Saturday | 12 October 2019 | Late Morning

Aaron had been at Hogwarts for almost a month and a half now, and he was growing restless. Back home in Cardiff, he had a very specific routine. Most days after school, he would go to the dojang where he would practice Taekwondo with his friends. Sometimes it was just fun sessions, other times they were practicing for a competition of some sort. Either way, it genuinely helped him to destress after classes, able to let off some steam that always seemed to pent up inside him.

Of course, coming here to Hogwarts meant he had to give up his place at the dojang. He had been hoping to discover a club or something that other martial artists were a part of, but it seemed like there was no such organization (yet). With no Taekwondo, he was constantly feeling antsy and on edge. His friend Lydia had noticed it, and when he explained the situation, she had suggested finding a place on the grounds to practice by himself. It was a weird idea - to make a routine of practicing by himself - but he was willing to try anything at this point.

On Saturday morning, well after breakfast, Aaron headed out onto the grounds to find a place to practice. It was pretty cool outside, so he was wearing typical workout clothes. A pair of grey sweatpants and a thin, long-sleeved, plain white shirt. He wondered if he should have brought his dobok (the traditional Korean martial artist's uniform) to Hogwarts, but maybe it would've just made him stand out.

As the dark-haired wizard wandered the grounds, he was drawn closer to the Great Lake. He had discovered it was a nice spot to hang out and watch the waters whenever he was feeling restless, so perhaps it would serve as a good practice spot. It didn't take long for Aaron to find a nice area that overlooked the lake. It was a little grassy spot a couple meters above the water, and there was a nice-looking tree to provide shade (not that the sun was super present that day). He approached it with high hopes.

The eleven-year-old stood at the ledge, looking out across the waters and towards the horizon. It was a really pretty sight, something even a kid like him could appreciate. After a moment of taking it in, he moved his feet together and performed a bow in the direction of the lake. It was as if he was paying respects to the expanse of water, thanking it for allowing him a serene place to practice. He normally would bow to his instructors or his peers, but being all alone meant he had to improvise.

After his bow, a determined look came over his face and he turned slightly to have more room. Aaron moved into his first positions. A very basic form to start, since he hadn't practiced in over a month. Joonbi. Low block. Step and punch. Pivot on left foot. Step and punch. Pivot. His movements were fluid and precise as he moved around the tree that he had found.

It was bright outside when Dealla left the castle, the autumn sun bathing everything in light and turning brown leaves and yellowed grass a warm shade of golden. It didn't provide all that much warmth anymore, seeing as summer was well behind them now and the sun cool and distant, but it was a beautiful day to be outside, nonetheless.

It had been the same the previous day, which was why Dealla had spent much of the afternoon after classes outside, soaking in the sun before the year headed inevitably towards winter. Not that she disliked winter - she liked to think of herself as something of a snowball sniper, so she was actually looking forward to snow, and to taking out everyone who had annoyed her so far in a proper snowball battle, from a safe distance - but she'd miss the colours and the sun, either way.

Today she wasn't heading outside for the weather, though, or to spend some general time outside. Her goal was a very specific tree next to the Great Lake, and the scarf that was - hopefully - still hanging in its branches, quite a few meters above ground.
Dee had forgotten it there yesterday, after some kid had dared her to climb it. She'd almost snorted. She had been climbing cliffs home in Whitehaven, had they really thought a tree would scare her off? But either way, once she had gone up between the branches, Dee had realized just how pretty the view was up there, over the Great Lake in the light of the setting sun, so she had spent a little time up there. The scarf she had been wearing had been a little warm after the exercise of climbing, so she had taken it off, and promptly forgotten it when she'd left in a hurry for dinner.

Dee would be quite... miffed if she returned to found it gone. She liked that scarf.

Absorbed by her own thoughts as she tended to be, it took Dealla a while to realize that someone already occupied space next to the tree she was headed towards. A dark-haired boy in sweats was moving around it in sharp movements, even and consistent. Was he... dancing?
Yet, although the motion sequence definitely looked well-practiced and experienced, it didn't look like a dance, exactly. It was too sharp, too choppy, in a way.

Somewhat intrigued, Dealla continued towards him, her scarf momentarily forgotten. It didn't occur to her that, maybe, someone who practiced a routine next to the Lake, without any company, would prefer to be left alone, but even if it had, it probably wouldn't have stopped her. There was more than one friendship she had started by barging into a situation where she clearly wasn't welcome. It tended to work out - sometimes better, sometimes worse. She'd know soon enough what it would be today.

Her head tilted towards one side, Dee stopped, only a few meters from the tree. "Hi," she chirped brightly. "What are you doing?" Although the words might have sounded harsh, even mocking, if said in a different tone, there was no malice in her voice, only open curiosity. Dealla had never been one to judge something before she'd tried it - the very opposite, actually. She loved discovering new things.

