Locking The Doors Main Story Closed

Friday, 19th June 2020, Dinner Time
It was shortly before dinner time. The Heads of House had finished their meeting moments earlier, arriving together at the Great Hall. Together, they stood behind the Professor table. Elaine was wearing the same as usual, dressed in dark robes with a high neck and long sleeves. They were a shade of red to represent her house. Caradoc went for a rather bright and easily recognised Hufflepuff sweater - for rather obvious reasons - with beige trousers and brown shoes. Hjørdis was in a long black sleeveless dress with a golden snake ornament on the back that draped on the floor even in her heels. Alaric was smartly dressed in his dark waistcoat and a matching pair of black trousers, with a blue shirt and his trademark bronze pocket watch showing.

Within a few moments, students would start to flood through the doors of the hall. Students were free to sit down and just wait.  The other professors should be there shortly after too. Normally, everyone would just eat and go. But today was a little different. The Heads of House had an important announcement to make. With the disappearance of Lear, they were forced to make the announcement together, as acting Headmasters and Headmistresses together. It had been a while since anyone had actually seen Lear, though people have claimed to have received letters from him. They had no choice but to address the school today. It was not Lear's disappearance that had prompted this. Even though they did not know where he was, they knew he was somewhere. If he was not, the wards would have disappeared.

Lear was somewhere. And he was alive. It was just a matter of finding him. Caradoc and Hjørdis had searched the dungeons, going deep within it. Though they had not found Lear, they came across the darkness that lurked within it. Hjørdis suspected he was deep within the undergrounds of the castle. There were many rooms that were hard to find or new secrets. There was more than what people knew. They had heard the rumours of the Chamber of Secrets or the former Philosopher's Stone Chambers but, as she found out recently, the dungeons were even deeper and greater than she could have imagined.

A few professors entered the great hall, followed shortly by one Lazarus Plott. It had been almost a full academic year and he was still here. The truth was, none of the Heads of Houses trusted him. Not even slightly. There was no trust between them.

Alaric pointed out the timing of his arrival and Lear's disappearance being far too closely matched. Lear disappeared and Plott stayed? No good, not at all. It was also a little odd that Plott had attended the masquerade ball on Halloween in a full suit of armour - Solomon Lear's signature outfit. But the armour was different. Elaine and Hjørdis had even heard the voice. They knew it was not Lear under the armour but rather Plott. Strange that the man seemed almost be impersonating the headmaster of Hogwarts before sticking around for so many months as though he wanted to replace him. Caradoc did not like how Plott seemed to be hovering around one of his Hufflepuffs. Like the papa badger that he was, Caradoc refused to let Plott near him.

The only reason Plott was still permitted to be here was because they could not remove him. The ministry had permitted him to stay and the only one who could fight that was the Headmaster. Without Lear present, they could not actively kick him out. The Department of Magical Education ruled that Plott, the Ilvermorny Headmaster, could not be removed for 'fear of damaging international relationships between the magical schools'. They went as far as to say that 'Hogwarts should be grateful that Headmaster Plott was willing to stay and help run the school', which was utterly ridiculous. However, since Ilvermorny had a deputy headmistress who had taken the role of acting headmistress for the US school, Plott was able to stay freely in the castle. He was only permitted to stay for the remainder of the term, however, which meant that his days were fast running out and the Heads were counting down the days till he left.

Lazarus Plott sat down on the far end of the Professor table, towards the Hufflepuff end, joining a few of the other professors. Shortly after, the students flooded through the great hall with their usual attitude, seating themselves down at their own house tables. The tables were set but there was no food yet. The four Head of Houses waited patiently till every student and professor was present.

Elaine was the first of them to speak. "Quiet, please." She did not have to raise her voice, simply spoke, her tone firm and deliberate. She wasn't one for many words, both inside and outside her classroom, and lacked the flair for giving big speeches or making grand announcements. The Gryffindor Head of House was a sombre witch, but maybe it was her austereness that was needed this evening, would help to make the students understand that the four of them were quite serious.

"As some of you have already noticed, Headmaster Lear is currently not in attendance at the castle." The Headmaster had been missing for over half a year's time by now, there was no sense in pretending that he was just hiding in some room, especially given the recent events including his office that had been broken into and vandalized. "He is temporarily unavailable due to pressing personal matters he has to take care of, but his absence has no negative effect on the quality of your education or the proceedings of your final exams. Come September, when you will be back at Hogwarts for your next term, we fully expect him to be with us again." It was a stretch; not an outward lie because they did indeed hope to find Solomon Lear and return him to his position during the summer, but still too close for comfort to Elaine. She didn't enjoy making a habit of lying to those in her care.

