The First Annual Running of the Cheeses

Elspeth stood at the top of the hill, inhaling the clear air deeply and basking in the warm glow of the sun on a cloudless day. The weather appeared perfect for a good, cheesy time. Though, after last night's lecture from the Heads of House, she had to admit she was a little nervous about the event today. While it was all happening out in the open on a sunny morning, a tricky setting for something to just sneak up on folks, she couldn't help but suddenly feel like the lives of those attending were at least partly in her hands should something go wrong... Elspeth shook her head lightly, trying to knock the thought out of her mind. She'd managed to survive this long into the school year unscathed. Why should today be any different?
There was a small table at the top of the hill with eight round cheese wheels waiting on it, a small placard in front of each to let the competitors know which was theirs.
Rainbow bunting, made from leftover Pride Month supplies, was hung parallel down the hill, creating a weak boundary for where the racing would (hopefully) be taking place, so that spectators would know where to sit for their own safety. She'd also brought a pile of blankets she'd scrounged up from her own collection and around the common room in case folks forgot to bring one of their own to sit on while they watched. Without a nice basket to put them in, and a table full of cheese, she'd decided to haphazardly pile them up on the ground next to the table. Not the most stunning display, but this was a one student show she was putting on here! The beauty of the cheese race was in its simplicity. All she'd had to do was procure some cheese. Now these students were going to do the real work of running after them down the hill to everyone's chagrin.@May Moonstar - Cheddar | @Lucille Williams - Gouda | @Cassandra Ironwoods - Camembert | @Asteria Knight - Camembert | @Anastasia Beckett - Brie | @Claudia Gears - Camembert | @Alina Rosier - Gouda | @Piérre Marchonné - Gouda
Elspeth exhaled. Professor Equinox would be dropping by to help watch over the match. There would be plenty of people watching and around. It was going to be a good day. How could it not, with so many lovely cheeses?

Hello Cheese Rollers and Cheese Enthusiasts alike! Welcome to the unsanctioned, unofficial First Annual Hogwarts Cheese Rolling Competition!
For those wishing to spectate, please feel free to come in, take a seat in the grass to the side, and enjoy!
For those daring contestants who are here to prove that they are the masters of dairy delights, I applaud your bravery and am excited for the race to get underway.
Format
There will be five rounds, each lasting one week. I will be coming in on SATURDAYS at 5pm Pacific Standard Time (CLICK HERE to find out when that is your time) to make the mod post. If you haven't made your move for the week, something delightful and hilarious will happen and you will be out of the race. No do-overs y'all. You're running after a cheese - this is fast paced life or death decision making time!
Each week all you have to do is make one decision: which direction do you want to push your cheese?Left, right, or continue forward. You are welcome to role play reactions to what's occurred, describe how you're trying to maintain control of your cheese, whatever you'd like. But the ONLY ACTION you can take that will affect the game is deciding whether you want to move LEFT, RIGHT, or FORWARD.
There is NO MAGIC USE allowed. The total time between your starting at the top of the hill and getting to the bottom will be somewhere between 30 and 60 seconds. There's no time for stopping to sling spells and let go of your cheese. If you're found to be casting spells, or trying to get folks on the sidelines to cast spells, you'll be out of the race.
Your evasiveness will determine your speed. Your accuracy will determine your control and accuracy over the cheese. Your strength and wisdom will aid you in checks against terrain. Your cheese also has special attributes that will aid you against certain terrain checks (depending on the type of cheese you've chosen).
At the end of each round, d20s will be rolled to determine all of the above and you'll be given a time score (for instance, if you make it through a round super fast with control of your cheese you may receive a time score of 5 seconds for the round, but if you lose control or bump into a rock that you weren't able to notice in time you may end up with a time score of 15 seconds for the round).
The person with the fastest time at the end of five rounds will be the winner of 10 chocolate frogs and the title of Hogwarts' Champion Cheese Roller.
SO. Cheese rollers! Please find your place at the starting line and let us know which direction you intend to push your cheese in when the games begin!
Next Mod Post will be June 27th at 5pm PDT.

