Evgenia had finally, finally gotten the hang of some of her classes, and she was flying high on the knowledge of her grades and overall understanding slowly improving. Some of the classes were still frustratingly hard, of course, but challenge is how brains grow. To celebrate, Zhenya was relaxing in the library and set on only doing a minimal amount of studying tonight. She figured she could go to sleep early tonight, for once, and she didn't even have that much homework to do currently anyway. It was a welcome change from the weeks of borderline overload ever since school had started, and the Hufflepuff was quite enjoying not needing to worry about getting six or more pages of homework done in one night.
Right now, she was slumped down in her seat, idly mentally choreographing a short program. She didn't have an idea of a good song to set it to yet, but it was filled with triple jumps and layback spins and complex footwork. She'd have to tweak it if she ever wanted to make it a competition program, since there weren't that many jumps allowed in a short program - or she could just make it a free skate. Who knew? At this rate, she wasn't going to get to compete for a long time, and that irked Zhenya to no end any time she thought about it (which was quite a lot).
There was still the issue of finding a place to skate here. It was quite the persistent and annoying dilemma, and one that Zhenya wasn't entirely sure there was a good answer to. Why does this school not have an ice rink?! Surely there were other wizards who liked to skate? Evgenia had met Guinevere, but she was one person in a school of hundreds. Maybe Zhenya would have to to the work of introducing skating to Hogwarts. Hmm.
She stood up and moved to the side of the room, beginning to stretch almost on impulse. One leg rose behind her, and she reached with both hands behind her head to grab it, her body bending into a stationary Biellmann spin position. Zhenya held that for a few seconds, then stretched her arms out wide as her leg dropped back to the floor. She hadn't realized how much her muscles needed to stretch. I was sitting too long. She glanced back at her unmarked herbology homework open on the table, her capped pen lying across it ready for use. I suppose I had better stretch in between homework. She'd chosen to just do astronomy and herbology tonight, saving the rest for tomorrow. Zhenya began to pull her arm across her chest to stretch it and her shoulder, paying no attention to anyone else in the library who might be noticing.

I quietly walked into the library with my books against my chest. The room was peaceful and filed with the soft sounds of turning pages and writing with quils on parchment.

The sunlight which came through the windows made the wooden tables glow with warm light.

I stood still for a minute looking around for a place to sit. The library was busy with students.

As I scaned the room I saw a small blonde girl standing beside one of the tables. She was stretching in a way I never saw before. She was lifting one leg high behind her head before lowering it again with perfect balance. She looked very focused as if she had practiced those movements many times.

I wondered what sport she played but I quickly looked away. I did not want to disturb her while she was enjoying her quiet time.

There was an empty chair opposite to her so I walked over as quiet as I could and sat down. I carefully kept my books on the table before taking out my parchment, quill and bottle of ink.

Being a first year student at Hogwarts was exciting but merlin it is also very exhausting. Every lesson taught something completely new. There were spells to remember, strange potion ingredients and many more.

It felt like my mind would burst with all new information. But I still want to do my best at studies and make my parents proud.

I love learning magic. Even when the lessons are difficult I want to understand them well and improve myself little by little. I knew that if I kept working hard everything would become easy with time.

I let out a quiet sigh and opened my History of Magic homework. After reading the questions carefully I dipped my quill into the ink and began writing. Soon I was completely focused on my work with the silence of the library help me concentrate.

After her stretches it was time to get back to work. Evgenia resecured her high ponytail, which had come a little bit loose during her time sitting in the library, then she slid back into her seat. On to the tough stuff.
She worked on her herbology until she was finished, pen spilling ink onto her pages with each motion. Evgenia wasn't the best when it came to wizarding herbology, but she was managing to keep her grades in the class decent, so she was happy with it. And some of the plants they worked with sometimes were at least semi-familiar to her, or something like a normal 'Muggle' plant.
But when Evgenia finished herbology and switched to astronomy, she was quickly reminded that she was not a stellar (pun intended) student in that class. She hopped up to stretch again, taking a quick moment to mentally grumble about the astronomy homework - and, honestly, the class itself - to herself. Why was astronomy even required, anyway? This wasn't an astronaut school. Wizards didn't fly up to the moon. But she sat through the ridiculously boring classes - her weaker points within the curriculum - and she did all the disgustingly borderline-incomprehensible assignments, and as a result her grades in the class stayed juuuust afloat enough to keep her within the O average.
She was thoroughly annoyed within five minutes of sitting down to pore over the homework. "Это невыносимо," "It's unbearable," Evgenia scowled beneath her breath. "How does anyone do this?" With a lot of grit and a lot of luck, she thought then, flipping the page over and then promptly glaring in fury at the multiple questions printed onto the back. On an impulse, she stood with the assignment and marched over to another Hufflepuff girl, the closest person nearby. "Excuse me, are you good in astronomy?"

