The afternoon sun hung overhead, warming the old stone paths and the benches scattered throughout the garden. A light breeze drifted through the area, rustling leaves and turning pages for anyone unlucky enough not to keep a hand on their book. For most people, it was the perfect place to sit quietly and enjoy a little peace. For Mikey, it was apparently the perfect place to hide.

He came sprinting through the archway far faster than anyone should have been moving in a courtyard. His tie was half undone, one shirt sleeve was rolled up, and he looked over his shoulder twice in the span of three seconds. Whatever had happened, it was very clear he did not want to be found. Mikey slowed only when he spotted a girl sitting alone on one of the benches with a book open in front of her. Without really thinking it through, he changed direction and headed straight toward her.

"Don't panic," he said quickly as he dropped onto the empty space beside her. There was a slight pause. "Actually, that's probably a terrible way to start." He glanced over his shoulder again. Then he scooted slightly closer to the back of the bench, like somehow sitting there would make him invisible. "Okay. New plan." Another glance behind him before he continued. "If anyone comes through that archway and asks if you've seen me..." He looked back again."...you haven't." For a moment he looked completely serious, then he smiled.

"Which should be easy because we haven't actually met before." He held out his right hand. "Mikey." As if introducing himself somehow made the situation less strange. A second later he looked toward the archway again and frowned. "Actually, before introductions." He pointed toward the entrance. "Do you see a very big, very angry fourth year coming this way?" There was a pause before he continued. "I may have accidentally, sort of, maybe tripped him in the corridor."

His expression shifted. "To be fair, it was an accident and it only happened because I had a cramp in my leg." The realization hit him a second later. "That didn't make it sound any better, did it?" Mikey sighed dramatically and sank lower into the bench. The girl had been peacefully reading a book thirty seconds ago. Now a complete stranger was attempting to use her as part of an escape plan. When he thought about it like that, he felt a little rude.

The library was one of those places where surprises usually arrived in the form of books. At least, that had always been Stelle's experience.
You'd open a volume looking for a reference for an assignment and end up discovering a forgotten story about some eccentric wizard who had tried to raise hippogriffs in an apartment. The surprises belonged to the shelves, the yellowed pages, and the secrets hidden in the margins. They didn't usually appear in the form of people. That's why, when a stranger burst into her peaceful afternoon of reading as if he were fleeing a war, it took Stelle several seconds to react.
She was sitting by a window, an open book on her lap, a small stack of texts she would probably read later. The golden afternoon light filtered through the glass, painting warm patches on the pages. Everything was calm.

"Don't be scared." The sentence had the exact opposite effect. Stelle looked up. The boy had just plopped down beside her with the nonchalance of someone mistaking the library for a train station. She blinked a couple of times. Who was he? Did she know him? Was she supposed to know him? As he continued talking, questions began to pile up in her head with the speed of a stampede.

Why was he constantly looking over his shoulder? Who was he hiding from? And why had he chosen to hide right next to her?
Halfway through his explanation, Stelle realized she'd stopped listening, not out of rudeness—well, maybe a little. But mostly because she was too busy trying to understand what kind of situation had just landed on her bench. It was like when a pigeon accidentally flew in through an open window and no one knew exactly how it got there. Except that pigeons were usually better groomed. Finally, something managed to cut through the jumble of thoughts. An outstretched hand, a name—that helped at least a little more. Stelle studied the hand for a moment before taking it carefully.

"Stelle. It's a pleasure... Mickey." He gave her a small, polite smile. No sooner had she finished saying his name than he was already looking back toward the entrance arch. As if he expected a monstrous creature or a teacher to appear at any moment. Depending on the circumstances, both options could be equally terrifying. Then came the explanation, or at least a version of it. An older student, a stumble that led to an accident, and a flight to avoid potential anger. The more he spoke, the more confused Stelle felt. Not because the story was complicated—on the contrary, it was surprisingly simple. And precisely for that reason, it was incomprehensible to her, making her frown slightly.

