To answer your poll in a nutshell: No. Duelling is not only limited to second years and above. In your House Dormitory -the OOC Room- there should be a sports roster which you can sign your character up for. There likely is a waitlist but we always recommend that you apply! I've included our Duelling System Post that explains all the duelling rules and how we play! You should also check out the RPG Requests forum to see if anyone is looking for volunteers for Unofficial Duels which you do NOT need to be part of a team to participate in.

The only requisite for brand new players to be a part of the Official House Duelling teams, is that you must have 2 Duelling Spells in your trunk and one must be labeled an "Attack" spell. Examples for Attack spells that first years like yourself usual have would be, "Curse of the Bogies," "The Dancing Feet Spell" or "The Knockback Jinx."

Spells (and House points for your current school year) can be obtained for free via completing Homework or you can buy spells by visiting the Fifth Floor of the castle and buying spells out of the forums. Some spells do have pre-requisites such as Incendio Duo which requires you to be a Second Year and have the regular Incendio spell.