I had been so focused on my homework that I did not even notice how much time had passed. Sometimes I looked up from my parchment and saw the blonde Huflepuff girl in front of me.

She had finished one assignment and started another but it did not seem to be going well. She stood up again to stretch and then she rolled her shoulders before sitting back down.

A few minutes later she sighed, flipped her parchment and frowed at the questions on the other side. From the look on her face I could tell she was getting frustrated.

I smiled a little as I understood that feeling. First year has been full of subjects that made my head spin and everyone have one class they were not good with.

Then she suddenly stood up holding her assignment in one hand, and walked over to my side of the table. I looked up from my parchment as she stopped beside me.

"Excuse me, are you good in astronomy?"

I blinked before giving her a small friendly smile.

"I am not exactly amazing at it," I said with a quiet laugh.

"But I manage well enough somehow ending up with an Outstanding."

I looked at the parchment she was holding before looking back at her.

"Astronomy can be confusing sometimes I have to read the questions more than once before they start making sense."

I closed my own homewrk and rested my quill beside it.

"If you like I can try to help. We can figure it out together. Two people doing it together wll be better than a single person."

Evgenia pursed her lips, then the girl began to offer her help. That was exactly what Evgenia wanted, and she found herself agreeing with the statement about two people. "Yes, two people have more ideas together than one person has alone. I end up with good grades, too, but only after hours of putting entirely too much effort into one piece of paper." That, to Evgenia was one of the most annoying things about this school. Sure, schoolwork should be challenging, but not so incomprehensibly so that she had to spend four hours on one page of homework. "So I don't think my good grade will last unless I figure out something else." She studied the girl in front of her, who had long dark hair and expressive dark eyes, something in her face giving off an impression of an innate sweetness and gentleness. Evgenia didn't know what exactly it was that made that so, but she supposed it didn't really matter right now. "I don't suppose we even need astronomy as first-years anyway. It seems like a rather pointless thing for us to learn about," she grumbled, sliding into a seat near the girl. It wasn't like they needed to know about the solar system for anything else in this class.

I smiled as she puled out the chair and sat beside me keeping her astronomy homework on the table with a sigh. I could tell she was frustrated.

"I know what you mean," I said with a small smile "Sometimes I spend so much time on one assignment that I wonder if I am even doing anythingat all."

I kept my quill beside my parchment and turned to face her.

"And astronomy is not my favourite subject either. I don't think I will choose to study the stars for hours if it was not part of our timetable."

When she mentioned that astronomy seemed pointless for first years I thought about it for a moment.

"I thought the same thing a few times," I said "Maybe the profesors know it will be useful later even though we don't know for what yet. Right now it feels like one of those subjects that need us to be very patient."

I gave her another friendly smile.

"By the way I'm Penelope, Penelope Kneen."

It was somehow comforting about talking to another Hufflepuff who was willing to admit that not every class was easy.

I genly turned her homework so we could both read it more easily.I offered her a warm smile before pointing at one of the questions.

"This one is not as bad as it looks shall we try doig it first?"

Evgenia kept a straight face (or at least tried to - she wasn't exactly sure whether she was succeeding) as the other Hufflepuff girl spoke, seemingly a first year student as well. Well, aren't I lucky. She was glad it was a first year she had come up to and not an older student, though chances were an older student could have helped her out too. "Right? I do not see why I need astronomy to graduate a school. I suppose I do not mind having to take it, except for when I spend more time than seems reasonable on it." Moments later the girl introduced herself as Penelope Kneen, but Evgenia hadn't missed what she'd said about patience and the amount of time she sometimes spent on astronomy homework. Is this what that hat meant about Hufflepuffs being hardworking? Of course, other students would be putting plenty of their effort into their assignments, but now Evgenia idly wondered if the Hufflepuffs tended to spend more time on it than the other houses. "I am Evgenia." If she knew Penelope's name now, Penelope should know hers in turn. "That sounds okay. I can remember the names of planets and all that, as it was sometimes gone over in my school back home. That part's easy. I just usually have a harder time with the more abstract things and writing the long passages," she explained to her new study partner of sorts. "I'm not interested by it, and it bores me."