Aaron had definitely noticed the approaching figure while he was practicing. Considering she was headed right towards him as he turned and performed his movements, he knew the inevitable social interaction was coming. As a normally charismatic boy, he had no qualms with it. It's just - he had finally felt a sense of calm. A distraction from the stress of being bad at his classes so far. Something to take his mind off of missing his family. A respite from the constant thoughts in his overactive mind.

But conversation usually helped, too.

"Hi!" Aaron greeted, relaxing his stance and dissolving the illusion of discipline in his body. The eleven-year-old wore a big smile on his face, as he usually did when greeting new people. He recognized this girl from some of his classes. Something Prince. It's not something he really acknowledged, but he had a very good memory for names and faces.

"Taekwondo," Aaron said, appreciative of her interest. "It's a form of Korean martial arts," he further explained. He wouldn't launch into a detailed explanation unless she asked for one, but most people didn't.

"I'm Aaron, by the way," he added a moment later. "I'm a Hufflepuff. You're a Ravenclaw, right? I think I've seen you in classes," Aaron said, rocking on the heel of his foot. Standing still was not his forte.

The boy didn't seem too bothered to be interrupted in his solitude, if his smile and friendly words were anything to go by. In response, Dee's expression morphed into a brilliant smile of her own, and she stepped a little closer.

Her blue eyes grew wide with curiosity at the mention of martial arts, but she decided to reply to his introduction first. "Hi Aaron!" She made a little face at the mention of her House. "Yes, I'm a Ravenclaw. My name is Dealla, but please, just call me Dee! It's nice to meet you." Honestly, she was a little impressed that he knew her House. They'd been here for a little over a month now, but she could hardly remember the faces of her classmates, let alone remember which House they belonged to if it didn't happen to be her own.

"I've never heard of... of Taekwondo?" The end of her sentence went up in a questioning lilt, the word unfamiliar on her tongue. "I've never done any martial arts, either, but one of my friends back home did Judo for a few months! Is that similar? I wanted to try it, too, but then he stopped and I forgot." Dee tilted her head to one side, her brown hair catching the sunlight with a golden glint, and considered Aaron's East Asian features. "Are you Korean?" There was genuine curiosity shining from her eyes.

Her scarf was all but forgotten at this point: The opportunity to meet someone new, learn about something she hadn't heard of before, had caught her attention and now held it fiercely. She didn't really have any plans for the day, and with a topic as interesting as this, there was an exponentially increasing likelihood that she would just pepper him with questions until he either ran away or it was time for lunch.

When the girl made a face at the mention of Ravenclaw, Aaron thought that maybe he had gotten it wrong. He had a very good memory for faces and names, something he had never really recognized as a talent, but it was something his parents had always been impressed by. They would bring up the names of people he had only met once before - their adult friends - and he could instantly describe who they were talking about. But had his memory finally made a mistake and mixed up this girl's face with someone else?

It seemed not, because she shortly confirmed her status as a first year Ravenclaw. The faltering smile on his face morphed into a grin at her introduction, "Hey! I just met a Hufflepuff girl called Maria the other day, and Dee is her last name!" Aaron found this coincidence quite amusing. "It's nice to meet you, too, Dee," he agreed.

Aaron shivered slightly when a leaf fell from the tree above them and landed on his hair. He quickly brushed it off him as Dee talked about her unfamiliarity with taekwondo. He believed her, considering most people only knew about karate when it came to martial arts. "Yeah, I guess it's not as popular, but we still have a lot of kids at our dojang - or, the dojang I used to be part of, before coming here," he told her. Then she mentioned judo, and his eyes widened slightly. He wasn't the most familiar with other martial arts, but he recognized the name, "Yeah, I think so? I mean, they're obviously different - I think judo is Japanese? But, I mean, they're still forms of martial arts, so they must be similar on some level."

Aaron started to swing his arms slightly, wanting to keep his body moving. He had always been a bit of a restless child. His own head tilted, mirroring Dee's expression as she asked about his heritage. A big smile formed on his face and he nodded. "I am, actually! Well- half. Mum's from South Korea, and she met my Dad who's Welsh, and we live in Cardiff. I've been there though - to South Korea, I mean - to visit my grandparents a couple times, and I can speak the language, too."

"What's your family like?" he wondered, still smiling in a friendly manner.

At the mention of the Hufflepuff girl called "Dee", Dealla started grinning, then promptly imagined herself having that last name. "I didn't know someone had Dee as a last name - I'm glad it's not me! Dealla Dee - Dee Dee - wouldn't that be ridiculous?" She giggled lightly and shook her head. "I'm looking forward to meeting her, then, although it sounds like it might get a little confusing."

