine on his own.

When the day the came, I was up early. From the moment I opened my eyes I felt a little ball of dread sitting in the base of my stomach. No doubt that it would grow bigger as the day went on.

My primary concern in the moment was appearances. Everything had to look perfect, if only for the first day. I had curled my hair the night before and it now fell in waves down my back, held out of my face by the Beauxbâtons hat. The rest of my baby blue uniform was crisp and tidy. That should be enough to make a good impression, right? Now all she needed was to smile. I practiced a few times in the mirror but gave up, I’d already done enough.

I took a sharp breath upon seeing the castle. Holy crap! I’d expected it to be huge but never would I have imagined it to be so… expensive? The whole building was a blinding white. It seemed as though this building should belong to the gods rather than us.

While most of us stood gawking, one girl spoke up. “I wouldn’t settle for less.” the voice in my head mimicked. Where did she come from? I mean, I would have been thoroughly disappointed if the building was ugly, too, but did she have to sound so pretentious?

I turned to look at her, we looked surprisingly similar. “I’m sure none of us would,” I replied. Okay, perhaps I should try making friends before making enemies so I added, “Do you see such structures frequently?” Small talk was a very useless way to pass time that I’ve become well versed in.