"And why didn't you explain it to him?" The question came out completely sincerely. For a few seconds, there seemed to be a vast philosophical difference between them. Because for Stelle, the solution was obvious. If someone thought you had done something wrong accidentally, you simply explained it. End of story. Her grandfather always said that people were much more reasonable than they seemed, while her grandmother held the exact opposite opinion. Stelle still hadn't decided which of the two was right. Although she was beginning to suspect it depended a lot on the person.

"I mean, if it really was an accident, wouldn't it be simpler to just say that?" She closed the book on her lap and leaned her head slightly toward the door. She didn't see any angry students. The tranquility of the garden remained undisturbed, and for some reason, that made the whole situation seem even more absurd. She looked at Mikey again. Now that she had time to observe him more closely, he seemed less like a runaway and more like a boy who had made a series of questionable decisions at breakneck speed. A situation Stelle understood perfectly. She had known enough people to know that some had a knack for making small problems worse, like a talent. And she suspected Mikey belonged to that group; the thought made her smile.

"Although I suppose running away is more exciting." She tucked the bookmark between the pages of her book. The afternoon's reading seemed officially interrupted, and she wasn't too bothered. After all, interesting stories rarely began with someone quietly reading. They usually started exactly like this: with a stranger appearing out of nowhere. Her grandfather insisted that adventures made people interesting. As she watched Mikey dramatically sink into the bench like a criminal being chased by half of Hogwarts, Stelle began to think that maybe he was right.

Mikey hated how much sense her explanation made. Not because she was wrong, but because she was right. His eyes drifted back toward the archway for what felt like the tenth time since he'd sat down. The courtyard looked exactly the same as it had a minute ago. Students wandered past without paying him any attention. A pair of first years crossed the path carrying books nearly as large as they were. Somewhere nearby, someone laughed. No dramatic confrontation or chase. In fact there was nothing out of the ordinary. Which made it increasingly difficult to justify why he'd launched himself across the courtyard and hidden beside a complete stranger.

Maybe he had overreacted, there wasn't much "maybe" about it. He let out a sigh as he slumped back against the bench. The worst part was that he'd known it the second she'd pointed it out. Running had just seemed easier at the time, almost like an instinct. Then again, most of his questionable decisions seemed easier at the time and that was sort of the problem. As he sat there thinking about it, something suddenly popped into his head. "Oh, wait." Without another word, he grabbed the satchel resting beside his feet and pulled it onto his lap. Immediately he started digging through it.

The search looked important enough that he forgot about the conversation entirely for a few moments. A stack of parchment appeared first. Then a quill and another spare quill. Then a crumpled assignment that looked like it had been shoved into the bottom of the bag weeks ago. Mikey frowned and more digging followed. There was a folded note and something that might have once been homework. "You ever notice how things just disappear into these?" he muttered, mostly to himself trying not to blame himself for his unorganized bag. His entire arm disappeared into it and for a moment he looked genuinely concerned. Then his face brightened. "There you are."

Triumphantly, he pulled out a sandwich wrapped in paper. The bread was slightly flattened but it still looked fresh. He shrugged. The paper crinkled as he unwrapped it and took a bite. For a while he sat quietly, chewing and watching the courtyard. The breeze stirred the pages of Stelle's book and rustled the leaves overhead. It was peaceful. A lot more peaceful than his entrance had been. Only then did he really take the time to look at her. He'd interrupted her afternoon. Taken over half her bench and asked her to lie for him. And somehow she hadn't told him to leave. She hadn't even looked particularly annoyed. If anything, she'd just accepted the situation and started talking to him like this sort of thing happened every day.

Another bite disappeared. "If somebody ran up to me out of nowhere and started asking me to cover for them, I'd probably have about fifty more questions." He said with his mouth still half full. There was something oddly easy about talking to her. Which was strange on account of only meeting a few minutes ago. Most conversations with strangers didn't start with him hiding from imaginary consequences and eating a slightly crushed sandwich. Then again, most of his days weren't exactly normal, so there was also that he thought. Mikey looked down at the remaining half of the sandwich. Then at her. Without thinking too hard about it, he held it out slightly in her direction. "Want some?" The offer was completely genuine.

