but twice in the library. He could not remember ever having been this cheeky, energetic, or even so rude. With a quiet huff, he shifted the stack of two books and a paper bag more upright against his chest. An open leather satchel hung from his shoulder, slowly tugging the stiffly pressed collar askew. The afternoon sun broke warmly through the many windows. It seemed the weekend was already calling to the students in its sweet voice. All the while Lorenzoβs bed was luring him back in the direction of the Ravenclaw Tower. He was already longing for his pillow, and just as much to tuck the lucky charm from his bag back beneath it. For, just as wildly as his hair hung into his face, the blue sheep charm seemed to be longing for rest as well. The small, soft creature, no larger than a hand, hung half out of its pouch. Β Only a little yellow ribbon kept it fastened to the strap, or at least so the boy believed. x
Since the summer break, the little stuffed toy had found its place at his side. As a keepsake from home, someone from the Vincenti staff had slipped it into his palm. It was meant to bring him luck β small enough to sit in his bag during examinations, and yet large enough to be pressed into a little ball between his fingers. His father, of course, could know nothing of it. It did not belong to the social rules, nor to the aesthetic that must always seem to encircle Salvatore Vincenti and, by extension, his son. Lorenzo kept moving. The caution of the first corridor had still accompanied him at the beginning, yet now that too was taking its leave. The books were growing heavier in his arms, and the pull of the bag pressed deeper into his shoulder. Like a hand too stern upon an arm, it weighed him down until even his usually upright posture turned away from him. Lorenzo drew the books closer. The paper bag, with its leaves and twigs inside, rustled softly against his collarbone. The satchel gave a jolt. The strap pressed against his uniform and, in a small attempt to keep it close before it could slip, Lorenzo hitched his shoulder upward. The weight shifted. The leather slid along his side and further back against his spine. Perhaps it was precisely in that moment that the sheep came loose. Soft, embarrassing and small, even its landing upon the stone floor behind him went unnoticed. Lorenzo felt only the edges of his books, whilst the desire to sprint to the Ravenclaw Tower began to take on both shape and colour. |

Sturdy stone walls, marble floors, high vaulted ceilings, gothic windows worthy of an ancient castle, all surrounded by vast grounds of forests, open fields, and a black lake. It was September and Frederick was back at Hogwarts for his second year, once again surrounded by the familiar scenery of the school of witchcraft and wizardry. The Buckley boy had just returned from the summer holidays and had been eagerly looking forward to coming back to the castle to see his friends again, play Quidditch and attend some, though certainly not all, of his classes. A whole year of new experiences lay ahead of him, and he could hardly wait.
At the end of the short first week of the school term, after a thoroughly enjoyed dinner in the Great Hall with his fellow Gryffindors, Frederick excused himself and got up to head for the Gryffindor Common Room, becoming the first of his group to call it a night. The following morning, the Quidditch team's first meeting was already scheduled, the captains excited by the prospect of a better season than the last, and Fred had no intention of being late. As he left, the boy cast a brief glance toward the enchanted ceiling, finding a sky filled with stars and only a few clouds, a sign that dawn would likely bring sunshine and, perhaps, a little warmth before it gradually gave way to the arrival of autumn.
Alone in the corridors, Buckley still had seven floors to climb before reaching Gryffindor Tower. He walked at an unhurried pace, carrying his brown canvas backpack over both shoulders, with his hands tucked into the side pockets of his trousers. Along the way, he spotted a handful of familiar faces and many more unfamiliar ones, including children younger than himself, reminding him of his own first weeks wandering through the castle and the times he had gotten lost among its moving staircases and endless corridors. A year later, Frederick felt far more confident and familiar with the labyrinth that Hogwarts could be, allowing him to notice the details around him instead of focusing solely on which path to take to reach his destination.
Several floors higher, the number of students seemed to thin out, leaving only Gryffindors and Ravenclaws making their way toward the upper levels, where the towers housing their respective Common Rooms stood. At one point, Frederick noticed a dark-haired boy walking just ahead of him, his robes trimmed in bronze and blue. The boy seemed to be moving more slowly than Fred, apparently carrying something heavy in his arms, perhaps books, Buckley couldn't tell for certain from where he was, along with a satchel slung over one shoulder. Without slowing down, Frederick stepped out of his straight path to overtake the Ravenclaw ahead of him, but before he could do so, something caught his eye, making him stop abruptly.
Without realizing it, as the boy continued walking as though nothing had happened, Lorenzo had dropped a small blue stuffed toy, which rolled across the stone floor until it came to rest against one of the corridor walls. Without a second thought, Frederick bent down to pick it up and took a closer look at it, a small, soft sheep that fit neatly in the palm of his hand. Picking up his pace with a short jog to catch up to Lorenzo, he called out to the Ravenclaw. "Hey, you! You dropped your, uh..." He paused mid-sentence, his steps slowing as he hesitated over whether to call it a stuffed animal or not. "Your blue sheep," Fred finished a few seconds later, holding out the little toy in the palm of his hand toward Lorenzo.