The young Ravenclaw's eyes trailed the leaf as it fluttered down and landed on Aaron's hair, her eyes curving in amusement. The leaves had started turning yellow and red a while ago, and now more and more leaves were falling, signs of the end of the year moving closer. "What's a dojang?" she asked curiously, meeting his eyes again. "Oh - is that where you learn taekwondo?" She frowned thoughtfully, trying to recall her very sparse geography lessons from Muggle school. "Japan is pretty close to Korea, right? Maybe judo and taekwondo have common roots?"

Dee had started bouncing on the balls of her feet right when Aaron started swinging his arms. Maybe that was the reason she took note of his fidgeting, but either way, it brought a smile to her face. Maybe both of them had too much energy to spend right now.
It probably shouldn't be a surprise, she had interrupted him in the middle of his routine, after all, but she also wasn't ready to let the topic go and move on just yet. It was just too interesting.

First, however, she got distracted by his question. "Oh, that sounds so cool!" she said, sounding genuinely excited. "I've never been outside of the United Kingdom, and both my parents are English, so I only speak English. I've never met my grandparents, though - my dad's parents, I mean. My mum's parents I've met once. But speaking another language sounds so fascinating - do you think in English? Or Korean? What is it like speaking a different language?"

And then, watching his swinging arms again, she said, "I interrupted you, didn't I? Were you going to practice more?" She looked up, her blue eyes full of hunger for learning something new, wide and curious. "Do you think you could teach me something?"

Dee Dee? The name made Aaron giggle a little bit as well, thinking of just having two letters for a name. That would be ridiculous. "I don't think it'd be too confusing. She goes by Maria, after all," he pointed out, wondering if he should introduce the two of them. Maria was really nice, and it seemed like Dealla might be as well!

"Yeah! A dojang is just like a martial arts studio where you learn Taekwondo," Aaron confirmed, nodding along with his words. "And yeah, I think most martial arts have common roots. Korea and Japan are right next to each other," he added, when she asked about judo again. He honestly wasn't all that familiar with the history behind different martial arts - far more interested in the actual practice of them. His dad had once regaled him on the history of taekwondo when they first put him in the dojang - but he hadn't really been paying attention. Maybe he should've.

"Um.. I think in English! I guess it's because it's what I use the most," he told Dealla, having to actually think about the answer. His dark eyes refocused on the brunette as she proceeded to ask about what it's like to speak another language. What kind of answer was she looking for? Her enthusiasm about it was contagious, though, meaning a big smile never really left Aaron's face. "I'm not really sure how to explain.. It's just if I hear someone else speaking it, or if I'm asked to speak it, it just- makes sense? I dunno - I grew up learning it - my mom's not just Korean, she's even a Korean teacher! So she made us learn how to speak it and write it. I guess it is really cool being able to communicate with people in two different ways but I just don't know how to explain what it's like, I guess." This answer seemed less than satisfactory to Aaron, but Dealla had already moved on to asking about his practice session.

"It's okay," Aaron said immediately after she acknowledged that she had interrupted him. "I wasn't in any rush or anything." Then Dealla asked if he could show her something, and his eyes widened a little bit. She wanted to learn? From him?! His chest swelled a bit at being able to teach someone something - he was never the person that people came to for help with things. He sucked at schoolwork and he didn't have any particular talents except maybe video games - but this? Taekwondo? That was definitely something he had an affinity for!

Aaron was extremely excited by the prospect of teaching Dealla, and it showed. "Definitely! What do you want to learn? I mean- like, do you already know anything? I can teach you a punch or a kick. Or like some formations?" Aaron knew a lot about this martial arts form, and he was willing to show her everything if that's what she wanted.

Dee grinned in satisfaction as Aaron giggled at her silly joke, then she scrunched up her nose a little. "Maybe - but some people seem to have this weird habit of calling people by their last name. Not the professors, I mean, but other students. And I think I'd still react if someone called me Prince, so maybe Maria would respond to Dee, too?" She shrugged, amusement in her blue eyes. "Either way, it would probably be fun to meet her."

The Ravenclaw's expression was one of clear curiosity as she listened to Aaron's explanations, absorbing any information he had to offer. "That's so interesting," she said thoughtfully after he talked about what it was like for him to understand two languages. "Do you sometimes slip into the other language? If I had stayed in Muggle school, I would have gotten to learn another language at some point, French, maybe, or Spanish. It's odd that they don't offer that at Hogwarts - I mean, there are wizards in other countries, too, right? Shouldn't we learn how to communicate with at least some of them?" Dee was a source of endless question whenever a topic had woken her interest, and this was one of those times. As long as Aaron kept indulging her, there would be more - except if they moved on to something that held her with even stronger fascination.

The offer to actually teach her Taekwondo, for example, that was definitely a way to distract her from her questions about languages. Her eyes widened, an infectious grin spreading across her face as his obvious excitement was mirrored in herself, unfurling in her chest and making her fingers itch.