"In consideration of recent events, however, there will be some changes made to daily life at Hogwarts to guarantee the safety of all of you. I, therefore, ask you to pay close attention now."

Her gaze was intent, dark eyes scrutinizing all of the students, or at least it would have appeared that way. And if her eyes lingered the longest at the table that was filled with her lion cubs then it was surely only because they held a special place in her heart and not in any way because some of them had a penchant for enjoying getting into situations that held the possibility of being lethal to them.

Stepping forward, the head of Ravenclaw caught everyone's attention. "Effective immediately and from here on out. All Dhampir students are required to report to me every morning before breakfast and every evening before supper. You will be given a drink to satisfy cravings, and this will prevent you from being able to be race baited. This is a result of what happened at the Masquerade ball on Halloween. It has taken time to set up because of coordinating with the Ministry. There are no exceptions if you expect to remain at this school." Alaric spoke up, getting the Dhampir matter out of the way. They were race baited at the Halloween ball by other students. Perhaps it was ignorance, perhaps it was fear. But whatever it was, it was not acceptable. This change would help Dhampir students to regain control. It was a simple method but it was similar to how the Werewolves were given wolfsbane in line with the moon cycle, without fail, under supervision.

In the past few months, two of the houses had been attacked in their common room. It started with Slytherin. Their common room was overrun by spiders within moments, trapped and locked inside. The school was still recovering, when Hufflepuff became the next victim. The badger common room exploded, setting everything alight. Both incidents took place in the middle of the night. It could no longer be ignored. The other houses could be next or one of the previous victims could end up targeted again. There was absolutely no way of knowing. But either way, it was becoming more and more apparent that the school was not safe. Things had to change.

A group of moronic (in the Slytherin Head of House's opinion, anyway) students organised a secret ball after they explicitly said that the ball was cancelled for safety. And like sheep, other students blindly followed them into danger - which might be even more idiotic in her opinion. But, as expected, the secret ball went horribly gone. Just to make matters worse, a large group of students - mostly Ravenclaws - also ventured into the forbidden forest in the past few weeks. It was both reckless and terrifying.

Shortly before the students stupidly walked into the forbidden forest - which was clearly forbidden for a reason - three professors had been attacked in there by a hag. It was suspected that a hag coven was present but they had no idea where. Professors tried to keep the students out of the forest, for their safety, to keep them away from the hags. But obviously, students did not listen. It was at this point that they came to the realisation that they had to be told. Hjørdis sighed, this was why she hated working with children. There was a limit to what they could do when students ventured out on their own. But alas, they had no choice but to admit the truth. She had been one of the professors to push for it. Perhaps they deserved to know the truth, perhaps not. But they needed it. It was the only way to attempt to protect them.

Caradoc stepped forward, speaking up next. He had the most experience with the hags. He was one of the three that had been attacked. "One matter we must address, is the presence of hags around our school." Caradoc's face was devoid of all joy as he spoke about the crones of old. "Some time ago, we have discovered that a coven has taken up residence in the forbidden forest. We have enough reason to believe that they are behind several attacks on this school by now. The part-giants attacking our ball in October and the two attacks on the common rooms all show evidence of their involvement. We will be in contact with the ministry in order to deal with this issue. As we can not allow for these offences to continue." He cleared his throat. "The Forbidden Forest is dubbed forbidden, for a damn good reason!" He raised his voice for all to be clear. "Stay out of it, stay away from it. We are trying to protect you, but we can not protect against your own stupidity. Please listen to me, when I say that you need to stay inside."

The hags was news to some but it was certainly not a shock to everyone. "As such, we are cancelling summer boarding at Hogwarts," Hjørdis spoke up next with her usual blank expression and matter of fact tone, "I want you to listen to me very carefully when I say this..." She paused for a moment, looking around with her eyes narrowing into a glare, "This will not be a repeat of April. We cancelled the blossom ball for your safety and students who chose to ignore that now understand why we cancelled it. If you were not there, ask your peers if you need a reminder." She said pointedly. Students organised the event ignoring their instructions after it was formerly cancelled. This time, there will not be a repeat of that. No student would be permitted to stay in Hogwarts.

She saw a few Hufflepuffs - likely members of the Quidditch team - looking around with panic, about to throw up a fit. Her gaze silenced them, "For those participating in the International Quidditch Tournament between Wizarding Schools, we will be relocating to London temporarily. This will take place until the 20th of July. After which, you will be sent home. You will find full information about the event on the bulletin board located outside." She said, cancelling their plans of staying in Hogwarts over the summer. There were many that did not have a proper home to go to - or perhaps had one they did not want to go back to. However keeping them on the grounds when there was no need or guarantee of safety was foolish. In the interest of their own safety, they would have to return to their legal guardians. Hogwarts was first and foremost a school, in any case, not an orphanage.

