Dear Serena,

I had such a wonderful time getting to know you this year and I thought I would just write this letter to check in and see how you're doing! It's crazy to think that you live in London and I live there too (well now I only live there when I'm living with my father), but we never ran into each other. It is a big city, though, and I mainly kept to my little section of it. I hope you got home safely from camp!

I know we talked about this a little bit over the summer but I really did enjoy my first year at Hogwarts! It was so exciting to learn about the wizarding world and everything in it. It's almost funny...at the beginning of the year I kept wishing I was a Pureblood, like you, or even a Halfblood because I felt so behind most of my peers who had some knowledge of the wizarding world while I was just thrown into things without any prior knowledge. My great grandparents on my father's side had magic but I didn't really know what that meant until I came here. But now at the end of the year, I feel like I'm almost glad that I'm not a Pureblood. For one thing, it seems like you, and all of the other Pureblood families, have so much pressure riding on you guys like you have to be the best student to make your families proud. And also I feel like being able to see magic and experience the magic of this community for the first time while also attending Hogwarts for the first time just makes the experience that much more magical, if that makes any sense. What do you think? After all, you're on the other side of things, being Pureblood and knowing about the wizarding world.

I've only just arrived back home and I already miss everyone and Hogwarts. It's crazy...I do feel a little badly about it, since I have been gone for almost the entire year and my family hasn't seen me, but at the same time all I want to do is get back to Hogwarts! Anyway, I've rambled on enough about myself! How are you? What are you up to now that you're home? Are your parents excited to have you back? Do you have any siblings that are excited to see you? I have a sister, Katerina (we call her Kat). We were kind of in an argument for the past year but I think we're making progress in sorting things out now that I'm home, so I suppose there are at least some upsides to being home. I'm so bored just being home all day without any of the excitement of Hogwarts! I hope you're doing well!

All the best,

Dear Amadea,

Thank you for your very thoughtful and sweet letter. Summer camp was pretty fun - which I am a little surprised by, admittedly. I had no idea you also lived in London though, perhaps our parents will let us meet up sometime. My mother does say I'm too young to go out alone, though, so I guess I am limited to wherever my brother will let me tag along.

I don't really pay attention to the whole blood status thing. I am aware that my family would be disappointed in me saying such things but, I honestly could not care less. Being a pureblood is no better than anyone else, in my opinion. It's nice that I grew up with magic all around me and never really had to worry about not fitting into Hogwarts, I guess. But I think my friends - like you, Reid, Rosie and everyone else who isn't a pureblood - also did really well and fit in so easily. Most of us, even purebloods, did not really come into Hogwarts knowing how to do magic. We just knew that it existed. I could not cast any better than anyone else. I don't think anyone's blood makes them any less than anyone else.

It does sound quite wonderful experiencing both Hogwarts and magic together for the first time. I can't really imagine being new to both of them. Hogwarts was quite an experience for me as it was! There were definitely some bad moments though and I think if I had known how to be better at magic from an earlier age then maybe I would have done better against those dangers. But it is what it is. Being made Prefect at the start of the journey was very unexpected. I can't remember if I told you but Professor Lear also wrote to me a few weeks ago, just because summer camp finished with a Head Girl badge in it!

It doesn't feel real! I'm pretty surprised. My parents are very pleased though. They did want me to be Slytherin Prefect so they've been kind of unhappy about the fact that I got Hufflepuff but, I think Head Girl is making them happy. I have an older brother - Arjan. We sort of get along, I guess. Not really well but it's ok. I'm pretty sure my mother is happier to see him than me, since he's home from school now too. But me and my dad hang out. Dad even said he would take me to a Quidditch game soon, if there is one over the summer, which I think would be really cool. Do you have any plans for the summer? Or even for next year? We're going to be second years!!

Lots of love,

Dear Serena,

Meeting up would be a lot of fun! I would love to explore the city with you. My parents are less strict about letting me go out; they really don't care where I go as long as I tell them where I'm going first. So if your brother ever goes somewhere and he'll let you go as well, just send an owl and we can meet up!

