The Sorting Ceremony - Amelia Grace Clarkson
As I walked into the great hall, all of my senses were over ridden by astonishment and awe. Warmly lit, flickering candles hung in the air above me. Four long tables laden with cutlery loomed ahead.
I formed a queue with the rest of my fellow first years and stared nervously ahead of me. The headmaster welcomed us in graciously but it still didn't reassure the bundle of nerves writhing in my stomach. He raised what looked like a misshaped hat above his head. He then put it down on the three legged stool, opened he arms wide and shouted, "Let the sorting ceremony begin."
All four of the long tables erupted into applause. The candles suspended in the air came to life, dancing in long wide arcs.
Then suddenly crack, everyone and everything went silent. A grating, out of tune voice suddenly exploded out of the hat. It had struck into song and this is how it went
Oh you may not think me pretty,
But don’t judge on what you see,
I’ll eat myself if you can find
A smarter hat than me.
You can keep your bowlers black,
Your top hats sleek and tall,
For I’m the Hogwarts Sorting Hat
And I can cap them all.
There’s nothing hidden in your head
The Sorting Hat can’t see,
So try me on and I will tell you
Where you ought to be.
You might belong in Gryffindor,
Where dwell the brave at heart,
Their daring, nerve, and chivalry
Set Gryffindors apart;
You might belong in Hufflepuff,
Where they are just and loyal,
Those patient Hufflepuffs are true
And unafraid of toil;
Or yet in wise old Ravenclaw,
if you’ve a ready mind,
Where those of wit and learning,
Will always find their kind;
Or perhaps in Slytherin
You’ll make your real friends,
Those cunning folks use any means
To achieve their ends.
So put me on! Don’t be afraid!
And don’t get in a flap!
You’re in safe hands (though I have none)
For I’m a Thinking Cap!
I jumped when my name was the first to be read out. I walked slowly up to the stool and stared down at it for a second. Everyone in the audience seemed to be holding its breath. I gently picked up the ancient hat the jammed it on my head as I sat down. The hat spoke again but this time not in song or rhyme, but it seemed to be reading my mind.
Sorting Hat: Ah… Amelia Clarkson. Let’s see now. There’s quite a lot going on in here.
Amelia: Please not Slytherin, Please not Slytherin, Please...
Sorting Hat: Hmm. I see courage, and a strong sense of intelligence. Interesting combination.
Amelia: Yes that sounds more like me.
Sorting Hat: You’ve spent more time than people realise with the animals you love and reading. You notice the things others miss.
Amelia: Probably sounds about right.
Sorting Hat: There’s bravery here too—more than you give yourself credit for. You’d step forward when it truly mattered, wouldn’t you?
Amelia: Yes, if I thought someone needed something more than I needed it, then I'd give it to them.
Sorting Hat: Gryffindor could shape you into someone bold… Ravenclaw would admire your curiosity… and Slytherin would make use of that quiet determination.
Amelia: NOOOO!!!! NOT SLYTHERIN PLEASE. Imagine my families shame.
Sorting Hat: Ah, yes… you’re hoping for Gryffindor, aren’t you?
Amelia: No, I'm not.
Sorting Hat: But what you value most isn’t glory. It isn’t power. It isn’t even being the cleverest person in the room.
You value others before yourself, but aren't afraid to stand up to those who challenge you.
Loyalty. Kindness. The people you choose, and the people who choose you.
You’ll work harder than anyone expects. You’ll stand by your friends when others walk away. You’ll grow stronger quietly, without needing the world to notice.
Yes… I know exactly where you belong.
Sorting Hat (shouting to the Great Hall): HUFFLEPUFF!
The table draped in black and yellow erupted into cheers. Amelia pulled off the hat, smiling despite herself, and made her way toward the Hufflepuff table as applause echoed through the hall.