The First Annual Running of the Cheeses
-------☆-------Claudia walked anxiously through the grounds to the hill where the cheese racing was to begin. It was a sunny morning and as the heat beat down on her black hair, Claudia shook her hands to loosen them up. She was overwhelmed by the pleasant smell of the cheeses and a wave of dread crashed over her. She had not come to win the race - with her meager strength Claudia knew that would be next to impossible - but she had not come to “have fun” either. Rather, Claudia had signed up on an impulse, and a chance to win a prize.
As Claudia climbed to the top of the hill, the smell of cheese grew stronger. Cheddar, Gouda, Camembert, and Brie - Claudia knew that those were the smells wafting through the air. Previous to the sign up, Claudia only knew two of those cheeses existed, and she had only tasted one. Yet there was only one reason she had chosen the cheese she did: it paired well with bread. That was all there was to it, and nothing else. She hoped that she had made a good choice, even though she doubted that the cheese type made a difference. If it did however, her Camembert cheese wouldn’t let her down. Or, at least, she hoped it wouldn’t.
When Claudia reached the summit, she scanned the area for the other contestants. She didn’t think she saw anyone she knew, and that’s was a good thing. She would rather not make a fool out of herself in front of an acquaintance - no matter how positive. Claudia’s eye focused razor-sharp on the cheeses resting peacefully on the grass. As she read each nameplate, she tried to commit each name to memory. May Moonstar, Lucille Williams, Cassandra Ironwoods, Asteria Knight, Anastasia Beckett, Alina Rosier, Piérre Marchonné. And there, nestled soundly between the names Anastasia Beckett and Alina Rosier, was her.
She quickly made a beeline for her nameplate and the cheese behind it. So that was what Camembert looked like. It was white, like she had imagined, but the white looked sort of powdery in her opinion. Like powdered sugar, she thought. Claudia stood awkwardly behind the nameplates and cheese and waited for the other competitors. Her anxiety had pushed her to arrive early, but as she stood still she immediately regretted it. Each minute she stood there was drawn out and made her body grow rigid. She could blame it on the nerves all she wanted, but there was a little twinge of excitement in her body.
Claudia tried to focus on something other than the nerves. The cheese, perhaps? She closed her eye and took a deep breath in from her nose. The cheese smell was tempting, and Claudia wanted to gobble up her Camembert. She wondered what Camembert tasted like. Was it good? Her mouth watered, and she had to force the saliva down with a swallow. Unconsciously, Claudia extended her hand toward the cheese before her. When she was within inches of it, she suddenly came to her senses and drew back.
What was she thinking? If she ate the cheese now, she wouldn’t have the chance to eat some chocolate frogs later! Even if she didn’t win, maybe they would allow her to eat the cheese afterwards. With the promise of cheese and chocolate, Claudia turned her mind to the race once again.
There were three direction she could choose from: right, straight forward, and left. She presumed most people would choose straight, and opted against it. Maybe the terrain in front of her was the hardest, as that direction was bound to be the most common. Claudia thought of the other two - left and right. Claudia had never been one to go with the General society, and right seemed like an obvious choice. Left it is then, she decided, I will go left. With her direction decided, Claudia’s mind turned toward her anxiety again as she scouted the land for the other contestants. If she was lucky, maybe she would see them approach.-------☆-------

The First Annual Running of the Cheeses
This morning had started out with an exciting owl from @Elspeth Gollens about coming and watching a cheese running contest. Alaric had grown up in a small mountain town in Vermont, USA, and he did not know what cheese running was. Even if he had been busy, he probably would have made time to show up just to satiate his sheer curiosity. This was why people would see the Ravenclaw Head of House strolling casually across the grounds with his parasol. Though it may be noted that he was not in his usual attire, no, the dhampir would be in a white sleeveless vest and brown pants it was bound to be warm out for him, and he enjoyed a breeze if there was one.

