Simply thinking about the fact that, out of all places, the library would turn into Juah's favourite at Hogwarts was absurd. Endless rows of books filling the place, students who were studying quietly and the familiar smell that reminded him so much of his father's mansion in England, not his cozy home in Ledbury or Finland. God knows how many hours of his life the boy has spent in that massive library, locking himself away from whatever visitors his father had invited over. Juah must've known at least half of the books anyone had to offer at this point. Reading was comforting in ways many people couldn't relate to, unless they've experienced it themselves. It served not only to satisfy the thirst for knowledge, but rather to live a thousand different lives through the imagination alone when reality became unbearable or simply too boring.
The time at Hogwarts had been, more or less, uneventful recently. It had been less than a week since the new first years had arrived at the wizarding school and were sorted into their houses. Juah could still remember his own first days well and he was, yet again, deeply astonished by how fast time had passed. If one had reminded him that he was already a second year, he would've been sure he wasn't. Up to this day, he sometimes managed to get lost. Today, he had gotten lost yet again, or rather, had tried and failed. The only lost thing today was his concentration. By now, the path that came to him the most naturally brought him between the bookshelves, but the book he had opened in his lap couldn't seem to take his mind to a different galaxy. The words that would normally paint a picture of worlds and another sort of magic in his head swirled before his eyes and with a sigh, he noticed that he had been reading the same paragraph over and over again. What a waste of time. He rubbed a hand over his face, trying to focus. Knowing himself, he had deliberately chosen to sit in an armchair that stood slightly more secluded from the rest, but not even that seemed to help today. Maybe it was simply too busy, or there was too much on his mind.
Not even Juah could force imagination, so he closed the book gently, keeping one finger inside as a bookmark, and simply stared at the students with an unreadable expression, watching them pluck books from the shelves and study. It was calming to know that all of those people had individual lives, minds and thoughts, things to keep them busy with, things that made them insecure and unsure. That each one of them was looking for a way to pass the time, to waste it or to make the best of it. Who knew if in the end, everything or nothing of today would matter?

Guess who finally found the library and had time, I'm so sorry for having you wait this long!

| ————— | Entering the library seemed to be the safest place to stay in. Or at least, in Marigold's case, that's what she thought herself as she quietly padded her way down the halls and tall, dusty shelves surrounding the entirety of the room. For now, she had no intention of returning to the common room just yet, especially after what just happened to her first Flying class earlier. That lesson was eventful in the worst way possible and she'd rather much bury the memory six-feet down beneath the Forbidden Forest. Also, she isn't ready yet to be confronted with the inquisitions about how her Flying class went. If someone probably asked her if she enjoyed the class, the only word she can probably answer would be 'No, thank you for asking,' and rush off to escape the conversation. At least, that's how she imagined it. She needed something to distract herself. And books were definitely a good distraction. The library in the castle was something that Mari absolutely adored as much as she does the Ravenclaw's common room. The scent of the parchment and old pages greet her with familiar warmth, and it kind of helped her to gradually relax. After all, in the library, no one will expect her to fly or impress anyone. And the book pages will definitely not laugh at her expense as she quietly read its content. With that thought, she quietly wandered around between shelves, her fingers running lightly along the dust and book spines as she searched for something... or anything, really, that can successfully help in occupying her mind. Herbology-related texts, maybe. Or perhaps, about the magical creatures existing around. Or maybe just random text that is completely unrelated to magic. Just as her eyes locked over a book with title in relation to potions and its magical ingredients, she approached and stood on her tiptoes, reaching out for a book with slight difficulty. Being small really has its problems. As she managed to snag the edge of the spine and successfully manage to grab it, she turned, about to search for some table to occupy for some light reading but her feet halted on its place as her hazel eyes met that of a pair of brown irises. She blinked for a good few seconds, a bit dumbfounded, before she cluelessly looked around from her left, behind, and right direction, checking if there's someone around her that the boy might be staring at. Seeing no one around her, she hesitantly looked back again, her cluelessness turning into confusion as she now stared back at the blonde boy who was seated in an armchair across the aisle, a book on his lap though it doesn't seem to be like he was reading it. He was just sitting there... gaze seemingly settled somewhere around where she is—at least that's what she thought about what's going on. Wait... is he really staring at me? But why? With eyes blinking rapidly and... quite awkwardly, might she add, she looked down on her clothes, finding no dirt around. Then her free hand moved to touch her face. Is there some dirt in my face? |

At some point of him sitting there, a young girl started reaching for a book far up a shelf she was clearly too small to reach. Just as Juah thought about getting up to offer some help, she managed to grab it and drag it down into her arms. Some problems simply dissolved on their own if a person had enough commitment to push through. His attention got lost somewhere after that and he started to dissociate, staring off at nothing in particular, vaguely still in her direction.
His eyes were only drawn back to her as she moved again, looking around the library, obviously a little nervous, and then looking at him again before checking her clothes and face with rushed movements. It took him a few seconds to understand what was likely happening inside her head. Oh dear. That had not been his intention. Looking at it from an outside perspective, it all made unfortunate sense. It must've appeared like he had been watching her, which, honestly, wasn't exactly wrong, and staring directly at her for several minutes, not through her. He hadn't even noticed. Well, this is awkward, he thought. Seeing how uncomfortable he had made her, he couldn't just simply avert his gaze and pretend it had never happened. The poor girl already looked like she was having a crisis, and not clarifying the situation might result in her feeling judged, or, worse, insecure because of him and a misunderstanding.
Making his mind up, he checked the page he was on, made a mental note on it, closed the book entirely and placed it on a table before him. Then, he took a step forward and meeting her eyes again with a warm and slightly apologetic smile, clearing his throat before speaking as quietly as he could manage to not disturb the peace in the library, yet loud enough for her to hear and understand his words properly. "Hi, sorry. If you're worried that something's wrong with your appearance, you're fine," he said, hinting at her self-conscious behaviour. The situation was a little bit strange, and he had to admit that his staring had already caused more problems in his life than it had any right to. It was such a simple, insignificant habit, but when people feel perceived, they tend to get quite defensive and sometimes even aggressive. "I wasn't really watching anyone in particular. But I probably looked at you long enough to make it seem like I was deliberately watching you, so I'm sorry if that was uncanny and made you feel scrutinized and uncomfortable."
He let his eyes fall to the book in her hands to give her a break from being perceived, his mouth settling into a neutral line as he thought about how to continue this conversation without making it weird for her. A proper introduction would likely make the most sense. "I'm Juah, by the way. Are you looking for a place to sit, or do you plan on taking the book with you?"