Alaric would look out over the students with a somber expression upon the usual happy Head of House’s face. He did not like having to do things like this, but it was for the best of the students, and that was what they needed to do the most. Protect the students. He would wait silently while anyone else spoke. When it was his turn, he cleared his throat. “Ladies and Gentleman, please understand that we are trying to protect you at all costs, because of this there are going to be some new rules and guidelines. All Prefects and professors will be patrolling in at least groups of two. Curfew has now changed. All students will be expected to be in their common rooms by eight in the evening, and you are not permitted to leave them again until seven in the morning unless it is a state of an emergency. Unless patrolling, all Head of Houses will be accessible through their offices off of the common rooms. We also ask that students travel in groups if possible, for safety.”

He paused, looking over the students hoping this was sinking in, and if it wasn’t, it might now. Alaric’s voice became sterner than anyone in this school had ever heard it before. “If anyone of you is caught endangering the lives of your fellow students because you are refusing to follow the new rules, please note that you will be reviewed, your guardians owled, and expulsion will be on the table as a possible punishment.”

Time and time again, Hogwarts had been attacked. From the Slytherin Head of Houses's perspective, it was usually due to a student starting a fire in the middle of the ballroom or students breaking curfew. But things had changed. Things were getting worse, more coordinated and sadly, they were no longer because of a single child misbehaving. From the information that the team had gathered, the school was in danger. Every single day that passed where nothing happened, was a day of peace and quiet. It felt like they were pretty much just counting down the days till the next attack.

Hjørdis wanted to prepare for it, as much as they could. But there was a limit to what four people could do. They could not see everything, be everywhere, or fix it all without the cooperation of each and every being in the school.

"With that in mind," Hjørdis spoke up again, "We will be hiring two new staff members in the coming days. A Caretaker, who will assist with internal patrols as well as any necessary punishments and, a Grounds Keeper to assist with external patrols and ensure that none of you decide to wander into a clearly forbidden forest again." She avoided making a pointed glance at anyone.

She paused for a moment before looking over to her own house table. The Slytherins that decided it was appropriate to hold a party in the middle of the night, and ended up waking up several housemates who panicked thinking that they were under attack again. "Furthermore, if you're out of your dorms and making noise after ten pm, I expect it to be because there's been another attack. If we catch you after ten because you've decided to have yet another party, you will face the same consequences." She added, knowing full well that the Slytherins needed that lesson after their 'celebration' party that turned into chaos in the middle of the night.

Hjørdis placed her arms behind her back, looking over the room, "All of the changes explained today will continue into the new school year, for those returning. They will be in place until further notice." She added, making it clear that the new curfew, the patrolling rules, the off limited areas, the changes to the dhampirs' routines and so on will continue until they say otherwise. Students were advised to travel in groups, for their own safety. They were given these rules for their own safety and if they did not understand that, then there would be repercussions. In all honesty, Hjørdis thought it better to expel the students likely to get themselves killed than to actually allow that to happen. They would lack the essential education they required and miss out on that or have to relocate to another school but at least they would be alive. Expulsion was nicer than death.

His voice would now return to the normal tones that the students were used to. “Finally, I would ask that if you see something, you say something. None of us four care how trivial you think it might be. If you see or hear something that you think is wrong, you come to one of the professors or your Head of House as soon as possible. Thank you.”

In times like this, Hjørdis was genuinely not sure who to trust but she had to do whatever she could with whatever information she was given. Some students had willingly come forward, sharing things that they might know. Hopefully, Alaric's words would encourage them to share their information, no matter how trivial.

The Head of Hufflepuff stepped forward, hands folded behind his back. The man brought up the faintest of smiles. "Be safe children. Please heed our warnings. We are only trying to look out for you and your fellow students." Caradoc would swallow and sigh before he spoke again. There was a sadness to him, perhaps disappointment? With a slightly tilted head, the man's smile would widen but not grow into a grin. "How about some food after all that, ey?" He nodded to himself as if he needed to convince everyone of the fact. "Hang in there for these last few days. Enjoy your meals." Caradoc nodded once more before stepping back and walking off to find himself a seat.

Once Caradoc had finishing speaking, everyone else found themselves a seat too. With a snap of his fingers, the huge feast quickly started to appear and dinner started as usual on each of the five tables. Whilst they did want everyone to understand the severity of the situation, they also did not want to terrify people. However, the students deserved to know the truth and it was this truth that they hoped would keep them safe - or at least, prevent them from organising secret events, running into the forest, walking into dangerous situations without help...

For now, however, it was just time to eat and to forget about everything that went wrong. Spend some time with their friends before the new rules were implemented. Once they finished their meals, each house would be escorted back to their common room by their house prefects or professors, or the head of house.