As he approached Elspeth and the table of cheeses, he would offer her a welcoming smile. “Good Morning, miss Gollens. Today is lovely! You will have to explain to me what is so fascinating about rolling cheese wheels, though.” He chuckled as he took a stand next to the girl. “Oh, do they win something?” He asked offhandedly wondering what kind of prizes the young first year might have come up with.
He looked over at @Claudia Gears, who was seemingly deep in thought, standing by her cheese, though he did not want to intimidate the contestants, especially ones he did not know too well. Certainly, having your Head of House around was something that might be considered intimidating, though, he rather hoped it wouldn’t be.

The First Annual Running of the Cheeses
Cheese rolling. Everyone had to have their talents, right? Actually, Alina Rosier thought it sounded like good humorous fun and wanted to participate. This was a way to mark the end of her First Year at Hogwarts and make it memorable!
She had researched. No one had died from cheese rolling - at least not officially on record. There were rumors that centuries ago a runner dropped dead after a race but surely there wasn't any truth to that. There was also rumor that in 1982 there were some runners struck by lightning but all were okay and once that storm lifted, the cheese run continued. Alina looked up to the sky to read the conditions.
She had done her training. Starting two entire days ago, Alina started stretching and running downhill to try and work on her balance. Yes, if she was going to do this, she was going to take it seriously...as seriously as one could when it came to cheese rolling.
She looked down to make sure her boots were tied nice and tight and the laces weren't going to trip her up. She was ready. She did one last stretch before getting ready to chase her wheel of gouda down the hill upon the grounds of the school.
And then it started and off she darted forward, hurrying down the hill from sheer speed and gravity alike, picking up momentum.

The First Annual Running of the Cheeses
Today is the day that they will participate on an event that surely will bring fun chaotic mess. When Cash sign up their name for the event, they thought why not. After all the eventful (whether it is catastrophic one or good moments), Cash want to finished their First school year on a good note. That being said, today Cash know that it will be sunny and need a lot of room to move.
They decided to wear something practical. Today they decided to wear light blue t-shirt pair with short blue pants. To completed their look they wear white sneakers and their beloved sunglasses perched on their nose. Then they off to the ground where the event will be located. Upon stepping onto the ground the smell of cheese greet their nose.
The ground is colorful thank to the Pride event that took place some days prior this event. Cash then walks toward where the cheese wheel located. A various type of wheel cheeses on display. This event is held by one Elspeth Gollens. The same girl that Cash bullied taunted. How ironic was that. Cash see the hostess for this race and Professor Equinox, holding a nice design of umbrella.
Cash then scan their name on the placards. From the seven placards on the tables, Cash only know three other names. Cash met May at the disastrous Blossom Ball, the girl being Blake's date. Met Anastasia Beckett during a game that Alan host awhile back ago and Lucille on the same club both of the Firsts Year in. Cash then walks toward Professor Equinox.
"Good day isn't it, Professor?"They greet the man. Their Spanish accent seeped out. Good thing they still wear their sunglasses. The sun shine brightly above their heads. They stand on top of the ground. From where they stand, when they will roll the cheese wheel it will going down the hill. Cash smirk at the terrain.
After Cash greet Professor Equinox, they walk back again to the table. The direction for this event is only goes left, right and forward. There no magic allowed, which make this event more fun to participate in. Cash picks up the Camembert cheese wheel and put down on the grass. The cheese rest nicely against the green eyes girl knee and the edge of the table to prevent the wheel going down before the race even begin.
Cash took off their sunglasses and put it on the table on top where their placard name located. They rolled the cheese to where the starting line is. The other two contestants already on the starting line. At this point, Cash competitive side rose. They survived the Relay Race. They already passed the Relay Race with excellent score.
Then this event that need upper body strength and also their endurance, will be easy.