"I don't know anything, I don't think," she replied a bit apologetically. "I mean, I punched a boy once, but that wasn't very effective. And he deserved it," she added a second late, like an afterthought. "But! I'd love to learn everything you want to show me! Although I don't know if I'll be any good at it, but I'll try. I suppose you'd know better than I what a good start would be?" There was determination in her voice now, a kind of stubborn ambition to do anything she set her mind to. She would do her best, and succeed, even if it was just by pure power of will.

Straightening up a little, Dee looked at the Hufflepuff boy, eyes full of anticipation. "That routine you did earlier, was there a purpose to it? That specific order of movements? Is there a name for it?" She halted in her questions, trying to rein in her excitement. She'd been told that she could be a tad overwhelming at times. "Sorry. What can you show me?"

"Um, sometimes I accidentally speak English around my grandparents - not to them, but like, if my brother is in the same room, I'll talk to him in English. My parents don't like it when I do that, though, because it's rude... but no, I don't think I've accidentally 'slipped' into the wrong language when talking directly to someone," Aaron answered to the best of his ability. Dealla was full of questions, but he really didn't mind it. How else were you supposed to get to know someone? Although, in this case, he had a feeling she was just more interested in the fact that he was bilingual than him as a person. But he didn't mind that one bit. As she went on to talk about learning another language here at Hogwarts, Aaron tilted his head slightly.

"Surely there must be a spell that can instantly translate or something," he theorized. He had never considered that if he were still at Muggle school, he'd be given the chance to learn another language. Maybe languages would be a subject he'd actually be good at since he knew two already. Too bad he was stuck here at magical school where - even though he was putting in a lot more effort than muggle school - he continued to struggle.

That's why the opportunity to excel in something - teaching Taekwondo - was extremely appealing to the boy. Aaron was excited to feel confident in something again. Aaron grinned slightly when Dealla said that she had punched a boy once - and that he deserved it.

"Well, I could definitely teach you how to throw an effective punch," he assured her, nodding along with his words. "But if you'd rather learn the routine first, that works too... Throwing a punch is not specific to taekwondo, you know? But that routine is specific to martial arts. It's made up of three parts - joonbi, low block, and the swivel step." As he spoke, he demonstrated the moves he had been doing in the routine. "It's a white belt formation so it'd be good for you to learn if you're specifically interested in taekwondo.. if you're just interested in fighting, the punch is the way to go!" At that, he wound his arm back and acted as if he was about to punch the nearby tree. His fist stopped a few centimeters from hitting it, but it was clear he had put all of his strength into it and his expression had been very intense. He then looked back at Dealla with a friendly smile again, the aggression behind the punch completely gone.

"What interests you more?"

"Oh, so your grandparents... they don't speak English?" Dee was nodding along to his explanations. They made sense, she supposed - and really made her wish she spoke a second language. It sounded fascinating. Maybe she could get him to teach her Korean, too, although something like Spanish probably had more practical value. "It must be tough to live in a country and not be fluent in the language." She gave Aaron a bright smile, grateful that he didn't seem to mind her firing questions at him - it came close to an interrogation, really, although her voice and eyes were genuinely curious the entire time. "So... It's more a question of who you're talking to? I mean, you're used to talking to a certain person in a certain language, so you automatically do that. Like you usually talk to your brother in English so that's what you switch to automatically, even if you're not supposed to, because your grandparents are around?"

His suggestion of a translation spell gave her a pause, and her face scrunched up slightly in thought, eyebrows drawing together while she tried to recall if she'd ever heard of such a thing. "I... I don't think there is," she said, finally, her voice lilting up towards the end which made the statement sound more like a question. "I've never heard of anything like that. Of course that doesn't mean it doesn't exist, but... It sounds like such a handy spell that it sounds unlikely that it wouldn't have been mentioned anywhere." She frowned, then grinned. "Maybe we can invent one."

But first, they moved to things much more immediately exciting than inventing a spell in the future: Taekwondo. Her eyes lit up as she carefully listened to Aaron's explanations, then drew her eyebrows together in thought. She didn't actually want to learn to punch people, precisely, now that she thought about it. If nothing else, she'd soon be a lot more dangerous with her wand than her fists, anyway, and... she didn't see the appeal of hitting people. Even if it was for self-defense, she'd be much more likely to save herself by running, and causing someone pain just... didn't sound very fun. So, she didn't want to learn how to fight, she wanted to try Taekwondo. Why would she ever get into a physical fight, anyway? Words were her weapons of choice.

"I think I want to learn that routine if you can teach me that," she replied easily, words eager and smile bright. "That seems like a good place to start, right? Oh - the belt colours say something about how good you are, right? So white belt is for beginners? What's your colour?"