If they had any questions or wanted someone to talk to, it was best to go to their head of house in private. As Alaric said, they would be present in their office and available for any students who wished to talk to them.

Summer was coming, and everything was so cheerful. Of course, the main event was the Drumstrang vs Hufflepuff match, and May was more nervous than exited. If Serena Towers failed, May would have to come into the match as seeker. And she couldn't just think about what was going to happen if she failed. Still, she was exited to see her fellow Hufflepuffs play, so she conversed freely about the theme. She ate her potatoes gaily, until she finished up, and everyone in the room had also finished. Then, the professors were standing. They had a serious look, unlike the other days, and the Gryffindor Head of House began to talk...

May had her attention fully on the professor and what she was saying. It was of course, not personal matters. A lot of people knew that. May knew that odd things were happening at the school, and she had experienced them herself. Of course, the professors were upset with the Blossom Ball, but they needn't tell more secrets. If they wanted their students safety, they would need to tell the truth. Otherwise, the students might get suspicious.
When the subject of summer camp was risen, May gasped of horror. No summer camp? What was that? May couldn't just think about not having her first summer camp. Her first summer camp, ruined! May wanted to cast a curse at the professor, but May knew she would get expelled. She rolled her eyes at the words of caretaker and grounds keeper. But something crossed her mind. No Quiddich? No, May was wrong. They were going to play Quiddich. But it was more lame. Much more lame. No summer camp, no summer camp, no summer camp wandered her mind as she listened to Hjørdis Jensen talk.

When food appeared, Mayndidnt want to eat. She still had her arms folded and glared at Hørdis Jensen while others, more cheerful people, ate.

Elspeth made her way into the Great Hall chatting with another Ravenclaw student a bit absently about summer plans. She was excited to get home and see her parents again, after such a long time away since winter break. Though, she still wasn't entirely sure what, if anything, to tell her parents about her time at Blossom Ball... the memories of the screams she heard there still ringing through her ears on occasion, waking her up in the middle of the night. At least it was summer and the fireplaces were out around school so she didn't, yet, have to encounter the site of flames again. As much as she'd been choking down those visions and trying to pretend she was okay, Elspeth knew that she wasn't. But telling her parents didn't seem like the best decision either, what with their already overbearing nature and tendency to worry about her. Hearing that she'd voluntarily run into the stands to try and help people when there was a clear and present danger might be enough for both of them to want to pull her from the school entirely. No... best to just try and have a quiet summer at home with them.

As she took her seat, Elspeth could hear the murmuring around the room pick up as students awaited the arrival of their dinner food. Normally the heads of house didn't wait until every single student was in the room to begin service, so tonight felt a little off. Were they all going to be given simultaneous detention together for what had transpired? She began squeezing her left index finger between her right thumb and palm. Crap... crap crap crap I was there. I wasn't even there to party! But they won't care about that.... you're going to get detention to and it's all because you wanted to play hero. Without your wand. Like you even have talents to help save people with! You just opened a broom closet! Literally anyone could have done that but it had to be you and now you're going to get chewed out at the end of your very first year here. Great work genius. She shook her head a little, trying to quiet her inner monologue. No, they couldn't possibly give the entire school detention. Surely not every student had gone, and besides, she was fairly certain no professors had seen her up in the air with the Hufflepuff girl who'd saved her.

But the murmuring quieted down until the room felt heavy with inevitable bad news. She knew that the professors must be peeved off about the dance, but this felt... different. Her eyes started to look around the room to see if any students appeared to have gone missing or been seriously hurt or... something. The truth was, she'd been a bit wrapped up in all of her own things this year and hadn't paid much attention to what had been happening in and around the school. Her eyes darted trying to find answers to a puzzle she didn't have any of the pieces for.

The Head of Gryffindor house spoke, immediately capturing Elspeth's attention (she'd not admit it in front of her friends, but she was quite nervous around Professor Pendrast who'd always seemed a little too adept with the Dark Arts for her taste). She sat and listened to all of the news of what had happened so far this year while she'd been too busy with her head in a book or dealing with her own sad sap story that now seemed very small and trivial in comparison. The professors were scared. Sure, they were annoyed and disappointed and angry. But all she could see when she looked at them was how they appeared genuinely worried for the safety of their students. If they were scared for their students here... Hogwarts was supposed to be one of the safest places in the whole world. She shuddered to think about this trip to London the school was going to be taking. Wouldn't they only be more vulnerable there?

Why weren't they all being evacuated? Should she try and get her parents to pick her up from school early? Muggle schools didn't have to worry about this kind of stuff. They'd close down for as little as snow on the ground. Her mind wandered to the school that she was supposed to have attended this year. Were they worried about hags and fire and being surrounded by geography that actively wanted to kill them?

