Guess What Lies Ahead, Only One Way to Find Out! Avis

Avis caught Dennis by surprise as Professor Kāne let class out. He had been he one to challenge her and therefore, he thought, erroneously, that she would let him set the starting line! How wrong he was as she not only bolted toward the door but also taunted him on the way out! He wasn’t about to let her get the best of him! Out the door he ran and before he knew it, he was gaining on the nimble second year as she darted to and fro around students. It was a wonder she was in Ravenclaw with how much like a snake Dennis thought she resembled!

Avis however, met her match. Whether it was from her school robes or some low lying obstacle, or maybe just she stepped on the wrong crack and broke her mothers back. Dennis wasn’t sure. The only thing he saw was her tumbling face first to the ground. Now was his chance! He counted off his steps. 1…2…3…jump! The third year sprung off his right leg into the air. Soaring! Like an eagle! Ravenclaw!

The next thing he knew his foot had caught on the downed Avis and he went tumbling over her on the hard stone floor. Dennis was looking up at the ceiling of the corridor now questioning all of the choices that led him to this exact moment. However, he couldn’t afford to stay down for long! He had a race to win! He let out a moan as he got to his feet and searched for Avis before blasting off down the hall again!
Godmod of Avis permitted to set up the race since she is allergic to writing starters.

Guess What Lies Ahead, Only One Way to Find Out! Avis
Avis felt like a rugby player, winding her way through the masses of students exiting the various classrooms, her cloak flying behind her like the superhero she was. She was so intent on staying ahead of the third year through a variety of jukes that she completely forgot that the floors of this castle were rough, uneven cobblestone.

As a child, her mum had always told her when crossing the street to "keep your head up, the ground can't hurt you." This, as Avis had reminded her mother time and time again, was utter nonsense. Landmines, for one. And apparently uneven cobblestone within her school.

Her flats caught on an uneven edge and she tumbled forward, throwing her arms out in front of her to catch her. She face began to turn an embarrassed shade of tomato, only to turn into a snicker as Dennis tumbled over her. Tripping on uneven cobblestones was embarrassing, but tripping on a student, no matter how short, was another thing entirely.

No time to dwell on it, however, as there was still a race to win. Scrambling up to her feet, she took off down the hallway, brushing her hair out of her face and ignoring the glanced from the normal, studious children. They didn't matter. Maybe if they started breaking curfew and running up and down the halls, they could be prefects too.

She pulled off a rather sharp turn, stylishly grabbing a suit of armor to tighten her angle, but as she put her weight into it, rather than pulling her around, the arm instead flew off the suit of armor, and her momentum send her slamming rather ungracefully into the wall opposite. Drat the poor construction of those armor suits. Shaking herself off, Avis took a moment to reattach the arm before shaking herself off, rubbing her shoulder, and continuing on her way, ignoring the clatter of the poorly reattached arm as it slammed to the floor.

Dennis groaned as he heard the snicker but by the time he picked himself up, the rocket he was chasing had shot down the hall. No time to lose! With a burst of energy Dennis matched the Ravenclaw stride for stride as they bounded down the hallway and down the stairs. Avis took a sharp turn and as he rounded, he first heard, before he saw, a sharp clattering sound. Seconds later it revealed the would be race lead had stumbled. "Eyes ahead next time, Avis!" he shouted at her as he, like she had done before, sped past her not giving her a moment of reprieve.

He nearly vaulted down the next flight of stairs. He stumbled briefly not believing he made it but steeled himself and pressed on down an adjoining hallway. There was a race to win and there would be many times to relive his epic acts of heroism later once he won! And from the looks of things, he would certainly be winning! He cut down another hall and then again another, but this time, with lead enough to knockdown a flagpole. If she didn't watch her feet again, she would be in for another treat!

Tail - no obstacles for Dennis!

Guess What Lies Ahead, Only One Way to Find Out! Avis
Avis grunted in frustration as the third year bolted past her, managing to not trip on her, hard as she had tried to become a very large obstacle, which was somewhat unsuccessful, as her short self didn't even get to span the hallway. If only she had grown. At some point. Ever.

Her mum told her it was the caramel. That it was making her short and she would be tall if she ate more asparagus. Avis had helpfully pointed out that she was only a few inches shorter than her mother, which had led to the end of the conversation and a suspicious amount of vegetables on her plate at dinner.

Springing up to her feet, Avis kicked the fallen hand of the armor suit toward the wall. Turns out, metal is bouncy, and Avis had to leap over it as it flew back toward the middle of the hallway, Thankfully, she did. It would have been awful if she had tripped on the same obstacle twice.

As she approached the stairway, she angled herself sideways just a bit for better grip as she smoothly flew down the steps two at a time. Really, she should start doing stair races.
Her truly amazing stair performance got her close enough to Dennis to start messing with him. "Don't trip. Don't triiiip. No pressure." Her amateur singsongy voice dissolved into a joking smile as she tried to catch her breathe. Singing while running had not been her best idea.

Dennis was racing through the halls now clearly winded and if he had any awareness at all, probably a little lost now that his attention was purely on keeping ahead of his classmate. Around one corner and another he tried to lose her but whatever madness had possessed her kept her on him like a homing missile. She even started to taunt him! Don’t trip? Why would he trip? He wasn’t going to trip was he? Yes. Yes he was. Coming to a deadend he didn’t remember being there earlier, without thinking Dennis spun on his heels, running now in Avis’ direction, side stepped her but then lost his balance and slammed into a suit of armor. “Avis…” Dennis cursed even though it was he who led them to the deadend that wasn’t there before. Picking himself up, he raced down the nearest corridor trying to either catch up after his folly. Why was this castle such a maze! At this rate he might actually lose…to a girl of all things! He wasn’t going to let that happen. Dennis redoubled his efforts trying to catch up, ready, or so he thought, for anything the Ravenclaw would throw at him. A thought came to him them – he’s a wizard! He can magic his way to victory, if only he had a clear shot and could think clearly.

Avus did not know this castle. Yes yes, she had been living here and explored constantly, but she also had a pure talent of never being able to create a mental map. She had two strategies to remedy this: A, wander the castle until she found a section she recognized, and b, find someone who was going to the same place and stay behind them. Unfortunatly for Avis, it seemed her person of choice had a sense of direction equally as poor as her.

As Dennis spun around, Avis' eyes almost popped out of her head as she skidded to a stop, too shocked to even think about dodging. Thankfully, Dennis spun past her, and as she gathered her senses, she pivoted to bolt past him, flinching to the side as a loud clatter crashed down beside her. With a glance to the side, Avis snickered audibly, tilted her head to the side. "Looked like that one hurt." She grinned, slowing down slightly as she past him - he was still on the ground, it was a worthy waste of time. "Don't worry, I got my own bruises." Namely, the one that she could tell was spreading through her thigh from the last time she had fallen. It hurt ever time she stepped, but the pain was worth it for the flourishing victory that she was soon to have - if she could make it to the viaduct.

She found another set of stairs and bolted down them, breathing out a slight relief as she recognized the large door to the Great Hall. That meant she could get out the door.

Focusing all her energy on running, Avis bolted out the door, sliding to a quick stop and looking back, completely oblivious as to whether Dennis had passed her along the way.