Stelle watched as Mikey delved deeper into his backpack with the concentration of an explorer who had just discovered an unknown continent. For a few seconds, he vanished completely from the conversation, absorbed by this search that seemed to hold vital importance. She didn't intervene. She had learned that some people had to pursue an idea until they grasped it before returning to the real world. While he rummaged through parchment, quills, and crumpled papers, Stelle laid the book on her lap and observed it with quiet curiosity. It wasn't the first time she had seen a backpack in such a state. At Hogwarts, there was a rather peculiar relationship between students and order. It seemed that the more brilliant someone was in a subject, the more likely they were to carry around half the library in forgotten items and folded assignments.

When he finally found the sandwich, the expression of victory that lit up his face was so genuine that it reminded her of the adventurers in storybooks when they found hidden treasure. She found it curious how people revealed more of themselves in small moments than in grand speeches. She had known students capable of talking for hours about their virtues without saying anything truly important. In contrast, a few minutes watching someone desperately search for a lost lunch were enough to discover a surprising amount. For example, that Mikey probably lived by improvisation and somehow, he always managed to survive it.

The afternoon seemed to have calmed around her. The courtyard was still full of students, but the bustle had acquired that distant quality that sounds have when you stop paying attention to them. The wind gently moved the pages of his closed book, and the shadows of the clouds crossed the gardens like silent ships. Then he spoke. Stelle heard his comment about the questions and barely raised an eyebrow. The observation was fair, perhaps too fair. Because the truth was that a reasonable person would have asked who he was, why he was running, or what exactly he was hiding from before agreeing to become an impromptu accomplice in an unknown situation. She, on the other hand, had simply made room for him on the bench.

“I guess I should defend myself by saying I was curious,” he finally replied, with a small smile. “But that would probably make things worse.” He looked down at the book resting on his knees.

“My mom says I have a bad habit of trusting people too quickly, but that it’s a great way to learn interesting stories. And my grandma always says it’s a dangerous trait.” The statement was accompanied by a soft laugh. And, as was often the case, Stelle suspected they were both right. She looked up at him again.

“Besides, you seemed more scared than dangerous.” That was perhaps what had finally convinced her. She hadn’t seen malice in his hasty arrival, nor the calculating air of someone trying to deceive her. She had seen a boy who had reacted before thinking and who now seemed to be discovering the consequences of that decision. It was a strangely familiar situation. When Mikey offered her part of the sandwich, surprise came first, then tenderness. She hadn’t expected that kind of gesture. She found it curious that some people struggled to share secrets, yet were willing to offer half their lunch without a second thought. She glanced at the sandwich for a moment, then gently shook her head.

"No, thank you. I think you've earned it after such an expedition." A playful smile spread across her lips, and her eyes flicked down to the open backpack.

"Although I'm worried that if you put it away again, you won't find it until Christmas." The image was so absurd that she ended up laughing. And as the laughter slowly faded, Stelle found herself reflecting on how strange some encounters were. That morning, she had planned a simple afternoon: a book, a quiet bench, and perhaps a couple of chapters before dinner. And now she was sitting next to a stranger who had arrived fleeing an imaginary threat, sharing a surprisingly pleasant conversation. Truthfully, she didn't mind at all. In fact, she suspected that this story would be far more entertaining to recall than the chapter she had been reading.

"So… what do you plan to do now?"

Mikey took another bite of the sandwich while Stelle spoke, and unfortunately every sentence she said seemed to make more sense than he wanted it to. That was becoming a pattern. He wasn't entirely sure how someone he'd met less than twenty minutes ago had already managed to poke holes in several of his life choices, but here they were. He looked across the courtyard again while he chewed thoughtfully. Everything looked completely normal. Students walked between classes. A couple people sat beneath a tree talking. Someone dropped a stack of parchment and immediately started chasing stray pages when the wind caught half the pages.