As the food appeared, Elspeth continued to sit quietly, just staring at her plate and wondering where the danger was now. Was it out in the forest? Was it up in the Ravenclaw common room ready to strike as it had with Slytherin and Hufflepuff? Was it waiting, just outside the doors, to come in and attack everyone as they all sat there together? Her stomach was twisted up in a knot, and the idea of eating was beyond her. Her blank stare enough to let anyone sitting around her know that she wasn't in a good place just then.

Opeila of course had noticed that Headmaster Lear was not in the school. She had only seen him very few times after the sorting and eventually he just didn't show up at all anymore. The Slytherin didn't know the headmaster very well, so it had no impact on her life, but now when the Head of Houses spoke to them, she felt very naive once more. How did she not find it suspicious that there had been all sorts of attacks as the headmaster had disappeared?

Gryffindor's Head of house ensured them, that the danger would have no negative impact on their education. That was a good thing.
Opeila had to admit, she had almost forgotten what the main goal of her going to Hogwarts was. She was here to learn magic, to be taught.
Not to solve the strange mysteries that seemed to appear everywhere. Opeila would focus more on schoolwork again. The holidays were close, but she had still some things to work on.

The Head of Ravenclaw was next to speak. He announced new rules for dhampirs. Automatically, Opeila's gaze wandered down Slytherin table until she had found Nico, to see the prefect's reaction.
To the first year this was not interesting. This was about dhampirs, nothing for her. She had not attended the Masquerade Ball in October, so she had never even spent a thought on shaming dhampirs for what they were.

Sure, she had not been nice to Nico, but it had been a mere harsh analyzation of the prefects behaviour. One that the prefect had apparently taken very personal. Opeila didn't really care. They all had their package to carry, the dhampir girl needed to grow a shell, if she wanted to command people around beyond what her position permitted in the future. Opeila would not have it.

Opeila listened up again when Professor Browne spoke up. She had talked to this Professor before, given him information and he had asked her to keep her eyes open for him.
He said something that was entirely new to the little girl. There were hags around the school? Opeila exchanged a look with the person opposite her. A boy, she knew him. He had crashed into the stands of the Training Pitch with his broom. Adonis. "They let hags live in the forest? But they eat children, don't they?" It was no scared question. Opeila simply could not understand it. If there were so many threats pushing onto the school, why didn't they eliminate them one by one? Wouldn't all the teachers be able to force the hags to go? Especially if the hags were involved in attacks?
The Professor emphasised, that the forest was forbidden, that the students were supposed to stay away from it. "People entered the forest?", she murmured, asking no one specifically now. And there she had thought that she was naive. Suddenly she was sure that she was just offered a connection. An important one. One she had not grasped yet.

Frowning she turned her head and stared at the wood of the table. What had she just missed? The hags. They had been involved... in the attacks on the common rooms. Opeila's eyes widened in shock. The spiders. Of course, that was one of the attacks. An attack she had suspected Vladimir for. But had she been wrong then? Or... Or was he possibly working with them. And only he or... Victor and Marion. Who were both cold and light. Was that the influence of the hags?

The horror of this possible connection she had just made was written all over her face as she looked down the table to find either Jack, Flash, Selim. Flash and Jack knew that Vladimir had been in the common room.
If she was able to make eye contact with one or more of them, she would hold it long enough for them to know that something was not normal.

Then she would turn back to the Head of Houses. She hoped for Professor Browne to turn into her direction. Only for a second... The fear was clearly visible on her face. Had she not just a few days ago sent Vladimir an invitation to join their tent? Terrible, this was terrible.
She looked to Adonis now. He didn't know. Opeila was not sure if she should tell him. She didn't want to scare the boy.

She almost missed the scolding that now came from her head of house's side. It seemed so unimportant right now.
Opeila needed to talk to Flash. Or Jack. Or Selim. Or all of them.
With a small, unreal smile, she turned to Adonis again. "I guess I had that one coming...", she commented on the scolding of Professor Jensen.

Together with her Slytherin peers, they were summoned to a special edition of their evening dinner. Nico decided to wear her usual school uniform, just because she wanted to represent her House. Her casual consisted out of blue colour combo's which... leaned more towards the Ravenclaw colours. Her hair hanging loose over her shoulders, gently swaying with every step she took.

