Into the Deep

The shore of the lake quickly became one of Layal's favorite spots in Hogwarts. The rhythmic splashing of waves proved to be a welcome relief from the constant hustle and bustle of the castle.
Wrapped in her oversized sweater, she pulled her knees closer to her chest and got lost in her book. She had been trying to step out of her comfort zone recently, so in the interest of trying new genres, she was reading a contemporary book. It was about this old man who -

" Wait- NO! "

Before she could react, sudden gust of wind carried her cap up and away.

Scrambling to her feet, the book fell to the damp grass, she tried capturing it, but it was already too late. The wind, seeming to have done what it came to do, carelessly abandoned the young Slytherin's cap on top of the rolling waves.

Panic like she had never felt set in. It wasn't just a cap. That piece of tattered fabric was the only thing she had left from her brother. The only physical link she had to her family, and it was slowly drifting further...and further away.

Layal didn't stop to think. She didn't calculate the risk, and she certainly didn't stop to remember that she was an absolutely garbage swimmer.

She plunged straight into the freezing Autumn water.

The cold hit her instantly, stealing the breath away from her lungs. The sweater got soaked within seconds, turning to rocks, incessantly pulling her down into the deep.

She instinctively thrashed, trying to reach the surface. With her fingertips, she touched the rim of the cap once - just once - before it slipped beneath the surface again.

Water flooded her senses. She struggled to get to the surface, choking on the lake water. She felt the pressure of too little air building in her chest.
Up, inhale a tiny bit of air and a whole lot of water, down.

Rinse and repeat.

The frequency however, was getting lower and lower. Her limbs were getting weaker and weaker. Her clothes were getting heavier and heavier.

With a last desperate gasp, she allowed her body to relax. And down she went.
"Me and you?
We're like the thirty first of December and the first of January, so close yet a year apart."