The world had moved on and no one was looking for him. Honestly, when he thought about it now, it was a little embarrassing. The fact that Stelle hadn't laughed him off the bench immediately was honestly impressive. When she mentioned trusting people too quickly, Mikey glanced back toward her and smiled. "That sounds familiar." The grin that followed suggested he wasn't planning on changing that anytime soon. The funny thing was that he'd never really thought about it before. Most of his friends had started because he'd simply talked to them. Sometimes at random. Sometimes in weird situations. Occasionally while getting himself into trouble. Actually, now that he thought about it, a worrying number of his friendships had started while he was getting himself into trouble. Maybe there was a connection there.

Mikey frowned thoughtfully at the sandwich before his attention returned when Stelle called him more scared than dangerous. The comment earned an immediate laugh. "That's probably fair." He didn't even try arguing. She wasn't wrong, in fact most of the time Mikey wasn't getting into trouble because he wanted to. Trouble just seemed to appear around him with surprising consistency. Or maybe he accidentally walked toward it. The breeze shifted through the courtyard again, carrying the smell of grass and warm stone. Somewhere overhead, a bird landed on the edge of a roof and immediately started making noise for no obvious reason.

Mikey found himself relaxing. Maybe because she'd already seen him at his most ridiculous. Hard to make a worse first impression after showing up like a fugitive and hiding behind a bench. He realized that he had set the bar pretty low. Then came her question. What did he plan to do now? Mikey blinked and for a moment he actually considered it. The obvious answer would've been returning to whatever he'd been doing before. Except he'd forgotten what that was. Which felt concerning but not too unusual for him. His entire afternoon had somehow become this conversation. Not that he minded that much. But it did leave him without a plan.

"You know..." He leaned back slightly. Running away had been the plan. Everything after that had been left completely up to chance. Which was probably why he'd ended up here. Talking to a Hufflepuff he'd never met before while eating a sandwich he'd nearly forgotten existed. His life was weird. Not in a bad way. Just weird. A comfortable silence settled for a few moments. Mikey found he didn't mind that ether. The courtyard itself seemed content to fill the space. Leaves rustled and students passed by. The afternoon sun stretched shadows across the stone paths. “I guess I don’t really have a plan.” He said finally.

Mikey looked down at the remains of the sandwich. Then at the book resting near Stelle. An idea occurred to him. A harmless one for once. "So." The word broke the silence again. "What were you reading before I completely ruined your afternoon?" he grinned. "Because I feel like interrupting someone's book should probably come with consequences." His eyes shifted toward the cover. "Was it any good?" The question was genuine. Mostly because he realized he knew almost nothing about the girl sitting beside him and if he'd accidentally stolen her afternoon, the least he could do was learn something about the person he'd stolen it from.

Stelle watched Mikey gaze at the courtyard with the same distracted attention one might have watching the rain from a window: as if he were waiting for the landscape to decide, at any moment, to answer a question he hadn't yet been able to formulate. There was something strangely endearing about him. He seemed like one of those people who drifted through life following the wind rather than a map, convinced that any destination would eventually lead them exactly where they were meant to be. Perhaps that's why she could easily imagine him hiding behind a bench to escape trouble and, minutes later, ending up chatting calmly with a stranger as if it had all been part of a plan laid out from the start. The laughter they shared drifted between them as lightly as a leaf carried by the breeze. Stelle had always liked people who could laugh at themselves. She had discovered long ago that pride was too heavy an armor to wear every day and that, on the other hand, a sense of humor made even the most embarrassing situations much lighter.