Walking nearly to the full front of the Hall to sit near the head of the table, she watched all four Head of Houses and this... person she remembers seeing at the Halloween Party once and who also was the commentator from their last Quidditch game. His style was rather.. flashy. In an odd but fashionable way. Why was he still here, actually? Didn't the Ilvermony students leave a whole while ago? Blinking in slight confusion at that fact, she carefully slid down at her table, stroking her robes in place. Resting her arms, crossed in an elegant manner infront of her, she turned slightly towards the main table of the Professors (Head of Houses). There was... a somber aura revolving them. Not that she could see this with supernatural powers. But she had a hunch. With the latest things that had been happening, it was inevitable that they'd speak up about this.

Only giving her peers a few glances, Nico put her full attention on the Mother of Sneks and other. As soon as they mentioned the absence of Headmaster Lear, an uneasy feeling hit her, once again. Was it bad that she could barely remember Solomon's face? She could remember only seeing him once at the Blossom Ball. He stood there, overseeing the snacks and children arriving at the dancefloor. Back then the dhampir was but a lonesome creature. Right, she got ditched that day aswell... Great memories. The short time Nico made eyecontact with the Headmaster, however, there was a certain kindness. He didn't look scary, rather abit strange and odd... But what wasn't at this school? Hopefully Lear was doing okey. He hasn't shown in what seemed forever.

Nico agreed with everything they said. And some parts did make her blush in shame with a slight jab in the stomach. Truth be told, even she hadn't made the best decisions. And most of them she regretted deeply. She could do better and she knew that. But this was just... so hard to do. Her tiny hands held onto the edge of her skirt gently, trying to deflate her fearful nerves. What pulled her out of that selfdoubt, was the velvet voice of the adult Dhampir, Alaric. He mentioned that they'd now offer blood on set times of the day, every day, from that day on. That was new. The ones who knew she was a dhampir probably threw her a few glances, in which Nico answered by ignoring them. Finally, they had a system that assured her that she wouldn't have urges to attack students unwillingly. A few red tears welled up in her eyes, happy that finally, they wouldn't be able to feel threathened by her. From now on, she'd be freed from that fear.

Nico felt more secure. That there were people she could turn to. Of course, that had always been the case, but this confirmation was what she needed to actually get into action. There wasn't much she knew. Only that her peers doubted her. If that was a racial thing, she wasn't sure. That would no longer be an issue... So she hoped.

Her hands carefully held onto each other as their speech continued. They were worried. Sincerely. Prefects had to do patrols with atleast one other person now. That too made her rather happy. A flashback to being hugged from behind by some Hufflepuff who became a Prefect even, was now a thing of the past. Or... again, so she hoped.

There was alot that needed to be changed and she couldn't agree more. The sadness in Caradocs voice was the kind of a father. Hags. He had survived hags. Nico couldn't even start to imagine what that experience must've been like.

With a soft sigh, the prefect rubbed her elbow, looking at the floor beside her. Now more than ever, she felt out of place at her table. At first she felt determined to set an example, which she would keep on attempting to be... But there was an uneasiness that clinged onto her. Maybe because she felt left out. That her peers only saw her as a bossy, annoying child. A deep sensation started to fill her. A dark one. It wanted to make her throw up, but it was just about bearable... Physically, she was sitting in a herd of Slytherins and yet she felt like a serperate entity. Whatever...

When the food appeared infront of her, Nico only looked at it. There was plenty to choose from, but her once shimmering blue eyes, looked rather dull and empty. There was no spirit. Just a slow, draining feeling. Her adoration for food was nowhere to be seen.

Wish was in his usual state, he was reading a book as he walked. Glancing up occasionally to check he wasn’t going to bump into anything, or anyone. He saw many students he recognised in the hall, and tried to remember all their names. He had passed through the gateway into the great hall without even realising. He sat down with the other Hufflepuffs, and the minute he entered the great hall he knew something was off. The headmaster was, again, absent and the heads of houses were looking tense, Why has he been gone? Is he busy? Or maybe the rumours of him being missing are true! He thought to himself, No, that can’t be! A headmaster, which is a powerful wizard can’t just go missing!. He was talking with another Hufflepuff near him when, “Quiet Please”. Everyone quieted. "As some of you have already noticed, Headmaster Lear is currently not in attendance at the castle. He is temporarily unavailable due to pressing personal matters he has to take care of, but his absence has no negative effect on the quality of your education or the proceedings of your final exams. Come September, when you will be back at Hogwarts for your next term, we fully expect him to be with us again." This made many whispers arise. His thoughts raced He is missing!
“Oi, Wish”
“What?”,he turned there was another Hufflepuff whispering to him.
“Where do you reckon he is?”
“Who?”
“Professor Lear!
“Oh, uh... I dunno” Wish was too focused on the speech to pay any attention to their conversation.
After the heads of houses had finished announcing the change Wish was, scared to say the least. They’re tightening the security so much! He wondered what had happened to the headmaster Surely he isn’t dead? Why are they calling Dhampirs in particular? all these thoughts danced in his head as they said their final words.