| ————— | For quite a few seconds, Marigold could only stare at him the moment that he approached, a light-pink shade dusting her cheeks slowly. Well, for one, she was relieved that it's not what like she was thinking of and that there is nothing on her face or her clothes at all. Though it was mortifying enough that she ended up checking herself out too obviously in front of him, she was quite thankful too that she didn't move at all even if she nearly backed away when he actually stood up and walked towards her due to panic. Absolutely brilliant... another embarrassment to add. It was an absurd thought, but she can't deny at all. And it was just the first week! "It's, uhm... it's alright," her hushed voice stammered quickly, much too quicker than she had intended to do. "I mean—you didn't—err, well... I suppose you did stare... but, uhm not in... not in a terrible way... I think." She clutched the book she was holding tightly as if it could help shield her from her messy stuttering. "I mean... there are terrible ways to stare—uhm, probably... there are. B-But you said you weren't doing it on purpose, so... uhm..." she had to hid a wince at how it made everything sound even worse. "I'm sorry, I'll... stop talking..." I should crawl underneath a table or somewhere and stay there until I graduate, she thought to herself mournfully, overdramatic in a way, but with how many embarrassing moment she had managed to accumulate in just the first week, she just wanted to dug a hole and hide there. Her eyes cautiously glanced at him before looking away again. She even barely managed to look at his face clearly. She was that nervous in front of him that she barely remembered his name. What was it again? June? Jurah? Juah? "Uhm... I'm... Marigold," she said, quieter this time after her nonsense rambling, introducing herself politely in response to his introduction. "Just... Mari, if it's, uhm, a bit long..." Her hazel eyes flickered over the empty tables behind him, her grip on the book slightly tightening. Right... she's here to read, not to do another embarrassment. "I'm... uhm... looking for a place to sit... and... read this," she answered his question quietly, looking down at the book in her arms. There are plenty tables to sit on to, but after accidentally making eye contact with someone for several minutes, every available seat seemed to have been strangely intimidating to her. "I... don't want to go back yet... so... uhm," she hesitated. "N-Nice to meet you..." |

He hadn't what? Stared in a terrible way? Did people usually stare at her that way? Oh gods, this was, well, awkward. Juah scratched the back of his head, listening to her rambling while fighting an inner battle against the situation. On one hand, this was somehow a tiny bit amusing, but then again, the girl looked way too lost and nervous to be laughed at. His gaze was soft and the smile he offered gentle. "No, no, it's fine, you can talk as much as you want. If you want, that is." When she continued speaking to introduce herself, it was so quiet that he almost didn't catch it properly. "Marigold?" He repeated, a little unsure. If he got it wrong, he wasn't so sure whether she would correct him or not, but he still wanted to give her the option to check. Or the abbreviation 'Mari' would have to do. "Like the flower? I think I can remember that."
Sometimes, new people could be intimidating enough to make evry interaction feel unbearable, especially in such a new place. In some ways, she reminded him of his own younger self, hiding in his father's library, waiting for the guests to leave the house again. What he would've given for a familiar, kind face showing up consistently as a source of comfort. The same went for his first year at Hogwarts. Well, he certainly wasn't going to make this any worse for her, so he nodded and glanced at the book she had picked and pointed towards the table he had chosen, with an empty armchair near his own. "Potions? You like that subject?" He asked before adding, "if you want, you can come sit with me over here. It's a pretty quiet corner, so you shouldn't be bothered by anything or anyone. And I make a pretty decent distraction, person to talk to or to stay entirely quiet if you don't feel like making conversation."
To be honest, he was rather curious about what was going on inside Mari's head, but he swallowed down the questions to not make her even more uncomfortable. Had she said she didn't want to go back yet? Back where? Was she okay? Well, hardly, the girl was clearly all nerves. "That's fine," he answered instead, "you can technically stay here until the libary closes and curfew starts. That's when you likely want to be back in your common room to avoid detention in your first weeks. Doesn't make the best impression." With a subtle wink, he thought about the statement. As if a girl like her would break the rules that early, he mused in his head, hiding a smile behind a hand and a clearing of his throat to focus again. "But for now, feel free to take all the time you need, yes? There are many pages and potions waiting to be discovered by you in peace. Come on, then. Plenty of room for you."
He didn't glance over his shoulder while walking back to his own armchair, sitting down with crossed ankles and picking the book back up. With that, he wanted to give Marigold as much space as she needed as he wanted her to feel less like a specimen in a petri dish. Still, he hoped that he had estimated the situation correctly and had come across as calming and safe enough to sit with rather than her pulling away. Problems always seemed much smaller when there was someone to share them with after all.
