Two years since starting at Hogwarts and Josh was finally participating in a duel for the first time ever. He didn't even care that it was an unofficial duel, a duel was a duel in his eyes - so long as it meant not dying or losing an eye or limb. He entered the duelling club feeling sort of mixed emotions; excited, nervous, confident and of course determined to win. The moderator, a fifth year Gryffindor named Lily, actually seemed happy to have participants when he asked if he could join in. His partner was a fellow Ravenclaw in his year, Millie. He saw her around the common room a few times, knew her name and all but never interacted with her up to this point. He gave her a reassuring nod as he took position beside her, to signal he was ready to do this. He looked at his opponents, a Slytherin in his year apparently named Lauren, and a first year Gryffindor named Lucian. There was something about Lauren that gave him chilling vibes, something about the aura she was giving off that made him feel weird... He wasn't going to let his guard down duelling Lucian, a year younger than him. From the few duels he had spectated, he learned that younger did not at all mean less dangerous, in some cases it meant more dangerous. "No cheating, be nice to each other, and may the best team win!" He raised his wand after Lily finished speaking, and whispered to Millie, "Okay, let's do this."

─────Here was Lucian in another unofficial duel. This time with a teammate. Last time he was alone. However, he hoped that the results were different. He looked at the two Ravenclaw students and ugh Lily, the girl that attacked him the other day and led him into Detention. He glanced and saw his own teammate. He hoped that they could over power the other two and win this duel. He was sure nothing else would come out of it, except him getting better at duelling. He wanted to learn how to win duels and what to do to achieve his goal.

He looked at others around him and then his teammate and gave her a thumbs up. He wanted his team to do well and nothing else mattered to the boy. He wanted to win. And he'd be willing to do anything to win. He might be the youngest of all but that didn't bother him one bit. Him being youngest wasn't going to keep him from beating the other team at all. He wanted his team to do well and win. He knew he had it in him to duel. He had taken part in other duels and had done quite well.

𝕿here were more efficient ways to spend one's day than to participate in an unofficial duel. Anyone would've thought that Lauren Loratrix Vanes would have learned her lesson after a catastrophic unofficial quidditch match, where her team captain was knocked out on round one and one of her team members had had to share a broom with her. Who was that? She forgot; she should've known that allegiances wouldn't last long in sports, and especially not unofficial ones. People played dirty, and 'unfair' had been one way to describe how seventh years were allowed to play against first years, despite the fact that they possessed vastly more experience.

Life was never fair. And yet, despite that knowledge, Lauren still found herself heading towards the duelling club. Why had she made such a foolish decision? Perhaps it was because duelling and Quidditch were different sports altogether; they had different strategies, different available actions, and basically the whole game was different. Not even her stupid aunt Loratrix could fail to see the difference between Duelling and Quidditch, which might just have been the reason why despite everything, she was still opening the door, taking out her wand, and glancing around the room at the four different individuals who had been there already.

Firstly, Lily. The moderator of the duel, a fifth or sixth year, by the looks of it. She dipped her head to the older girl, and decided that since she was going to determine whether her team was victorious or not, she might as well act nice to her to get on her right side. Then, Lucian. She doubted that she'd seen him before, but since he was on her team, she guessed that it wouldn't be too late to start socialising. She greeted him with a respectful nod as she continued on the next person. Josh Ericson -- she had probably seen him once or twice in classes, given that they were on the same year, but wasn't quite sure. Her lips were pursed as she looked at the final individual. Millie Ann. The girl who had caught her sneaking out after the curfew, stood up for the rules like a stupid machine, and made the Slytherin push her in. Given that she was to play against the Ravenclaw, Lauren decided that she wouldn't want to be wearing her shoes when the duel started.

She was going to win. Her team was the best team, and mainly because it didn't consist of rule-sticklers.

Round one ended up not having not such a bad result, but the odds could have been more ideal. Millie managed to hit Lucian with Rictusempra, at least she had good aim. Josh's Obscuro missed Lauren so badly it was actually embarrassing. Maybe it was a little stupid to sign up for a duel without any practice, his aim just proved his own point. He didn't even want to think about how bad he would be at dodging attacks, but thankfully he didn't have to worry. Both Lauren and Lucian targeted Millie with Flipendo and thankfully they both missed. He could only imagine how painful it would be to be hit with two Knockback Jinxes at the same time. Josh was hardly one to give up, his pathetic aim on his first spell made him even more determined to put up a bigger fight. He needed to get his head into the game, genuinely if it wasn't for Millie they would have faced a stalemate first round - they even might've been the one's disadvantaged. He raised his wand with more confidence this time, the gaze in his eyes turning from determined to calculated. Hopefully this time he would hit his target and not the wall.

𝕳ow dared the Ravenclaw rule-stickler fire any spell at Lucian -- and the Tickling Charm, no less. She wanted to punch her in the face, or hold her over an open window as a threat so that she wouldn't dare harm anyone of her team again. Unfortunately, she doubted that Ms. Fifth Year would approve, and since the Slytherin didn't want to get on the Gryffindor's bad side, she let the matter drop. McCoire was moderating the duel, after all, and she didn't want the spells she had casted to be judged unfairly. The fate of the game was on her hands. It was always on her hands.

As she cast her Knockback Jinx, the blonde half expected Ann to hit the wall and/or lose her consciousness. She hoped that the spell had been powerful enough to knock her out, and in the most painful way possible. How she hated her for catching her lurking around that night; the Ravenclaw would pay dearly for it. The young Vanes just hoped that she would have learned her lesson and stopped messing around with someone who could fight back. She remembered the old saying, 'Don't play games with a girl who can play better.'

That was it. Millie Ann would have to learn that, someday. The Slytherin was just doing her a favour so that the lesson would appeal to her sooner rather than later. Unfortunately, Millie must have had been hyper-aware that she were to have her revenge, because she had evaded her spell expertly, and the wall had hit her blow instead. She seethed even harder as Lucian's Flipendo had also been evaded -- since when had she grown to become such an expert in this matter?

It had been true that Lauren had had secretly plotted with Lucian to cast double Knockback Jinxes on Millie, so the Ravenclaw's supreme evasion had hit Lauren harder than the spells did on the wall, or so she believed.

───── "Flipendo!!" He cast the spell hoping it would land on his target but it missed. However he was hit by a spell. He didn't have enough time to dodge. He was happy that his partner was not hit. They were still in the game. They had to just focus more and be ready for the spells. At least he had to be ready for the spell. He couldn't be distracted anymore. He didn't want to think about anyone else except this duel in hand. Gripping his wand, he stood up. Ready for what was to come next. He was ready for the next round.

He was thinking of what he would be doing in the next round when it would be his turn to cast a spell. He was not going to reveal it or let the other team know what his plans were. He was intending on keeping them secret. He didn't want them to be out in the open so the other team had an advantage over them. He shook his head and looked at his partner. He was ready for the next round. He sent her a thumbs up and encouraged her. "We've got this." He said smiling to her.