Ana sat at down for dinner, her textbooks sitting in front of her as she downed her customary evening cup of coffee. Exams were bearing down and she had managed to keep all O's despite her missing most of the year. She was not about to lose that because she didn't study enough. Anyway, it was a decent distraction from thinking about the trainwreck that had been the student run Blossom Ball. She had been ditched by her date (well, she had kind of ditched him as well, but that was a entirely other problem), punched someone in the face, been set on fire, and then knocked out by some upperclassman. While she was fully healed physically, she was a mess emotionally. Since that night, she had kept herself busy in every way she could think of - studying, reading, joining clubs... She was more exhausted than ever, since every single time she tried to sleep, she was back at that cursed night. Not to mention that the face of the boy, Victor, seemed to be watching her at all times. It was as though his stupid face was seared on her inner eyelids.

Shaking her head slightly, she began to focus back on her studying when her head of house asked the students to quiet down. Ana sighed, closed her book, and rested her chin on her fist as she listened intently to hear what the witch would say.

Furrowing her brow as the woman spoke, she scanned the other professors and noticed a strange man. She had seen him around she supposed, but she had assumed that he was a new professor that she didn't know, which was entirely plausible given the remarkably high turn over rate the school had. Apparently, he was the headmaster of that stupid American wizarding school. Well, that was spectacularly shady.

As her head of house spoke, she noted that the Headmaster was apparently just gone. It made sense, since she had been trying to hunt him down to talk about her classwork for months. She had just assumed he was busy doing whatever it was headmasters did. She made a mental note to stop assuming things, since at least two of her assumptions were so wildly wrong.

Her mind drifted as the Ravenclaw head of house began chattering about Dhampirs. Honestly, she didn't much care. She had so many other problems. However, her focus snapped back to the front when she heard Professor Browne talk about hags. That might be fun. She had heard rumors, but if there was actually a coven of them, that might be something interesting to look in to. One would think that the ball would have made the former prefect more cautious, but it had had the exact opposite affect. Having come that close to dying and having lived had convinced the girl she was nearly invulnerable. Hunting hags would be a decent distraction. She would have to see if Rafa wanted to help.

Her focus drifted again when Professor Jensen was talking about the summer boarding school being cancelled. Ana didn't much care about that and she quietly sipped her coffee. However, upon the Slytherin professor's next word, she choked and her face turned bright red. To be fair, Ana's near death wasn't completely her fault. It was also Rafa's and Victor's faults. Also possibly Scott and Chad's if Ana was in a blaming mood.

She zoned out again, since she wasn't planning on going to the international Quidditch tournament, due to the fact she was expected to summer with her parents at their chateau in Provence. Pity, Ana so loved Quidditch.

Ana's focus again snapped back to the front of the Great Hall when the Ravenclaw Professor announced curfew changes. Her jaw dropped in indignation before she pressed her lips together and scowled. She had an invisibility cloak that she had recently obtained that she was dying to try out. Bloody hell, travel in groups? How was that going to help? If someone wanted to attack some stupid school child that didn't know much magic, she failed to see how another school child who also knew little magic would help. Honestly, if she was a killer, she would prefer groups. More people to kill. If she was a killer. Not that she was.

She bit back a snarky retort along the lines of 'What if I'm just endangering myself by ignoring the rules?' in response to his statement about expulsion and the like. She doubted that would be something that the professors would appreciate at this moment in time. Still,it was a valid question. It was her right to endanger herself if she damn well pleased, and she didn't like the professors pretending they were trying to protect them. If they actually cared, they would have made these changes right after the ball, not waited over a month and then announced them with two weeks left in the school year.

Most of the rest was various nonsense about what would happen if they broke curfew. Ana didn't much care seeing as she didn't plan on being caught. As they finished, she rolled her large expressive eyes and crossed her arms. Once the food appeared, she huffed and glanced at Ivy, who had just sat beside her. "What a lot of posturing and nonsense," she sighed, beginning to serve herself and finishing her cup of coffee.

Alina had gotten to The Great Hall late that evening and heard the professors talking about...well, several rather important issues and events that occurred that school year so instead of interrupting and making her way to the table, she waited near the entrance to the room and listened. Many students, those older that remembered the year prior, were disappointed that there wasn't going to be a Summer Camp that year but it didn't matter to Alina herself. She knew her father expected herself and Bella home for the Summer. That meant no quidditch games for them either, even if Hufflepuff was participating.