Back home, Lucille was never the sporty type, but ever since she had actually succeeded in those Quidditch tryouts the young eagle had become much more confident in her physical strength. This was likely the only reason why she was about to try her luck at "The First Annual Hogwarts Cheese Rolling Competition". "What a mouth-full."Lucille thought to herself as she began to roll her cheese to the starting line. Although she slightly remembered Alina, Cassie, and May, Lucille knew this was also a little opportunity to meet a some other students. Besides, if she didn't win those chocolate frogs then at least she could make a few friends while eating cheese. "Maybe the winner will share the frogs."Lucille thought hopefully. While the young witch tried her best to focus on the cheesy goal at hand Lucille gave a cute wave to the little 'crowd' of students coming to watch the event. " Alright then,"The eagle thought to herself." Which way shall I go?" The only options were left, right, and straight. After a small moment of silence Lucille began to roll her cheese the right way. After a bit of a bumpy start she couldn't even tell who was winning at that point in time. " WEEEEEE! "Lucille yelled out happily as she held onto the cheese even tighter then before.
Action: Going right.

Asteria looked up at the hill in front of her. Why had she decided to do this again? It had seemed like a fun idea when she saw the poster in the great hall but now that it was actually happening, she was thinking a bit differently. It still seemed fun, just a bit nerve-wracking as well. How heavy was a wheel of cheese even? They looked bigger than she had imagined them being so they were probably pretty heavy as well then. Could she manage to keep control of one of those things? At least if she lost control of it, it wouldn't crash into her. She couldn't say the same for anyone who happened to be in front of the wheel if that actually happened.
Turning her attention back to the hill in front of her, Asteria sprinted to the top where she could see some other competitors already present. She noticed her Head of House was already there, along with one of her dorm mates, Elspeth, who she waved a quick hello too before scanning the nameplates, looking for the one that was hers.
Once she found it, she readied herself to roll the wheel. As soon as the race started, Asteria took off, giving her cheese a push to start it rolling straight down the hill. This whole cheese-rolling was harder than she thought it would be. Hopefully, she could just control the wheel until the end of the hill.

Ana had utterly and completely given up on life. That was the only possible explanation for her signing up for something called the running of the cheeses. This was merely the latest in a long line of random activities that she was partaking in to avoid thinking about the Blossom Ball. Still, this was by far the randomest and possibly signaled to her that she probably should deal with her feelings and thoughts instead of keeping herself insanely busy to avoid thinking. Nah.
She found a place card with her name on it between a Claudia Gears and and Asteria Knight. She glanced at the others who had opted to roll a cheese and noted that most of them had opted for Gouda or Camembert. That was probably a bad sign, if one chose to look at it that way. Ana chose to look at it as though it meant that she was clearly the wisest one here. Although, that was rather like saying she was the shortest giant, seeing as she was spending her free time playing with cheese.
When the race began, she contemplated her strategy for a moment, before darting straight forward. It wouldn't do her much good to try to take out an opponent or two by going to the side, since there were several others that would be free to run.
Long story short, I survived

@Elspeth GollensCheese, a beautiful piece of the dairy world. Churn milk hard and long enough, it'll clump together and then form a luxurious, creamy ball of salty and slightly sweet goodness. And today Piérre was going to race with one! A lump of cheese that he had casually picked up and rolled about in his hands as he walked to the starting line. Typically Piérre was a boy of many words, but today, after spending several days of training with cheese, running like a chicken with its head cut off, and practicing his evasive maneuvers, Piérre was up and ready to roll, ready to win this race and roll over anyone who got in his way!
Without much interaction with others, Piérre lined himself up on the starting line, glancing briefly at his opponents, his piece of goud gouda cheese clenched in his left hand. He was ready to roll it and then run as fast as his long, slightly lanky, legs would carry him.
When the whistle sounded, Piérre started to roll his spherical queso, before quickly ducking his head down in the runner's stance and beginning to sprint, his body taking over as he let his mind clear. The only thing that Piérre was focusing on was the air hitting his cheeks, the wind rustling through his hair, and his piercing green eyes searching for any obstacle that could possibly impede his path of attack.
