Call for Volunteers: BBCode

In short:

I am looking for people who are knowledgeable about HTML and CSS, responsive layouts, and who enjoy experimenting with BBCode to create beautiful presentations...

... to take part in a working and testing group focused on the future of BBCode on the website.

Over the coming weeks, I will be working on improving the BBCode tools available on the website. This is something I would like to explore closely with you, as I know it is a creative tool that many of you care deeply about.

I have several concerns in mind:

• Accessibility, which means ensuring that the website’s content is accessible to all users, including people with disabilities. This involves allowing everyone to have readable text and therefore to change the font, font size, line spacing, and to benefit from sufficient contrast. Your creations need to remain attractive in every situation.
• Display on mobile phones, which account for more than half of the website’s traffic: you need to be able to create layouts that adapt to different screen widths.
• The long-term durability of content. The further tools are pushed beyond their normal intended use (tables, tables inside tables, invisible images, and so on) the more likely it is that a future website update will eventually break your formatting. We saw an example of this at the beginning of the month, when a simple change to the image display code made it impossible for me to display images inside tables as I had before.
• Creativity, meaning that, within the two constraints outlined above, you should still be able to create content that is imaginative, original, attractive, and allows you to express yourselves through more than simple paragraphs.

The goal is therefore to provide simpler and more suitable BBCode tools, giving you everything you need to create beautiful layouts, while also considering how to limit misuse or unintended uses of those tools. This is not something I can do alone, and I will need your creativity and inventiveness.

I need people with genuine knowledge of web languages and web design.

Profiles wanted:

• Has already used BBCode to create complex layouts;
• Has a good knowledge of HTML, including web semantics, and CSS;
• Understands what a responsive layout is;
• Has heard of divs and flexbox, and knows that tables should not be used to create page layouts.