Now that the professors had stopped talking and the eating had begun, she made he way passed some of the other house tables and to the Hufflepuff table where she saw her friend and roommate. "Em! Hi! Mind if I sit?" and knowing her friend's answer she went ahead and found herself a spot right next to her, placing her bag down on the other side. "Heard them talking some about the big quidditch match. Are you excited?" She knew her friend had worked her way up the Hufflepuff Team and was second in line, quite a feat for a first year! She was excited for her and for her house team, even if she couldn't be there to support them.

She gathered up some of the food before her onto her plate although it wasn't much. With each day that brought them closer to summer, her appetite seemed to be diminishing. It was probably the nerves from going back home. She glanced around the table to look for some of her other Hufflepuff friends, including @Clifton Troublefield .

Let your confidence shine, pretty girl. <3

How many times would Mars have that aching feeling like they'd missed something big? Like they were forgetting something, weren't observant enough, had holes and gap in their brain void of necessary information. It was getting tiring.

With a slight uneasiness, they set their fork down, tipping back on the bench they were perched on to look up at the four Heads of Houses. Their eyes drifted to the dhampir professor, their own house head. Alaric looked as made up as ever but there was something in his expression. Mars shivered slightly. They'd come to rely on his kind strength. If he was worried, the whole school was probably f***ed.

The golden plates remained empty as the professor spoke of hags and race-baiting and the disaster of the Secret Blossom Ball. Hags? Okay, they'd definitely missed something there. Race-baiting? They hadn't been to the masquerade, not really one for parties, so that was foreign to them as well. And the Blossom Ball, well, they knew about that. They'd had enough common sense to stay out of it all. With a furrowed brow, Mars caught the headmaster's name. Lear? He was missing? So, the rumors had been true.

Crossing an ankle up to their right thigh, Mars set their elbows into the meat of their thigh, propping their chin into intertwined fingers. At the Hufflepuff end of the professors' table, they caught sight of a man. Squinting, they finally got a good look at him. They'd always assumed he was Lear, not giving it much of a second thought, but looking at him it was clear than he was not the same man who had stood in the place of the four professors during Mars' first day at Hogwarts. Rising dread, bitter and vile, made their stomach clench. Something in the air turned sweet, then sour, then sweet again, building until it was suffocating. A saccharine feeling, sickly sweet, sticky and dripping. And again, that pang in their head, like they were missing something. Well, obviously they were missing something. They didn't know who that man was. They always assumed—

Mars gritted their teeth. Sometimes curiosity killed the cat and sometimes waiting around starved it to death. Shaking it away, they listened on, tearing their eyes away from the man to stare at the wooden surface of the table. Their eyes hooded slowly as they listened to the new rules.

They weren't a dhampir, so that was fine. Never liked the secret events much and though the pull of the Forbidden Forest was great, they weren't an idiot. Summer camp was never an option in their head in the first place. Reporting, sure, that made enough sense. They trusted a fair amount of the professors in this school enough to feel comfortable with that. It was the mention of the curfew that had their head snapping up.

What. Mars scowled. Curfew at eight till seven, stricter patrols, new staff members, and harder punishments? They were kidding, right? The rational side of their brain knew why. The rational side of their brain always knew why. It was just a matter of listening to it. Mars knew they should—it wasn't as if they were a try-hard rule-breaker—but then, sitting sleepless in the stifling heat of the Ravenclaw dorms, sweating and feeling like the curtains were squeezing their ribcage into fractured shards... even the idea was enough to make them gag. But explosion. Well—no, what about that man? They couldn't risk that.

Mars sighed. There was nothing to do but sit and accept. The food sparked into life but Mars didn't have much of an appetite. They stared at the golden plate, then looked around. Maybe they could find someone to answer the questions they had. Maybe they could find someone to fix the holes in their brain, the ones they felt growing every time, burning like old film rolls caught on fire.

[ Home, they said. I should like to go home. ]

[quote] May's first summer was ruined to pieces. Yes, they were going to have 20 days of London vacation, but nothing else. What was that for a summer! May played absent mentally with her food, when she saw her roommate Alina Rosier, earring as thought nothing had happened. May was quite mad with her. What was that look of nothing has happened? May looked at her as thought she was a worm beside her.

"Well, of course I'm exited! But I feel like I'm going to fall....if Serena fails, I have to enter the pitch. And....I'm going to play against a second year, Drumstrang!" May said, her face obviously showing that she was scared to death. "Why aren't you...sad that there isn't summer camp?" May finally asked her friend, not daring touch her food. To May, it seemed disgusting. She didn't want to eat. It seemed like the world had turned upside down. Like somebody had punched her in the face. "Do you want to come and visit me at Sussex? M-my father won't mind." May asked her roommate. She would miss seeing her every day at the dormitories. "I'm going to be pretty bored all alone, at home, with my dad. After all....Muggle kids aren't that fun."
