"Or perhaps in Slytherin,
You'll make your real friends,
Those cunning folk use any means,
To achieve their ends."
—The Sorting Hat

The Great Hall is a large room with four long tables where students of each House sit during the day and at mealtimes. A majestic enchanted ceiling that mirrors the outside weather is watching over people in the room.

Four long tables for the four houses. Close to the doors from the Entrance Hall is Slytherin's, in between the badgers and the birds. On their right - towards the right side of the room - is the Hufflepuff table, whilst to their left - towards the middle of the room - is the Ravenclaw table.

At the Slytherin table, sit the students from the Noble House, where they can discuss their next mischief around the finest meals. Rumour has it that the Slytherin house has a strange affiliation with spiders and the dungeons, though only the older years really know why. First years will quickly learn that they need to be prepared. This journey may not be easy but ambition is not necessarily easy.

The Slytherin Table 2026-2027
The applause rang on faintly as Maheen made her way towards the Slytherin table. She walked steadily despite being swarmed by feelings, relieved now and excited.

Maheen found herself a place to sit and sat there, arranging herself calmly and looking around for a moment.

So this is my house.

There were more people than she had thought at the table, from all the years. The older Slytherins talked among themselves in an assured tone, looking at the newcomers from time to time with faces that showed amusement or indifference. The silver goblets shone like mirrors from the reflection of the candles hanging high above them.

The first thing that presented itself to her unexpectedly was a warm dish, and after that came roasted potatoes, vegetables, fresh bread, and roast chicken.

She smiled inwardly.

Magic could always catch her off guard.

With the conversations having started once again around the table, Maheen watched people more than she talked, carefully noting their personalities. There would be time enough for making friends, rivals, and impressions.

Though deep down, she was a little nervous. She may not show it, but she had this deep sense of anxiety that people won't like her. Her knee bounced under the table, wondering if she would make a friend soon. No matter how much she liked being alone, she always liked good company.

The Slytherin Table 2026-2027

Eveline approached the Slytherin table with her chin high, her back straight, and her steps carefully measured. She didn't quicken her pace to avoid the older students' eyes as she passed. She reveled in the attention. Confidence, her mother had assured her, was key. If she proved herself to appear unshakable, she would be unshakable. Powerful. Ambitious.

She sat regally at the end of the group of upperclassmen, one leg crossing onto her knee as she surveyed the fellow first years as they continued to join them with each new Slytherin sorting. She applauded when necessary, but only short, polite claps. Her eyes traveled along the Great Hall, but her lips never moved. No smile as another student joined the table of green and silver. No display of surprise as classmates defied her expectations with their sortings. Simply calm observance.

The food appeared in the golden plates alongside carafes of some sort of juice, water, and whatever other beverages were allowed to the students of Hogwarts. Eveline's eyes skipped the food, instead landing on one of her fellow first years who'd been sorted just before her. @Maheen Ali, if Eveline could remember her name correctly.

"The house elves have outdone themselves, haven't they?" Eveline asked politely, nodding toward the bountiful feast laid bare before them. "I think I'd like to learn more about how they make this happen. Moving all the food up to the Great Hall on such a scale. It's an impressive bit of magic, I think."

She looked back at Maheen from the food.

"Eveline Ashcombe. And you are...?" Eveline asked.

She'd heard the girl's name perfectly clearly, but it was only polite to introduce herself properly.

Charlotte, still fighting back tears, walked past the other students to some empty seats. As she sat down and took a deep breath (so no one would notice how unwell she was), she noticed two girls beside her. One of them, whom she only remembered as Eveline, was asking a dark-haired girl her name. Charlotte observed them both more closely. Eveline looked as if she desperately wanted to prove that she was confident and ambitious. She sat on the bench with her legs crossed and her back a little too straight. The other girl actually seemed quite nice. She just seemed a bit nervous. While Charlotte filled up on her favorite food, schnitzel and fries, she thought about what awaited her. Her father had told her that most of the evil wizards came from Slytherin and that Slytherin was known for nasty bullies. Charlotte didn't really like these prejudices of her father's at all. But now the most terrible thoughts came to her: What if he was right? What if the house with the worst roots really was Slytherin? And she'd ended up there of all places! Then she shook her head. There was no point in worrying about such things now. Instead, she should enjoy her meal.

Maheen had barely settled when a girl spoke beside her. She turned her head, meeting her gaze with curiosity.

The first thing she noticed was the unmistakable confidence she possessed. Every movement seemed deliberate, from the way she held her posture to the calmness in her voice. She looked as though she'd expected to be sitting on the emerald table all along.

She looks like the very embodiment of a Slytherin.

Maheen couldn't help but admire it. She had always imagined Slytherins possessing that kind of commanding presence. But then again, she hadn't expected herself to be sitting on the same table as this girl named @Eveline Ashcombe. She felt...different than her. Though not lacking in confidence, nor ambition, she preferred listening before speaking, watching before acting. Perhaps it wasn't a weakness. Or atleast she hoped.

Perhaps Slytherin isn't just one kind of a person.

That thought eased her mind a little.

'I'm Maheen Ali.' She smiled politely, a quiet, shy smile. 'It's nice to meet you. And yes, it really is impressive.' Her gaze drifted to the feast spread across the table. 'I suppose Hogwarts has far more secrets than just loads of food on the table.'

Then her gaze drifted to the other girl, whom she'd caught glancing in their direction earlier. She'd already forgotten her name, being bad with remembering them. The girl seemed a little nervous, too, as she filled her plate up to the brim. She didn't judge. She might be doing the same right now if she weren't wondering what to eat first.

Then she looked at Eveline once more, mind scrambling to continue the small talk.

'So...what are you looking forward to the most? Here, at Hogwarts?'

The Slytherin Table 2026-2027

Eveline watched @Maheen Ali, satisfied with her agreement that the bit of magic performed by the House Elves was, in fact, impressive. Transfiguration was supposed to be quite hard, Eveline knew, so magic on this scale was amazing. Then again, Mother had always said that House Elves have different sorts of magic than people.

"I think," Eveline said slowly, considering the question. "I'm most looking forward to seeing what all the fuss is about. There are other schools in the world, but my parents insist that Hogwarts is like no other. It's become a sort of legend in my home."

Eveline reached for a decanter and filled the empty goblet in front of her with juice, sipping it slowly. She was trying to get a good read on Maheen. The other witch was a Slytherin, like Eveline, but Eveline wanted to know more. About her family. Were they purebloods, on Eveline's level, or would Maheen need a bit of gentle coaxing to reach her potential?

It was funny that, after years of etiquette and social lessons from her mother, every bit of it was slipping through Eveline's fingers like sand as soon as she was in an actual conversation. She decided the best way to pry would be to ask polite, curious questions.

"I expect it was the same with you? Hearing all about Hogwarts, that is."

There. That was perfect. If the girl hadn't heard all that much about Hogwarts growing up, then Eveline would know that she either wasn't, in fact, a pureblood, or her parents attended a different magical school. If she had heard loads about Hogwarts growing up, then Eveline would know where she stood.