“I think that’s a talent, too,” she remarked with a warm smile, resting an elbow on the back of the bench as she watched him out of the corner of her eye. “Not everyone can admit so quickly that the other person is probably right. Most prefer to argue for ten minutes even if they know they’re wrong.” Her voice retained that calm tone that seemed to envelop conversations in a kind of domestic tranquility, as if talking to her were as natural as sitting in the shade of a tree on a warm afternoon. When Mikey confessed that he didn’t really have any plans, Stelle didn’t seem surprised. On the contrary, her blue eyes lit up with a spark of complicity. She glanced down at the stone path, where a clump of dry leaves drifted slowly in the breeze. Then she followed Mikey’s gaze to the book lying beside him. Her fingers absentmindedly stroked the cover before she carefully lifted it, as if holding something familiar. A soft laugh escaped her lips.

“Oh… that, I forgot.” She showed him the cover for a moment before placing the book back on her knee.

"Book of Spells, by Miranda Azor. I'm behind on enchantments and thought I could… try to figure something out on my own." She flicked a finger between the pages so as not to lose her place. Her smile took on a nostalgic hue, though it lasted only an instant before transforming back into that luminous expression that seemed so characteristic of her.

"Although, to be honest…" she looked up at him, "I don't think you've ruined my afternoon. Now I have a tutorial on what I can do if I accidentally hook up with someone." She paused briefly, unable to suppress a laugh.

"That's a lot harder to forget than a chapter." The wind stirred a few strands of blonde hair around her face again. For a few seconds, she watched the students coming and going, the distant murmur of conversations mingling with birdsong and the sound of pages rustling in the breeze. She looked at him again with genuine curiosity, and her lips curved into an amused smile.

"You…? What were you doing before you ran away from that angry fourth-year student?"

“Ouch.” Mikey raised an eyebrow as he looked down at the book, then up at her. “You’re actually studying on a weekend.” The expression on his face suggested that he was almost impressed with her choice for a minute before he burst out laughing. “I mean, I respect your dedication to studies.” He took another bite of the sandwich, shaking his head. “Although, who am I to talk. I was heading to the library too.” He showed her his friendliest smile. “See, I planned to finally act responsibly and get some work done, maybe even read a book before some professor forces me to.”

He took a bite of his sandwich and only after that seemed to realize something. “What was I doing before all this?” He frowned and tried to remember. A few moments passed before he widened his eyes. “Oh! Right. Yes, I was supposed to be going to the library. I have just finished lunch and convinced myself that I was going to do something productive and then…” He held up one finger. “I accidentally tripped a fourth-year student.” Then he added another finger. “Panicked.” A third followed. “And ran away.” He looked at his own fingers for a moment before putting them down. “When you tell everything out loud, there really wasn’t any thinking behind that, was there?” He laughed embarrassingly and shook his head. “No, honestly, it’s impressive how fast a small incident turned into the whole tragedy.”

For a while, he watched two younger students cross the courtyard, balancing their books that definitely weighed too much for both of them. Then he turned back to her and added, looking somewhere between amused and frustrated. “You know what really gets on my nerves?” He pointed at her with the corner of his sandwich. “You were absolutely right.” He sighed. “I hate when reasonable people spoil my brilliant ideas.” The grin on his face made it clear he was not really complaining. “I have known you…” He tilted his head in thought. “Fifteen minutes?” Then he gave her a serious look. “Well, let’s agree it never happened, ok? Old friends and all, you know what I mean.” He nodded as if they made an imaginary agreement as if they did know each other for a very long time. There was a breeze in the courtyard and it rustled the leaves above and carried the chatter of students along the stone path. Mikey watched a few of those fall down before turning to her with a faint smile on his face. “You know… I would say it was a pretty productive afternoon.” He added with a mischievous look on his face. “Anything planned for the rest of yours?”

She watched him count off his misadventures on his fingers, trying to maintain a serious expression that slowly crumbled into a smile. There was something almost endearing about the way Mikey managed to transform a simple stumble into a chain of events that, told by anyone else, would probably sound much more serious than they actually were.

"No, there definitely wasn't much thought behind that," she finally admitted, letting out a small laugh. "Although I must admit that turning a walk to the library into a chase across the courtyard takes a certain amount of talent." She ran her hands along the spine of the book resting on her lap. The truth was, she'd already accepted that her afternoon of studying was ruined long before Mikey even asked. And, to her own surprise, she wasn't too bothered by it. The admission that she'd been right made Stelle raise her eyebrows with almost childlike satisfaction.