I think not paying attention to blood status is a good thing, no matter what your parents say. We aren't living in the 20th century anymore and times have changed. From what I can tell there's a significantly smaller amount of Pureblood families nowadays and it has clearly been shown that any Muggle born witch or wizard can perform just as well as a Pureblood. If I'm being honest, I don't even completely understand the prejudice against Muggle borns, but maybe it's just because I am one.

Yeah, first year was definitely something I would have never been able to predict. So many crazy things happened and I know you had your fair share of trauma...I'm just glad we all made it through alive. Congratulations on your Head Girl promotion! That's so exciting! I'm not sure if you would know this since you're Head Girl now, but I also got a letter in the mail with a Prefect badge in it! I guess I'm taking your old position now haha. It'll be exciting to work together next year!

Is your family mainly a Slytherin family? If I'm being honest I really don't completely understand the whole House thing and why Pureblood families think it's so important for their kids to be in a certain house. Again, this is probably just because I'm Muggle born but all of the Houses seem like they are equally great to me. Is your brother at Hogwarts as well? I don't think I've ever seen him, though I don't really interact with anyone that's not in our year. Going to a Quidditch game sounds like a lot of fun! As for my summer plans, most of them were uprooted when I got home and found out my parents had filed for a divorce...now my mum lives in Camberley and I'm spending half the month with her and half the month with my father in London. It was all such a shock and I'm still trying to process it, I guess. I mean it explains why I received virtually nothing from them during the school year but I was kind of blindsided when I came home and everything was so different. On the bright side, I think Cecily Quinn is going to come visit me in London for a few days, which will be a nice distraction from everything. And gosh, plans for next year? I don't know if I can even think that far ahead. How about you? I'm sure the Head Girl is already planning for next year. I can't believe we're going to be second years. Oh how the time flies!

All the best,

Dear Amadea,

That sounds fantastic. If my brother lets me tag along sometime, I will write to you and let you know for definite. It would be great to see more of London with a friend, rather than just with my family all the time. I wish my parents were not as strict as they are but I guess it's for safety and stuff. Just really annoying.

I really don't understand the prejudice either, to be honest. My family will go on a massive speech if I ask so, it's probably better to just not ask. At least, less annoying. But it's not just muggleborns. They apply the same to others too, like our house elf. My brother is always being mean to him, which I think is very dumb because he's adorable and I consider him a friend. He helps me out a lot. Of course, he is paid to work here so I guess he is only doing it because it's his job but I think we get along really well.

I was wondering who was going to be Hufflepuff prefect if I became Head Girl! I'm so glad to hear it's you! Congratulations! That will make the patrols much more fun, I imagine. It's pretty boring when you're doing them alone or with someone you don't know as well. I usually end up just rambling on and the other person stands there, quietly listening to me. Ha!

Most of my family didn't actually attend Hogwarts. The majority of my relatives live in different countries. Like I think a lot of them are in India. So I don't know what house they would have been, in reality. But based on the research that my mother did before I attended Hogwarts, she found out that each of the houses had specific traits to them. She mentioned that a lot of her friends and their children were Slytherins, so it was deemed that that would be the most appropriate house for me. My father did think Ravenclaw was quite nice too, mostly because he enjoys the idea of me being smart. But I guess Hufflepuff isn't really either. So yeah. If anything, it's probably the least favourite of the lot of them, at least by their eyes.

My brother goes to Durmstrang, actually. He started a year before I did as they start at ten, apparently, so I guess he's a year above me now. So you wouldn't have known who he was anyway.

I am sorry to hear about your parents though. That sounds rough. Are you alright? I guess that's probably a bit of a silly question, I'm sorry. I hope it gets better soon though. Good to hear that you have a friend visiting though. I don't think I've met Cecily before but that sounds fun. I am still working on the plan for second year right now so I guess that I may have something by the time you reply! Hopefully!

Lots of love,