"Absolutely right?" she repeated, placing a hand on her chest in feigned surprise. "Wow. I think I'm going to need someone to write this down before you change your mind." The smile that accompanied her words made it clear she was enjoying this small victory a little too much. However, when Mikey suggested they pretend to have known each other for years, Stelle gently shook her head.

"Fifteen minutes is far too long to erase such a mess. I think we'll have to settle for saying our friendship began under… unconventional circumstances." She paused thoughtfully at his last question. Her eyes traveled to the book and then to the clear sky above the buildings. She had planned to spend a good part of the afternoon reading, perhaps reading a few more pages and then finding something interesting to do. Now, however, the idea of immediately returning to her original plans seemed rather dull.

"Actually, I was planning to finish studying," she confessed, looking at the book as if it had just betrayed her. "But after this dramatic interruption, I'm not sure I want to go back to it. I might as well go find something more entertaining." He sat up a little on the bench and settled the book in his arms, causing Stelle's expression to soften into a smile.

He found himself surprisingly comfortable sitting there. The awkwardness that usually came with meeting someone new had disappeared somewhere along the conversation. Maybe it was because neither of them had really tried to impress the other. There wasn't much point pretending to be calm or mysterious after arriving out of breath and hiding behind a bench. She'd already seen him at one of his more embarrassing moments. Oddly enough, that made everything easier.

His eyes wandered around the courtyard again. The afternoon had settled into a comfortable rhythm. A pair of first years hurried across the path carrying armfuls of books, nearly dropping half of them when one tripped over an uneven stone. A group of older students laughed loudly near the fountain before wandering off toward the castle doors. Somewhere overhead, a bird landed on the roof and immediately began making an unbelievable amount of noise for something so small.

When Stelle admitted she wasn't sure she wanted to go back to studying anymore, Mikey looked down at the book resting in her arms before looking back up at her. He shuddered dramatically then he rested his elbows on his knees for a moment, absentmindedly turning the sandwich wrapper over in his hands while he thought. The afternoon suddenly seemed wide open. A little while ago he'd been convinced his day had already gone completely off course. Now he wasn't sure he wanted it to get back on course. He glanced toward the open stretch of lawn beyond the courtyard walls. The weather had turned out surprisingly nice. There were only a handful of clouds drifting lazily across the sky, and a steady breeze carried the smell of fresh grass through the gardens.

It would've been a shame to spend the rest of the day indoors. His mind wandered briefly to the Quidditch pitch. Flying had always been the easiest way to clear his head. It didn't really matter whether it was practice, messing around with teammates, or simply seeing how long he could stay in the air before someone shouted at him to come down. Everything else seemed to fade away once he was above the ground. He looked back at Stelle and an idea occurred to him almost immediately. It was probably a little impulsive. Then again, most of his better ideas usually were.

"So..." he said, brushing a few crumbs from his robes as he stood up from the bench. "You've officially decided studying sounds boring. He slipped the crumpled sandwich paper back into his satchel before swinging it over one shoulder. "I've already proven I wasn't actually going to make it to the library." He tilted his head thoughtfully. A grin slowly spread across his face. "Which, in my experience, is usually when something interesting happens." For a second he almost talked himself out of asking. Maybe she'd say no. Maybe she'd never flown outside of lessons. Maybe she already had plans after all. Then he reminded himself that five minutes ago he'd asked a complete stranger to hide him from a chase that never happened. Compared to that, this was a perfectly normal question.

He smiled. "Do you fly?" There was a flicker of excitement in his eyes. "I was thinking..." He gestured vaguely toward the grounds beyond the castle. "The weather's too nice to waste on homework." He shrugged. "We could take our brooms out for a bit." His grin grew wider. "It will be fun, I promise." He paused just long enough for another mischievous thought to cross his mind. “And if there is any trouble you can honestly say that you don’t know me.”
